hi im a noob when it comes to phones, normally ill take it to a shop who will find one and install it for me, but i feel like trying this myself
are firmware in general like OSs? are kernels included as well or do i have to look for them? can I use any of them from any country? i dont mind resetting internet/MMS since theyre easy. im talking in computer terms to show how noobish i am
since i cant ask questions on the 'minimal by Judas' thread ill ask it here. is the 1.6 download a full OS with hardware stuff included or is it like a patch where i have to install that on top of an already working MG2? im interested in the zero patch since it removes most bloats, is it another OS or a patch on top of the minimal?
if it isnt too troublesome could someone write up a small walkthrough on using the aroma installer?
if you are alredy on MG2, you should have a working kernel for the minimalzero rom. alternatively you can use D-kernel.
as for the firmware itself, it's like an os. the package is a full rom (system installation, so installing it will first wipe your current system and then recreate it from scratch.
stuff like wifi passes and mms are on data tho, so u will keep that
for aosp based roms tho, the kernel needed will be included in the package, and a data wipe is required as well.
Flashing anything should be done by first flashing a temporary CWM via the stock recovery (look for temporary CWM by shaan in the development section) and then flashing zips from the temporary cwm once itl oads.
im still using stock 2.3.6 that came with the phone, would i need to install another firmware before hand?
and could i have some help finding an older version of CWM? weird thing is i rooted my phone but CWM is still not onstalled. ive reset my phone a lot, installed a few XXLD8 with CWM, tried to onstall standalone CWMs but none of them seem to work (failed to verofy whole package thing), tried via rom manager and it gives me the 'failed to verify whole package' thing.l
i even read a tutorial on that but its still not getting me through it

what are the requirements for minimal/zero? im following the 'all galaxy ace 2 jelly bean firmwares' and the newest reply i saw was a person who downloaded an MF2 but requiring an MF1. seeing how zero has an MG1 CSC version and mininal has an MG2 does that mean zero is a requirement of minimal or are they both standalones? i also read elsewhere that in order to install an MG youd have ti install earlier firmwares, is that true?

You can flash MB4 then MG2 to ensure 624mb ram, if you flash mg2 only most like get only 482mb ram. Follow guide to get 624mb ram on any jb rom if you have only 482mb ram after flashing your desired fw.(mc8,mg2 etc). Minimal 1.6 and minimal zero are standalone roms.
EDIT: CSC does not really matter unless you want to update through kies (what for? Use odin) and you dont need to flash another firmware just for mg2.

theoretically if i wanted to skip downloading other firmwares, what files for the MG2 would i have to install manually? even without a complete MG2 i could still get in to download/recovery to install them? ive so far found kernels and the 628MB (from szabys signature), would those be enough?
if i wanted to go down this road that means installing the OS first then the others right, will the order count?

about the different CSC versions, i thought other settings would be affected as well, so its just update over kies right
Just find any fw you like (i use mg2, but may not be best either, your choice ) then flash with odin under PDA(remember to extract the .zip to obtain the .md5) different csc dont seem to do any harm for me and i dont think it should
EDIT: you must wait for the whole flashing process in odin to finish(although i have no idea what happens if you dont). Once its booted you can just head to recovery and update to temp CWM then follow instructions to flash minimal

flashing on top works fine
dont know why i waited almost a year to root but honestly CM10.1 handles like GB (both using under 200MB, whereas 412/zero uses 300, all debloated)
but there are 2 problems i cant solve, it turns on when charging and 'package access helper/fused location' always running, other than those awesome mod

