Best rom/ kernel setup - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Upgrading my girlfriends evo tonight with latest and greatest. She was currently running cm7. I want a latest updated ROM, however the video recorder and MMS need to work. I see the the ffc and 4g is common not working which is OK.
Can someone also please suggest a kernel to match up with this. I prefer aosp but willing to try a modified sense 3.0+ ROM.
Thanks for the help! I have a toro nexus and do not view the evo fourm much!

So I guess question is very subjective, guess I'm looking for most stable with least amount of things broken...
I see that some ROMs are jb based but have issues. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Hmmm, so instead of using your time to give me a suggestion, u have to troll the thread instead. Thunbs up to u buddy.
Let me clarify. I know where to find the ROMs, kernels, themes etc. I know there are many choices when it comes to roms (aosp, sense, miui etc). I am not looking for some to hold my hand and explain to me the differences, because truth is that I probably have tried many if not all of them on my nexus. However the situation I am in is that my girl friends evos is outdated running a stable version of cm7 and timemat kernel and is starting to act up. I was thinking of just reflashing cm7 with a fresh start, however gingerbread is very outdated.
So because this is not my phone, I do not have the time to test ROM/kernel combos like I do on my nexus. That is why I am simply asking for suggestions from my fellow xda members.
I am looking for a aosp jelly bean ROM (if not ICS). I need this ROM to be stable (FFC and 4g borked not a big deal) but must have MMS and video recording. From what I can tell, these are the most common issues.
So please give me some suggestions of something I can flash on her phone without biting off my head. I would greatly appreciate it.
I was also curious about theatest and greatest kernel since timat is way outdated, however I will save that for a further question because trollers get mad.

Posts like this are against the "rules" because it could cause issues between devs or members trying to say who is better or what not.
Your best bet is to use search or go read op's of the 10 or so ICS roms.

I would suggest that you try them and make up your own mind on what you consider stable and usable. Everyone has their own opinions.
I would also suggest that you read the rules and realize that these threads are not allowed based on the reasons made above.

[Q] What ROM To Use?

I am ready to dive in with the Unrevoked3 method to root my Desire, I take it I will then be able to load a custom ROM, however I'm a little overwhelmed by the choices. Is there a comprehensive list somewhere or can someone make any suggestions? I'm after stability and reliability although I am interested in what the whole ROM scene has to offer.
I presume that all my paid apps will still work as well?
i would stick to the rom you are using because if you have to ask that question, you haven't done enough research, if there was a single answer to what rom to use, then there wouldn't be so many around
so the final answer is, stick to the stock froyo that you've got already, there's nothing to be gained from other roms considering you didn't specify what it is you were looking for

Yes I am doing research, this question is part of the 'research' process. Thanks for your help.

- Yes, you should be able to flash a custom rom, if you can follow the instructions.
- There is no comprehensive list, the number of rom's and the changes are to large to keep it up to date, or do you offer to create one
- suggestions will tell you to use rom a, b, s, or z, depending on the users preferences. The only thing you can do is to read the rom description, and start skimming and following the rom's which description you liked.
A thing you left out, and what is normally mentioned in a question like this, do you prefer sense or non-sense?
To finish: I use LeeDroiD V2.1 and I am happy with it, it's stable / reliable, and it's Sense based.
Now just wait for the OD, DeFrost, Pays, Cyanogen (just some examples) and other rom users to give there opinion,
and then decide
^^ pretty much what he said!!
No one can tell you what to use, only give their opinions. Ultimately you'll have to read the threads and just try the ROMs until you find one you're happy with. I've gone back to stock as it does what I need it to
i just love when dudes get all condescending as if they were never overwhelmed when they first started out. first they yell at you and infer that you're an idiot and then 4 posts later, they wind up actually helping.
i guess it's like hazing for nerds.
seriously though, i'm gonna answer all your questions right here and now:
go with CM6. then download another one and try it. then download another one and try it. and then... come back here and tell us what your opinion is. you know, pay it forward and don't become one of those condescending dorks after you have figured it all out.
that is all. i'm going bowling with your father...

