Note 8 lte phone apps? - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooti

I'm with at&t and am going to get the note 8 lte, which are the best apps to make phone calls, and also a video call?
Sent from my Dell Streak using xda premium

I heard that the at&t n5120 cant make phone call simply by putting in a sim. Can your note make phone calls the same way your phone works without using any app ? If no then the only app that works for me and free is viber. Gg talk was good but now it is dead

The i467 does not have the phone software, you are correct.
I use GrooveIP for voice over Google Voice and Hangouts for the rest.

happy to see someone using dell streak now...
Dell streak 5 was an amazing device.... Very poorly marketed... Dell would have been in a different part of the economics had they done a good job...

Yes,that's what me and my brother have always thought,Dell had it right before anyone else, now everyone is making the same size, they didn't advertise it,so no one knew about it. Its still a great phone,I've had mine for 2 1/2 yrs.,I wish Dell would have made the streak 2,opus 1?. I haven't upgraded in 8 months because there hasn't been anything I've wanted alot more yet.I'm still on Froyo and would like to move up to Jelly Bean though: ),I will get the note 8,and still looking at phones, note 3,z ultra,...ect. . . I like the Lenovo k900,but don't know if that would work with at&t.

Dialer App?
I have a ATT Galaxy Note 8 with a wireless data plan. It clearly has a micro-SIM and a LTE modem.
Really, all I think it needs is the actual Dialer app. Which leads me to the question: how would I install it?
I know that in some european markets the Note 8 has phone capabilities... would it be simpler to flash a euro image onto it?

If you are getting the Note 8 with the intention of using it as your primary phone, I'll chime in and say I haven't been happy with the quality of VoIP on AT&T's HSPA network. Your results may be better with LTE, but I think there is something about AT&T's network that makes it less suitable for VoIP than Verizon. I don't know for sure, I'm speculating based on what I've experienced.

Thanks y'all, I will be looking into this,I would send text messages on it mostly, and also having the ability to make a call would be nice too,I will reply on how it does when I get it and start trying things out!

I used groove ip, and made a phone call and it sounded great!! It was real clear, now im just going through google voice settings trying to receive calls, I'm using Talkatone too, in google voice you have a different number that people see when you call, it says you can port-use your cell number, but it cost $20 to do it, which I think I'm going to end up doing, just still trying to receive calls, it says to click on make a new number in google voice, then make sure forward calls is checked,...I think I'll get the receiving calls working soon: )..also the sending text are working!

What a big let down, you can imagine I just got it today (Note 8.0 LTE) the whole time I thought this is one big phone/tablet that will let me use it as a phone because of the SIM card slot and 4g and LTE abilities!! Only to find out that only international version can make calls!! WTF!! Hope to try your ways otherwise I am hoping someone will come up with a rom that enable this feature for good!

It'll work as a phone great, I just called my Dad today and had him call me back on talkatone, and it sounds great, also groove ip too, just get the app, then go on your computer to google voice and get a google voice number, it let's you scan through a bunch, just pick one and follow the steps, it sounds better than using my cell phone on speaker!

Why not just return it and buy the N5100? VoIP calling works well over a strong signal, but is LTE really worth it when a phone version is available?

Its illegal...but yes
It is called cloning a device. They used to do it for pagers but that is a major difference. Doubt you will find anyone to do it for a cell phone but theoretically it could be done.

That would cost money... I joke, but really this is the way to go. I have 5 lines on my family plan. We still only use 200-300 if the 1500 landline minutes.

Aren't there also a lot of technical problems with a clone?
EX: A call or text comes in to your number and only one of the phones gets it.

It is how Vonage and Majic jack work as well as a good part of the Sprint Airave. They just use your internet connection.

Ok, so on the most current Miui build Wifi works and voice calling isn't quite there yet. How would I go about setting something like this up? Do I need to get a specific app?

More accurately, it is called Voice Over Internet Protocol. Goole voice is a specific service that uses the protocol, similar to the issue of Kleenex being a specific brand of tissue paper.
I like to clear up confusion before it gets too far - we Americans have redefined too many words out of ignorance and fallacious assumptions as it is ;-)
@John - I haven't looked at VoiP solutions for Android in several months, but GrooveIP was a great app to use Google Voice for this purpose. At the time that I discovered it myself, the official Google Voice app didn't support voice calls on Android, so the only free way I had found involved an intermediary internet number (called a DID number, using a SIP account... it gets convoluted and confusing too damn fast, and wasn't very stable... plus, all of the free SIP providers I could find seemed to shut down around the end of June, for some reason).
What are you trying to accomplish? The only use that readily comes to my mind is to avoid using limited anytime minutes by using unlimited data instead - I rooted a friend's phone for this purpose, because his girlfriend always tore through all of their minutes in the first week of the month, then *****ed at him when she was unable to call him (obviously, the *****ing came later that evening, lol) I should explain that they're on a prepaid provider that doesn't do any free mobile to mobile minutes, etc. Just re read you4r last post more closely, answering my own question
And I mistyped one part - google voice didn't support outbound calls, lol - one word makes all the difference. Actually, I think the issue was that outbound calls used minutes you have to purchase... it wasn't the ideal situation for my friend's budget...
Anyway, my friend also had an Evo that he was unable to flash to Virgin, so I initially tested on that using just a wifi connection. It works great, and actually save my ass one night when a bad flash rendered my Epic unusable, and I couldn't get to my laptop for another 10 hours. I found a McDonald's or Starbucks with the free hotspot service whenever I needed to make or receive a call
EDIT: I am doubting the accuracy of my statements... but I am certain that GrooveIP does not need an active mobile network and does not eat up minutes, because Virgin doesn't do free incoming calls (at least not on their lowest Android plan). So I may have some details mixed up, but GrooveIP will work.
I should mention that GrooveIP was a $4 app when I set my friend up, no trial version to be found either

