Hi,
Having successfully applied the fix in this thread, i can connect to all the correct networks on my i747 phone. i got greedy apparently and wanted the most stable CM 10.1 that i could find. i installed it, but had to update the bootloader as per the instructions on the wiki. as a result, i was able to get the CM installed and working but the phone is no longer benefiting from the fix i mentioned before.
is it possible to get CM 10.1.* with the fix remaining in place? i tried simply to flash the tmobile version of the rom, but it failed immediately.

okay, well, i installed goomanager (probably could have done the same with rom manager) and was able to get a TWRP rom installed. when i booted, i was able to get HSPA and + so that was pretty important. then goo suggested an update to cm-10.1.3-RC1-d2att.zip. right now it's downloading. if i still get the networks, i'm in pretty great shape.
the main issue for wanting to upgrade this is because the AWS fix's recovery is stock, i think. i can't do backups with it.
meh... the upgrade failed. i'll perhaps try a different package, maybe i'll try rommanager.. i don't know. fortunately, i made a backup of the previous system called "just-in-case".
Okay you have a fall back position which is good.
I would suggest making a nandroid backup. Then configure AWS (NV method) onto a stock ROM.. confirm that it works. Then restore only your CM kernel (not the modem) on top of the working AWS configuration. And finally, restore the AWS NV contents again. That should work. And in the worst case, you have a fall back position, just in case.
Good luck

is this different than a TWRP or CWM backup?

for AWS/NV, i was flying by the seat of my pants. i actually don't really know what either of those are. i was fortunate that someone else did the work for me, and i didn't really have to understand what they did. can you slightly elaborate on what i'd be trying to accomplish?

You need to do some more reading. A nandroid backup is a complete backup e.g. one done by TWRP.
As for AWS.. if you don't know what it is, why are you trying to enable it? If your carrier is Rogers /Telus /Bell, etc you don't need and can't use AWS. AWS is a different set of frequencies used by carriers such as Wind, Mobilicity and T-Mobile. So the hack is to enable an AT&T or Rogers phone to be used on T-Mobile /Wind system. Is that what you are trying to do? If not, then you don't want AWS.
If you are pursuing AWS, then there are two different threads i.e. two different methods to go about it. And I was suggesting that the NV method, which is basically flashing the NV AWS configuration would be the easiest way to accommodate the CM ROM. You can easily find the NV thread if you search for it. Or search my post history for detailed instructions on how to flash it.
Cheers

it was a term used by someone in another thread and helped me get going. i have an at&t branded phone that i'm using on tmobile. he suggested i was stuck on edge becuase of AWS. i googled aws and my model and found a a thread (linked in my OP) that got me setup.
i've been just doing what others have been helpfully suggesting as long as i had some frame of understanding. you're getting more technical so i needed to see if you could give me a little more heads up. i explained clearly in my OP i was just standing on the shoulders of giants. you can obviously see that i have a pretty decent understanding of android, just not a fully comprehensive one. simply asking the question if a "nandroid backup" was different than a "TWRP" (or CWM) backup illustrates this point nicely.
Okay so you are using an AT&T phone on the T-Mobile system. So you do want AWS.
The original approach which involved flashing a custom T-Mobile engineering image to an AT&T phone endeavored to make s permanent change to AWS. Permanent in that the flashed files kept your phone in the AWS configuration even if you rebooted the phone.
The NV thread took a simpler tack. Assuming that you had a remotely compatible modem installed, you just flashed the NV (non volatile memory) contents onto the phone. This is information that would normally be loaded from the ROM during boot. So the NV method will work with almost any ROM and modem, but the settings are lost if you reboot your phone.
Nevertheless it is a better fit to your desire to have a CM ROM. You could simply reflash the NV information on every boot. But the recommended approach is to use the nvbackup command and an app called gscript. That enables a one click solution i.e. when you first turn your phone on (or reboot it), you click on the icon and it restores the AWS mode (by restoring the NV info). And then you're good to go until the next time your phone reboots.
having decided to revisit this issue again, i was reading the AWS thread i linked in my OP and stumbled across this post. it seems like a bunch of people confirmed that if you do the AWS fix (flash 4 files), then upgrade the bootloader, then upgrade the rom, and then flash the modem (all in that order) everything works and you get CM10.1 with all the correct bands.
so far i've flashed a new bootloader that will be compatible with CM10.1*, and i have the bands i expect to have. i have not yet upgraded the ROM, but i have faith, after seeing the other confirmations in that very thread, that it will work without any issues. android 4.3, here i come!

