Nexus 5! More Images leaked! - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I am so excited about this. Can wait for some specs. I know I will probably be drilled by this. But oh well this is general. More details hopefully coming soon.

Liked the number of band it supports!

My question is would it (with a little bit of XDA love) work on Verizon? I see CDMA/EVDO rev. A support and LTE band 4 (and I know that Verizon is "switching on" that band later this year), but are the frequencies compatible? And if anyone happens to know, does Verizon have rules about these kind of things? I assume they do, they are soooooo strict -______-. I understand that this phone is not being marketed at the Verizon crowd, but what's the point of XDA if we can't ponder and tinker .
On a carrier-free note, I hope the battery is removable. I really like the ability to remove the battery on the GNexus. I would hope for an SD-Card slot, but that is a pipe dream.

If it doesn't have a removable battery or a micro-SD expansion slot (one or the other, preferably both) then y'all can take it. Not interested.

battery's rumoured to be 2300mAH
with a full hd screen( i think it will be ) u need moar power

It's 835Mhz CDMA (Sprint), Verizon's is 800Mhz. The 5 also lacks support for Verizon's LTE band (13). It's not coming to Verizon.

that's the future..for now xD
no removable storage: less code to manage mount/unmount of the sdcard, and less problems
no removable battery: better elettric conduction between the battery and the phone
that's always how technology go on, it add some pro and add few cons
i'm waiting nexus 5 to sell my gnex

That's right, I'm still using a Galaxy Note 2. Consider: each iteration of Android, from Donut to Jelly Bean and eventually KitKat, uses more and more internal storage, and yet somehow available storage is still pegged at 16 GB. With Jelly Bean only 10 GB of that is available to the user, thus making external storage even more important. Who knows how much KitKat will use? Then, when they start putting high-res cameras into those phones, like Nokia's 41-megapixel monster (and they will!), how many frames can you shoot before you run out of internal memory? Five? Six? That's why I won't ever buy a phone that doesn't support external memory expansion.
The other reason is backups -- who the hell thought backing up your internal memory to the same place was a good idea? Cloud backups, you say? Sure, if you have the time to tie up your phone like that and you have faith in its reliability (I don't -- I've seen cloud uploads fail too often). Face it, phones that don't have external expansion are taking you for a very expensive ride.

I highly doubt you will EVER see a Nexus device with SD slot.

I just hope the phone supports OTG. If this phone is "based" off the LG G2, it "should" support USB OTG. I would have no problem carrying around a 32gb flash drive. They are about half the size of my pinky finger.
The non-removable battery is not a big deal. I wish it was around 2600 mAh, but it should get about 2.5 hours of screen time, which would be perfect for me, and most general smartphone users.

What's with all this crying? MicroSD is unnecessary anyway with the ease of access to cloud storage and I can't understand why anyone would need 32 gig+ on their phone.
If you really need extra storage for media you can always use USB otg..

Have to say it looks good, but I really like the size of the Moto X better.

Two words: data limits.
I'll use usb otg, if supported, but until carriers go back to unlimited data (it will happen at some point in the future), cloud storage is not a way around the problem.

[Q] How many people wanted removable storage on a Galaxy Nexus?

Like the title says, I'm curious to see how many people actually wanted this function. I was a bit disappointed when I heard about the lack of removable memory, but I lust after this phone. I do have a 16GB card that's near capacity. I haven't cleaned it out in a while, so I'll do that first. Hopefully 16GB will be enough for me. But I digress, this isn't a rant about how the Galaxy Nexus doesn't have removable memory. This thread is more about seeing the percentage of people who did want this function.
I did want it, just like I wanted it on the NS. But I understand that I don't NEED removable storage and will be buying the GN the first chance I get. And given the choice, I'll probably go with a 16GB version, because I still have about 4GB of free space on my NS.
I really wanted an sdcard slot on it. I will have to import the phone as the 32GB versions as there seems to be no current plans to sell that version in Sweden according to Samsung themselves. 32GB is minimum for me. I had hoped to be able to get a 32 GB version and then plug in my 32 GB microsd for even more storage.
Wanted it, but mostly because i got a 32GB MicroSD card already
All of my storage is wasted on nandroids anyway.
The lack of the card slot (which even my Nexus One has) is a real shame - it would only have cost a few pence to include a card slot unless there is something I have missed. The slot would have been preferred to the barometer by the vast majority of people - if we had to choose one or the other.
If they were releasing the 32GB in the UK i wouldn't have wanted an SD slot as that would be enough for me. But as we're only getting the 16GB for whatever reason i would want an SD.
As they're not doing either i'll have to stay with my GS2.
i know i'm having issues with my card slot and/or SD card on my Fascinate. It'll say my SD card is ejected when it's not. I'm starting to think the omission of a card slot isn't so bad.. less moving parts = less things to break? lol
Not too bothered about it at all, never take my card out of the current phone.