I guess I was trying to find a way to make calls using the most current Miui build. It only works on Wifi and when I make or receive a call you can't hear anything so I was hoping I could ring a roundabout way while they are working on it. Thanks for the thorough response.

Call and text forwarding to tablet?

I would like an app that allows calls and texts to be forwarded to my tablet when I'm at home. I would like to be able to send and receive texts and receive incoming and make outgoing calls. I know that tablet talk supports the texting, but what about the phone calls? I would like to receive them at my verizon number, and it would be nice if both my tablet and phone ring when a call is being received.
Like I said, I would only like this to work at home when both phones are on the same wifi network.
EXIT: If there is no simple way to do the call forwarding, or if that would not work well, it would be great if someone could recommend an app to me which notifys me when my phone misses a call.

I recently found the app tablet talk and it is awesome.
Works with wifi in your home or even through blue tooth and also does call forwarding. I just use it as a caller I'd to see if it's worth getting up to pick up my phone even.
Exactly what I wanted and I don't even carry my phone around in the house anymore.

tablet talk costs?
When I tried to sync sms on my Galaxy Nexus with the Nexus 7 via Tablet Talk, it locks up at 8 percent. I've tried removing cache, uninstalling then reinstalling, using Bluetooth AND WiFi. It always fails at 8 percent. Wtf?
They synced instantly for me. 4.1 Galaxy S and 4.1 Nexus 7.

I wonder is the different os versions is an issue. One wouldnt think so with so few devices with JB on em. I'm spoiled by aokp on my GN, so I've been reluctant to flash JB as a daily driver. Everything else works great, controlling the dialing of the phone, caller id, any new SMS received too. Its only when I try and "sync all SMS from phone" and it fails at 8 percent every time. I've emailed the developer.
I just got a response from the developer. They emailed me a copy of the app, labeled "TabletTalk143_synctest", and it worked beautifully over WiFi and Bluetooth. Extremely rapid response!

Hello everyone, Im new to this site and phone. My previous device was the Nexus S 4G and i must say my e4gt is a huge improvement. My only issue that i have is the inability while on a conference call or a merged call to be able to hang up on either callers without ending both calls. Does anyone have a solution to this? Is there any type of rom or software i can download that will give me the ability to choose which caller to disconnect? Im willing to pay $100.00 sent to your paypal account for this solution. 3G query

Hi
Been using a note 2 for 12 months now and quite frankly am bored stiff.
Also to add insult to injury I am on 3 mobile network who in their wisdom have a funny SIM rule whereby a phone sim cannot be used in a tablet.
The result is data being blocked to the device.
I plan to end the contract early and go to a new carrier.
So can I have a show of hands please.
What network can this device be used on as a phone
Thanks for your input
Lee

I'm on Three too, but a tablet contact. Amazing speed and coverage but can't include calls or texts in the package, which is silly.
As to other networks you're likely to needed a tablet/data contact to avoid a similar fate. Giffgaff is a good bet but I'd definitely contact whomever you choose first to confirm.

Have you actually tried? I've used my 3 SIM in my Note 1, 2, 3, 8.0 3G and my 10.1 3G (when I had it) all worked fine?

They will work but eventually Three work detect that the device you're using isn't a phone and cut off data. They check IMEI numbers.

I agree it is a phone...Samsung should get involved as it could lose potential customers from buying such device but cant if there tied into 3.
I personally am willing to buy out of remaining 12 months and go to new carrier than continue using a note 2 which am very bored of...
This rule is just so outrageous 3 would need to get 100s or even thousands of complaints to remove this...but then how many people want to use a note 8 or any other tablet as a phone...not many ide say

Can I add a second phone number to my phone?

Hey guys, I have a T-Mobile galaxy s3 and I want to add a second phone number to my phone for business instead of getting a second phone. Right now I am using groove IP which works most of the time, but I would like something more reliable. I don't mind paying for another service to get this working if that's what needs to be done, but I do want to be able to know if it is a business call opposed to personal.
1) Is this possible?
2) If so, will I be able to distinguish business calls frompersonal calls before I answer?
