S4 starts again by emptying battery - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hi,
I have an S4 I9500 since a little more than three months. Only, for one week, it has started to start again and I find myself with a battery with 0%. Sometimes, it starts again and remains blocked on the logo of starting and dies out afterwards considering this “phenomenon” empties the battery at a stretch (moreover I wonder whether it is not a problem of battery). the beug arrives approximately twice a day whereas I surf on Internet or by writing a sms. I reset the telephone yesterday, but without success.
It discharged at a stretch this evening, I reloaded it, and there, fifteen minutes after, while writing a message on facebook, it was to 97%, it started again 69% then died out and I relit it (I had to remove the battery cause it freezed on the logo) to 47%, it started again to 47%, and two min after started again to 0%. It is sooo frustrating.
In the same way, and I do not know if it's linked, but I notice that my battery is emptied more (much more) quickly, at sight of eye.
Now I am on holidays, therefore when it beug, hop I connects it and I wait until it's fully charged, but I hope i could find a solution before the end of my vacancies.
Thank you very much.

Thank you for your answer. Now that you mensionned it, i've just noticed a slight bump on my battery, but frankly i've never paid attention before. And to be honest, I sincerly hope that is just a battery problem and changing it will fix the problem.
I don't want to be silly but i'd like to understand if the bump is the problem what might have caused it? Can it just happen? The protection case might be the problem? I use a Muvit Case Slim valve for Samsung Galaxy S4 (with magnet)
Thank you

i dont know what caused it but i compared the broken battery to the new one and there was a big difference, the battery cover was being pushed out on the mytouch

Could just be a defective battery from manufacturing process. Something is causing it to overheat and expand.

Hi guys,
So, I went to the store today, the guy told me that it was a battery problem, there was a bump on it, he said that it was due to an overcharge. I found that bizarre, considering that on forums they advise to charge the battery for 12h the first use.
Thank's for your help, and can you tell me how to calibrate my new battery in order to avoid future problems.

Could have been just a bad battery, nothing really that you did, who knows.
And 12 hours? Hm.. sounds a bit extreme, I usually just top my battery off and I'm set. :|

There are some apps in the playstore that will do it.
Such as, Rom Toolbox.
Also, some of the custom roms like Wicked come with the option.

Youre talking about a fast , usb charge mode that increases current drain on a usb source above 500mA.
Wall wart charge can go to 2000mA.
Fast charge option doesnt affect wall charging. Dont see that option in wicked v6.
That wont cause the OP's problem, which is simply a defective battery.

Hot swapping batteries

I noticed that the GN works with the charger plugged in and the battery out, unlike other Androids I've owned. The OS freezes after anywhere from 1-60 seconds, but it does work. So then after another reboot I tried plugging in the charger and quickly replacing the 54% charged battery with a fully charged one. Took out the charger again - no freezes at all. But the battery meter still "remembers" the charge state of the old battery.
So is this behaviour by design - Google and Samsung decided it's time to let this happen? - or is it merely an oversight since it confuses the OS?
If I'm in a situation where I'd like to use this trick to hot swap a depleted battery without shutting down, would there be any potential harm? I'm guessing it could bork the battery calibration.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
It wouldn't effect Android, it would effect the battery itself. Battery calibration only happens on the battery itself, Android "battery calibration" that everyone talks about is just the battery stats page that tells you what apps are using what. The battery has a little chip on it that tells it when there isn't enough power/voltage to run.

That's a good question. I rarely do this and I think because of clearing out the phone often while swapping software I don't get any potential side effects.
Read the user manual, it specifically states not to do this.
Like all things, no one can stop you from doing it, doesn't mean that it isn't a silly idea.

That leads me to a good question - where is the full user manual for the GSM version, not just the quick start guide? Google doesn't even have it available on their site. Nor does Samsung Canada.
But I did catch the language you were referring to: "Do not remove the battery before removing the
travel adapter. Doing this may cause damage to the device."
Heh okay, oops
I'd say it's a terrible idea to even try to do this.
If your device writes to the internal flash memory just when the power runs out you may end up with a broken file system or even damaged flash cells.
Don't do it.

But isn't that no worse than doing an occasionally necessary battery pull?
In any case I wasn't describing the power running out at all - this is changing batteries while the phone is on AC power. Laptops have been able to do this safely since forever... Old dumb phones were often able to do it too. This is my first Android on which this actually works - but, true, the manual does advise against.

I guess I'm just going to avoid the unnecessary risk. I don't think a 3 minute restart is worth the inconvenience of replacing a phone. Or worse, it running buggy and not knowing why.

Btw, I have a surge protector with battery back up (Tampa thunderstorms can be a *****) and usually run my laptop battery less. It's better for the battery life but if I didn't have the back up battery, it could cause some headaches if the power blacks out.