I was a little upset about no SD at first, but then realized that I haven't taken the card out of my N1 since I first got the phone and used it to transfer stuff to the new phone...easy enough to do with a USB and 5 minutes.
Only thing that bums me out is I basically can't get the 16GB because if I run out of space I'm hosed.

You are totally missing the point of the sdcard slot. The biggest advantage is being able to upgrade the amount of storage if you need it. The fact that it costs next to nothing now makes it even better. Also, a less used upside is the ability to read it even if your phone stops turning on at all.
To me, the best solution would be to have lots of internal storage but still have the option of an sdcard for extra storage for movies, lossless audio and other big files if the user wanted. I would be totally fine with it being used entirely for user storage. Any form of cache files that are currently stored on the sdcard probably belongs on the internal memory.

Well you got a small screen so movies shouldnt be large in size and phones probably aren't the best devices to playback lossless audio to make a difference audibly.
I'm pro SD card though but really you just slap a large one in there and forget about it. I do use it as a quick medium to transfer custom roms and kernels to my buddies... pictures to my gf... etc. Seemed transfers were faster directly using the SD card vs going through the phone... but with the cloud and wireless transfer methods, its a mute point.
Most stuff can be in the cloud such as pictures and music and even nandroid backups (only need a few locally). I keep games/apps/wallpapers locally but those could even go to the cloud. As long as I can download them when I need them. And you don't need to have a whole movie collection on you at all times. Just a few throwbacks for travels.
My collection spans since my nexus one and its maybe 4-5gb minus music
G2x - 2.3.7 CM7
Transformer - 3.2 Revolver OC/UV
i got a good collection of 32GB that i parked since i got stuck with Nexus S, i was really hoping GN would have the SD slot
and just purchased a 64GB microSD, with no where to use it on the GN
what am I going to do with my class 10 MicroSD?
I did want it. But I guess its cool that they're selling a 32gb version, just hope it's not an outrageous price. But I've never modded a phone without removable storage before. Either way, I'm buying on launch day.ill be importing from the UK since T-Mobile hasn't said a peep about it and I don't feel like waiting another month or two or three

Preorder 32/64 GB

The Note II is certainly the (if not) best Android phone of 2012. I'm just wondering, does anyone know when the 32/64 GB versions of the Note II will be available. Currently there's only the 16GB version. Also, do you think the Note II will get a 2GHz stable overclock? I I'd like to think so. Thanks

Honestly why do you need that much space/speed ? Just stick a 32gb card in it. If you try to overclock it you'll just fry it and kill the battery and any warranty.

Because I choose to buy a 64GB version. I didn't ask which one I should get, I asked where I could find those versions. Anyway most high end Android phones can all be overclocked. Like One X or S III. People run them at 1.8GHz without issues.

Your storage space issue is for me the easiest to answer. I am an extensive user of audio books. The teaching company series, Will Durant's seminal 12 volume series, podcasts, science fiction audio... Asimov, Huxley, Clarke, current fiction, "Why the West Rules for Now" (i highly recommend by the way) is how i keep sane on morning and evening commutes. I have a 16gb g-note and a 64gb SD card and i use all of this storage. Samsung's release of a new 128gb SD card will be none to soon, and if it cannot be utilized on my current note, it will most likely spur me to buy the note 2 with 2 GB ram and 64 GB SD internal. I also can access and stream from my collection on my home server but my at&t "unlimited" isn't, so i use WiFi whenever possible. This means that i use the phones memory as a cache buffer to limit my telecoms' leverage. Concerning speed. I am currently testing an incredible voice control app called Utter. Extremely flexible, configurable and powerful. Coupled with Ivona voice the results are simply stunning. I am also running a custom JellyBean rom called slimbean that is half the size of ice cream, is overclocked at 1.8 ghz and is as smooth as a baby's butt. I've been overclocking and flashing roms since i joined xda, its why i joined xda. I understand your credulity, we do still call these devices phones after all. i am also aware that my setup and usage is not typical, yet it is just this flexibility of android and current Samsung products that make them so attractive people like us with such differing needs and views.
..........................................................................
To the Op, i am keeping my eye out for the larger 32/64 internal storage versions and will let you know if i stumble on a release date reference. Thanks for starting this thread

