Just wanted to see if anyone else has been experiencing the same thing. I haven't experienced any lag with this phone whatsoever except for the stock messaging app.
1) Sometimes when I open the messaging app, the preview of a text messaging thread may be from many hours ago and then "refresh" itself to the most recent text. Essentially when I open the app, the preview shows a much older text message and then after a couple seconds will show the most recent one.
2) Sometimes when I push send on a message, it will take a second before the text is actually sent so if I continue to text, it will add on to the previous message until sent.
The only way I've found to correct this is to switch to the "SMS/MMS" tab, which seems to correct the lag, but of course any time you push the back button out of the app, it goes back to the deault "all messages" tab when opening. I also tried holding down the tab titles and it brings you to a screen which it almost looks like HTC was going to give the option to remove other tabs but the boxes cannot be unchecked.
Anyone else running into these issues? Find a solution?
Yeah ive noticed the same weirdly enough I don't feel lag when using sliding messaging app or textra

I don't recall having any of those issues but for me what happens is when I open the message app, in the list of people I've been texting, it shows their phone number for a second, and then it switches to their name. And it only happens once in a while. Like right now, it's not happening. Weird

Same here. Kind of annoying, but I had so many problems with go sms and hand cent on my rezound not sending group messages correctly. I'm scared to change and lose a working "group messaging app".

I have these two issues.
This stock HTC Messages app automatically closes when you back out of sending a reply message, so it doesn't refresh the preview list like previous HTC phones on a reply. On the same token, it appears that it completely quits the Messages app, requiring you to load the names from the Contacts app when you open the Messages app without replying to a message. If you press Home rather than Back, when you open the Messages app again, it loads the messaging screen with the contact you most recently messaged, the person to whom you just replied. If you open the app and send a message, then press Back, it loads the list again, and everything is all good. It's all very odd.
Well glad to see I'm not the only one. I had tried Handcent, Chomp, etc with nothing but lag and other issues. Thanks to the response from NSRpxndxhou, I tried Textra and actually really like it. Best replacement text app I've tried.
I like how HTC's stock messaging app looks, but it ended up simply being too slow. I switched to Textra, enabled the dark theme and never looked back. Silky smooth performance, even with giant threads.
I am in the middle of an email conversation with the guys at Textra. I love the app. But my group messages are not working correctly. Those guys are great. Within one day I got an email with an update to try.... make that two updates. Just got another one while typing this.

Textra does seem nice, but there are a couple things I would miss from the stock messaging app. I like the ability to search ALL your text messages to find a specific text. I also prefer to have the time stamp on each and every text like the stock application does. I also don't like how it shows the contacts phone number below their name.
I would likely use this as a stock replacement if they were able to integrate all those features.

You may want to consider going into messaging->settings->general and adding a text limit (default at 200). When you do this you will notice your messaging to be a bit more zippy. This is because its not trying to open all of your old previous messages (which can be in the thousands).

I had a Messaging app issue when I had too many messages, which was fixed by deleting them, but that whole "reloading" issue seems to be separate.
Even with a few messages, it tends to reload upon reopening the Messaging app. Really weird why it does it...

Had this issue as well, found out that if you go to the stock messaging app settings > MMS > then connection settings, this gives you the APN. Copy that URL and paste it in the Textra MMS settings. Mines worked flawlessly ever since. Not experiencing any lag like the stock messaging app, and have noticed no difference in features.

I use the Handcent SMS app for my IM's on CM6. I find that it seems to have a "buffer" of messages that it has available - I am constantly losing older SMS messages. It seems to be around the 200 message mark (give or take) that old texts start going away. I've checked the messaging app that is included with CM6 and it doesn't show them either.
Is this a limitation of the messaging apps (both of them,) Android, or CM6? Anyone else seeing this behavior?
I'm on CM6 also, using handcent exclusively. I've never seen this issue. I know that in the actual thread will only keep a certain amount of messages 'live', but you just need to hit the 'load earlier messages' button.

Yeah, I know about the "load earlier" but it's not loading all of the messages either - just a handful that aren't already shown on the screen.
Go into the stock messaging app... Menu>>>Settings
See if the "Delete old messages" box is checked. If it is, that could explain it.

That was EXACTLY it! 200 was the limit, and it was holding a few MMS in there too. Got it unchecked now so I won't lose any more messages and can keep a better count on how many I'm making. Thank you so much - this is why I love this forum!
Glad I could help.

Hi all,
Does anyone else have issues with the messaging app slowing to a crawl after a while? For me, after using it for a while it really begins to become slow to respond to things like the back button, opening a thread, etc.
Thanks,

Try setting it to delete messages after a certain number, typically around 200 or so.

My suggestion is to use another messaging app...I personally prefer chompSMS but theres also others with way more features and options than the stock messaging app and I never have freezing problems or anything like it..

