How to use LS980 with T-Mobile ? - Sprint LG G2

Hi all,
I have an LS980 that I am trying to get to work for T-Mobile and have a few questions. I know the phone is capable of this feat, as I did it once, and have no recollection of what we did. It has since been flashed to stock.
I am basing a lot of what I'm trying off of this article, since it is basically what I'm trying to achieve.
I am able to flash the LS980 to stock as outlined in this article.
However, at 94% progress it says it is waiting 120 seconds for a reboot. At this point the phone reboots into the OS and seems to stop communicating with the LGFlashTool, so I never end up at 100%, though the Phone seems to be running. Not sure if this matters.
I am able to use IORoot successfully as well (verified with Root Checker
If I try using AutoRec to install TWRP, I can typically boot into recovery once, but after that one time, I enter a boot loop, and am unable to get into the system. I have been able to get into Recovery, but if I flash a rom, or try to just access the Stock system at this point, I enter a boot loop, or occasionally I boot to a black screen. In this situation, I have just ended up flashing to stock again.
My Questions:
I want to use the LS980 on Tmobile. It seems possible if I tweak the radio, the APN, prop builder, and a variety of other things. Alternatively, it seems like I could just flash a Tmobile ROM . If I flash a T-Mobile ROM , would I still need to go through all the system changes to make the phone work on T-Mobile's network, or is that sort of 'baked' into the ROM already?
Should I be concerned that while flashing to stock, it never hits 100%, even though it leaves me in the system? I have tried looking into it, but haven't really found any info on the matter.
Others who have used the LS980 on T-Mobile, did you opt to tweak the stock image settings, or go with a ROM? What was your reasoning? (ROM seems way easier overall, but curious none the less).
Once I have chosen Stock with settings changed, or T-Mobile ROM, what specifically needs to happen to get the phone access to the T-Mobile network? I have a SIM card from my other T-Mobile phone that fits the LS980, but I'm not certain what beyond putting the SIM into the phone needs to happen? (I don't swap phones enough to remember this). I'm sure there's a 'let me google that for you' coming my way on this one, but if there is, I just can't figure out the right way to ask the question.
I appreciate everyone's help with this.

I did end up getting this to work, and will be writing out the specifics to my task in detail in a bit so hopefully it can help someone later. But I thought I'd answer the questions I had with the answers I came across.

I ended up getting it to work off just the stock image. I still don't have a definitive answer if a T-MOBILE rom would need tweaked or not (I can't get ROMs to work... different issue).

I got everything working despite the restore only showing as getting to 94%. I can't say for sure if there are some unknown issues with not hitting 100%, but thus far it seems like all is well.

Since I was keeping the same phone number, I was able to just take the SIM from my current active phone, and put it in the LS980. All of the stuff I read about activating SIM cards etc only applied if you were switching SIM cards for reasons such as to change phone numbers, or if you didn't have one that fit the phone you were moving to.

[Q] HTC Evo 4g on MetroPCS, Few Questions and help

Tomorrow I am planning on flashing my HTC Evo to MetroPCS.
I have a few questions, as this is my first android phone.
1. What exactly is happening when I "flash" the Evo to MetroPCS?
2. My Evo is running 2.2 right now, when "flashed" to MetroPCS would I be able to update from 2.2 to 2.3 (Gingerbread) later?
3. What exactly are roms and rooting? When I have my phone flashed is someone "rooting" my phone?
Thank you in advanced
P.S. I do understand when I flash my phone to Metro I will lose 3g and 4g functionality.
Hi there,
I'm a bit of a newbie myself, so to try to answer your questions without being wrong...
1. When you "flash" your phone, it refers to replacing the ROM on your phone. The ROM on your phone is basically a copy of your phone's OS (in this case, Android). Don't be too confused over the ROM part, as even though ROM stands for "Read Only Memory," you can still make changes to it (weird eh?)
2. That will depend on if someone actually makes a MetroPCS 2.3 update. The thing with flashing is that you can put on any ROM you want, by just overwriting the old one. It just requires someone to make the ROM. Most developers package updates for their ROMs so you can sometimes just put on the newer ROM, flash that and be up and running quickly.
3. As I mentioned before, ROMs are basically a copy of your phone's OS that someone might have customized. (Feel free to correct me guys,) In the Android OS way, you flash your ROM onto your phone. An unmodified copy is maintained on the phone, while another copy is made where your phone actually modifies it and changes it as you use the phone and store data. If something goes bad, no problem. Phone takes a copy of the unmodified ROM and copies that over the "put OS to be used here" chunk of your memory.
TL;DR? ROMs are the software on your phone, but can be modified.
3a. Rooting is different then flashing though, although it's commonly associated with each other. Rooting is when you modify your Android OS so you can have write access to other parts of the OS. All those apps that were stuck on your phone and you never liked? With rooting, you can pull those right out. Rooting allows you to pretty much do more things with your phone that you couldn't do before. It doesn't sound like too much, having write access to everything. But there are plenty of things you can do to your phone with write access. One of those things actually is flashing other ROMs to your phone. You actually need to root your phone as it is, so you can install what's called a custom recovery and a developer bootloader. Anyways, I'm not going to go through too much. Just check out the Evo Development area and there will be plenty to read through.
Hopefully I've explained enough. My apologies for the long post, I have a tendency to be through Let me know if you require clarification. Cheers!

