ok well i just made up this list a while ago to help someone out, and have ended up giving it to quite a few ppl now, so i figured i might as well post it here under an appropriate title for all to easily see and access.
i know dharvey wrote a great tutorial, and that there are prob others, but..what the heck. plus this is pretty quick and easy, though i cant say that it is as full and thought out and great as dharvey4651's (thx man!)...
IMPORTANT!!! ONLY SPRINT users follow below steps 5 and 8-11!! Altell users can follow all the steps except step 5 as long as they use a different ppst.exe, not the one mentioned below.
"#1- Backup all pim info and anything else you might want.
#2- Ensure you are currently running your carriers original official oem rom (os and radio) (if you have never flashed it at all then dont worry youre good to go).
#3- Unlock using imcokemans 2.31 unlocker (this for gps roms)
#4- run the sprint leaked rom.exe (here, close to the bottom where it says "original rom")
#5- SPRINT ONLY:allow all customizations to complete and run (i know - it takes a lil while)
#6- flash to desired rom.
#7- after she's all booted up, hard-reset.
#8- download and run cab from here (altell users run your own ppst stuff on the same post, non-sprint and non-altell users SKIP TO STEP 12): http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showpost.php?p=282955&postcount=139
#9- allow soft-rest.
#10- navigate to \windows folder and run ppst.exe
#11- allow soft reset.
#12- allow boot-up, customize, restore pim info etc...

didnt use unlocker
I just ran the leaked ROM upgrade. It found my phone and flashed it. I never ran any of the SPL unlockers. Should I be worried about not being able to unlock later, or have trouble flashing an 'Official' release?

hey nope you'll be just fine, assuming that you arent going to flash to a custom rom. what is your current spl? you just will not be able to flash a custom rom until you unlock.

HI i have been reading alot on this new rom, will this work on bell and also is there a way to "backup" the current bell rom so that way we can "undo" what we have done to get back to original in case we ever need to? thanks again for everyones hard work.
hi all .....im newbie...using htc touch 2nd gen.... how to unlock the gps in my fon???
Hi All. I just recieved my touch last week and like the phone alot. I have flshed my old phone ( old I-mate PDA) a few times with files from here and it worked great.
But with the Touch you guys are talking about different kinds of touch phones. Where do I check what kind do I have. I am from South Africa and use MTN as my SP.
Will I be able to use the GPS ( Seen it in other threads)
Thank you for your help

im....not really sure. being on a different continent i dont think it would work the same, unless you were able to find a separate radio only rom for your carrier, in which case you could flash whatever rom you wanted (w/o letting the cusomizations run on first boot), then flash your carriers os only rom, then be good to go!

new PPST direct link
This post should be a sticky!!!!
This works perfectly except for the fact that the link to ppcgeeks on #8 is busted. What is missing from that link is the file for ppst.exe. I beat my brains in trying to get the stupid gps to work before I finally realized what was missing from my install.
Here is the PPST file from sprint that you do in fact need to make the gps work great. I lock onto the gps sats in about 15 seconds, in my house, to about 9 of em.

flashing cmda phone different from gsm?
Hi All,
I just got my new sprint vogue to replace my t-mobile wizard. I flashed my wizard extensively over the past 2 years but I'm not sure about the Vogue. How does a cmda phone retain its network settings and network contact info if it is flashed when theres no sim card? I'm not talking about PIM info but the info the phone uses to identify itself and communicate with the network.
thanks
Lotus
This worked great. It was my first time flashing and following these instructions everything worked out well and I get locked into satellites with the gps very fast. Thank you.
i have a couple questions. 1st is i have a sprint touch flashed to cricket if i were to install this rom will all my cricket settings stay intact or will i have to reflash to cricket? 2nd does this rom include WM6.1 along with gps, and rev. A?
thanks for any help.

i must say that im not exactly sure how. but i can say that...it just does. if you flash a different radio rom...then you can be in trouble if it is not for your carrier. but we are discussing os only roms here and the network settings are therefore not really affected
and ps for you too, dont allow any files named "ppst.exe" to be run, unless you are sure they are for your carrier

ok so..no specific rom is being discussed here. this is just a how-to for what/e rom you want.
and no you should not have to re-flash to cricket as long as you only flash an os-only rom, a rom that does not have a radio included, and you never allow any files named "ppst.exe" to be executed.
but most all the roms that you can flash using these instructions do have 6.1 with gps and rev a yes

HELP: when i try to load the v3[1].02.rar it asks for a password?????
if i use spb backup to restore in the last step, will that screw things up, since it reinstalls programs, etc as well????

