[Q] no keyboard to unlock device - HTC One X

I had previously installed the gingerbread keyboard app on my device. It recently stopped working and now I am unable to unlock my phone. When I slide the ring to open it says enter pin but no keyboard pops up. I am trying to save all my data, music pictures etc. But I am unable to sync to PC while phone is locked. Please tell me somebody knows a way to get my stuff without doing a factory reset which would likely wipe everything!!

Wipe data/factory reset from recovery... That way you'll keep everything on the virtual sd card, but loose all settings and apps if you wanna do a wipe...
But there has to be a way to enable the keyboard without wiping...

So a factory reset will not wipe data like pictures and music files?
The HTC tech said there was about a 50 50 chance it might.
I was wondering if there was an external wired keyboard I could attach to enter my PIN

If you would buy an USB OTG cable you could plug in your PC's Keyboard

Clear storage/hard reset?

What is the different between the 2? I don't mean to sound stupid, but don't they both do the same thing?
I know to clear storage, i can do that from Settings, but to Hard Reset some people are suggesting to shut off the phone and hold Volume UP and Volume DOWN... all this stuff
don't they both do the same thing?
Yes, they both will do hard reset. But doing it via the button press combination enabled you to do it without going into the OS. It's helpful for when you messed something up so bad that your device won't boot.
oh okay... that makes sense, thanks man
The hard reset will actualy clear everything and make it like you just took your phone out of the box. Clearing storage will leave some things unchanged in the OS.

That's not true. Going to "Clear Storage", entering "1234", and tapping "yes" is equal to hard reset.

Leave what unchanged exactly?
Clear Storage takes it back to the default settings of the ROM. Everything 'reloads' so to speak just like after a hard-reset.
It's the equivalent of "Restore to Factory defaults" on other phones.
Exactly the same as an HR.
so even if i flashed 6.5 wwe, and have hardspl it will return it back to 6.1 "out of the box"

No... It's restored to factory-defaults only if you haven't already replaced the factory rom contents with a new rom.
perfect thats waht i needed to hear!
Does it matter if the memory card is in, it is not going to delete all the applications on it I guess. How about all the contacts, I couldn't find them on the phone, no idea where exactly they were stored

Contacts are stored on the device (I believe in a file called pim.vol at the root of the device), and will be lost of a hard reset is performed. There is a free program called PIMBackup which will back up and restore your contacts.
As far as having your SD Card in, it doesn't matter, I hard reset all the time, and don't lose any card data. However, if you've enabled storage card encryption, you need to disable it before your hard reset or you will lose all data on the card. This is because it will still be encrypted and your device will fail to read it, as it no longer knows the encryption key.

Thanks for the fast reply, it's relly helpful. I just found the encryption function, it was not enabled to begin with so I guess the card should be fine. Do I have to save PIMBackup on the phone or storage card will work?

Go to Start>Settings>System and there might be something like Encrypt Storage Card. But, I forgot that a lot of cooked ROMs leave this setting out, in which case you need not worry about it. Besides, you have to explicitly enable it, and I'm sure that if you did that you'd remember.

Keep your backup files on the storage card. Otherwise, they will be wiped out in the hard reset.
OK here is why I say a clear storage is different from a hard reset. KforTP was not working on my Sprint TP2. Normally during the install, it would say something along the lines for found "xxx.dll" and then would soft reset the device. Well it was not working. I tried 3 times to clear storage each time making it seem like it was set to factory default. How ever when I installed KforTP it would never or display the found "xxx.dll". The reason I did a clear storage was because I didn't even know about the hard reset.
Did some research found that hold call and end call then the power button would hard reset the device. Did that hit vol up to confirm restored the software and then the KforTP worked like a charm.
So my only logical conclusion was that a clear storage was not wiping everything.

[Q] Forgot Lock Screen PIN

Hi guys, i've forgot the lock screen pin, but theres no option for it to be restored via the forgot password gmail.
I haven't got a backup of my photos and videos, its all im botheed about but a factory reset wil wipe these wont they?
What are my options if any?
A factory reset will only wipe your apps, app data, calls, and messages.
Do you have Samsung Dive set up or an app such as Creberus? They can unlock your screen.
I have setup samsung dive before hand but its doesnt work, i've left it on all night and it just says connecting.
So factory reset wont wipe my photo's and video's?
Factory reset would in fact wipe your photos and videos if they are located in internal storage. But how do you intend to factory reset if you can't unlock the phone?
I've factory reset and lost everything now guys, gutting really as i've just came back from a holiday and eveything was on there, i booted up into recovery mode and did it from there.
I'm pretty sure there's an adb unlock command or similar.