ok well i just made up this list a while ago to help someone out, and have ended up giving it to quite a few ppl now, so i figured i might as well post it here under an appropriate title for all to easily see and access.
i know dharvey wrote a great tutorial, and that there are prob others, but..what the heck. plus this is pretty quick and easy, though i cant say that it is as full and thought out and great as dharvey4651's (thx man!)...
IMPORTANT!!! ONLY SPRINT users follow below steps 5 and 8-11!! Altell users can follow all the steps except step 5 as long as they use a different ppst.exe, not the one mentioned below.
"#1- Backup all pim info and anything else you might want.
#2- Ensure you are currently running your carriers original official oem rom (os and radio) (if you have never flashed it at all then dont worry youre good to go).
#3- Unlock using imcokemans 2.31 unlocker (this for gps roms)
#4- run the sprint leaked rom.exe (here, close to the bottom where it says "original rom")
#5- SPRINT ONLY:allow all customizations to complete and run (i know - it takes a lil while)
#6- flash to desired rom.
#7- after she's all booted up, hard-reset.
#8- download and run cab from here (altell users run your own ppst stuff on the same post, non-sprint and non-altell users SKIP TO STEP 12): http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showpost.php?p=282955&postcount=139
#9- allow soft-rest.
#10- navigate to \windows folder and run ppst.exe
#11- allow soft reset.
#12- allow boot-up, customize, restore pim info etc...
credit to boggsie"
didnt use unlocker
I just ran the leaked ROM upgrade. It found my phone and flashed it. I never ran any of the SPL unlockers. Should I be worried about not being able to unlock later, or have trouble flashing an 'Official' release?

hey nope you'll be just fine, assuming that you arent going to flash to a custom rom. what is your current spl? you just will not be able to flash a custom rom until you unlock.

Hi All. I just recieved my touch last week and like the phone alot. I have flshed my old phone ( old I-mate PDA) a few times with files from here and it worked great.
But with the Touch you guys are talking about different kinds of touch phones. Where do I check what kind do I have. I am from South Africa and use MTN as my SP.
Will I be able to use the GPS ( Seen it in other threads)

im....not really sure. being on a different continent i dont think it would work the same, unless you were able to find a separate radio only rom for your carrier, in which case you could flash whatever rom you wanted (w/o letting the cusomizations run on first boot), then flash your carriers os only rom, then be good to go!

This post should be a sticky!!!!
This works perfectly except for the fact that the link to ppcgeeks on #8 is busted. What is missing from that link is the file for ppst.exe. I beat my brains in trying to get the stupid gps to work before I finally realized what was missing from my install.
Here is the PPST file from sprint that you do in fact need to make the gps work great. I lock onto the gps sats in about 15 seconds, in my house, to about 9 of em.

flashing cmda phone different from gsm?
Hi All,
I just got my new sprint vogue to replace my t-mobile wizard. I flashed my wizard extensively over the past 2 years but I'm not sure about the Vogue. How does a cmda phone retain its network settings and network contact info if it is flashed when theres no sim card? I'm not talking about PIM info but the info the phone uses to identify itself and communicate with the network.
thanks
Lotus
This worked great. It was my first time flashing and following these instructions everything worked out well and I get locked into satellites with the gps very fast. Thank you.
i have a couple questions. 1st is i have a sprint touch flashed to cricket if i were to install this rom will all my cricket settings stay intact or will i have to reflash to cricket? 2nd does this rom include WM6.1 along with gps, and rev. A?
thanks for any help.

i must say that im not exactly sure how. but i can say that...it just does. if you flash a different radio rom...then you can be in trouble if it is not for your carrier. but we are discussing os only roms here and the network settings are therefore not really affected
and ps for you too, dont allow any files named "ppst.exe" to be run, unless you are sure they are for your carrier

ok so..no specific rom is being discussed here. this is just a how-to for what/e rom you want.
and no you should not have to re-flash to cricket as long as you only flash an os-only rom, a rom that does not have a radio included, and you never allow any files named "ppst.exe" to be executed.
but most all the roms that you can flash using these instructions do have 6.1 with gps and rev a yes