I own a Samsung Galaxy Gio GT-S5660M With Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread that I got from Bell Aliant Along With a Motorola Xoom Wifi Canadian That I bought at Wal-Mart one day.
I am intrested in flashing Custom Roms onto My Samsung Galaxy Gio Gt-S5660M. I have Rooted and Installed ClockworkMod on my Samsung Galaxy Gio Gt-S5660M. I have recently been looking up stuff on how to install them onto my Samsung Galaxy Gio Gt-S5660M. I recently attempted to install Android 4.0.3 Ice cream Sandwich onto it. and I realized that I installed the wrong one because it was for the S5660M Model Not the GT-S5660M, Resulting into a boot failure. as the screen would fade out to black when booting to the Operating System. I was still able to access the Recovery mode (I never Had ClockworkMod Installed at that time) and the Custom ROM Download mode (Vol Down + Home + Power button) but it would fail to connect to my PC (Windows 7 Home Premium & Ubuntu Linux 64-bit) So Later on I told my dad about it and he sent it to bell Aliant to get it fixed. And now I would like to know how I can install a custom ROM and If I ever come across this problem again, how can i solve it without taking it to Bell Aliant to get fixed (Since it's a software related issue)

When you flash a rom it is very important to do a backup before hand. You sound like your new to this so your in the right place. Whenever you do a back up and you run into a problem like the one you ran in to, it's very simple to restore back to its original state. Also, most companies won't cover software issues once they figure out your rooted. So you might run in to a problem with your company. My advice is to read read read read and ask as many questions as possible before doing anything to your phone you aren't sure about.

Some more things, it is very useful for you to download ROM MANAGER and TITANIUM BACKUP from the app store. These two apps are life savers when you run in to the problem you had. Also read on how to use clock work mod recovery. Try to get very acquainted with that program as it will be ure main life saver in any situation.

hold the power button, the volume down button, and the HOME button at the same time, when the phone is off. then use a tutorial on how to flash roms with ODIN, download a rom from sammobile.com

After the installation is finished, you need to do a factory reset, then reboot.
Otherwise you cant boot.
And for cm9 it may be required to have atleast a gingerbrea2.3.x rom

I have Android 2.3.4 on it will that work?
Also how can I backup my Stock rom on it as well.
I noticed a backup and restore option in Clockworkmod as well (I have Version 5.0.2.6) Will that work incase I mess up again?
First of all, do not use ROM Manager to install CWM, you will brick the device doing so.
The nandroid backup function in CWM should work, but having a working Odin install with your Odin-flashable stock ROM backup is always a nice plus.
While I don't have one personally, there have been reports on here of the same USB jig (a micro USB connector with the appropriate resistor between pins 4 and 5) used on the Galaxy S Vibrant working on the Gio as well. This is if it doesn't want to go into download mode anymore.
These are a few gotchas with flashing ROMs on the Gio I can think of right now:
-Don't flash the Euro baseband on the 5660M and vice versa. (The AMSS image in Odin tar files)
-Be sure to have your partitions in the appropriate file system format, and CWM to go with it. I'm talking about ext4 and Samsung's stock, and proprietary RFS format.

I am not going to use ROM Manager to begin with. as my device is not listed.
I used the recovery to install Clockworkmod (CWM)
Also I noticed that some ROMs are strictly for S5660M Not the GT-S5660M.
If I want to Install a Rom That For the GT-S5660 Does it Matter if it has the "M" in the name of my model? as in GT-S5660M
Also is it possible to flash zip files with odin?
Or has the ROM only have to be in tar format?
One last thing

1 .zip files that you flash via recovery can be flashed easily, thats fine
Just watch out with odin roms like gioprio, they contain a baseband and you will have no service, but can easily be solved by flashing a m model baseband

There is a compiled list of all ROMs for the 5660 and 5660m Gio in the development area.
the Stock Rom for 5660M (The GT is nothing to worry about) is this link

You can absolutely use a rom that is s5560, but note:
If you are selecting a Rom that is flashed using odin, always open the .tar using winzip or 7zip and just check for a file called amss ... this is the broadband file which would cause you to lose your phone signal. if you want to use the ROM, remove that amss file.
is you are flashing a rom through clockwordmod, these don't change the broadband.
so you can freely use any of those ones, such as cm7, 7.1, 7.2 9 or other based on stock roms.
Cyanogenmod (cm) requires the internal file system to be ext4, where as most Rom based on stock can use either rfs (stock file system) or some do support ext4 internal for a bit of increased speed.