3 strike policy, and you're out of XDA, haha
First time i heard the "you don't need that much.... " line was when i opted for a 10MB hard drive for my then new spanking hot PC AT. It had a 16bit processor and 512kb of ram...my buddy had the
commodore 64 (64 KB of ram and a cassette based memory). Despite his lack of technical sense, we remain friends to this day. Unsurprisingly, he favors that other phone ecosystem....the glass jewelry ones with those little screens. He still freaks out when he sees my note. His first words? Yeah, you guessed it; " you don't need that much..." I notice his wife checking it out though... So maybe there is some justice in this life

You only get to see the true value of a decision if you get to live with it.
I had friends that laughed at me s3 about its size. Now one of thes ( a .... girl! ) got one for free
Her first reaction was "un#@#$ing believable... i was blind and now i saw!"
Same thing with 2nd battery. People give 500+$ for a phone and they don't get an extra battery and a charger.
If i borrow them mine for a few days they get to "see the light"
Same thing with sd cards. From 16 to 32 and from there to 64gb they were telling me what you will do with all that space for ?
Guess what? Its usually full.
So i ll be waiting for the 32gb at least , i dont believe we will see a 64gb version sadly
We might need to wait for a month or so to get it
64gb + 64gb
I have about 80GB of mp3 files which I want to carry around with me. I have several GB more of pictures I have a Galaxy S3 with 32GB internal and a 64GB card, and it's getting crowded. And I'll keep adding more files. Maybe one day I'll be comfortable with keeping this in "the cloud", or streaming it from HDs in my house, but right now I want it all on my phone.
Right now Samsung's web page only mentions a 16GB version for US carriers. I definitely won't buy that.
I agree with the philosophy of not questioning why someone wants the storage they want.
It is already available for pre-order on some sites (handyshop.de) by an exorbitant price of 899 eur and a delivery date at the end of October...

I would imagine that a class 10 64GB card would not be a good idea as a replacement to the built-in 16GB flash; I think the onboard flash is higher speed than any SD card we would install, even if you could get the Note II's storage controller and such to recognize the new chip properly, and do the connections properly.
Sounds like a cool project nonetheless
Try this, it will switch your external sd card to your internal sd card. So if you have a 64gb card you can essentially have a 64gb samsung note 2.

How are things running? The internal storage on the note 2 is about triple the speed of an extreme sd card running at 95mb/s. Note 2 internal read write is just over 220 mb/s. If you use a class 10 sd card, those are only 25-30mb/s. If your playing games with huge loads like Nova 3 or move huge amounts of video/photos, it's likely going to take a huge hit to speed if you use the SD card as internal storage.
It's like desktop PCs - many people use smaller ssds for the OS and the bigger but often slower drives for heavy storage. In this case then internal is like an ssd and the SD card is like a data drive.
Can you compare the transfer rate while moving a big video to and from the internal memory compared to moving the same video to the SD card mounted as the internal drive? Curious as to your results.

My point is not that iphone has better storage or not. What I want to say is Samsung stated that there is a 64 GB version of the Galaxy Note 2 and they don't release it at the same time as the release of the 16 GB. Apple actually release the 16/32/64 GB at the same time.
The funny thing is, Samsung actually can make its own flash memory. It does not have to depend on another company.

To be honest i cant tell of any difference in speed in day to day use. Apps load fine and just as fast as the internal sd. The core apps and Stock Rom are installed on the ram, so there wouldnt be any difference really with using the device. As for transferring videos back and forth i haven't really done and tests, but than again i would always store larger media files on the 64gb sd anyway. I do highly recommend this mod especially for someone looking for more capacity. i had this mod on my gs3 and no problems then, and i have no problems now. If anyone is holding out for the 64gb note 2 just look at the gs3 situation. You have to remember you arent removing the internal sd they are just swapped for each other in the OS. So the internal is now the external. Both are accessible just like normal.
I'm running a 64GB microSDXC and it's just fine and dandy. I agree they shouldn't announce it and then not have it available though.