OK, I'm thinking about putting in the new rom so that I can utilize the A2DP.
Before doing that, I was wondering if some of you can answer a few questions for me:
1). I know that after loading the new rom, it's like a hard reset where you loose all your data. Can I use backup software like SPB Backup to bring the programs and info that I have back to the Universal with the new rom?
2). Which would be considered the best rom update right now?
I have the Qtek 9000 with Boot 1.0, with it's original rom (1.13.64WWE with 1.03 Radio). I'm thinking of going with the Qtek 13077 176 rom for the A2DP features.
3). Is there anything else that I need to look into besides backing up data and software that I need to be worried about on the Universal?
This will be a first for me. I'm a rom-upgrade virgin. So please be gentle with me.
Thanks.
Love to know all that too.. that said I am running headlong into updating my T-mobile with the UNI_DT_WWE_13077_176_10900_Ship.zip version.
Already updated the bootloader to 1.1
So far things are good..
Charles
Opps.. that wasnt teh right country.. DE
Trying UNI_QTEK_13077_176_10900_WWE.exe
Country error on that one too.. So going with. SInce my MDA Pro was a UK phone.
UNI_ORUK_13090_174_10300_WWE_Ship.exe
The country error thing is actually checking for more than country, or really not country at all, it checks for provider. My TmobNL flashed the TmobUK without problems, but not any of the other providers' roms. You need to get the three appropriate nbf files from the rom update package (either by unpacking with winrar/winzip or by copying them out of the temp directory from under its nose, while it's telling you it won't work), put them into a directory with MaUpgradeUt_NoID.exe (from ftp://xda:[email protected]/BlueAngel/Tools/MaUpgradeUt_noID.zip ), and run that file. The picture won't be a universal, but one of the other HTC phones, but it should still work.
Disclaimer: It seems to work for me, but if you screw up your device, I ain't taking responsibility for it.
Yea.. thanks I figured that out after hitting the right search. I installed the QTEK version and all seems well.. Other than the fact I cant get Tmobile US to unlock the damn thing. Trying to go through T-mobile UK.. but have my doubts.
If I had known of the Unlocking probems I may not have gotten it yet and waited.. But its so damn cool, I am glad I do have it. Just got to figure out how to unlock it.

You might end up with your universal totally dead. Do it on your own risk.

Sprite backup's latest version (5.1 just released) allows you to restore AFTER a ROM upgrade. Visit their web site for the information. I'm gonna give it a try tomorrow

Sounds cool! Looking forward to hearing your finding with the new version.

Thanks for all the responses.
Here's my input:
1). Went ahead and installed the new ROM.
2). Worked great except for a few kinks (not sure if it's the ROM or me)
3). No...SPB Backup will not restore apps into new rom. Had to do everything from scratch. Don't have Sprite Backup. Do tell if you have.
4). Bought the Motorola HT820 and A2DP worked great (except for some scratchy noises when PDA is on belt and I'm standing upright - not unbearable).
5). Luckily I had everything backed up and finally got myself a instruction sheet on how to reinstall all my apps again.
6). Install of ROM went without a hitch...though I held my breath for close to half hour - praying - please don't brick! Be warned....it might.
7). Only thing needed to test is the idea of having 2 Bluetooth Headset devices connect to the Universal on the new ROM and see if they work. Why? One for caller ID and another one for stereo headset. No need to open clamshell to view who's calling (as soon as Jetset get their software to show names and voice dialing working properly).
FYI, the device I had was a QTEK and my install went smoothly. I cannot and will not be responsible for anybody "bricking" their Universal just because mine went smoothly.
Thanks again for everybody who chimed in.
Mel
modem man---where did you get the upgrade ??
where did you get the down load ? what ver#'s is it i have the qtek also
My Qtek is:
Qtek9000
Bootloader: 1.00
Upgraded from 1.13.64WWE with 1.03 Radio ROM to UNI_QTEK_13077_176_10900_WWE ROM.
New ROM has A2DP and AKU2.
For the ROM, follow the following instructions:
1). From the XDA-Developers Forum page, top left corner, select wiki.xda-develoeprs.com
2). Look for HTC Pocket Phones Title and select Universal
3). Scroll down until you see "Detailed Instruction On How To Upgrade with Bootloader method" and select it
4). There you'll see a link to the rom download link (in #1 instruction).
WARNING!
- Your Qtek 9000 may or may not work after the ROM install. You are doing this on your own risk.
- Your data will not be available anymore after the new ROM install (if it works). There are forum discussions that state that Sprite Backup will allow a backup restore even after a ROM update but I haven't tested it yet and will not vouch that it will.
- If you have a heart condition and you have to worry about money, I would advise you to reconsider updating your ROM. Your heart might not be able to handle the stress.
Please read the following forum sites to understand a little more about it:
A warning that needs to be read:

General instructions on the update - might be a little outdated but still good info:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=45874
A computer crash situation:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=49266
WARNING - I cannot stress enough on the fact that your Universal might be a brick if the install did not go well.
OK.
On the positive side....with A2DP, I love the fact that I can listen to streaming radio via Bluetooth Stereo Headsets.
And the Universal does run a little faster (IMO).
hello all, i am trying to load the S621 rogers rom into my tmobile Dash. this will be my first attempt in doing this and yes i am a noob. im trying out the DIY post on this forum on flashing any rom into the dash. i am well aware of the mishaps that could happen (bricking my phone). i hear the s621 rom is much faster than the standard wm6 rom that comes with the dash from tmobile. i am tired of the constant reboots and i would like to try this rom out. my only problem is i cant seem to find anywhere where the rom is available for download. i tryed the rogers website, but everytime i click the link it gives me an error. i am hoping that some1 is willing to help this noob out and host the rom for me or atleast direct me to where i can download it. i have tryed various torrents sites and i have come up empty handed. i have also tryed seaching in the forum and everything seem to point back to the rogers website. i have tryed the HoFo forum and same. please help. any info will be appreciated as to where i can d/l this rom. thanks for ur time.

Couple of questions about changing ROMs
please indulge a NOObie to the change process..
Situation...
I have a TMobile Dash that I upgraded to the official WM6 from TMo. It is SIM unlocked direct from TMo (traveling overseas and asked them to provide unlock codes - they complied).
Now the Questions...
1) If I change the ROM to Rogers WM6, will I lose SIM unlock?
2) Is the Rogers ROM that much better than the TMo one? (posts I've read indicate its the best one out there for WM6)
3) Can anyone tell me what functionailty I will lose moving to the Rogers ROM? (I've heard voice command, but what about long press keys provide "alt functionality", etc??)
Thanks so much in advance if someone could starigten me out here..

as a fello n00bert my self.. i switched from tmob wm6 to the rogers and i find the rogers much worth it than the tmob rom..
as for ur questions..
1)i dont think u would lose SIM lock b/c ur messing with the CID and not with the SIM and hopefully u still have the SIM unlock code tmo provided so that should unlock ur phone if it becomes locked (that if u flash it with jockyw2001's progs)
2)to me its worth it.. i havent restarted my phone for 2 days and i still have 15K+ KB in memory
3)no u wont lose the "long press key" function but then again there will be a shortage of progs that came standard with tmo wm6 like the OZ IM is not available on the rogers rom and the voice commands but u do have voice tags... plus u will have to reconfig the settings to tmos network..
hope this helps and for any false info i may have given.. sorry but thats how ive seen it and how i know of it from my own experience

dude u gotta be more clear.. u say u have tmo wm6 or the rogers? cuz from wat i understood was u have tmo then rogers and now u trying to flash a rogers over a rogers.. but as to flashing the rom follow the steps in this thread. the first post... for me it worked like a charm.. flashed my fone in under 15 mins on the first try.. but i do warn.. READ CAREFULLY.. to me thats the most important thing that every1 under estimates.. read the instructions carefully and u should have a successful flash..
as far as the OZ IM im not sure if u can get it back.. maybe some 1 can provide u with the files from a Tmobile rom for it to work. or u can try a 3rd party program like agile or IM+.. me personally i dont like the OZ IM so i use ebuddy.com or a program called SLICK.. and with the rogers rom in order to sync to a computer u will need active sync 4.5 i believe. u should be able to download it directly form microsoft website for free(thats wat i did)
hope this helps
So does the Rogers Rom also have the VOIP already installed or do you still need to follow the instructions in the other post to re-add the VOIP function? This would be the deciding point on if I need to switch from the TMobile ROM to Rogers!

well im guessing active sync is active sync.. but u still need to get past the CID lock which u would have to pay to get unlocked according to your fones IMEI or you can use the the process jockeyw2001 posted with his program and the sda unlocker which is the way i did it to my dash..
this is the link and the process i used which in 15 mins after CAREFUL READING got me the rogers rom into my tmobile dash:

Vista uses an update to Activesync called Device Center. It provides the same service as Activesync.
This is a newbie question and I may not have searched correctly but...
I am currently using a T-Mobile Dash that has been uprgaded to T-Mobile's WM6 Rom that was offered on their website. It originally had a previous version.
If I follow the instruction to flash the device with the Roger's Rom, and I end up missing functionality, can I simply follow the instructions again and re-flash the T-Mobile WM6 Rom upgrade on top of the Roger's Rom? I want to make sure I can go back if needed before I go through the process!
I also have my unlock code from T-Mobile because I travel overseas so if I needed to go back to T-Mobile's Rom once I flash it over to Roger's Rom, will I need to re-apply the unlock code?