About this Ext4formatter.zip that voetbalremco mentioned, where can I get it to, would I do this before installing the rom or after installing the ROM?
I know that I need to wipe cache partition, factory reset, and wipe Dalvik cache.
Would I do all of this first or after installation?
Like I said earlier I'm sorry for asking a lot of questions, I just need to most information I can get. lol

You use it before installing, same thing with the wipes.
By the way, this ext4formatter is a one time event.
Once it is done, its done.
The wiping is every time before you install a different rom.

If I ever want to upgrade from CyanogenMod 7.2 to CyanogenMod 9, How would I do it?
When the update file downloads then it verifies but when it goes to install, it errors out and stops [see attached image]. There is also mention of Gmail.apk but when I go and look for it, it's not there. I have deleted the file and downloaded several time but wind up with the same result. I have put a copy in the ext sd card and tried from there but it will not install. Any ideas on how to do the upgrade?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like you're trying to do an ota when you're rooted (with a custom recovery). This won't work. Please read through this thread by CNexus about otas:

Wow! I went through over 30 pages looking for a step by step and am quite confused as to the proper process. I am currently on 4.1.1 with LJ7 and have downloaded MD4 both DeOdex and Odex plus the MD4 kernal. The only thing I did when I got the phone was root it enough to make the hot spot app work.

Thanks for reading all of it. Most people would just look at the first page and the last page and say "Oh, it's not there!" That being said, I hope you have a better understanding of what's going on when you get an OTA notification.
Now that's been said, I had written a post on another thread that covers the steps A-Z. I've linked it and quoted it below.
Ok, let's start at the very beginning (it's a very good place to start).
Before we get started, I'm going to make the following assumptions:
You successfully rooted your phone through Odin.
You currently have a custom recovery (either TWRP or CWM).
You have a Rom you'd like to flash on either your internal storage or your SDcard (I'd recommend the SDcard, but that's your prerogative).
If either of the first two is not true, I'd recommend going back to qbking77's thread and check out the videos on how to use Odin to gain root and a custom recovery.
If number 3 above is not true, download a ROM (nor someone new to flashing/custom Roms, I'd recommend Freeza's stock rooted Rom, as it's identical to stock TW, but just with Root). Once you download a Rom, check it's md5sum to verify that it's a good download. Copy the file to your SD card and get ready to flash (make sure you have decent battery life left, I try to keep at least 50% or more when flashing Roms, although it shouldn't take too long.
I'll give directions on how to flash a Rom below. The instructions will be for TWRP, but CWM has similar options/settings
Turn your phone completely off (hold down power for 3-5 seconds)
Boot your phone into recovery. Hold Up, Menu, and Power for a few seconds (until SAMSUNG appears on your screen and the phone vibrates)
Make a Nandroid backup. I can't emphasize this enough. In flashing, it's almost a certainty that one time, something will mess up. When that happens, you want to be able to restore a backup. In TWRP, just go into Backup Menu and choose where you want it (internal vs. External storage). It takes my phone a few (5-10) minutes to completely backup my data.
In TWRP, click the wipe button, then system. This will completely wipe the Rom from your phone. Doing this will allow you to get a "clean" install, without any settings or leftover files from your old Rom getting in the way. Instead, you could only wipe data (factory reset), which is good enough for most Roms. I'd still recommend a system wipe, though.
Also while in the Wipe menu, wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache.
Go back to the TWRP main menu.
Click Install, then find your Rom zip file (may have to switch from internal to external storage).
Let TWRP do it's thing.
If you're installing a TW-based Rom, it should have gapps already installed. If not, you should now flash the correct gapps package from goo.im. Make sure you're flashing the correct one, as if you don't, your google apps will force close upon use.
Reboot into system and give it time to boot (first boot sometimes takes a couple of minutes).
Set up your phone the way you like.
These should be the directions to follow whenever you flash a new Rom. Some Roms have the Aroma installer, so you'll have more options once you choose to flash the Rom zip, but those are typically easy to follow (and vary from Rom to Rom, so I won't be able to give you a good guide on that).

