Keeping it clean - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

I'm sure that others out there have had this same problem. You love your S4 flip cover but hate how dirty it gets inside. Well I just found the solution. Rubbing alcohol! I know it sounds weird but I just tried it and it worked great. I can't take credit, I wish I could. I found an article on Life Hacker about cleaning microfiber couches with it and thought I'd give it a try. Mine was filthy and now looks way better. Any cleaning (even just water) seams to diminish the color a little, but its much better then dirty. I personally had quit using mine but now its happily back on my phone. Hope this helps someone else.

Just for those wondering, the smell goes away completely after it dries.

I use alcohol swabs to clean my phone all the time good stuff most definitely gets grease and crap off the screen too and dries extremely fast. Good call man

When I slide up my keyboard it gets stuck I was wondering if there is a way to lubricate it so it slides normally again

Tear it down and remove the sand.
I'd recommend while you have it apart that the sliding mechanism get blown out with canned air, wiped clean with an alcohol wipe, dried completely, lubed up with spray silicone lubricant on a Q-Tip, and any/all excess silicone wiped with a dry Q-Tip.
Can't find a teardown video, but if you've taken apart one cell phone, you can apply the same principles to pretty much any other. Get some safety pry's, a really small Torx driver, eyeglass repair kit for the philips screws, and rubber-tipped tweezers for any ribbon-locks. Just take it slow and diagram out the entire process on a couple sheets of paper, noting step-by-step.

Know what I did? Just hold it firmly, and slide it up and down untill it feels normal again... blow on it a lot too.

good to hear. i once (more than once...) dropped my droid 1 in a puddle and it ended up with silt or some very fine **** in the slider. it would slide ok but just the feel of it, i knew there was junk in there. i put alcohol on the sliders and opened/closed it a few times, applying the alcohol like once a day for about a week then cleaned it out with compressed air. worked great. also worked well when whiskey ended up in there!

I love this phone!

Brought it with me to Afghanistan for a little entertainment and it's definitely worth it. I also bought 2 extra batteries for it and it's great. I got music, movies, games and I get to talk to loved ones when I get the chance for wifi. Very durable phone and I'm just glad to have it.

How's it hold up against the sand out there?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Lol
Not every where in afghanistan is a sand box like Iraq and other haji countries. It's actually rather mountainous
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
The sand or dust is awful. My sinuses are so dried out! But the phone is fine. I have a screen protector so I just wipe it with a rag. The area I'm in is really dry. Lots of hills that are brown and look like they are made of pure dust!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
I just hope that the dust doesn't ruin the charging connectors. If it does, I should be okay with just charging by using a universal charger on the batteries.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
Sounds like hell lol, I've been thinking about joining the military lately... I guess if I end up somewhere like Afghanistan I'll take my E4GT for entertainment as well.
Good luck out there, I'm sure you'll be back to the states in no time. My cousin just got out of the Marines, he was also stationed out there.

They do seem to be pretty durable. The only complaint I have on mine is that there is a scratch op paint missing from the metal grill for the ear speaker. It is supposed to be painted black, but mine has a chip on it where the bare metal is showing through. Wonder if sprint would replace it for me....
Mine phone was dropped in water while bathing my kids and sucked on by my 8 month old and it still works like new!! This phone is like a toyota cant blow it up!!

Anyone not have their SIII in a case?

Just curious. I got my SIII on the 29th and haven't bothered with a case yet. My previous phone was an archaic Motorola Razr V3m that I had for 5 years and in that time I only dropped it a couple times on the carpet, and once it hit my closet door track which did put a ding on it. I'm thinking of just forgoing a case.
Only have ghost armor in mine. No hard case.
Dropped quite a few times. Usually just the battery case pops off in the harder falls. One fall left an slight dent that I didn't even notice till later.
Have dropped on sides and front. No screen cracks yet. No scratches...only because of the skin that covers the full body.