Although one more question, when I have my phone "flashed" to install another ROM; do I require root access?
P.S. Rooting sounds like a great idea, I wanted to get rid of all those useless sprint apps.
EDIT: Just realized you did answer my question in 3a, so when someone is flashing my phone to MetroPCS tomorrow that means someone is rooting my phone and installing a ROM that is compatible with MetroPCS? Is my phone more than likely going to remain rooted?
Hmm, I didn't know MetroPCS flashes the Evo now...yay!
Anyhow, I'm going to guess MetroPCS will have their own ROM or will install a custom ROM from somewhere. The key thing really is to have them insert your ESN into their database. Afterwards, you can flash whatever you want on it. I remember it used to be a problem too, for people wanting to switch to MetroPCS. Developers had the software and everything, but the only way to activate it is to convince a service rep to add your ESN into the MetroPCS device database. Now that it's official, it's much easier.
I'm mentioning all of this because if they are officially flashing Evos now, I would think they would have a special in-house ROM that has already been tested and vetted. The issue here is that it's probably a locked (non-rooted) ROM. From the point of view of a service carrier, distributing rooted ROMs might cause higher complaints from users who screw up or from reliability issues. Anyways, good luck getting it flash. Let me know how it goes...

I'd imagine that to activate a phone with MetroPCS they'd need your ESN, I'll be asking the REP tomorrow. Chances are they are not using an In-House rom, because simply flashing the phone through Houdini gives the phone Talk and Text. But for a little more money under the table they add everything else, not that I can't do it myself. But I'd prefer someone who's done it before do it before I do. Either way I'll be asking quite a bit of questions tomorrow to the REP and I will let you know how it goes.
I have to give a little clarity here.
1.) "Flashing" your phone is not replacing a rom. Or anything to do with a rom. Flashing your phone is changing the service your phone uses to make phone calls. e.g. Flashing to metro. When you flash your phone you are essentially telling your phone to use MetroPCS's towers instead of sprints.
2.) If you flash your phone you DO lose the data functionality. BUT there is a solution. If you take your flashed evo to the right person they can unlock the data on the phone and it will work just like it would on Sprint. (craigslist is full of ppl who can do it for a price.)
3.) "Rooting". Rooting your phone makes you the "SuperUser". Basically its like "Jailbreaking" if you know what that means. Either way it makes you like an administrator for your phone. Rooting gives you full control over the phones inner workings. Therefore you can install what we call "ROMS". On the flip side this means you can easily BRICK your phone if your not careful. Rooting is only for those who know what they are doing. So do your homework before attempting.
4.) As far as if the phone can receive updates like Gingerbread after you flash it? I don't know. I would like to find out myself. The question is hard to call for me because you still have access to the android marketplace after you flash it. But you are not on Sprints network any longer. So hopefully someone here can answer that for us both.
Glad to be of assistance.
Tony.

