Hi all,
Having looked around I don't see anyone with the same issue as mine with regards to SMS.
I just got a new Nexus 2 days ago, and got the 4.0.4 update by doing the clear cache thing. All good.
I installed SMSBackup+ and started to restore all my text messages. Now I have about 21,000. Honestly I have no idea how I have that many, its possible some are dupes or something, I really don't know. But basically I left it to restore them overnight and woke up this morning with all my messages restored. Lovely.
But now, I tried to send a text to someone and it just froze. I quit to the home screen, went to go back to the message app but it just sits with a black screen doing nothing.
I presume its got something to do with it trying to load all the messages for the first time or something like that but I'm a bit gutted that it can't handle it. My old Galaxy S could handle them all with ease.
Is this a known issue on the GNex or am I asking too much with the volume of SMSs??
I'm a bit gutted if I've bought this brand new state of the art phone and it can't handle what my two year old SGS could!
It might have been the case that a couple of messages were corrupt. Try clearing the sms data and restoring again but only blocks at a time. If that doesn't work the messaging app might have an issue since your now running ics.
This could be an issue that hasn't been explored as your not the average user. I for 1 limit my messages at 200 a contact.

Thanks RT, but its so slow/congested it won't let me delete them either! I tried by going into the message app and choosing delete threads.
It loads every time I reboot the phone but if I do anything on it at all, it just shows me a black screen.
On first load I can see all the messages, but if I go into one of them, even one that is only 2 threads long, it just freezes on me.
Any idea how I can delete the SMS data without going through the message app?
Or am I staring down the barrel at a factory reset? (this isn't the end of the world as I only got the phone yesterday and haven't really installed anything yet)
Right then,
So instead of trying to do something with the stock message app to delete the sms messages, I downloaded delete old messages app and ran that before loading up the stock message software.
I think the next time I restore them I will try and put the 200 cap on them like my SGS did (I thought this was a limitation of the phone not an actual setting that I could adjust! I presume I'll find it in the stock SMS settings somewhere?)
Thanks for the help RT.
I've had that issue since froyo. anytime I restore thousands of texts, the messaging app just hangs. On the rare occasion it'll come to life but for the most part unusable. only solution seems to be to restore a small portion of your texts or have a blank slate

Quit being so popular. Too many SMS.
I made a second label in my GMail I call SMS Backup and every few weeks I'll change my backed-up messages from SMS to the Backup label so when/if I wipe and restore, it doesn't pull in all my messages. If I need anything, I can easily search for it.

To delete your messages / settings go into the sms app under Settings-Apps and clear all your data.
Yes you find the sms limit setting in the general setting within the sms app.

I am big SMS/Texting lover and currently have 16600 SMS Messages. On our previous iPhone we have thousand SMS, iPhone Message still respond very good and quickly.
But why on my Galaxy Nexus after we reach 16600 our Messaging App really slowly and random refresh. Each time we need to write new SMS Message the application will be freeze for a while. :crying:
What's a problem? Does Ice Cream Sandwich can't handle huge SMS data? And why there are an option to AUTO DELETED when some amount of SMS/MMS data reached?
Another problem is... why I can search SMS Full Text? Search Box on Messaging App only search SMS data but not the sender. Any clue about it?
Any solution to Speed Up Messaging UP and keep our SMS data? Please Help
Put this in the Q & A section

Weird issue
Usually you're one in a million users who has that many texts going in and out on the phone.
Try another SMS app? Go SMS?

Sorry for wrong section.. But I can't move this tread... maybe some Moderator or Admin able to do it?
In my Country Texting/SMS is really cheap so we still use it for daily communication, beside that fact that our country Smartphone not popular yet. So.. many of my friends and family using Texting/SMS as my daily communications...
And again.. on iPhone with same size of data (16600) Message App still running smoothly... and that only on iPhone 4 with iOS 5 of course.
Any clue how to fix it? Does there any Backup SMS app that can handle period time? example I want to backup my SMS data 1 month ago and before it and only keep the fresh one on my phone...
Its slow because the read speed of the flash memory can't keep up. The app hangs until all contents been read.
The iOS messaging app probably indexes all messages as they come, preventing an initial rescan every time the app is launched.
That's just my guess.
Try deleting some messages though lol
Titanium backup backs up messages.
Gosms works well, as does Handecent messenger.
Try finding that sweet spot of message overflow, then set your auto deletion to that

I don't understand why people keep thousands of SMS messages.
Sure you use it as daily communications, but how many times do you go back and read messages you sent a week ago? I bet you NONE. Go delete your messages and stop being a digital hoarder.

