I USB tether my phone to my PC and for weeks everything was fine and I was using gigabytes worth of data on various AOSP ROMs. Yesterday a friend asked me to root his SGS3 and I did, during the process I installed the drivers and noticed that when I tried to restart tethering it said "Tethering failed" on my phone, so I rebooted it and than it began to work again.....for a few minutes until it redirected me to the T-Mobile page that tells me that I don't have the tethering package and it wants me to pay $30/month.
I know this is a driver issue because I have a virtualized Linux guest running on the same PC and it uses the tethering connection and everything works fine, no T-Mobile page. I uninstalled the driver package that I had installed and rebooted, but I still get the T-Mobile page after a few minutes. There aren't any drivers left to uninstall in Device Manager so I don't know where to go from here.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Root and edit the customer.XML file. It's hard coded to redirect you to the upsell page. Strange how the drivers "tripped" it cause it doesn't even use Samsung drivers for that. Not to mention the drivers have nothing to do with T-Mobile. You prolly just reached your tethering cap. Try using your Linux build to access the internet via chrome for Linux.

What should I edit and where is this file located? I have been accessing the internet via chrome for Linux. Why would I have hit my cap all of the sudden when in previous months I've used 12 GB/month with no problem?
I found a link mentioning that the file was located at /system/csc/customer.xml but I didn't find it, I forgot to mention that I'm running SlimBean B4 (based off of CM 10.2). Does this file only exist on Stock ROMs?

Ah. That ROM definitely has tethering added. What browser are you using when you tether?

I use Google Chrome in both Windows 7 and Linux. Just tried it with IE and Firefox on W7 and got the same result.

In Linux, you shouldn't be getting blocked if using chromium (Linux version of chrome) I tether all the time and use chrome (windows 7)

I just tried it on my dad's computer at home which runs Windows 7 and didn't have any of the drivers installed. When I plugged it in it installed the drivers and I went to two websites just fine with chrome until the tmobile page page came up so I guess it wasn't the drivers. Fallacy of false cause strikes again!
Wonder what killed my tethering on an AOSP ROM then?

On your computer, go into Google Chrome > Extensions and then search for user agent switcher then choose "android" and it should work.
But won't that make everything show up with the mobile layout?
Edit: that worked instantly, but I wish I could still use it with the normal desktop layout :-/

K SO I connect to my wifi at home to update the weather and sometimes surf the internet on my phone.
I thought I'd install opera mini one night SO I DID. Fancy that. It was great, totally awesome. LOVED IT. It's been working fine. One night I change the connection type from socket to HTTP. Still works. YAY!! I figure it's probably best at the default so I set it back to socket. Still works. YAY!!x2.
A day or two later, I don't really know, it just MAGICALLY stops working. I can connect wifi. I can download and update my weather. I can browse the FARKING INTARWEBS with IE (which blows nuts on a mobile) but for some magical, faerie dust-laden, cute kitten covered reason Opera Mini "fails to connect."
I've not changed a damn thing about my phone or it's settings and I left Opera Mini at it's defaults!
DUBYA TEE EFF MATE!?
Have you tried to unistall and re-install?? may just reset everything and start working again. in use mini and not had any problems
Reinstall it. Also if you were using the Beta version its dead now. Opera only allows the betas to run on their servers until a full version is released so if you have the beta 4.2 it wont work. Download the newest one with certificates (signed)

If u uninstall then you be best to get the signed version by going to http://mini.opera.com in PIE and choosing if this version fails to install or you would like to install a previous version link, then download the top one it's signed so when u run the first time you get an option about security choose the top option and it wont annoy you always asking if ok to connect.
My Gnex refuses to install drivers. (windows 7) i tried on my brothers computer and it works fine but it will not work on mine. Anyone know where to find some drivers that will work. Im currently failing hard on samsungs site.
Can you explain what's happening when you try to install the drivers? Do they install correctly without any errors?
No they dont. I plug it in and it fails to install everytime ive tried with different cables and this is my second gnex having the exact same problem.

Because the problem is your computer/OS/you, not Galaxy Nexus.
Try GNex Toolkit to install drivers. If even that fails i would suggest to get your computer repaired or use brothers
PS don't forget to disconnect your phone before installing drivers.
Hmmm i thought it would be an easy driver download fix.