It is already set to do that but I think that because I did a restore from a previous phone there are a lot more messages than the set limit. I never had problems with my other phone though with that many messages. Think I'll try using another messaging app as the other reply suggests and see how that goes.
When installing another sms app, would it be starting new or does it integrate with the existing messages on the phone and bring those threads over to the new app.
Thanks,
Ho'okani
The SMS is a globally accessible database. So any app can access it. Just make sure you turn off notifications for the builtin sms app.

Thanks guys. I'm going to give Handcent a try and see how that goes. Anyone know if you make Handcent your default messaging app, does that make it so messages no longer get added to the stock app's database? I ask that because I also use SMS Backup and Restore to backup my text messages.
Thanks,
Ho'okani
I switched to CM11 nightlies when it came out for galaxy nexus. Been having all kinds of issues with texting. First i tried hangouts and i couldnt get lightflow to work with it so i could get repeat notifications and stuff like that. Gave up on hangouts and switched to the normal messaging app. Probably should add that my voicemail and text messages are going through google voice account but i have google voice setup on phone only to sync the voicemails and let normal messaging app to deal with sms/mms. anyway, since switching to the normal messaging app i have been getting text messages multiple times. just had a few texts i originally received about 5 hours ago come through again in a quick burst right after i got a new message from somebody else. i have played with lots of the settings but nothing seems to fix this. the other day i got repeat messages come through the second time at about 3am which was annoying as hell. thinking about it some more it also did it once or twice when i was using hangouts. please help!?!?
i just looked online at my google voice account and im not getting them twice on there so its something on the phone doing it. going to uninstall lightflow and see if its causing the problem.
It could be a problem with CM11. I remember having the issue on CMetal when the message would come in twice using the stock messaging app. It was later fixed by the developer. So maybe its an issue Cyanogenmod has to fix. As far as Lightflow working with Hangouts. It works fine for me. You need to make sure you turn off the notification in the Hangouts app so you dont get the sound/vibrate twice.

thanks. so far so good with lightflow uninstalled- no double messages yet and have received some texts in last hour or so and none ofthem have repeated. problem with lightflow and hangouts i was having wasnt double notifications, it was i got only the default hangouts notification and nothing that was set in lightflow. ill keep playing with it i guess and keep updating CM and try again in a few days or week to see if it works better.
mind sharing your settings you had for lightflow- what settings for lightflow app and then what notifications you were using (all hangouts messages, sms, mms, etc). there is so many to choose from for hangouts in lightflow i wasnt sure what correct ones to use was and all the combinations i tried didnt seem to work. thanks.

The only thing I touched in light flow was the "hangouts-all notification types". I didn't use the MMS and SMS ones.

thanks. reinstalled lightflow, reselected hangouts as default sms app, and just did what you said above and it seems to be working. Before i had messed with lightflow settings and clearly one of those options screwed things up. no double messages yet either- ill keep my fingers crossed that either reinstalling or the latest CM update fixed that. thanks for your help- appreciate it!
thought everything was working but still getting messages coming through a second time. seems to be only the messages that i dont actually go in the app and mark as read. im going to make sure i clear those and see if it helps for now.

Great, report back.
One suggestion though, instead of going through all these trial and error attempts, you could just get a logcat and get it to lightflow dev/CM11 maintainer (or nightly thread), surely they will be able to help more/pinpoint the culprit.

thanks for the suggestion. ill try and figure out how to do that and get it to them.
i have still been messing with it and have had no luck. it is so $%#&ed up i am annoyed beyond belief. just a few minutes ago- got a notification of a photo of my niece my brother texted to me. preview of photo was visible in notification but when i click on it, nothing, messages just disappears. Not to mention im not just getting double messages anymore, i get up to quadruple messages sometimes. ive been close to just throwing my phone against the wall when suddenly every message i received in the last day come through again, 4 times each, and phone is trying to notify for each message- feels like its going to vibrate itself to pieces and the beeping over beeping over beeping is just crazy.
Doesnt matter if i have hangouts or the stock messaging app as the default sms/mms app. doesnt seem to matter what settings i use in any of them, because ive tried just about every combination. i'm eligible for a phone upgrade at the end of this month so i just have to make the phone bearable until then. im going to try the logcat thing but after i send that ill just go back to stock to see if that helps cuz im going to go crazy(ier) having to deal with this anymore. Grrrr!
sorry to keep posting on here to complain but just to add to the mystery. brother resent the text that disappeared when i clicked on it a few minutes ago. new one opened fine and the one that disappeared earlier suddenly showed up also.
Generally very happy with new G3 (on Optus network in Australia), but two weird things driving me nuts.
1. With several apps open, hit the home button. All good, end up on home screen. Then hit the open apps button and it says 'No recent apps'. Repeat above steps and now it shows all those running apps and you have an enabled option to Clear All or can individually swipe them off.
Any one else seeing this. Never saw this with Nexus 5 I just lost and replaced with G3.
2. The keyboard entry on the Nexus 5 (if I recall correctly) worked pretty much the same for emails as it did for say SMS messages or Hangouts messages. i.e. if you had a bad typo you could position back into the word and all suggested corrections appeared to allow you to replace the typo. This is how SMS/Hangouts works but seems other text entry functions don't do this correction process the same way. Is it up to each app developer to control how this works or do they all use the common keyboard text entry 'widget' or control??
3. Hangouts. Seems that all of a sudden (probably an app update?) Hangouts (which I have selected as my default messaging app) tries to send a Hangouts message instead of a regular SMS. This is fine if the received has Hangouts activated on their device/account, but many of my contacts don't and I've suddenly realised they what I thought were SMS messages sent correctly have just gone into the ether. So step by step, if I go to Hangouts, search for a contact, select contact and start typing, I can see that it is telling me it's sending a Hangouts message, not an SMS. If instead I explicitly scroll in Hangouts through my contacts, and select one, it pops up their contact details and I get the option to select a message icon. When I now get back to start typing the message, it now shows the mobile number it will SMS (not Hangout message) to. This works fine, but is different behaviour to a week ago.
For all of the above, apologies if I simply don't understand the apps or OS fully yet. Learning ...
You can either clear all of swipe each to kill the app.
The stock keyboard sucks in my opinion. I use the Google keyboard without any issues.