Depends, I guess. If the phone has crashed and is in some endless loop doing nothing really, there should be no additional harm from the battery pull.
If only the UI froze but the "core" OS is still working in the background and updating the file system just in the moment you pull the battery .. well, that's really bad luck. :-/
Why don't we have external batteries like on cordless drills? Well Palm Pre and some others have it...
Probably a hack here somewhere to manually set the battery level and avoid that risk of getting a crucial customer call in that 3min reboot, no?

You answered your question, the battery pull for the freezing is unavoidable. You need to pull the battery.

Charging paused. Battery temperature too high...?!

Hey there,
This issue started yesterday...I went to plug my S3 (SGH-T999V from Videotron) into the 5V charger and I go this message "Charging paused. Battery temperature too high.". I was like...uh..say what? I hadn't used it for anything else but watching a video (not even HD). After fiddling around unplugging and plugging back it finally charged.
But tonight, same thing, except it just won't let me charge! SetCPU showed battery temp at 80 degrees C (176F)!!! Mind you, I have the phone in a big case (Trident Kraken) but still, I removed the case and opened up the phone's back and it wasn't hot at all!!!
I waited an hour and then tried again. After a minute, same thing. Checked the temp, it was a 51.9C. I left the back opened and touched the battery, everywhere but especially near the contacts and it was fine...not hot at all!
I have stock ROM, stock kernel, but rooted. Of course, no overclock. I merely use SetCPU to put a clock speed limiter while the screen is off.
Anybody here has a clue about what could be going on?!?
Thanks!
At this point I'd say it could be one of two things. Software got corrupted and a factory reset will fix it, or the temperature sensor went bad and it's replacement time.
I'd try the reset and see how it fares. Typically this fixes 90% of problems (as ironic as that is, because we all flamed customer support at one time or another because that was their answer to every problem. And usually still is lol)

That's pretty much what I thought...
For the record I had tried a simple powercycle and it had no effect. However, I powered the phone off for an hour and just rebooted it and now it charges fine...go figure. I guess if it keeps happening I'll do a factory reset but that sucks as I would have about 60 apps to reinstall. I guess I could use Titanium Backup but then again wouldn't it backup the possible crap that's causing this issue? What about purging the dalvik cache perhaps?
Damn it. As I was typing this (after an increase of 4% in battery charge) it did it again...!!!
I just thought of another possibility or two
Bad charger.. or bad battery
Both can cause this I'm sure. Maybe even more likely. The battery could be bad, maybe the sensor is inside it. Sounds logical to me

I had turned the phone off after my last post and just turned it on to try charging via PC USB. Well, only a minute battery temp is at 60.3C (140.5F)! So I'm ruling the charger out.
As for the battery...well, I don't know if the sensor is inside or if it's inside the phone and just interprets data sent by the battery itself. It might as well be in the battery if the NFC chip is inside...
Anybody would know if wiping the dalvik cache could potentially help with this issue?
Never hurts to try!

this would be my guess
Well I went to a Videotron store and discussed with one of the agents there about the tests that were done, etc. I quickly gained his trust as, ahem, I actually work for the company as a commercial tech support agent...
I asked him to pull out the battery from his floor demo, which he reluctantly agreed to after asking the manager and we proceeded to test the other battery. Well, guess what? Same issue. Now, as per company policy I had to do a factory reset; tried again after that and again, guess what?
Issue persists.
So we proceeded to exchange the phone.
Neither I or him or the manager ever encountered this issue with any customer...I've googled this and looked all over XDA and never found any reference to a faulty battery sensor...!
One thing's for sure, the sensor is NOT located on the battery itself. By elimination, it's on the phone itself.
Wow that is crazy man. Glad you got it resolved! Least we know if someone else has a similar issue it may be replacement time.
Sent from a galaxy far away!
I'm going through this same exact issue right now. Bought a new battery and the problem is still there.
At the store you used a different charger/cable right? Have you tried completely wiping the phone? Which root method did you use?
Oh and THANK YOU for being detailed about the ROM, kernel, etc. It's impossible to help someone without knowing everything.
Went to the AT&T store and the problem was reproduced with no problem. They then directed me across the street to the service department. Went there and the lady couldn't reproduce the problem at all with the battery they had on hand. So now I'm being sent a new battery by mail to try out before replacing the phone. Hopefully a new OEM battery will cure my issue, but I'm not holding my breath. Thankfully the replacement battery I bought off Amazon came with a charger so I can charge and then swap batteries as needed until the OEM one arrives.
Wow this is interesting, as it is only the second case (mine included) that I'm aware of. And I had searched ALOT...!
Can you confirm that you have a T999 or T999V and if you were able to use any app that gives you actual temperature readings (such as setcpu for example)? If yes, what temperatures were you getting?
The battery sensor seems to be in the phone itself so unfortunately you'll have to get a replacement. Factory resetting the phone will have no effect.

hi, i have samsung tab p3100 , its says battery temperature too high ,what will be the solution ?
I'm on my second battery now, first warped and died.
I'm now getting the battery temp too high issue, even though the phone seems cool to the touch.
I'm bypassing it by *charging my phone in the freezer*.
Not ideal, but I suspect it's a phone issue and not a battery issue as I tried a 3rd battery I had access to it it still happened.