HELP: when i try to load the v3[1].02.rar it asks for a password?????
if i use spb backup to restore in the last step, will that screw things up, since it reinstalls programs, etc as well????
While I was aware that this phone was available for different carriers, I didn't realize there were multiple versions of the phone itself. So when it came out for Sprint (my carrier), I picked one up and left it stock for a few weeks. Eventually I wanted to root my phone so I began searching for simple root how-to's.
I went into this with only minor caution considering I've read so much about these simple rooting methods that "anyone can use".
These are the websites I ended up following for rooting my phone:
(I apologize that I'm a new user and can't officially make hyperlinks)
rumah-android[dot]com/root-samsung-galaxy-s2.html
android-advice[dot]com/2011/how-to-root-samsung-galaxy-s2/
Obviously it says "Samsung Galaxy S2" - but in reality it wasn't referring to our Sprint version of the phone.
So I followed the instructions to the letter, and everything ran with success. There were no errors or anything like that. So I rebooted the phone only to find that my first two buttons at the bottom of the phone were no longer working and I lost all service.
Now this is where I make mistake #2 -- I thought it was a good idea to "factory restore", thinking that I would have to just restart the whole process again - completely forgetting that once you overwrite the kernel you're only restoring what you overwrote.
Thankfully, I can still get into download mode, but where should I go from here?
Let me know if there's any information you guys need.
I'm not sure exactly what you did, but here is how to get it back to stock:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1281287
After that if you still have no service you may have borked your modem/radio. I guess I'm tired because I can't find the thread to restore the stock radio, but its here somewhere. I'll look tomorrow and post it her if someone else hasn't already.
Hmm... You've seem to have done what I had done. You flashed a GSM version when your phone is a CDMA version. So the ROM is looking for a SIM card when the Epic 4G Touch doesn't have, or better yet, doesn't use one.
Here's a link to how-to root for the Epic 4G Touch
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1265429
^^ IDK if I can post hyperlinks yet, so yea...
My main reason for the link was so that you can get a ROM on your phone. As a just in case. The ROMs he links you to flash with Odin. I suggest clicking the link in his page instead of searching StarBurst and MidNight since there are the same ROMs on different devices.
If you have your phone working now, then oh. Never mind.
P.S. Just search for Epic 4G Touch and make sure it says that. This'll help prevent that. Also make sure it says "Epic 4G Touch" and NOT "Epic 4G". I almost made that mistake.

The tutorial for Rooting and all these ROMs present in android development section, are they the same for the T-989D Canadian version? Flashing them would work? I'm pretty sure that if something can be flashed on T989 (T-Mobile), it can be flashed on T989D (Telus/Koodo). I understand that the are just some small differences wrt access to download mode and recovery. See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2079776

I have a T989D on Koodo which I've been messing with quite extensively, and yeah, everything is basically the same. The download/recovery mode linked above is the only major difference.
One thing of note, if you end up messing up the device and need to fully reflash from Odin, the t-mobile stock may not work. I tried over and over to recover from what was essentially a brick (ultra, ultra slow) and it just stayed that slow, even though it did seem to boot and connect and everything. It was totally unusable, however.
I found a different one that did work however, I can't seem to find the post anymore but I'm sure you'll be able to get it if you need it, there seem to be others out there with the same name, but not quite the same filesize. That shouldn't really matter as you'll doubtless go back to a custom rom anyway, the point is just to get you back to something that works.
For reference, the name of the one that worked for me is "SGH-T989_UVLH1_Stock_Odex_zipaligned_signed.zip" and it's 422 MB. This post seems to have a Koodo stock zip as well as the T-mobile one, it's about 100MB less but again, that really shouldn't matter so long as it's Koodo.
Hopefully you'll never need to use it, but I just wanted to let you know that even if you have to recover and some files don't seem to be working, keep trying, because the correct ones are out there! Just may need to search a bit for 'em