Well all images and videos are gone now anyway. Doubt there is a way to get them back. They were pricless too. Only myself to blame though.
My phone always sends my photos or videos to Dropbox and it's even save on my Google account... So how come it's not the case for you??
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
ii was on holiday in spain, the roaming charges would be very expensive!
If i root the phone could the images be stored somewhere, or as the factory reset totally wiped them?
There is an undelete app in market. Whether it will work or not is a different issue altogether though.

It's still possible to recover photos/videos from internal memory after a factory reset.
Just dont do anything with the phone and use airplane mode. Dont enable any wireless/data connectivity so the phone autorestore anything.
Download any recover software and install it on PC. Like Recuva, any free recover software or follow this guide (it use Stellar Photo Recovery software): http://android-photo-recovery.com/tutorials/recover-deleted-photos-videos-from-android-phones-internal-memory.html
Connect phone to PC and use the photo recover software to scan through phones internal memory. Use deep scan and hopes for luck to recover as many as possible. U wont recover all the photos/videos, since the factory reset have overwritten most of it and just hopes for the best.
Also, best is get a microsd card, can then choose between to take photos/videos and save it to internal or external card. I choose all photos/videos taken with camera to save it to mine 64GB microsd card. That way, even factory reset wont delete any photos/videos from external sdcard. Also can manual move all important files to external card, or use sync software to sync between PC/phone with wireless, whenever at home. Like Cheetah Sync app.

How to use On Screen Phone? (the hard way)

Things with this device just keep getting better and better, it's amazing and earlier today the glass was cracked, so now the Digitiser is semi broken and I'm unable to unlock my patten lock, to change the USB mode to LG Software, then use On Screen Phone
Are there any workarounds, that involve not formatting / resetting my device please?
Also, I hope to save / backup data before repair too, so suggestions are welcome
Help will be greatly appreciated

I think that there is no solution. You can conserve your internal storage but you will need wipe data

Can you please clarify, as it's not clear (to me at least) what you mean?
As system files / settings are not important to me, just personal files
No problem. If you have rooted an unlocked bootloader, you can enter recovery and wipe data/cache. This will let you the phone like it comes to your hand, all apps you download will be deleted, contacts, messaging, but your lockacreen security will be gone so you can unlock your lockacreen. Your internal storage, music, and other files that you have in your memory will not be affected.
If you dont have recovery you will need to shutdown phone, and hold power button+voldown option and will see a menu to delete all files, data/cache and your internal storage. This is the only solution if you dont have recovery.

It's a sound option and I have already looked in to that - http://en.miui.com/thread-5684-1-1.html
However, it all comes back to warranty issues, so I'm going to have the broken hardware repaired, which pains me as I love DIY and hate paying others to repair my stuff (shaking fist in the air)
Many thanks for your help

You need to backup internal storage things ? or some like apps or whatsapp conversation ?
If you want to backup something of your internal storage, you can wipe data/cache. It will let your phone from like it come to your hands, and screen pin will gone.

[Q] Factory Resetting phone with no display.

I am trying to sell my wifes old S4 Mini after she dropped it and cracked the display. The problem I have is I want to factory reset it to clear any sensitive data.
Is it possible when the LCD will not come on at all? The phone does connect to my pc for file transfer fine.
If its not possible what files can I safely delete from the phone manually from the PC? After looking through the folders there is only the Android Data and OBB folders that need stuff deleting from.
If I can safely delete any from here is there a way to make sure they remain deleted and are not recoverable?
Cheers in advance!

Thanks, anyone got any idea how long it is before the Samsung logo comes up as the thread I read says you need to stop pressing Vol Up + Power + Home at this point?
I'm trying different times but I just cannot get it into bootloader, ADB isnt recognizing any devices.
It's fast, press power and immediately as it vibrates press home and vol+ but give it a minute to let the recovery boot, then connect if the command fastboot devices show a device you're good to go
I think flashing a stock with odin+pit file and repartition wipe all but this is risky
