Hello friends,
Just upgraded from the evo 4g through Craigslist & going to get the Evo LTE for my often travels to Texas.
I have done a few hours of reading and one thing I can't grasp is what is the dominate rom for our S2s?
I only really want root for backup & wifi hotspot. I would prefer to make sure I have no issues with gps or Bluetooth as well.
[*]What is the most stable setup?
[*]Most curated or updated lovingly?
[*]Any big drawbacks to your suggestion?
I appreciate the knowledge!
@IdeaJason
Gingerbread or ICS?
This should be posted in Q/A, but, that's irreleavnt...
In my opinion, the most stable ROMs are the stock Samsung builds. Stable is the key word. It (the EL29 Gingerbread ROM) is the most widely-available build, installed on thousands of active devices. If there were problems with it, we'd know/the problems would be out there. This is the "official" ROM for the phone.
There are a lot of ROMs for you to play with. Personally, I love all of Calkulin's ROMs, all extremely speedy and robust. Stable as well.
I currently have the FE07 ICS ROM, but that's because I'm an Android nerd. It has it's bugs, but it's an official Samsung leak.
All in all, just play it safe. Obviously, things like CM9 or Codename Android are still in Alpha builds, so they are not what you're looking for.
Sfhub uploads the One-Click ROM/Modem/Kernel install files - these kick ass. He has them for all builds.
Sorry if this post was a little vague, I'm in a hurry to work.
There's no such thing as a dominant rom for any popular device here on xda, because there are so many awesome developers making stuff for it. Also, development now is strong enough that bluetooth and gps are working on pretty much any rom unless otherwise stated. General rule of thumb to finding popular/updated roms is to look at when the thread for the rom was started, how many views/replies has been made in the thread, and when the rom was last updated. After that, you can determine for yourself.
I agree there is no dominiate rom. Each rom has its selling points. All in All all roms we have are awesome. This kind of thread will only lead to flaming so lets not open that can of worms.

Hi my name is Larry..... Hi Larry.....and I am a flashaholic, blazer ROM is my ROM of choice lol ohhhhh yeah

thanks
Thanks all for your replies.
I'm not looking to start a flame war at all, just trying to save myself a ton of tinker time before going on a trip.
I have everything rooted from my Viewsonic Gtab to my old EVO and they both had bugs that affected my performance on the road.
I want stable but I also want root backup & hotspot. So I know I can't use the Samsung stuff. I would prefer ICS if it is stable but ginger is fine if it the only option.
I'm just looking for opinions. Even ones that are unpopular if they are worthy.
(Sucks changing phones. I invested so much time learning to root & all the different roms that when you change its like going to a new OS.)
Thanks again all who have & will post.

I have told several people the same thing and like I said I have tried everything, but blazer has all the functionality and no quirks and great battery life that you are looking for. IMO, just from my experience stay away from ICS until source code is released. I am not for sure but it seems like all the devs are just trying to make the most out of a good situation with the leaks right now but once they get something solid they will be able to make ICS just as good as their gingerbread roms. Shout out to all the devs for all your hard work I envy your skill. Thank you

Upgrading my girlfriends evo tonight with latest and greatest. She was currently running cm7. I want a latest updated ROM, however the video recorder and MMS need to work. I see the the ffc and 4g is common not working which is OK.
Can someone also please suggest a kernel to match up with this. I prefer aosp but willing to try a modified sense 3.0+ ROM.
Thanks for the help! I have a toro nexus and do not view the evo fourm much!

So I guess question is very subjective, guess I'm looking for most stable with least amount of things broken...
I see that some ROMs are jb based but have issues. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Wow, do these threads REALLY need to be created.... and locked.... on a daily basis?

Hmmm, so instead of using your time to give me a suggestion, u have to troll the thread instead. Thunbs up to u buddy.
Let me clarify. I know where to find the ROMs, kernels, themes etc. I know there are many choices when it comes to roms (aosp, sense, miui etc). I am not looking for some to hold my hand and explain to me the differences, because truth is that I probably have tried many if not all of them on my nexus. However the situation I am in is that my girl friends evos is outdated running a stable version of cm7 and timemat kernel and is starting to act up. I was thinking of just reflashing cm7 with a fresh start, however gingerbread is very outdated.
So because this is not my phone, I do not have the time to test ROM/kernel combos like I do on my nexus. That is why I am simply asking for suggestions from my fellow xda members.
I am looking for a aosp jelly bean ROM (if not ICS). I need this ROM to be stable (FFC and 4g borked not a big deal) but must have MMS and video recording. From what I can tell, these are the most common issues.
So please give me some suggestions of something I can flash on her phone without biting off my head. I would greatly appreciate it.
I was also curious about theatest and greatest kernel since timat is way outdated, however I will save that for a further question because trollers get mad.
Posts like this are against the "rules" because it could cause issues between devs or members trying to say who is better or what not.
Your best bet is to use search or go read op's of the 10 or so ICS roms.
SFM Blazin Fast Reloaded OG Evo.