[SOLVED] A pre-rooted Dinc: Upgrade Questions

So I have what may be an obvious question, but it's not one which I have run into before. (my previous device was a Droid 2 which used a fairly generic boot loader)
I got my phone used off Ebay about 3 weeks ago. When I did, I assumed it was a stock Dinc, and so collected everything that I would need to mod it. Low and behold when it arrived and I charged it up, it had already been rooted, S-offed, and had CWM on it (the auction had not mentioned it being a rooted phone) So it took a sum total of five minutes to flash a new rom in.
Now, on further digging around, I find it has an old radio on it, (2.15.00.07.28) and also still has the old owner's phone number in it. Now, a few forum posts I have read in the past few weeks have indicated that installing a newer radio rom may improve some of the functions such as the light metering of the camera... but I have also seen that doing so may bork the S-off as this is stored in the radio rom?
What effect would it have if I put a radio rom on this already rooted and now rommed phone (Albinoman's JBb3). Should I just do it, or should I return the phone to totally stock prior to upgrading the radio software? And also, is there a way to erase the old owner's phone number from the My Phone Number field since this is now a wifi-only device and i'd rather the OS not send that info out when it's not correct.
Or am I just completely off base and don't need to worry about the radio at all?
Thanks for any help in advance!
You dont have to return to stock to flash the radio.
With radios I think it depends on your area. One radio that works great for someone may be terrible for someone else. The general consensus is that updated/newer software would improve the experience but I think with radios it varies. If you do change the radio make a backup and check the md5. Latest dinc radio is in my SIG.

Changing your radio will not mess up s-off or anything else as long as you check the md5 and take the proper precautions. Also changing the radio will not help the camera or anything else besides your cell signal.
S-off is stored deeper than the radio, but tools like unrevoked use certain versions of radios to gain access to this setting and modify it.
No need to revert to stock, and there is NEVER a need to go s-on unless your selling the phone or sending it to HTC. I see so many people say they went s-on to fix some kind of issue, or to upgrade and then the phone messes up durring the proccess and it makes it much harder to fix.
You can remove the number by accessing epst. Dial ##778# hit edit mode and type six zeros as the password. Go to each menu option editing the info you dont want there. Replace numbers with an equal ammountvof zeros (147-237-9900 = 000-000-0000) When done hit menu and commit changes.
You can get all the different radios here. http://dinc.does-it.net/Radios/

Thanks for the answers, that filled in a lot of blanks for me I Figured I didn't need to go S-on, but I didn't know if, like on my old Droid 2, there were certain situations where I'd have to revert to stock before flashing.
UPDATE, I flashed the radio yesterday to 2.15 with no problems. Got a tiny bump in my battery (which tells me the old radio was working harder than it had to)
##778# didn't work for me though, instead it rang up "welcome to verizon" and wanted me to wait to talk to an operator about placing my call.
also tried without the third hash, also tried ##3424 and ##775... all with variations on the same result; either my phone is not in service, or my phone number is inactive... none of them accessed the menu system.
::edit::
I also tried variations on #program# and #data# with no luck, and tried turning off all the radios I could get at.
Any further ideas or steps I may be missing would be greatly appreciated. I also put in an ask over on the rom forum.

Have you tried *#*#data#*#* or *#*#program#*#*
Yeah, tried those as well... but got my answer, apparently only Sense-based Roms can use ESPT, and since I'm running Albinoman's JB rom, no go for me unless I flash over to a sense-rom, make the changes, then flash back. Might be a project for tomorrow while the laundry is going... or perhaps I'll wait for beta four of the JB Rom, flash to sense, do the tweak, then flash to the new beta.
but I'm getting there. in the last week I have inserted new kernels, new radios, And troubleshot this problem, plus dialed in my Nova interface tighter and tighter, in addition to the font toying and so on I've been doing. who knows, sooner or later I might even try to compile something.
thanks for the assist though. Is much appreciated.
well, at the end of the day, I never did get EPST working. I tried several different sense roms, tried installing the APK and pushing it from ADK, the closest I got was to punch in ##788# and it would say "loading requested resource" and then, nothing.
so now I'm on to Release Candidate #2 of Albinoman's 4.1 Rom and will come back to the phone number issue later.