See the link i gave you, there's another two options that doesn't involve installing GNex Toolbox:
http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/06/how-to-set-up-adb-usb-drivers-for-android-devices/
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1379875
+1 to GNex Toolbox; worked like a charm for me!
i had a problem with the usb drivers too using toolkit but following the manual install instructions worked for me. i had to go into system->device manager on my pc and install from there using the manual install instructions provided with the toolkit(option 1 and then option 3 using the toolkit). good luck.
i had problems with using the toolkit as well, so i downloaded the pdanet drivers and installed and that worked

This worked for me too. PDAnet installed drivers properly. Tried everything else didn't work.
I know this is a dumb question but I gotta ask. Did you right click the installer and choose "Run as Administrator?" Sometimes that's all it needs (even when your login has administrative privileges, you're still not Administrator.)

try this plug your phone in and make sure usb debugging is checked on the phone(settings->developer options) then on your pc go to control panel->system->device manager. when your phone is plugged in you should see android 1.0 or galaxy and right click and select update driver. if you see nothing here then try plugging the usb in a different port on the back of your pc. Then select browse device for driver, after that choose option "let me pick from a list of drivers" there you should see google or samsung as a option and select it. if that worked you should be good to go.
Ok tried every USB port, still nothing and this is the error message i get when i try to install through the device manager.

you got this error after doing the manual install and choose from a list of drivers and found google in that list?
if so then uninstall all samsung drivers, pdanet and drivers. then reinstall the samsung usb driver first then try the manual install again. make sure you have the phone plugged in and usb debugging enabled when doing the manual install in device manager.
I have exactly the same problem. Root, pushing files, everything works, except MTP. Any suggestions?
anyone haev their tether working on 4.2? wifi tether, built in tether, and all other 3rd party apps dont work anymore. it was working on 4.1.2 but not on 4.2.
Wifi-tether working straight away here, I just enabled it and my computer connected straight away.
I did however install 4.2 with a full wipe, it seems people using the OTA have had plenty of bugs non of which I've experienced.

Mines not working :crying:
Seems to be a common problem over at the Wireless Tether for Root Users development site :-/
I use it a ton and miss it badly.
mine seems to be broken too how weird

any update on this? works on macs but not windows or xbox.
I was using a AOKP ROM with lean kernel (4.1.x) and wifi tethering was working fine.
I then went to 4.2.1 and 4.2.2, WiFi tethering so far has been broken.
I tried Bigxie's deoxed, tried Android Revolution HD 10.x, and Rootbox's 4.2.2 nightly with the same result where WiFi tethering doesn't work. In my case, the client that is trying to connect will connect, IP is assigned but it won't be able to access the internet.
The ROM flashing were a full wipe, as well as dirty wipe - made no difference.
I was using Pdanet on a USB tether and it no longer works after update. My phone is totally stock with no mods. I did a factory wipe and reinstalled everything and still a no go. PC is a Windows 7 box with all associated drivers reinstalled. Contacted June fabrics (Pdanet Dev) about it and they think its a driver issue.

For anyone that is interested, I got an email from PDAnet yesterday that says they have fixed the problem with a new PC side software install. I don't know if this helps any of you but there is a fix out there at least for PDAnet.
I'm currently using Stockorama ROM version 2(4.1.2) on my T-Mobile GS3. However, the VPN Service seems not working. The native client for PPTP and IPsec works fine, but any kind of app I download for OpenVPN does not work at all. I'm currently using VPN service by Private Internet Access, and it used to work fine on stock ROM, but after installing Stockorama it stopped working. I checked to see if TUN was present with TUN.ko, and it is there.
I tried out 3 apps. OpenVPN connect, OpenVPN for Android, and VPN for Private Internet Access.
All three fails to work. OpenVPN connect, and OpenVPN for Android both claims that this version of Android does not support, and PIA app just don't respond at all.
Is there a way to fix this? Please help.
The rom may have something removed that is required.
Dif you search the rom thread for similar problems?

I searched the rom thread to see if there was any VPN related issues, but I found none. However, I managed to fix it. Turns out, the Samsung's VPN Client app was required to have VPN Service API activated. On my previous install, I chose not to install that app when I was installing the rom with Aroma installer. However, when I tried reinstall with that app, few other VPN apps started working again(PIA, OpenVPN for Android). The 'OpenVPN Connect' still did not work saying that I need to install certification, but anyways I got the ones I need to work.
Thanks for the reply!
I dirty flashed Stockorama 2 and selected VPN Client from Samsung during install config and it works now. Thanks :good:
I updated to KitKat yesterday - sideloaded. It was a huge success! My shiny new Nexus 7 has KitKat.
But today, when connected to my PC via USB, it no longer shows up.... It used to appear as an external drive that I could drag/drop files to. Now? Nothing. And Google support has no idea. They said "maybe it's a result of the OS upgrade."
I tried a factory reset - no dice.
I've tried multiple ports and different computers - no dice.
I tried USBDView and removing anything Nexus/Android related and trying again - nothing.
Anyone else having this issue? Any thoughts at all?
Any advice would be a big help. The PC sees it - but I cannot add files to it. Awful.
Install android-sync you will have to look on Google for it, it installs the drivers u need .. Worked for me when I lost connection. U can uninstall after

I had the same problem, but I noticed that I was able to transfer files if I change the usb to a usb 2.0 port. On 3.0 doesn't work.
For sideload kitkat you need to enable camera mode in storage USB settings. Try to re-enable the default settings. (settings... Storage... More... USB connection...)