I would suggest that you try them and make up your own mind on what you consider stable and usable. Everyone has their own opinions.
I would also suggest that you read the rules and realize that these threads are not allowed based on the reasons made above.
Hello, my name is Shahin. I am getting a Sprint SGSIII soon. I would like to know a few things.
First of all, i would like to know how stable aosp/aokp/etc (non touchwhiz) is.
second, What is the most stable OC kernel for 4.2.1 what is the max safe OC
third what roms does it work with
and fourth, any recommendations on roms?
Thanks in advance
also, any other advice? im coming from the E4GT... from boost mobile. also i had a ZTE Warp. thanks again
The first thing you should do is check out THIS thread. As for advice on Roms, that's all subjective. What I mean is that there are a lot of variables. How you use your Rom. What you like ? AOSP, TW, AOKP, CM,.... As for the Kernel question, it depends on what Rom choice you make. How high you can OC depends partially on your device. Not all devices are the same. One thing to keep in mind is that, just because you can Overclock to lets say 2.1gHz . That does not guarantee that your device will be any smoother, faster, or more stable. In fact on some devices it has the exact opposite effect. Keep in mind that what you want is an overall better performing device.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Galaxy S3. It's a really good phone and I'm sure you'll love it.
As far as your questions:
In my opinion, AOSP is pretty stable. There are some things that have been reported, such as hand-off issues between 4G and 3G, but all-in-all it's stable enough for most users.
This is typically a phone-by-phone and user-by-user type of question. It also depends on which Rom you're running. Some kernels don't play well with some Roms. One of the more popular Kernels on here is Ktoonsez's kernel. Just make sure you download the correct one for the Rom you're using (4.1.x vs 4.2.x, AOSP vs. TW, etc). BMS also is relatively widely used. In terms of overclocking, it really depends on your phone. Some phones handle it better than others. Hard to say what your "optimal" oc speed will be. In my opinion, the processor is powerful enough to handle most everything w/o OC-ing, but others like it extra-smooth.
Any Roms in the Sprint Forum will work with your Sprint GS3. Do not flash international Roms or Mods on this phone. They will, without a doubt, brick your phone and you'll get ridiculed by a majority of XDA. If you want to flash a Rom, just look through the original post and the last 5-10 pages of the thread to see if there are any issues with it.
Rom recommendations are kind of tricky. My setup is shown in my Signature, and I really like it. But there are many different tastes out there and you just have to find the Rom that fits yours.
Other Advice:
XDA can be a finicky community at times (myself included). But despite some snarky responses, we're mostly here to help.
It's always best to do a search before posting a question, and we love people who read through and find what they're looking for.
Hitting the thanks button is always good if someone helps you out.
Have fun flashing!

Are you on Cricket?
I'm not horribly familiar with Cricket, but I've been told that once you get the phone working on the Cricket network, that Sprint Roms will also work for it. CNexus is much more familiar with it than I am.
no, i was just wondering... but thanks for the info.
Yes, you can flash ROMs made for the Sprint version if you are on cricket. Should not mess with whatever flashing procedure you took or whatnot.
But of course, always make a backup
Hi guys and gals.
I am not very familiar with the AT&T/Rogers ROMs and I would like to hear people's opinion on what they run most of the time. From what I understand so far, Task650's seems very popular and from running it for a couple of days, I can see it's very smooth and fast. Vanilla RootBox seems to have the very latest bells and whistle which is always nice, but it also has nightlies which can mean a lot of flashing and less stability.
Am I wrong to think that a good pick for a great ROM that is very stable is Task650s while something very cutting edge would be Vanilla Rootbox?
I like the fun stuff like everyone else, yet I also want stuff to work. I'm okay with the occasional FC, it comes with the rooting experience but issues with getting calls, mms, sms, or basic functionality loss is kind of a big deal.
Thanks!
Flashing takes approximately 35 seconds (including gapps). It probably took you...I'm guessing... 3 minutes to write that post. In that time you could've flashed one of the ROMs and be that much closer to figuring out which one you like better.
Also, no ones forcing you to flash all of the nightlies. That's why they invented changelogs. If you see something cool in the changelog, flash it. If not go for a walk, hit on some chicks, or terrorize a group of school children.
Alright gotta go I need to start a thread asking which flavor ice cream I should be eating.
From my history of flashing roms - Task's AOKP has given me the best experience. Smoothness and stability is the definitely the best with his rom, his roms also come with tons of a bells and whistles and if anything is ever broken, he is pretty quick to fix it.
Haven't tried rootbox in a few months - by bells and whistles, what exactly do you mean?
EDIT: I'm on Telus and have had no issues with Task's AOKP with regards to receiving calls/sms/mms... I think you should be fine.