As a noob, I was scared to death knowing that I was rooted and I was going to get an OTA!

BTW, I flashed freeza's md4 odexd rom (cause a stock sg is odex), the md4 firmware, and the optimized kernel. Flashed (installed) them in that order. Just download them from the site onto your phone, and boot into recovery to flash each. Probably too paranoid, but i rebooted after each flash *just* to be sure). Cleared dalvik cache after installing the rom. Ummm, and ran checksum on my files before I installed them (I use md5 checker app).
Thanks, that got me started. now I have to figure out which rom and kernal I want to install.
ROMs come with kernels already, so if you're unsure ATM, just flash a ROM and then later you can check out kernel switching. Just make sure that the kernel you are flashing is for your ROM version (4.1.2, 4.2.2, etc) and for your type (AOSP, Touchwiz).
Since you are just starting out, I would suggest TPR (The Peoples ROM) or MOAR (Mother of All ROMs). Both in Android Dev section (as opposed to Original Android Dev).
TPR also has AROMA installer, so it lets you pick what apps, kernel, and other goodies you want to flash and basically on-the-spot customization.
Downloaded the file MD4_update_FULL_Odex.zip and followed the instructions above and got zip signature failure, see photo. I am wondering if it worth doing the upgrade.

In twrp, under settings, you can uncheck the zip file verification option. Most of the time it gives you that error, even though the zip is fine.

Baseband has to do with what modem/radio you are on. This is independent of your ROM, so the two can be different version numbers.
The modem impacts your mobile data coverage and speeds. What you wanna do (if you wanna find the best modem for your area) is to switch modems and run each one for a week. Then switch. After you've gone through a couple modems, single out the ones that qork best and test those out till hou find the best and/or fastest one for your area and the places you frequent.

go back to recovery, format/wipe /system partition, reflash rom.
For your reference, a good app to install bb is stephen (stericsson)'s busybox installer (play store link). Obviously, it needs root.

How do I get “root”?
If you are booted into a custom recovery (recoveries will be covered later), root is enabled by default. If you want root while booted into Android, you will need to place two files on your system partition: an “su” binary which grants root access, and a superuser app that manages that access. The two that are available are ChainsDD’s Superuser and Chainfire’s SuperSU. So, what you're saying is that I should boot into fastboot mode, wipe system partition (this will format the whole SD card right?), install the same ROM again?
I guess I'll need to install Titanium Backup to backup my apps and settings, I'll have to search for an article for the best way to do it as well..
Can I do it like this:
Open "Rom Manager", Select "Install ROM from SD Card", install it.. ???
PS: Do you have a recommendation for a better ROM, perhaps my choice of ROM wasn't correct...

You can wipe the system partition in a custom recovery (dont know if you can with stock). And yes you could flash via ROM manager but I wouldnt recommend it. I am on XenonHD 11.1 and loving it. But roms are a personal choice so there is no 'best' ROM. Just try out.

The tutorial I followed didn't mention using the ROM manager, but I had not choice.. becuase whenever I went into fastboot mode manually, it got stuck on the screen displaying Google (I waited for minutes without any luck)
How would you recommend CyanogenMod 10.1.2 against the stock 4.2.2 which I have currently?
I read these threads as well whereby they said that there is no "real" solution to the issues:

If you read it, you'll stop thinking you need to be doing anything at this point in FASTBOOT interface! Like mrgnex says, you need to be on a custom recovery to format /system. (Have you read the link yet? By now you should know that the /system partition and the /sdcard/ (aka userdata) are 2 different things!)