To be honest i cant tell of any difference in speed in day to day use. Apps load fine and just as fast as the internal sd. The core apps and Stock Rom are installed on the ram, so there wouldnt be any difference really with using the device. yup the mod is definitely awesome, seriously have to love the xda developers and what they can accomplish on android.
So no issue with game speed? I had to uninstall about 4 games cause my memory was down to 1.65gb. This is the only reason I am thinking of really rooting right now

Maybe they'll release a 64GB when this is ready

Use EXTERNAL SD, do not rely on internal storage!
Earthbrain said:
When are they going to release the 64 GB Galaxy Note 2 ? At least when Apple say that there is a 64 GB version, we actually see it in real life.
If Samsung is not going to release it, why even announce that there is a 64 GB version. Samsung may as well say that there is a 16/32/64/128/256 GB version of the Galaxy Note 2 during its event to make it look good.

You should never be worried about the internal memory size - even 8GB should be enough, AS LONG AS the phone comes with EXTERNAL SD CARD SLOT WHICH ACCEPTS LARGE SD CARDS. Having the external SD card is NOT necessarily about expanding your storing capacity (although a 64GB does that generously) but rather about having your information safe, significantly less prone to accidental formatting/erasing. Most of the time when you do a factory reset your internal storage is also formatted - do you want that to happen when you stored tons of important information? Of course not!! Worried about read/write speed? Buy a high quality, class 10 external SD card and I promise you won't see any drop in speed. Only use the internal storage for files that the system really looks for and requires to be placed inhere - otherwise, EVERYTHING else, especially large media files, backups and personal files should be kept onto the EXTERNAL SD Card. There are tons of advantages doing so and all those messages companies like Apple, HTC (newly adopted this stupid model), or others alike who try to influence and convince you that external SD cards are obsolete & cloud storage is better, all that is simply marketing BS. Buy Samsung because they didn't aligned themselves to the BS, because you can have a super generous 16GB internal storage and up to 64GB external storage. Do you need more than 80GB on the go? Then reconsider...really! Maybe you shouldn't download all the internet today, leave some for tomorrow when they'll make you pay for all that "free" cloud storage that you kept cramming onto today. Be open minded, understand how things work and do what's good for YOU not for the big corporations!
Several game loft games and the internal storage is gone... some people do that ya know
And most people dont know about all the hacks to get around this limitation.

Memory question

I picked up the note 8.0 the other day and I'm really enjoying it, but I looked in the storage section in settings and was perplexed. It shows only 9.78GB of total internal storage available. Is everyone getting that little space? My Nexus 7 had something like 13.5GB free, and my Note 10.1 had around 12GB free. I know you lose a bit due to file system format, etc...but over 6GB of 16? That seems messed up.

I saw in another thread in one of these xda Note 8.0 forums about folks mentioning the same thing, so I'm pretty sure it is not just you. Yeah, it is disappointing.
Yup. Samsung are taking massive chunks for system memory these days.

4GB of bloat above and beyond vanilla Android??? In a mobile OS like Android, that's a lot of bloat when you figure the average large app (not including games) is still near or under 25MB. That's about 160 apps at 25MB each!
Anyway, it kind of sucks. If they are going to eat up that much space with sheet they should make it with 24GB of storage so that when they sell a 16GB device it actually has 16GB!!! Ah well...I'm just *****ing now.
Don't have my device on me, but a df might tell how much of the /system partition's actually in use. My memory is that it's only about 60% or so.
parted can probably be used to resize /system but unless it's adjacent to /data, you'll want to take very careful notes before attempting that surgery.
Fortunately, you can use uni-init or term-init.sh to enable init.d scripts and then mount the sdcard as if it were internal storage. Most of my app data is written to my sdcard using that technique.
But we have an sd card slot, my N7 doesn't. Thats a nice addition to have.

Its not just bloat (apps) but OS (ROM) itself takes up more memory once the manufacturers start to add their proprietary "skins" to vanilla Android. Think of the extra features like Multi-Window and Smart Stay. That stuff takes up space, and the stock ROM is pretty huge (over 1 GB, I believe).
Not to mention, Sammy probaby reserves a chunk more on the ROM partition, in case they want to add more features on future updates.
Its very much the same on HTC devices, as well. On my One X, its also got 16 GB of memory, but only 9.93 GB available as storage.

It would be nice if they actually reported the "user accessible storage" amount, like saying "16 GB memory, with 10 GB user accessible". Since saying how much memory the device has, without telling us how much of it is sucked up by the OS, is kinda useless information.
It would have also been nice, if they had offered a 32 GB version in the US.
No companies report true information like that. Just like cars they give you hp at crank, instead of at wheels, where there is around a 20% difference. Same concept here.