I was mostly remembering that for awhile on the Rezound, ROMs were out but SMS/MMS wouldn't work well. I didn't see that issue with any rom I tried for the G3.
Well I tried both and when I look at features, I find it hard to tell them apart. Today's version of Rootbox has HALO which I think can be useful, and there's also the PIE stuff but I don't care about that feature.
I wouldn't be surprised if Task comes up with a version with HALO integrated, I'd definitely go for that.
I remember for the Rezoune, there were ROMs like ViperRez which was packed with features, but wasn't very stable.
On the other hand, there was stuff like CleanRom which was basically Vanilla with the bloat removed. Nothing exciting, but very stable.
So all I wanted to know was am I correct to think that Task releases less roms that perhaps don't have all the latest stuff but always runs solid, while Vanilla has the latest at perhaps the cost of a few more bugs.
Thread cleaned, and, thread closed...This is not a place for self-righteousness and rudeness.
Additionally, this looks a lot like a "best rom" thread, which we do not do around here, read, learn and form your own opinion, and always be courteous and respectful in your posts and exchanges with users.
Try to help, and, if you cannot, log off and find some other place to be ungrateful. This is not the place for that.
Hi all, I am not new to using new ROMs on my older Android devices (loved using AOKP on my S2!), and am now looking for options for my S4, which is still using the factory ROM and is still not rooted or unlocked.
I've been lurking for a while, and don't know which ROMs are the better options for my phone. Reading threads I get an idea that for a 4.4.X-based ROM, PAC-ROM LP Beta-1 seems like a good option. Also, as far as Lollipop-based ROMs go, it seems that the JFLTE-GPE 5.0.1 one by Danvdh, Kryten2k35, Googy_Anas, and Ktoonsez is doing pretty good with users as a daily driver.
Now, I know the usual "go ahead, try one, if you don't like it try another" response applies, but I'm looking for more useful responses. I'm leaning towards the GPE Lollipop version at the moment.
Thanks for any advice given!!!

Not sure how you can get more useful responses when no one is you. You need to decide for yourself if you want Touchwiz features or not, pretty graphics or plain vanilla, If you try non-Touchwiz ROMs you lose a lot of stock features you may be used to...but if you have been flashing ROMs for a while you would know that. So mate, only you know what is right for you.
Thanks for your reply Kenny, I was wondering more in terms of caveats of ROMs concerning the TMo version of the S4, so I could either avoid possible problems, or look up towards an awesome ROM.
BTW, to hell with Touchwiz lol!
Here's a useful response, read the threads for the roms your interested in, all of them and see what people are posting, if you see a lot of wining and misery you'll get the impression that that rom sucks.
Happy faces and many thanks, good rom.
The other factor is, do you need a reliable phone on a daily basis?
Pick a safe rom.
The further you move away from stock, potentially the less reliable the rom/phone.
If reliability isn't a factor and you have nothing better to do all or most of the day but fix your phone so you can "like" something then go wild and try some unofficial lollipop.
Unofficial because it hasn't been released for the Tmo S4 yet.
Don't badmouth TouchWiz.
Pp.

The biggest thing about staying with a Touchwiz based ROM is WiFi-Calling. You will lose this with CM or AOSP based ROMs. WiFi calling is the only thing that makes my cell work well at a few places I frequent, so is a necessary condition for me. YMMV.
Rob
Valuable input indeed, thanks! Reading threads at the moment on both TW and AOSP based ROMs...