Anyway, I'm on AuraxTsense now (check my sig for full details). I like the concept of undervolting for extended battery life, however before I dive in to ROMs, what can cause damage? I will avoid overclocking ROMs for that reason, anything else to watch out for?
What's the advantage of Cyanogen over others? I also read that Modaco ROMs are designed with stability in mind.
Is there any way to back up settings to restore when switching ROMs? Or should I just back each one up with all my settings and use that?
In the last week or so I've tried at least
- Cyanogen
- PirateRUM
- Some PAYS Sense one
- OpenDesire
- ShadowSense
+ another 1 or 2 I forget now
with Alex-V's one still to try.
The main thing I'd say is:
- Do you want Sense?
- Do you want GApps and other fluff preinstalled?
Try them and see...
Personally
- I like OD but it needs the Sense music player
- CM has no market, and I have not worked out how cutdown it's GApps package yet to remove fluff
I have been using cyanogenmod 6 for a few days now.
And im not going anywere anytime soon
However, like they say, try em all
Aurax is rocking my boat right now although struggling to work out how to install Maps..
What do you like about Cyanogen?
The ui is good. It just works. Try out for yourself. Painless to install. Ohh and the battery performance is alot better then the stock rom

[Q] Rooted Phone (YAY!).... Which ROM to use?!?!!?

I know this has probably been asked to death, but the suggested results returned nothing...
Did a titanium backup, and a rom manager backup Via clockwork..... But now i cannot decide on which ROM to use!
It also doesnt help that when im reading specs... i have NO idea what 70% of it means, so its hard to base my own decision. So.....
Which ROM do you use? What are its best features? Is it a noticeable difference from Stock to Custom? Are they buggy? I have so many questions, but dont wanna be a bother... So maybe if you could just give me benefits of the one you use, that would be great.
Thank you
So long as you've got your backup, just go ahead and try some of the roms that are out there. If you don't like a particular rom, flash another.
Personally I like the Sense based roms, I have tried others but I keep going back to Sense. I'm currently using InsertCoin which based on a Desire HD rom, small fonts compared to the Desire, but other features including Skins (themes), HTCSense.com phone finder (which doesn't always work).
Are you wanting to try a non Sense based rom? There are plenty out there to play with, MIUI, Cyanogen, Gingerbread roms too.
In this forum, there is a thread which compares all the available ROM's (I'll post the link once I find it)
As @UKseagull mentioned, try different ROM's , You might find a suitable one for you !
Jeeezus ****ing christ. There needs to be a sticky to say that a rom is a rom that YOU, the user must decide on. It is not about what we think, it is about what you think. Your own PERSONAL PREFERENCE!
This is prob the 10th thread this week about that same topic.

Why are you so angry if someone asks a perfectly in place question?!
There are really many roms for the Desire, and I am _sure_ most of them are not stable.
So, if a newbee asks which rom should he try, an experienced flasher could point to the most stable rom. One with Sense, one without. This is very valuable information.
Why should EVERYBODY flash 10 roms before he/she finds a stable one?!
When I was flashing roms on my previous winmo phone, I was ALWAYS responding to such questions to my best knowledge.
And, yes, there are many same threads, because MANY people want to know about this and cannot find ANY info.
So, in short, either answer the man or shut up!

I'm using InsertCoin at the moment which is a ported HD ROM and seems really good. If you want to stick with non HD then LeeDroid is great.

He's angry because it's like the 10th time people ask the same (stupid) question over and over again. In the development part you can find plenty of topics about roms. Some of them are stable, some of the are not, you can read it all in their specific thread. Read, read, read, that's all you have to do here. I'm a noob too and I've been reading like 4 weeks here before I decided to flash a certain rom (leedroid), and it works great.
It's a shame that XDA doesn't have a poll similar to the ZTE - which rom poll over at Modaco, a quick look and you can see which are the most popular roms in use at that point in time. http://android.modaco.com/content/z...omisation/329997/poll-what-rom-are-you-using/
The OP asked a question because they probably value advice from the more experienced rom flashers here , those that are willing to give advice will do so. Yes, rom choice is an individual preference but there's really no need for people to reply with derogatory comments, just ignore the thread and leave it to the others that are willing to help.