A few more things SGH-T989D owners may want to be aware of:
1) This is an excellent resource: [ROM][Stock]T989UVLI4 (4.0.4) ♛ T989DTLLE4 (4.0.3) ♛ T989DTLLG2[ODIN][TWRP/CWM]
2) You might want to search and replace all "T989" with "T989D" in build.prop
" " replace all "TLLG2" with whatever radio your new ROM is using.
If you're on Koodo you might want to assign that to the ro.carrier property
3) If you've got a data plan with you might want to search the web for your carrier's apn info and insert it into "Settings|Wireless & networks|Mobile networks"
Note: This stuff is optional in the sense that your stuff is probably going to work if you don't make these changes. I haven't always updated all this after switching to a new custom rom, but I did notice that I showed up on the Telus network as a T989 as opposed to a T989D on the Koodo network. Really they're the same network but ... I don't know. Maybe I just over think things... I do like the fact that when I plug my phone into the computer or go to the play store or whatever that my phone reports as what it actually is and what radio it uses etc. I don't really care that much as long as my stuff works and I have access to apps that are appropriate for the hardware I'm using. YMMV.
Note2: Most of this info can be gleaned from your stock rom's "CSC" folder and build.prop file. When I have a little more time I'll write this up so its more understandable for those new to flashing Roms. Just wanted to mention that there are a few other tiny, nearly insignificant differences btw the T989 and T989D so that the OP and/or others can address these points if they choose to. At least not be surprised if it looks as though they're using data on a network with a different phone.
Note3: Maybe the only thing that matters is an imei number from your SIM. I don't really know. Be glad to be "told" by anyone that knows. I just know that these things are different even if they don't make a bit of difference in practice.
Re:Koodo SGH-T989D
Hello I'm new to posting on the forums, sorry If I've missed the answer to this question already!
I have a Koodo SGH-T989D that I got in September, before that I was using a non smart flip phone . So I'm quite new to this whole rom business, but even android/ smart phone os in general.
I've been able to flash many roms in the past couple months and have a good understanding of what it is i'm doing. Never had an issue I couldnt fix myself actually, so I've never made an account.
This latest problem has me puzzled though, I've totally lost data connection on my s2x while using any radio. I use SGH-T989D_TLLG2_Koodo_radio but I tried UVLI4 just to see.
However I did change a few things up from my usual routine to flash 4.2.1
1: changed twrp to 2.4.1.0 from 2.2 cwm flashable zip
2: moved all my zips to sd card and formatted internal memory(to eliminate possible issues)
Before this I was using twrp 2.2 and only doing a clean install, not formatting internal sd without any issues or instability.
I've been on [4.2.1 | 4.2.2] AOKP :: jb-mr1 :: build 3 and very impressed with it, except this one issue.
In the thread there is a post that refers to getting data working with koodo, so I think its an apn/proxy setting. I just am not sure where I would have to change these settings.
Just restored a recent nandroid backup and everything works fine.
Can anyone help me out, any insight or tips would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Hope that solves it for you.
Re:Koodo SGH-T989D
Thank you so much, worked right away!
The reason I didnt just look up koodo apn settings is because I had no idea what they were.
And Until now I've never had an issue.
Is this something to do with aokp 4.2 or is it because I formatted my internal storage?
Since mid December I've tried out about 5 or 6 roms just to see how they compared to stock. And all I have to say is wow!
Thank you to all those who make this possible, it really is a great community.
I was on stock koodo rom and unrooted until december because my charge port stopped working after like 3 months...? So I went looking for info and I was brought here, haven't looked back since.
When to check for proper apn info?

Ususally associated with radio upgrades; but rather than get too particular, its good practice to check the apn info after any ROM upgrade. If you think about it, any of the hercules upgrades are going to be the same across the board for any given update. Where they're different is where we want to pay particular attention. In this case, carrier specific information.
Hello
I have an international version of the HTC one m8, specifically the ones in Asia. Before rooting and/or applying a custom rom, I used to have 4G capabilities but now the phone just refuses to connect to the 4G network. My 3G works fine with normal speeds as per before, I have applied a custon rom and a kernel and I am s-off so I couldn't have tempered with the radio. Please help as this is affecting me and wasting the capabilities of such an amazing phone.
thanks in advance

I think you mean you are s-on. If you were s-off, that would mean you can tamper with the radio partition.
In any case, flashing a ROM or kernel won't "typically" affect LTE. But certain ROMs don't play well with some networks as reported by some folks (Euro ROMs + US AT&T network is the one example I can think of).
But before we get needlessly complex, did you check your APN?

The rom was flashed was the international version that I got from the xda thread. Other than the 4G problem, the phone works fine and as mentioned my 3G still works fine.

You might flash another ROM to see if it has any effect on LTE. I'm also guessing that returning to the stock ROM for your version will also get LTE back.

