I've recently purchased a Nexus 7 (2013) tablet and it turned out to be all faulty - it constantly reboots and the home button doesn't work. Within the next 2 days that I'm staying in the US I have to make a decision whether to return the device to Google (because returning it from my part of the world would cost more than the nexus itself). But prior to that I'd like to update it to see if it fixes the issues. My device's build number is JWR66N but I've heard that the latest build is JSS15R. Going to settings and checking for updates manually doesn't show any OS updates available and the OS says it is up to date. How do I update the device from JWR66N to JSS15R forcibly? Thanks in advance.
Try to clear data of download manager, Google services framework and reboot. Do that 1-3 times and you should get notification about ota.

Thank you, Muikkuman, this helped to detect the update.
I had mine rooted and it prompted an update but when I reboot to install, it brought me to twrp recovery. Any idea how to I bypass that?

Just download the OTA manually, place on your virtual sdcard, and choose install in TWRP.

Not sure what you tried or what problems you ran into.
If you want to force JSS15R onto your tablet I would suggest this:

Try fixing permissions with cwm, if that doesn't work clear the Dalvik cache so Android will rebuild it on boot.

Hello, I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S3 on Android 4.1.2. When I'm in my notifications screen, I can 'expand' my notifications by swiping down with two fingers on the notification. For example, if I received an email, I can see the full mail instead of just the sender in the notification screen.
And now back to the One X:
My friend, owning a HTC One X Android 4.0.3 and not able to upgrade his android, wants to have this too, since then he can view all incoming whatsapp messages without opening whatsapp.
Is there an app to do that? I've been google'ing for 3 hours and still don't have any result :/
Thanks

Expandable Notifications wasn't there when I was using Stock 4.1 (JB)... Only when I installed a custom 4.2.2 ROM, I could use it...
I don't think there's an app available to enable that feature... AFAIK!

He can't update, because after the (OTA) update is downloaded on his phone, it starts installing. But then the installing progress is being aborted suddenly and the phone just reboots.. So we just gave up trying to update and wanted to see if there is another way to get that.

That sounds as though something is stopping the update, was he rooted? Any custom ROM/Recovery etc? EVERYTHING needs to be pure stock for it to update correctly.

Theres your problem mate, an OTA will not work, if you're device isn't fully stock.
It checks your device before updating, the reason it'll reboot and the update won't complete, is because the update is trying to use things that aren't their (Stock recovery etc)
Your best bet, is to find an RUU and run it, so your all stock.
Then OTA until Fully Updated, then do whatever you wish

Good luck mate,
If RUU fails, find a NAND backup from :

Hello guys
Problem is as follows, i'm now seeing the OTA update for my GNexus i9250
when I go to About Device~System Update the phone recognizes the update and downloads it (140Mb approximately), then it asks me to restart to install update, which I do.
Now here's the thing, is that when i do that, i see a recovery screen (i'm sorry for my ignorance here but i've never seen this), and it asks me to pick an option, and install untrusted zip (update.zip), problem is it never installs the update that seems to be located in /sdcard/update.zip (or at least that's what the recovery screen says).
I have to reboot the phone, it works fine, nothing happened here, but I'm not sure what's going on here and wanted to ask to see if any of you has any idea why is it that it doesn't work.
If it helps, the phone is encrypted and has CWM Recovery.

I don't know what's wrong too. Either way, we need to know more to try and help you out. Did you do anything that might alter the system in any way? What ROM/Android version (settings > about > under build number) do you have? What radio (settings > about > under baseband) do you have?
By chance, are you able to get a photo of that screen? What's the other option? If there's one option.. there's normally more.
This information may be helpful

Yes look
When i Restart the phone, it loads in Recovery mode or something, then it gives me an option that says "install untrusted update.zip", so I choose that one, afterwards it says like "cannot mount /sdcard - - Installation aborted".
There are other options to mount /sdcard there as well, but that doesn't work, at all.
The phone is encrypted so I think that may be the reason, It is also Rooted and has an app called "SuperSU"...
I've tried using file managers to access /sdcard to see if there is such file (update.zip) and i can't see anything like that there.

Towelroot only supports kernels that were released before June 3rd, so anything running Android 4.4.3 KitKat that has its stock kernel cannot be rooted by towelroot at this time. Keep checking though, I'm sure it will be available soon.
Alternatively you can go to Root Me and find easy to follow guides for your device there.
Good luck,

I was unaware of that, just quoting what I have read recently, thanks for the information anyway!!!
This worked on my GPE S4. I had upgraded to 4.4.3 with the OTA when it came out a week or two ago and of course I lost root after that upgrade. My laptop's in need of repairs so I haven't been able to re-root. Towelroot fixed that for me.
However, I have tried twice on the Nexus 7 (16gb 2012 Wifi only) after upgrading to 4.4.3 with the OTA and so far that has not worked. Oh well. At least my phone is how I like it again.

I did check root checker and it confirmed I do not have root. I uninstalled the SuperUser app that was already on my N7 (it used to be rooted a while back.. I honestly don't even know how I lost it). Tried running towelroot again. Didn't work.
I noticed that the SU is listed as a system app and I'm wondering if that is causing the problem. I'll need to get a working laptop to do a fresh install and see if I can test towelroot out then.
i have another question , can i have a custom recovery like twrp even my bootloader is unlocked? is twrp manager apk works?

Bootloader can be unlocked once rooted using app from playstore and it doesn't wipe data supposedly.

Root Failure
I had attempted to root my Nexus 7 (2012) 16GB WiFi only running 4.4.3 KitKat with towelroot and it had failed.
All it had done after pushing the "make it ra1n" button was froze the screen, then after a few seconds rebooted. Nothing was wiped in the process and no rooting had occoured.
It was as if nothing had happened because I am writing this reply minutes after my Nexus 7 finished rebooting.

It worked for me however I was already on the 4.4.4 update, not sure that has anyhting to with it but just mentioning it. Did you Download v1 or v2 of towelroot, I think v3 is out now as well.
Here's what I did:
Download the latest version of TR
Install it like you would any other app, it's going to show as a virus or something, just hit ignore or allow
Hit the big Make it rain button, should only take a second or so
Download root checker, should say congrat's
Download chainfires SU from the playstore, it may say something about the SU binaries need updated, just reboot your device and you should be all good.

I upgraded my phone to Android Nougat OTA yesterday. Tried to turn on wifi but nothing happened. I also issued performance dropdown and overheating. I did a factory reset but it didn't fix the problem.
Well sounds like something went wrong. May need to factory reset or load a factory image (once avliable) which would be best.
You can screw around with trying to reflash the OTA package otherwise.

Although some old apps are getting force close frequently, updating them solved it.

Nexus 5X, unrooted, T-Mobile OTA update to Nougat. Tried the following and none resolved the wifi issues:
1. Rebooted phone.
2. Booted into Safe Mode.
3. Wiped cache partition.

5. Reinstalled latest Google Connectivity Services.
6. Reset network settings.
Called Google support and they recommended a factory reset. I haven't tried that because I don't think it will work and I don't want to have to start all over from scratch. Any other suggestions are welcome!