So to get things clear:
No fastboot and recovery arent the same thing.
Vol up+down+power brings you into fast boot and not recovery.
Apparently you dont have 2 custom recoverys since you booted into cwm.
Cm10 is great. But there are many great roms out there. You can start off with cm and then (if you please) look further.
I dont see any reason to not install cm10.1.2 since a whole team built and optimized it. So basically it is a better stock.
When you think your phone is slow you should look into the custom kernels. Thats a different story which I will not begin before you want to

I wanted to know one more thing, Is it bad to flash ROMs to your phone every now and then?
Because I've seen people flashing different ROMs on their phone, I don't wanna damage my phone as I want it to last as long as I can make it.
(by "Bad" I mean... does it reduce the phone's life or it's hardware's life span)

No it can't. I was a flashaholic (until I discovered XenonHD) and my phone didn't got worse. Only overclocking the CPU and gpu can affect the life of the CPU or gpu (or both XD). Just do a fresh install everytime and read the post of the ROM of your choice to see what to do to get it working optimally. If you have any problems just ask.

So... since 4.3 is now out, I was thinking it'd be better for me to flash it other than anything else.

I apologize guys... I guess I wasn't thinking straight as its past midnight here...
So just to clarify stuff so that I don't end up doing something wrong:
-> Head into Recovery Mode (with usb debugging enabled... connect usb cable to phone and pc)
-> Wipe System
-> Wipe Cache
-> Install from SD card (select .zip file)
right?
Also, I performed a backup of the applications I have via Titanium Backup, They'll work on 4.3 when I restore them right? or do you recommend downloading them from the play store again?

the google stock package is NOT flashable in CWM/TWRP
if you follow the GOOGLE instructions it WILL wipe your device (remember that backup you made of everything?)
alternatively you can make sure and have adb/fastboot working on your computer properly, extract all the files out of the zip (including the tar.gz located inside), and in recovery, do a factory reset, then boot to fastboot, fastboot flash system and boot ....
as for Titanium Backup, there is a work around to get it working on 4.3, but root is lacking full power.

I read online somewhere that I need to root again, but I don't wanna lose all my data/ apps I installed again...

I'm sooooo tired. I have a couple of Sprint D700 phones that I am trying to customize and I'm stuck. I've been reading forums and Googling for hours over several days and weeks and I just can't seem to get to the next step. FYI, I'm a software developer by trade, so I'm frustrated that I cannot figure this out.
I'm trying this on a guinea pig phone first (not currently active on an account). So, it has all of the latest Sprint upgrades. Then, I did a factory reset. I was able to gain root access using Framaroot 1.6.1. Then, I downloaded Root Explorer, Terminal Emulator and ROM Manager.
I want to experiment with some Custom ROMs, but everything I do so far is blocked by the existing stock recovery (3e?). From what I've read, I need CWM 5.0.2.7. So, I tried to load that version of CWM via ROM Manager. However, it will not boot to CWM - it keeps going into stock.
Then, I recently read something that the Samsung phones need an updated Kernel in order for the CWM install to work? And if I understand correctly, the only way to do that is via ODIN (which I've also downloaded on my PC)? Or is there a version of recovery manager that has a digital signature that will pass the check by the stock recovery and let it install?
I've tried to find some versions of Kernels and really don't know what to try - a lot of the download links are dead.
I want to hang on to these phones a little longer because I like the size and the qwerty keyboard, so I've refused to give up so far.
I realize that the answers are somewhere in these threads, but I am having trouble sifting through information that is sometimes outdated or has dead links to files. Please help - what do I need to do next?

My current build is GINGERBREAD.FC09, Firmware 2.3.6.
What Kernel do I need to flash?