Read? Did you not READ where i said that the specs mean NOTHING cause i dont exactly understand what im "Getting" in a rom? Im pretty computer literate, and have only had my desire (or android in general), for maybe 3 weeks. This is all new to me. Ive sim unlocked and rooted thus far without confusion or asking for help.
Its just the specs. Theres so much **** in them that i dont understand that its hard to pick one. Intimidating sorta.
Thanks to all that helped. I think im going to try leedroid. Its sense based, which i like over vanilla from what ive seen.
I come from LeeDroid which is an awesome Sense ROM. Currently though I use Redux which is senseless. What can I say, I like it minimalistic. I also prefer to decide myself what apps should be installed on -my- phone.
I wish Lee came out with a clean AOSP build... Or I figured out how to use his kernel and build my own.
Anyway good luck.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I've been using LeeDroid for several months now with no issues at all. If you check his minisite out, he lists all the apps you can safely remove from the zip prior to flashing without damaging it. That way you are only installing the bare minimum required to run a Sense ROM and you then just add the bits you want.
Personally I only run a Sense ROM because I like the HTC dialer, clock and phonebook over the vanilla Android ones. I use launcher pro which just seems to be snappier than Sense with more customising options.

[Q] What happened to Calkulin's, Fresh's and Damage Control's ROM developement

If it starts with [Q], probably goes in Q&A, or ask in their respective threads.
Or you guys could just answer the poor blokes question instead of doing the mods job. Plus this question is asking about the DEVELOPMENT of ROMS. Sounds like the right section to me don't ya think?
Im really not sure why it has been a while since they have had anything new come out, something I have noticed is that unless there is something really worth while they wont update their roms, why fix something that isn't broken?

I agree that people need to be a bit more user friendly around here, no need to get snarky. BUT this is a DEV only section and this type of question (even if it is about DEV work really doesn't belong here).
There is nothing wrong with ONE person trying to help the person but instructing them that this is not the right place for their post. That is not playing the role of a MOD, that is part of being in a community. If this type of thing wasn't a problem the MODS would not have made the 10 post requirement before you can even post here.
Honestly there hasn't been any new developments. In my mind as it stands EVO's are done. Unless Sprint/HTC release something new there is nothing left to develop. The ROMS are zipaligned, PNG Optimized, Battery scripted, etc. I have some work I could do one the graphics but ROM wise I don't see anything earth shattering on the horizon.
Damage Control i believe is dead for now (i haven't seen anything on another phone)
Fresh i believe flipz has just been busy and really his rom is working and works well and there havent been any major ground breaking updates that need to be addressed. since fresh is a non themed rom it is a little harder to constantly provide updates when there isnt much to change in the build itself.
Evio - see fresh for most of it.
A lot of the sense based roms that are updated constantly are themed roms which gives them a lot more to play with. they can tweak the look etc even when there arent any major new developmental releases. I am in no way saying this is all that is done and there is nothing wrong with it being done just explaining my belief on why some roms are updated much more often then others. With the Evo fast approaching the one year mark you will probably see much fewer major updates coming and much fewer major developments.
This is my personal opinion and is not fact. I base my opinions off what i have seen on the devs twitter streams and own sites. hopefully it provides more answers.
When all things sense die, you can always switch to aosp lol. Its updated with the latest and greatest. I prefer sense my self but as zone said; most sense roms are maxed out, there's nothing left to do to them.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
As soon as the System Dump/ROM leaks out for the Evo 3D, they will have something new to play with.
I never understood why people keep asking for updates to stable ROMs that are based on Sprint OTA releases, like Fresh and Myn's Twopointwo. I read both of those threads, and every couple pages, you get people asking about new versions or updates to complete, working, stable ROMs. What do people expect?
If you want new features like Sense 2.0 or Gingerbread, don't flash a ROM that is based on OTA updates.
i agree, i think the sense roms are at a standstill until an official 2.3/sense 2.0 build comes down the pipe from HTC/Sprint. (assuming the Evo gets sense 2.0/android 2.3)
i love calk's work, EViO is a great rom. i only switched because i fell in love with CM7