[Q] Is my i927 partly-unlocked? (wanna update to ICS, hence asking)

Well, first things first...
I am a noob, and this is the first time I am using an android phone (moving from the Nokia N97 and Nokia C6). So please be patient (and tolerant).
The dealer I got this phone from wasnt sure if it was soft-unlocked (the ones which get locked if you update OS) or otherwise, and he most certainly didnt have (or give me) the unlock code.
The phone has been a delight for the past 3 months, and I love the the stunned look on the faces of everyone around, when I slide open the keyboard!! However, after doing a google search I discovered that there's an ICS update for the i927. And that has resulted in me googling to find out the likelyhood that my phone will re-lock to ATT.
To my surprise (or inability), I couldnt find a definite answer/guide as to what users of unlocked i927s, who do not have the unlock code, should do exactly, to "safely" update to ICS.
I have downloaded most of the tools (Odin 3.07, EFS 2.0.7 and the "I927UCLJ3_I927ATTLJ3_ATT" stock from samfirmware). And I had KIES and the drivers installed from day 1.
But the problem is that I dont have a road-map. Or a troubleshooting guide, in case I encounter unanticipated errors/crashes.
The other thing is uncertainty about the phone getting "re-locked". Some mobile repair guys say I should flash the update with my eyes closed (it wont re-lock to ATT, they say). However, the other side disuades me, and I have yet to find an across-the-counter shop which will give me an unlock code.
Of course, I think I can live without the update if I have to. But, I was hoping for a bit of help (or a step-by-step or link-by-link guide).
The other thing I want to know is whether flashing the ATT ICS update can also corrupt my IMEI details (and hence the need to back up with EFS)??
Finally, I would like mention that my phone is an un-rooted i927 (ATT) running Android 2.3.6.
Any help would be really be appreciated.
Not sure what to make of this..
The lack of replies has made me (even more) doubtful if a noob like me would be able to update my i927. I hope someone can tell me if my i927 is "updateable" or is the ICS update preferably for only the "authentic" i927 handsets??

If you have a SIM card from something not using the AT&T network, put it in. That will tell you if your phone is SIM unlocked or not (I think that's what you're asking).
In theory, applying the ICS update may re-lock your phone; it depends on how it was SIM unlocked in the first place.
My recommendation is:
1) Update to ICS (it's worlds better than GB)
2) If the phone re-locks to AT&T, then just buy and unlock code for a few dollars

I am already using a local SIM card on the phone (Airtel) since the day I bought the phone. All the features are working on the phone, except the WiFi tethering, which is also the biggest reason for my doubts (and reluctance) about flashing the ICS update. The WiFi tethering feature does not recognise my Airtel data connection (2G), making me to believe some features are still AT&T specific (like the ringtones feature).
The other thing is, re-locking is a significant concern, but its not the biggest concern (for me). Since I first visited the "Captivate Glide" section on this forum, I have read about problems like the IMEI number (or other important phone data) corrupting, bricking my phone (which I know no one in the world can guarantee against), or the phone getting stuck in the start up mode (read it somewhere here, although I dont know if it was an OS update related failure).
Anyways, I hope that clears up the current status of my i927, and thanks for replying.
A bit more help please...
I know I asking basic noob questions about updating, but I was hoping for a bit more guidance actually...
Like what do I do with the I927UCLJ3_I927ATTLJ3_ATT.zip file?? Do I unzip it, or just copy it the phone memory and reboot into Odin??
The other thing is I started the EFS app on my PC and connected my phone to it, but the IMEI and other numbers are just all 0s. So, I am thinking, I did something wrong there as well...
I am well aware that no one in the world can guarantee against bricking a phone. I just want to have a proper guide on how to update, so that I have the best odds possible

1. It seems you're trying to upgrade your Glide via Odin. Unzip the zip, get all the files, put them in Odin folder (NOT the SD card, Odin is a PC-based tool) in the forums to proceed.
EDIT: Google is man's best friend. This is the Odin guide I followed when just a week ago I'm still new to my Glide: http://androidromupdate.com/2012/11/10/i927uclj3-new-ics-4-0-4-for-samsung-sgh-i927-captivate-glide/
2. Your EFS may already be dead Or I don't know, never used that tool before.

Okay I'll still advice you use the efs tool to. Back up your efs foder, then put your phone in download mode, using Odin flash the stock ICS ROM when its through flash any of the recovery through Odin again then allow the phone to reboot. you can now flash any of the ROMs I prefer the lite ROM anyways.
Good luck.