Success - Finally got CWM - Ready to play with ROMs
OK, I finally got to where I needed to be. I'm not sure if I'd ODIN'd incorrectly or what. However, I did a factory reset from the stock recovery. Then, I tried ODIN with Shadow again. This time I did it with ODIN 3.07 instead of 3.09. I don't know if I did something wrong with the 3.09 version - the button names were abbreviated - maybe I hit the wrong selection for "PDA".
This time it booted right into CWM 5.0.2.7. Geez, I'm supposed to be smarter than this.
If anyone is starting this fresh and has this phone with all of the latest OTA updates (no root - stock everything), then I think this is the path to take. For those of you that have read my rantings, thank you for your time. Any comments (including humor at my expense) will be joyfully appreciated.

Steps to Root FC09
Odin v3.09 doesn't work that well with the D700, as that version no longer has the "PDA" field. Version 3.07 and lower work fine.
Flashing a kernel will not also flash a recovery; unless the kernel dev packaged CWM or TWRP in his zip file. The kernel thread will state if it comes packaged with a recovery.
Typically, all custom roms for the Epic are pre-rooted. So you would only have to download Superuser or SuperSU from the Play store to keep it updated.

Thanks for that addtional info. I will get rid of my version of ODIN 3.09.
So... I am doing all of this on a "practice" phone - one that is spare and not currently connected to Sprint. It appears that what I did may have wiped the /EFS folder and no, I don't think I backed it up. I didn't back up anything on this phone because it was just a practice phone (the kind of mistake you only make once). So, my phone does not display an IMEI (MEID).
Do you think that restoring a stock image and starting over will help me restore my NV_DATA.BIN info? I have another one of these phones (currently active), but I'm guessing that I cannot just steal the NV_DATA.BIN file from that phone and edit the contents to change the IMEI and MAC Address, etc. That would be too easy.
Is there any way to do a new gen of the NV_DATA info? I will try ODIN back to stock tonight when I'm home, but in the mean time if anyone has any suggestions let me know.
This is quite a learning process. I'm getting much more familiar with how these things work now, so that can only be good.

New issues - need help with CM 10.1...
OK, I've made progress and learned a lot. Essentially restored the bricked phone by going back to stock. Then, I started my process again.
- Used ODIN to flash rooted kernel with CM 5.0.2.7
- Flashed Cyanogenmod 10.1.3
- Flashed correct Gapps (dated 8/12 I think)
Software great, but modem not working. So, then I found the forum for the NS4G modem patches. I've tried several and I did get one to work. But, the latest version of CM 10.1 has SU built-in. When I do the modem repair, it breaks my SU root.
I've tried the nitest kernal (by the way, I like the TWRP recovery better than CM - it). I've tried several of the modem patches.
Do I need to go back to a certain stable version of CM 10? What order to I need to apply things?
Here's what I have on the phone at the moment. It has SU/root but no modem.
- Android 4.2.2
- 3.0.79-JB42-nitest-nr kernel
- CM 10.1-20130526-NIGHTLY-epicmtd (although I've tried several other builds)
I was sooooooo close. Please help? How do I get my modem working AND keep my SU/root?

So... I am doing all of this on a "practice" phone - one that is spare and not currently connected to Sprint. It appears that what I did may have wiped the /EFS folder and no, I don't think I backed it up. I didn't back up anything on this phone because it was just a practice phone (the kind of mistake you only make once). So, my phone does not display an IMEI (MEID).
Do you think that restoring a stock image and starting over will help me restore my NV_DATA.BIN info? I have another one of these phones (currently active), but I'm guessing that I cannot just steal the NV_DATA.BIN file from that phone and edit the contents to change the IMEI and MAC Address, etc. That would be too easy.
Is there any way to do a new gen of the NV_DATA info? I will try ODIN back to stock tonight when I'm home, but in the mean time if anyone has any suggestions let me know.
This is quite a learning process. I'm getting much more familiar with how these things work now, so that can only be good.

ROM is not dependent on modem. Modem is dependent on kernel patches though.
Be sure you have a compatible kernel for your modem, whether NS4G or Epic modem. Are you using Odin or recovery to flash your modem? I've read in the NS4G modem thread a while ago, that users had to flash the modem multiple times to get it to stick. I'd suggest keep flashing and checking.
Here is SuperSU v1.69 download link. Place on SD card and flash in recovery once you get modem working.