I drop my phone like everyday so I cant take that risk .
I have 2 wallet cases even to protect my screen

Where did you get the soft pouch? I love having those in my pockets tobjust slide the phone and out of there. I always have crap in my pockets having this will be nice.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Never bother with cases, bulky, ugly and unpractical. Had everything from a Nokia to iPhone 4s. Dropped all at least once when getting out of the car with my good luck none ever broke just a chip lol. However a screen protector is a must for resale value, most people don't care about the back.

Without a case I feel I'm going drop it or its going slip out my hand so, I got it in a case..

I only use leather holders with belt clips for carrying. Never ise the permanent cases. With a case phone wont fit in windshield mount thats made just for this phone.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
I have a thin spigen case... Adds no bulk, and and keeps the camera glass off the table when I set it down. I never drop my phone so protection is not an issue, and just the screen (zagg), and the camera lens.

I've just recently noticed that they're 3 dark spots behind the glass myself. I only noticed it while I was flashing a ROM and it got stuck on just a black screen but was still illuminated. Wonder what that can be. I haven't dropped this phone that i can recall.
As far as cases go, I normally don't buy them but i do have a TPU case for this phone that i put on every now and then

This was a common issue with the t989(s2) right out of the box it's a defect call T-Mobile and get a free warranty replacement. Probably shouldn't mention the drop although pretty sure that has nothing to do with it as I'm on my second s3 and they have both had dark spots. It took me three tries to get a perfect s2

Yeah I plan on keeping mine for a while at least when my manufactures warranty is coming to an end I'll have a legit reason to get a brand new/refurb phone.
Yea those dark spots were bad on the t989 actually very bad. The gs3 is a long way from that but this is definitely the result of their amoled screen
I'm using a D30 case from T-Mobile but I have never dropped my phone, I rarely leave it out unless it's on the charger when I'm in bed. I don't get how people don't protect their devices in some way.
The glass of this phone seems to cracked too easily, so I bought a case for this phone. This is the first phone I ever feel that need a case. I had the galaxy s and the iphone 4 and both were never in a case.

I bought the GS3 at full price no contract or upgrade, I'm not trying to tell anyone how to take care of their things but if anyone is willing to just throw away 650$ because not having a case on their device is restricting then my hands are willing to catch it lol.

I used rainx before I got my extreme guard front/back protector. It help alot...kept most of the oils off the phone. A barely damp cloth brings back that shine.

[WATERPROOFING] - Would you try this with your phone?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=DZrjXSsfxMQ
They showed an iPhone getting dunked in a bucket of water. Interesting idea. Would anybody ever try this on their phone/tablet/keyboard/laptop?
Now that I took a better look, it's a Sprint iPhone. No better iPhone to dunk in water. Just sayin.

That's really neat technology, but I wouldn't do it to the phone I paid $600 for. To be honest, water damage is the least of my concerns. I'm far more likely to drop it on pavement or gravel.

I sure hope you weren't a can of hydrophobic solution!
I remember seeing the first videos for this and thought it seems awesome. Many kinds of possibilities for the stuff. Just wondering how clear of a coating this stuff is, if it'll affect the touch sensitivity much, heat dissipation, and if it'll muffle the speakers and mic.

What about the connectors for battery, sd and sim cards, headphone jack, usb port.....I'm assuming you'd have to scrape the stuff off of where ever there needs to be bare metal for a connection. If anyone does this be extremely careful of the usb/charging port! It can be easily damaged. And this stuff probably won't be easy to get out of a headphone jack if it blocks the connection.
I'm also curious about the effect it has on the sound, but more importantly the mic. Will others be able to hear you as well?
I'm cautiously optimistic with this stuff. It is awesome, but for a smart phone, I don't know. Kinda wonder if they were just using it as an extreme demonstration, like the guy with a screen door in the bottom of the boat. Sure it can be done, but it is never actually recommended you do so.
Not trying to be a downer, just thinking of all the angles to look at before doing a $600 test. Be careful! And good luck! I really do hope it works w/o any issues!
Oh and someone asked about touchscreen sensitivity. They did not apply it to the screen.