Is there no way for me to keep my current rom and perhaps edit or flash some form of file. If I were to switch a rom it would really be a pain to transfer all of my data too, would you recommend any apps or procedures. Im currently using titanium backup only. Thanks for the help too.

I don't actually now exactly what is causing you to have lost LTE, so therefore its impossible to know specifically what to edit or change.

Couple thoughts/suggestions:
1) If you flash a ROM of the same "base" (i.e. Lollipop Sense) you might be able to get away with a "dirty flash" meaning you keep user data, and just wipe cache and Dalvik before you flash. But if you run into some random issues, you may need to wipe user data.
2) You can make a nandroid in TWRP of your current setup. Than if you try a new ROM and it doesn't help the LTE issue, you can just restore the nandroid and revert to where you are now, with all the same user data.
3) To migrate data between ROMs, I just use Titanium Backup myself (with the Pro key to enable batch functions). Everyone's setup is different. But for me, I keep my contacts and email on Gmail. Than I just backup my apps, app data, and text messages on Titanium. So when moving to a new ROM (after wiping user data) I batch restore apps with Titanium, and just manually setup the home screens and Settings. Takes me maybe 20-30 minutes tops. May take folks longer if they have a lot of customized settings (lots of WiFi networks, Bluetooth devices, etc.) but I think even some of those things can be backed up by various methods, as well.
Wiping user data is basically just a necessary evil if you want to flash ROMs with any degree of frequency, IMO. Its nice when you can dirty flash, but I never outright count on it.
Hi all,
I have an LS980 that I am trying to get to work for T-Mobile and have a few questions. I know the phone is capable of this feat, as I did it once, and have no recollection of what we did. It has since been flashed to stock.
I am basing a lot of what I'm trying off of this article, since it is basically what I'm trying to achieve.
I am able to flash the LS980 to stock as outlined in this article.
However, at 94% progress it says it is waiting 120 seconds for a reboot. At this point the phone reboots into the OS and seems to stop communicating with the LGFlashTool, so I never end up at 100%, though the Phone seems to be running. Not sure if this matters.
I am able to use IORoot successfully as well (verified with Root Checker
If I try using AutoRec to install TWRP, I can typically boot into recovery once, but after that one time, I enter a boot loop, and am unable to get into the system. I have been able to get into Recovery, but if I flash a rom, or try to just access the Stock system at this point, I enter a boot loop, or occasionally I boot to a black screen. In this situation, I have just ended up flashing to stock again.
My Questions:
I want to use the LS980 on Tmobile. It seems possible if I tweak the radio, the APN, prop builder, and a variety of other things. Alternatively, it seems like I could just flash a Tmobile ROM . If I flash a T-Mobile ROM , would I still need to go through all the system changes to make the phone work on T-Mobile's network, or is that sort of 'baked' into the ROM already?
Should I be concerned that while flashing to stock, it never hits 100%, even though it leaves me in the system? I have tried looking into it, but haven't really found any info on the matter.
Others who have used the LS980 on T-Mobile, did you opt to tweak the stock image settings, or go with a ROM? What was your reasoning? (ROM seems way easier overall, but curious none the less).
Once I have chosen Stock with settings changed, or T-Mobile ROM, what specifically needs to happen to get the phone access to the T-Mobile network? I have a SIM card from my other T-Mobile phone that fits the LS980, but I'm not certain what beyond putting the SIM into the phone needs to happen? (I don't swap phones enough to remember this). I'm sure there's a 'let me google that for you' coming my way on this one, but if there is, I just can't figure out the right way to ask the question.
I appreciate everyone's help with this.
I did end up getting this to work, and will be writing out the specifics to my task in detail in a bit so hopefully it can help someone later. But I thought I'd answer the questions I had with the answers I came across.

I ended up getting it to work off just the stock image. I still don't have a definitive answer if a T-MOBILE rom would need tweaked or not (I can't get ROMs to work... different issue).

I got everything working despite the restore only showing as getting to 94%. I can't say for sure if there are some unknown issues with not hitting 100%, but thus far it seems like all is well.

Since I was keeping the same phone number, I was able to just take the SIM from my current active phone, and put it in the LS980. All of the stuff I read about activating SIM cards etc only applied if you were switching SIM cards for reasons such as to change phone numbers, or if you didn't have one that fit the phone you were moving to.