Thanks for the response. Am I wrong, or are there kernel patches that are part of the CM 10.1 install? So, I do understand what you are saying - that the ROM itself shouldn't break the modem. However, I believe there were some kernel patches in the CM install - maybe I'm totally wrong?
When I did have one of the modem patches working, I tried to separately download SuperSU, but it didn't seem to work. I really liked seeing the SU functionality built in to the ROM (it is available right from the settings menu near the developer options). Is it actually part of the kernel or part of the ROM? When it was broken, it was as if I still had root access but couldn't use it because there wasn't an SU manager. So, I don't know that root was broken so much as the SU piece that seems to manage it.
In any event, I suspect you are right about needing ODIN for the modem. So, what file should I flash as the "modem" in ODIN? I think that is the next thing I should try as I was only doing the modem patch via recovery before.
Also, is there a tuturiol somewhere that would help me understand the entire Android file system? I am a developer by trade, but I'm not super-experienced in the Linux (and Unix) realm. I would like to read up on things like
- how the storage is partitioned
- what files are part of the kernal
- what files are part of the modem
- what files are part of the ROM
- what files are part of the recovery platform
I'm guessing I won't find a CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT - LOL.

Once I've mastered this phone I may move on to my daughter's GS2 and maybe think about a GS3 or GS4 in the future...

OK, after some further reading, I believe what I need to try next is to load a new modem.bin file using ODIN. I would use "Phone" (not "PDA").
I think I downloaded 2 different modem versions that hopefully have what I need. I can't check them at the moment, but will try one of those tonight. if you have any suggestions as to which modem to use, please let me know (my kernel version is shown previously).
I also found some good info on the Android file system and I understand a little better how the paritions work for kernel, system, storage, cache...
Also, what is this JB Big Mem fix that I've seen in some of the patches?

Modem.bin
Actually, the 2 modem/radio files I have are zip files and there is no modem.bin file inside. What exactly do I flash with ODIN?

Yes, use the Phone slot for flashing the modem.bin.
As for the kernel patches, there are swap files that you can flash in recovery that will use the proper blobs for your preferred modem type. Typically, roms will state in the thread title if they are NS4G or not. Always assume the ROM is Epic modem.
BigMem is for capturing video from the camera app.

Ok, all Epic modems and NS4G modems are reuploaded. I also included the swap files for each. Everything with (Flashable) means to be flashed within recovery. Those swap files are the blob changes I mentioned earlier. This way you can swap modems using recovery, rather than relying on Odin.
Everything in the Odin folder can be placed in the phone slot and flashed as-is. (No need to extract the .bin file from the archive.)
As for the built-in root manager in CM, I'd try reflashing the rom first, and then messing with the modem.

I think ive made a mistake on attempting to install a custom rom on a 18160L version. I really wanted to give the thing a boost as it was really starting to slow right down.
Ive backed up my "tee" file and replaced the tee file in the latest cyanogenmod, Shoud this enough to just start flashing ?
i installed a custom kernel containing cwm, the issue with it as it cant mount external sd also the cyanogenmod give status 7 when i attempt to flash it.
Also im attempting to adb push these files across to /emmc but after apearing to move correctly i cant find them on the device (they just dont apear)
Im kinda at a lost, as this is my first samsung device ive worked on, i releize odin is a possibility to atleast recover if things become real bad but i cant find the vaild oden file (new zealand firmware) since hotfile is down
If anyone can set me on the right track id be massively appreciative
Edit build prop to make ur phone GT-I8160 or delete assert in the updater script of CM zip

Just flash via odin any JB european stock rom, then using temporary CwMod flash CM, after that use "tee" method.

Sorry guys, i forgot about this thread i actually managed to get it working, although im not a 100% sure what i done that finally got it working, anyway the recipient was much happier with cm10.2 than 4.1 stock jellybean