Another carrier's rom on Sprint Note 4

Ive done a lot of reading in regards to this. almost every place I read says other roms should flash on device not of those carriers. reason im investigating this is because CM for sprint has all the sms issues. and after reading through all the tmo roms im not seeing anyone mention sms issues. every time I try to flash another carriers rom it reads that they are carrier specific and fail. is there a way I can make another carriers rom flash to sprint. my device is unlocked, though im using a sprint sim for lte and from what im reading also, its just a matter of an apn setting for sprint, and/or a radio flash for sprint. anyways, comments?

I wouldn't flash another carriers roms. it can make your phone brick and just a paper weight. other carriers have different settings and files that our phone doesn't..i don't know how to explain it better but I don't recommend it

That is kind of unfortunate if that's the case that SMS doesn't work right out of the gate on Sprint CM ROM's then. While I have gotten used to it, it does get annoying after a while having to reconfigure using the *#*#4636#*#* method every time.
I have tried to flash a few other carrier based ROMs via TWRP but they typically fail anyways (which is probably a good thing). I don't think I've ever actually successfully flashed another carrier based ROM through TWRP.

You can't just flash a tmobile rom on this device. It sounds like to me you need to get your phone unlocked to use tmobile sim. I would suggest http://www.idoneapps.com to sim unlock your phone.
I have no idea what you mean by password screen. What firmware are you on? How did you root your phone? Did you turn off reactivation lock?
I can try to help you but i need to know more detail of your problem. And do understand I'm limited on time i spend here. I'll check back when i can.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-sprint/development/steps-to-install-dr-ketans-rom-g-t3379659 This will help u install N910G roms.. i tried. M6 version of Ketan rom. Working food, but am not on sprint.

Have unlock code, still says invalid sim

hi everybody
Friend of mine gave me this phone with the unlock code.
The phone keeps going to the hands-free activation screen ( which fails of course because it's either got no sim or a T-Mobile SIM in there)
Someone said it said enter double hashtag and then the msl code followed by hashtag
That just takes me to a screen where I can enter the "NAM info" T-Mobile's nearly worthless support told me to put my phone number into both the mdn and msid fields. Obviously this didn't work.
I tried the double hashtags 72786 hashtag to reset the radios, no joy. But before it should no signal at all any of the time where is now it does seem to have a connection to Sprint.
I found other sites that said that I need to enter the UICC unlock code, tapping that option or update PRL or pretty much anything else on that settings screen, just kicks open the hands-free activation screen again, before I did the step above to reset the radio I kept getting a 407 error.
Something that's probably complicating this whole process is that this phone did have a custom ROM on it and still has TWRP on it. The custom rom was wiped and I grabbed the Android 6.0 debloated stock ROM from on here and installed that to get this thing unlocked.
I'm open to trying custom roms but I need one that's going to be as stable as stock.
I would appreciate any help you guys could provide I've wasted probably about six hours on Google already. I got a lot of what appears to be pretty low-level information off of the hands-free activation menu though I've posted those photos.

One thing I find curious as you can see in one of the images that says that the Linux version is 4.0.4. But the ROM is definitely a 6.0. I'm an IT guy but I'm pretty novice when it comes to cell phones, is this something to do with the kernal?
I've been trying to download Dr ketan mod but while there's instructions for the p varient, there's no ROM download for the P version of the note 4 on his site.

I can't really help you but I can give you some info.
For 1, to unlock it correctly, you should be on stock firmware. You use Odin for that. There are plenty threads here that explain how.
2. Even if you do go stock. I've seen multiple people that can't unlock this phone, even with sprint help. It's like they don't care.
But yes, I've always heard what unlocks the phone is the uicc unlock code. But good luck getting it or getting it to work.
3. I wasted a week trying to figure out unlocking my phone. Not because of $, just wanted to try to figure it out. But i said, F#&k it. And paid Idone apps to unlock mine. Worked flawless!
Good luck!
As far as roms. There are plenty that work great.

Looks like I broke the second half for the quote mechanism, sorry when u load up Odin, will it find the stock round that's supposed to be on this phone? Cuz I got what I thought was a closest to it.
The phone still has trwp recovery on it tho, and it knows it's custom.
I got the msl code, seems to work. My fear is that the problem is on the phone and not the carrier end.
How would a non stock ROM impact this process assuming that everything was kosher on the carrier end?

I don't understand. Does your phone work with service? Did it ever have service? If it had service and now it don't, then you did something.
All i meant. Is if your trying to unlock your phone. It's best from stock.