Thanks - but my issues is that it says no active apps, and the Clear All button is greyed out. Repeat the process and now the apps which I know are open, are all there. The question is why first display of apps thinks there is nothing there.

Install a 3rd party keyboard, then set your new keyboard to be the default keyboard. Now restart your device and Disable the stock keyboard with something like titanium backup, reboot once more to be sure it is gone and notice how much smoother everything is... Most lag disappears... Just goes to show how crap the stock keyboard really is...

Have issues number 1 and 2 too.
I did give the stock keybord a try too, at the beginning i had good feedback.. But after a while it became laggy.
Hey guys, I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but I literally cannot find anything on this. I've been looking for a better texting app ever since I realized that my favorite SMS app Google Messenger horribly compresses all of my MMS files and there is no way of changing that. At first I though it was my phone (HTC M8) since before I did not have this issue, but I've upgraded it to the HTC 10 and it does the same thing. I've been using Chomp because its somewhat the best overall app I've found. I tried Textra, but every now and then it fails to send/receive messages for around 3 minutes, and when it finally does send my message, it'll just flood me with all the messages I should've been receiving during that time all at once. I tried Yaata as well but I was having issues with the group SMS feature on it. I recently found out that the Facebook Messenger app has re-integrated the SMS feature on it, but for some odd reason, I cannot get the setting to pop up on my phone. I'm fully updated, no root/exposed, I've tried reinstalling the FB Messenger app, I even installed the native Facebook app to see if it was that it needed to sync with my account or something, but nothing has worked. There is still no option for me to use Facebook Messenger as a default SMS app on the settings, or even send texts through. Has anyone ever encountered this issue?
First of all, who is your provider? I'm on AT&T, and their MMS size limit is 1MB. I was having the same issues with Textra and had to tweak a couple of the settings. I changed the size to 1MB and the other setting to 'System". Everything works great. You could always try going into the HTC Messages app and changing the MMS size, and then trying Google Messenger again? As for FB Messenger, this may be stupid, but is your phone number confirmed in the Settings page? I haven't tried that app yet for SMS.

Oops, could've sworn I mentioned T-Mobile somewhere, guess it slipped my mind. It's T-Mobile. I believe the stock HTC app actually sends MMS fine as well, just not on Google Messenger.
On the Textra issue, I used to think it was a regular SMS issue, but now that I think back, it might've been an MMS only issue since it happened to me on a group text. I can't really recall if it happened on regular one on one SMS.
And yeah, it's confirmed. I double checked on the settings and when I reinstalled it, it asked me to make sure it was correct. There's apparently (from some screenshots I've seen) a whole section on the tab all the way to the right on FB Messenger that just says SMS, but it's definitely not on my screen.

Try doing this.... Settings > Apps > Top Right Corner "Configure Apps" > Default Apps > Choose Messenger for Default Messenging. I didn't do it, but FB Messenger is listed under the choices. Maybe that will kick in the SMS Settings?
...it worked. I can't believe I forgot to check that. Thank you so much!
Hi I'm having the same problem, but "Messenger" isn't listed under the choices for Default messaging apps. Is there a way I can force it to be recognised as an SMS app?
EDIT: I figured it out - For some reason I never received the prompt to give Messenger SMS permissions. Once I went into Settings > Apps and enabled the permissions, everything was sorted!

This did it for me. I feel like this is an HTC 10 thing because on my Nexus 6P I was prompted with the permission request and SMS option right off the bat, whereas on the 10 I had to manually set it up.