I Don't know... so far a lot of the [ROMS] that I've seen are just re-skinned versions of everything else out there, shouldn't most of those go in the Themes and Apps section as well, if we are going to try and get technical ?
I wouldn't technically call half of these ROMS true "Development" but merely Themes, which there is another section for as well. But if you want to get technical:

This does not actually lay any guidelines as to what is allowed (actually, this was a rather lazy post in regards to setting guidelines (hey, I can't watch people, I'm a Mod, report them if the entire community comes to a consensus as to what should not be here, we will leave it up to the teeming masses, I mean, it worked well enough for Russia after the bolshevik revolution right? Aren't teeming masses of people able to find out what is in the best interest of everyone else that is not them?), what constitutes strictly development, and what constitutes Q&A if it pertains to Development.
It was a valid question about development. People may or may not upgrade their phones and ditch Evo's based on a developer of ROMS as well.
Don't forget Vaelpak
If like myself, one were to prefer some of the Sense elements over the AOSP versions, but also like the obvious increase in performance that comes from the AOSP's lighter weight, don't forget the latest Vaelpak.
Sense ROM-based, but with most of Sense removed. I get my preferred Sense Dialer, VVM, etc, and thanks to Fancy Widget I get a Sense-like clock with more and better functionality. 4G, HDMI, everything works.
There is no perfect ROM, of course it all comes down to preference and opinion anyway. But if anyone is looking for something unique and extremely functional, this is a very interesting option. I flashed his 3.2 about a week ago just to check it out and have not had a reason to leave it...except to flash to the GB ROMs of course!
As was said above, until official gingerbread is out (which we heard was a yes).....don't worry, there will be continued stuff as most of us got screwed with sprint changing the premium upgrades. 2.2 is maxxed out.
Cooler than your EVO

[Q] What is the dominate rom, most updated or stable?

HTML:
Hello friends,
Just upgraded from the evo 4g through Craigslist & going to get the Evo LTE for my often travels to Texas.
I have done a few hours of reading and one thing I can't grasp is what is the dominate rom for our S2s?
I only really want root for backup & wifi hotspot. I would prefer to make sure I have no issues with gps or Bluetooth as well.
[*]What is the most stable setup?
[*]Most curated or updated lovingly?
[*]Any big drawbacks to your suggestion?
I appreciate the knowledge!
@IdeaJason
Gingerbread or ICS?
This should be posted in Q/A, but, that's irreleavnt...
In my opinion, the most stable ROMs are the stock Samsung builds. Stable is the key word. It (the EL29 Gingerbread ROM) is the most widely-available build, installed on thousands of active devices. If there were problems with it, we'd know/the problems would be out there. This is the "official" ROM for the phone.
There are a lot of ROMs for you to play with. Personally, I love all of Calkulin's ROMs, all extremely speedy and robust. Stable as well.
I currently have the FE07 ICS ROM, but that's because I'm an Android nerd. It has it's bugs, but it's an official Samsung leak.
All in all, just play it safe. Obviously, things like CM9 or Codename Android are still in Alpha builds, so they are not what you're looking for.
Sfhub uploads the One-Click ROM/Modem/Kernel install files - these kick ass. He has them for all builds.
Sorry if this post was a little vague, I'm in a hurry to work.
There's no such thing as a dominant rom for any popular device here on xda, because there are so many awesome developers making stuff for it. Also, development now is strong enough that bluetooth and gps are working on pretty much any rom unless otherwise stated. General rule of thumb to finding popular/updated roms is to look at when the thread for the rom was started, how many views/replies has been made in the thread, and when the rom was last updated. After that, you can determine for yourself.
I agree there is no dominiate rom. Each rom has its selling points. All in All all roms we have are awesome. This kind of thread will only lead to flaming so lets not open that can of worms.