Is there a way to delete messages by date? I've tried backing up and restoring them using SMS backup and restore and set a date but they all came back. If I try to delete threads my phone locks up. I have about 20,000 texts
I wish there was a way to see them through windows explorer and delete them that way... I can't get anything to open. Ah!!!
If you use SMS backup and you use your gmail to sign in. You can go into gmail from your comp.(probably your phone) abs you can delete them by date that way.

That's a copy though. My phone has locked up and had to been forced off like 6 times now. There are too many to delete it just freezes. I set a limit in go SMS days ago and it never deletes any. This is ridiculous.
And now go SMS pro won't open either. And the phone can't force close it. The whole thing just locks up wtf.

SMS backup & restore makes an XML file on my external SD. Go SMS pro shouldn't be backing anything up.
I use the stock app to send MMS because go uploads it to their servers and that creeps me out lol. But the stock app CANNOT handle that many texts being there.
Go is working a little better (I can send a text) now that I went in recovery and cleared cache, davik and fixed permissions.
I still think I need to try and get rid of old texts but every time I try programs just lock up.
Have you tried History eraser?
Or delete data for it. Just dump them all.

Well I have SMS backup +. It syncs all my SMS, call logs, etc with Google. I don't have any XML in my phone. Whenever I restore my phone I DL the app and sign in and hit restore and it pulls it from my Google account. That's what I was showing you earlier. But I'd have to test if it actually syncs when I erase from gmail to the app.

History eraser or historyeraser?? I'll try! But I don't know if it'll work. On SMS backup & restore I hit delete all messages and after an hour the little circle was still spinning.
Can someone please tell me where the texts are stored. Any app just freezes my phone and I have to reboot.
I'd love to watch you drag this along for two more days but I think I speak for everyone on this site. Just factory reset your phone and get over it.

That would have been extremely moronic to do. I just deleted the SMS database. I also got in touch with the backup & restore people about batch removing texts from the XML output.
What a stupid suggestion.
Hey man I've had this happen to me. It happened when I would flash a new rom, and didn't turn off the auto delete after 200 and then restored my 7k texts... Honestly once in a while I'd get lucky and be able to usually... I had to re flash the ROM. Haven't found a better solution yet

I used to use SMS backup plus to save texts from the ex wife to my gmail account. On my OG EVO it worked perfect. With the LG Optimus G it doesn't save incoming texts to my gmail account, only outbound. First, does anyone know a fix for this?
If there is no fix, can anyone suggest another app that will backup texts to my gmail? Currently, I'm using the stock messaging app, but not opposed to a 3rd party app like go sms pro. As long as I can specify which thread to backup to my gmail. Would like it to have a nice popup option too when the screen if off (like SMS Popup), but that is just a nice option not needed.
I like to backup these texts from her in case she decides to try some funny court stuff, or doesn't remember agreeing to something related to our child. It's a safety measure.
Thanks.
I have been using that app with success, it backs up inbound and outbound in order on my gmail... Thats weird, what rom are you on?

I have used this and it works.
My personal recommendation is Google Voice. While it doesn't restore messages to your phone, it will keep a record of every single text message sent/received that can also be accessed online.
As a tech, SMS Backup is a nightmare. I can't count the number of times a phone has come in with thousands of text messages (the record is 43K messages) that barely boots because of it.
The customer has SMS Backup installed and after we spend the time doing a hard reset they then restore the text messages. Now all that time was wasted as the phone needs to be hard reset yet again and it's somehow our fault. In some cases where there is a tin of messages, SMS Backup corrupts messages and messaging app data.
Now that I've given my $0.02, if you are going to use a backup app, try "Super Backup". It's backups are very similar to the Cellebrite machine that we techs use to backup contacts and text messages. I've even been able to restore messages on the Cellebrite using a "Super Backup" SMS backup file.
From the Super Backup thread;
"You can backup apps & contacts & SMS & Call logs & Bookmarks & Calendars to the SD Card or Gmail."
Now before you say Titanium Backup. Try to run Titanium Backup without root. You can't. Super Backup only needs and checks for root if you try backing up your apps.