Its more like the car company telling you the gas tank holds 16 gallons, when you can in fact only "use" 10 gallons of the gas tank.
I was trying out the demo set of Note 8 the other day at many different shops and were shock to see the the "available storage" on all the Note 8 were about 3.5GB to 3.8GB. I thought that being a demo set, it could be that there were many apps and useless stuff installed by other users. I've tried deleting useless data and uninstalling apps on 1 of them (resetting options were greyed out in settings) and still couldn't go above 4GB. I asked the staff and they confirmed that the "available storage" is that low. My question is whether the Note 8 used for demo were "different" from those that were for sale. It's quite unbelievable that all the Note 8 I saw (about 10 numbers at different shops) having so low storage available. That's one major reason I have not get my set yet.

Looking at the numbers your talking about, it looks like that demo unit had 8GB of internal memory. The units that are available for purchase are 16gb units and have about 10GB of free space on them for apps etc. In addition to this you also have the microSD card slot that allows for extra storage for media files etc but not applications.
If you are willing to root your device, you are able to use external storage for app data as well though. I should be receiving my 16gb wifi note 8.0 this evening (fingers crossed it has been delivered to the store) and will be using a 64gb microSD card in conjuntion with an app called FolderMount in order to use it to transfer application data from the internal storage thus allowing me to install more apps and games.
If your holding out for a 32gb model you may be waiting a while though as the website customer services and samsung store employees told me that they are not aware of a release day for a higher capacity device.
The storage data I talk about is true for the UK, I dont know if it would be the same where you are, but from what I can tell, all note 8.0s are 16gb capaciity at the moment. Hope that helps.

Thanks. I will go back to check with store on whether their demo set were the 8GB or 16GB version. I've googled for the tech spec on Note 8 and all comes with 16GB or 32GB. The nearest match to 8GB will be on a Tab2. Thanks again and I'm from Singapore.
Alright, I have checked with the store assistance and it was confirmed that at hit on display were Wi-Fi only and it's only at 8GB. I'm a happy owner of Note 8 now and it has 8.7GB of available storage.

What next after the Note 4?

I'm finally getting to the point where I'm tired of not having root and might bite the bullet and spend the couple hundred to early upgrade to another device and I'm kinda out of the loop on what's what now. Maybe you guys have some input? I used to only use the upper-end Samsung phones, but since I'm on Verizon now it's not looking so good (at least with the Note 4). What top-end phone is out there for Verizon that can be rooted and has an external card slot?
Can't speak to if it can be rooted or not but this is what I am going with.
I went with the Nexus 5x. Good price, quick updates, unlocked bootloader, compatible with every US carrier, and more available pocket space. It's a step down in some aspects, but as a hypochondriac, I really shouldn't have access to a pulse oximeter in the first place lol.
well not willing to spend $500+ for a Verizon bloat boat phone, I'm looking at the nexus 5x, nexus 6p, Moto x pure and OnePlus2. All of them will settle my flashing addiction. 6P is a little pricey so I may go with one plus 2. $389 for 64GB version. The only beef I have is it isnt AMOLED.
Ive been looking at getting a nexus 6p, because i really like the screen size of my note 4. Sucks it cannot accept sd cards, and the battery cannot be removed, but with an option of 128mb built in, and how well the internal battery performs on it, it throws those issues out the window for me.
Looks like the Nexus 6P in 128gb would be the most interesting out of those mentioned. It just sucks that with the improvement of the technology, there has to be compromise. Maybe the external memory option is getting dropped because it's getting unused from all the online/cloud services now? I just can't imagine not having ample storage space for NAND backups, app backups, alternate ROMs, etc... And then moving things back and forth to memory. Sure wireless ac is nice, but what about some damn USB 3.0? *sigh*

Well I think a big reason is for the deletion of microSD is room in the phone. They strive for thinner phones with more features. With the online\ cloud space really why do you need a micro sd? You can store the important things on the internal memory and things you don't need to access all the time on the cloud. SD cards are only another thing to go wrong with the phone.
Check out the Elephone phone. It has a SDcard slot. Down side is it has a MediaTek CPU which may hinder custom ROMs.

I agree, it is another thing that can go wrong with the phone, and I've had plenty of issues with them. It might just be more of an issue of want versus need and what I'm comfortable with. My downtime isn't always places with a good connection to the internet, so the storage space is a lifesaver. I do have one of those thumb drives that has a micro usb port on it, so that might just live in my pocket or something instead.
moto x pure is pretty sweet. keeping my note as a backup though.

I just ordered a 6P. I'll be keeping this as a backup for sure. I really love this hardware, but I'm getting tired of the issues 5.0.1 carries.