[Q] Random power off issue

my epic 4g touch was on the cyanogenmod 10.1 wild for the night rom v. jan23v2. every time, if my phone were off a charger for 5-10 minutes the screen would flash to different brightness levels then turn off. it would do this every time since that rom. in order to fix the issue, i tried using sfhub's el29 root to go back to stock to try flashing the same updated rom. i was on el29 rooted and the issue still occured. i would have to plug it in for it to turn on again. is this a battery issue or is it something else? my battery is over a year old. any help would be appreciated. if you need more info, just ask

Amazon will have OEM batteries. Be careful though, some will label them like OEM but they are fake. You will probably be able to get a new one from Sprint or Samsung, though.

I've had good luck with cheap eBay ones for $3-$5. (~$10 for 2 + external charger, shipped from China)
Originally bought a cheap 1800mAh for my Epic, but kept it around and am using in my E4GT (when the orinal battery "puffed" and wouldn't hold much of a charge) Recently added a "2200mAh" one and external charger. It's a tiny bit thicker than my 1800, but still fits under the stock cover. I havent noticed the "2200" giving any better battery life than the "1800" - both work well and I've had no problems.
This issue is happening to me too but seems to occur when I'm downloading something like an MMS or app, or even an image intensive webpage. The screen flashes to different brightness levels and then the battery would suddenly "drain" to zero, where the software tells me it's at zero, but with a little extra charge and a reboot, the power level will be where it was before shutting down.
And none of this occurs while plugged in so I'm reasonably sure it's an old battery, I'd just like some confirmation. What gave it away though? The flashing screen thing had preceded a loss of signal so at first (and for about a week or so) I thought that was what it was until I found this thread.

When I went to get a new battery, the guy pulled the battery out and spun it on the counter. If it spins, it's expanded, and indicative of being on its last leg or already dead. Of course, you could also palpate the battery and you will feel the bulge but the spin test is simpler, definitive, and more entertaining. Just posting in case someone else runs into this problem or a similar battery problem and come across this thread - try the battery spin test.

[Q]

I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 and for some reason, the battery is draining fast at times and I have no clue why. Could it be a software issue? Lockscreen Issue? Whenever I have my phone hooked up and charging, sometimes it profusely keeps charging then stops charging and vibrating thousands of times. I'm thinking about doing a factory reset, any app that can backup all of my data to an SD card?
The only apps I'm using are facebook, chomp sms, magiclocker(theme), music, simple notepad, juice defender, kik, and magicjack.
This started happeneing about 3 days ago and its frustrating me when my phones dead and I have to call someone.
Please help,
Thanks

Yes. This. I've asked mods to move it seeing as nobody else did.
You also mentioned that your battery is losing charge quickly, pull it out and try spinning it on a flat surface.
If it spins, then the battery may be going bad. There are a few options at this point, but I'd recommend ordering a new battery that has a larger capacity. There are several available on both Amazon and eBay.
I purchased a 3800 mAh battery with back plate for less than twenty bucks and my phone now lasts all day with heavy use. On top of that, I don't have to charge it as often, so there is less risk to my charging port.
Good luck!

I also have experienced odd behavior with my Verizon note 4. My battery does the similar rapid percentage drop once it hits 20%. It will power off completely, I plug in my charger for literally 5 minutes (I had my daughter time this more than once), then power it on and it says my battery is above 50%. I always close down apps when I'm done with them, even checking my task manager often. Since the Verizon variant has yet to gain permanent root, I have nothing special installed that I feel would affect it. Just a few zynga games, Facebook, and instagram. I have no clue what's going on. But it's less discerning knowing I'm not the only one having this issue.

The battery percentage displayed is an estimate made based on a calculation of several voltmeter reading. I suspect the low battery warning actually consume energy and causes a spike voltage drop. The Battery may actually last longer if we were to turn off the low battery warning. You could just ignore the problem, raise the percentage level of the warning or just change or charge the battery before it happens.
So I started experiencing this a little while back.
Mine shutsdown @ ~5-13% and then proceeds to restart.
I finally bit the bullet and went into the verizon store yesterday. The guy helping me was nice, I told him I had already factory reset my device since this issue started and asked if it may be something a battery swap would help. He assured me that it most likely wasnt the battery and I should be getting my free replacement today in the mail!
Hope this helps someone file for warranty before their year is up!

My note used to turn off without warning around 20%. At first I thought it's software issue after hotfix, then I started to think it was the battery, then I realised I've had this issue on my htc desire years ago... I've fixed it like that time -I've put a small pice of paper between the bottom of battery to make it press a better to the contacts and all issues are gone (I've drain the battery to 4% to test it)...
The battery is 100% to blame. I've had this happen to me and several friends who bought the Note 4 when it first came out. I bought a new stock battery and external charger and my phone lives all the way to 1%. When I use my original battery, it will die anywhere from 15-40% depending how hard its working.