That is the app that isn't backing up my incoming messages.
Since a few of you aren't having any issues with it, what settings are being used? As I said before, I had no issues on my evo 4g but doesn't want to save those texts from her with the LG.
I have no reason or desire to restore these texts back onto my phone. I just want them backed up to my gmail like sms backup + does, just in case I need them to cover myself.

Never thought of using google voice that way. I guess it might be time to integrate voice with my sprint number soon then. Does it put the sms into gmail in a similar way that sms backup plus does?
I find it funny as I just went through some of those backup, and it did backup some incoming texts when I first got the phone. It just hasn't been working right since right before x-mas. I have now installed an older version of the app to see if that might work. If not I will look more into google voice. I already have gvoice but never really used it.
You will go to google.com/voice and login and there will be a text message label with all of them, it does work very well for that

I did before I started this thread, but haven't heard back yet. I might have figured it out in a round about way. Testing it now, but it seems to save both outgoing and incoming when I tell it to backup everyone and not just a specific group.

Jottacloud has sms mms backup, and it works great!
Just wanted to see if anyone else has been experiencing the same thing. I haven't experienced any lag with this phone whatsoever except for the stock messaging app.
1) Sometimes when I open the messaging app, the preview of a text messaging thread may be from many hours ago and then "refresh" itself to the most recent text. Essentially when I open the app, the preview shows a much older text message and then after a couple seconds will show the most recent one.
2) Sometimes when I push send on a message, it will take a second before the text is actually sent so if I continue to text, it will add on to the previous message until sent.
The only way I've found to correct this is to switch to the "SMS/MMS" tab, which seems to correct the lag, but of course any time you push the back button out of the app, it goes back to the deault "all messages" tab when opening. I also tried holding down the tab titles and it brings you to a screen which it almost looks like HTC was going to give the option to remove other tabs but the boxes cannot be unchecked.
Anyone else running into these issues? Find a solution?

I have these two issues.
This stock HTC Messages app automatically closes when you back out of sending a reply message, so it doesn't refresh the preview list like previous HTC phones on a reply. On the same token, it appears that it completely quits the Messages app, requiring you to load the names from the Contacts app when you open the Messages app without replying to a message. If you press Home rather than Back, when you open the Messages app again, it loads the messaging screen with the contact you most recently messaged, the person to whom you just replied. If you open the app and send a message, then press Back, it loads the list again, and everything is all good. It's all very odd.
Well glad to see I'm not the only one. I had tried Handcent, Chomp, etc with nothing but lag and other issues. Thanks to the response from NSRpxndxhou, I tried Textra and actually really like it. Best replacement text app I've tried.
I like how HTC's stock messaging app looks, but it ended up simply being too slow. I switched to Textra, enabled the dark theme and never looked back. Silky smooth performance, even with giant threads.
I am in the middle of an email conversation with the guys at Textra. I love the app. But my group messages are not working correctly. Those guys are great. Within one day I got an email with an update to try.... make that two updates. Just got another one while typing this.

Textra does seem nice, but there are a couple things I would miss from the stock messaging app. I like the ability to search ALL your text messages to find a specific text. I also prefer to have the time stamp on each and every text like the stock application does. I also don't like how it shows the contacts phone number below their name.
I would likely use this as a stock replacement if they were able to integrate all those features.

You may want to consider going into messaging->settings->general and adding a text limit (default at 200). When you do this you will notice your messaging to be a bit more zippy. This is because its not trying to open all of your old previous messages (which can be in the thousands).

Had this issue as well, found out that if you go to the stock messaging app settings > MMS > then connection settings, this gives you the APN. Copy that URL and paste it in the Textra MMS settings.