Thanks all for your replies.
I'm not looking to start a flame war at all, just trying to save myself a ton of tinker time before going on a trip.
I have everything rooted from my Viewsonic Gtab to my old EVO and they both had bugs that affected my performance on the road.
I want stable but I also want root backup & hotspot. So I know I can't use the Samsung stuff. I would prefer ICS if it is stable but ginger is fine if it the only option.
I'm just looking for opinions. Even ones that are unpopular if they are worthy.
(Sucks changing phones. I invested so much time learning to root & all the different roms that when you change its like going to a new OS.)
Thanks again all who have & will post.

I have told several people the same thing and like I said I have tried everything, but blazer has all the functionality and no quirks and great battery life that you are looking for. IMO, just from my experience stay away from ICS until source code is released. I am not for sure but it seems like all the devs are just trying to make the most out of a good situation with the leaks right now but once they get something solid they will be able to make ICS just as good as their gingerbread roms. I'm sorry, please excuse me too.
but being newbie does not justify your ignorance. read the forum posts.
EDIT: Check the development section, read the threads

agreed with this one. quick answer from me:for now, none of CM has been perfectly works. all of cm still in alpha version. when it becomes stable, it should be work perfectly. check out this page if you want to read more. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1576874
Thanks to both who answered. I did read the forum posts before asking in here but got lost in the sheet bulk of info here!
That is why I needed to clarify if I understood the prior research correctly.
Am not sure yet if there is any older ROM (CM7) for Galaxy W on which everything works, especially the camera which I use often.
Am hoping for ICS based ROM else a GB version in the meantime ... which I am actually asking about in here.
Thanks.

I know, that bulk of info is actually a history of the development process, If you did read it carefully and slowly, You'll understand every "flaws" on the current CM. Thats what XDA really is, a place to read and learn about Mobile development for those who are not a developer.
CM 7 has a buggy wifi, CM 9 still on alpha, camera buggy. I don't really know as I have never flashed them before, waiting for a stable release as I'm using wifi and camera extensively.

Thanks. Your comments helped a lot cuz i did not manage to figure out that Wifi was buggy in CM7.
I have a question:
Is the CM7 for Galaxy Wonder just Wifi buggy or is it for all the phones e.g. Galaxy S2, etc.??

Other phones with a completed CM7 Development has no major issues on their phone, thus, only the ones with unfinished development still has this bug, maybe other phones also had this issue, I did not know. My friend with LG Optimus P500 has a completed CM7 and it has no major issues, other friend with Galaxy S i9000 has a complete CM7 and no major issues.
If the CM7 for Galaxy Wonder is finished, I'm sure that there will be no major bugs
But as I know, CM7 may be stuck there unless we got a new developer to do it, since the current developer had moved to CM10 after the CM7 Alpha 3

Developer forum is developer forum, they develop, if what they develop is useful to other user, it is a benefit, if not, well it's their gathering place. XDA is not a place to make ROMs,it is a developer forum, so,no need to worry about it. When it (a ROM) is finished, it is finished

i think CM9 from acro is the most powerful and stable, they always provide us with better patch and improvements,
just wait until USB tethering and FM radio working on this ROM, so far, i'm not facing any force close warning with this rom

But I believe that if more developers are working on the same development, the progress may be faster, since they can get some helps rather than doing all by themselves, which is pretty heavy, really thankful to all the developers!

this, only works if there are lots of developer available. Our phone does not have this luxury, so we must do whatever we can to support the development.
IMHO, If we cannot develop, try to reproduce bugs and supply logcats to the devs, if we can't provide logcats, at least don't clutter the development thread with questions. I think it is one way to thank the devs