yes u can flash back to the tmobile rom
I previously updated my Dash to the Rogers ROM but now I am going back due to a number of issues I've encountered. The biggest being the constant locking after I applied the App unlock and the AllowCertificate. Also, when I received calls, the call would cancel if I had another person on the line. Anyone else have these problems? I also could not take my calls off hold if they were placed on hold.

lol if you're a smart kid you wouldve flashed to a custom rom with m2D on it.
Jk. I've had that problem before where i couldnt add programs to the "launcher page" of manilla as well as having issues adding favorite people to the peoples tab.
I would try 1 of 2 things.
1) try a different version of manilla 2d for example if you used version 21 try version 20.
2) BUT i would highly reccommend using a custom rom with manilla 2d. Why? first off we have great chefs (people on this forum who make great roms). They optimize the rom (or basically the operating system for your phone to run more efficiently --> FASTER)
I would suggest NFSFAN who makes vogue roms. He also added other mods that are featured in the touch pro and touch diamond. Cant go into detail here but if you need help flashing to a custom rom you can pm me

1) You should upgrade your radio --> maybe 3.42.30
honestly the easiest way is to use this utility from htc. This upgrades your htc touch to the newer windows mobile 6.1 with GPS enabled and Rev A for faster data downloads. http://www.htc.com/us/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=76&act=sd&cat=all By doing this it will upgrade your radio. But note: this is not the only way to upgrade radio its the simplest way for newbies 2) You need to unlock your phone
This is the Unlockerhttp://rapidshare.com/files/113951076/Vogue_unlocker_MFG_2.31.exeIf you need instructions here is where i got it. Just read we all had to read to figure it out. http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=203703) After doing that you can finally install a custom rom.
I suggest this one. Here is a very good and stable WM 6.1 Rom with Manilla 2D aka Touchflo 2D incorporated in this rom/os made by NFSFAN: http://74.53.45.2/%7Eevadmin/nfsfan/Public%20Releases/Sprint/NFSFAN%27s%201.12%20Sprint%20ROM.rarThere are 2 ways of flashing your phone...actually any windows mobile phone for that matter. 1) Flashing by your micro SD card or 2) flashing through your computer via USB cord
Flashing Through microSD card
I Personally Like this method because it works 100%. The usb method sometimes has errors with active sync connection. Basically you download the rom (provided above) and thers a file called RUU_signed.nbh For the Sd card method you have to copy that to the root of your microSD card and rename it to VOGUIMG.nbh. Please note that you shouldve unlocked your phone by now and you shouldve backed up everything from you fone/sd card to your pc because everything will be deleted. Now after the VOGUIMG.nbh is on the root of the SD card, you now press and hold the power button on your phone AND press and hold the camera button on your phone at the same time --> keep holding it and then insert your stylus into the reset button. KEEP holding it until you get a 3 color screen red blue green. ANd follow the onscreen instructions.
Flashing via USB cord
If you flash by this method, with the rom provided above, NFSFAN has provided u with a .rar of all the stuff you need to flash. Just unzip/unrar it. In there theres a file called ROMUpdateUtility.exe. open that. Make sure you plug in your phone and have an active sync connection. that program u just opened has onscreen instructions. DO NOT REMOVE YOUR PHONE FROM THE USB CORD AND HOPE YOU DONT HAVE A POWER OUTAGE WHILE DOING THIS BY USB CORD. This method is the easiest way to flash...but easy to me is subjective and it may not be easy for all.
Anyways after its done whether u flashed by sd card or usb cord...it takes a while to start up dont panic. YOu shuold see that screen where u have to align your screen... after that ur phone will perform a customization let that **** run do not cancel.
intimidatorx31 thanks for the amazing guide! If anything, it should be stickied at the top to help all newcomers here. Well done.

By CLARO, are you referring to CLARO SAC, as in CLARO is your cellular carrier/provider?
If CLARO is an app its not one Ive ever heard of for unlocking HTC Vogues and a google search comes up with it being a cellular provider NOT an unlocking software to flash custom ROMs to your phone and the only thing I find close to unlocking a phone and CLARO isnt even for the HTC Vogue but rather a V220.

Unlocking the phone is what allows users to flash a custom ROM onto them other than the locked, standard ROM from the Carrier we buy them from.
So your saying the carrier CLARO has unlocked the phone? can you verify this to be certain, if not check with them regarding flashing of a custom ROM and check out THIS for more information regarding unlocking and relocking your phone for custom ROMs
As far as you being a "foriegn" (at least to me as Im in the US and my experience and understanding of ROMs and Unlocking comes from use on US phones) you may want to double-check your phones state before going to far

thanks alot every1 =D now i know what to do
Im sorry to bother everyone with another thread and yes ive read everything on the internet trying to get this solved.
I have an xv6900 that is obviously on Verizon. I can get the GPS to lock and have tried many things. Instead of going through everything I will tell you what I just did and you can let me know what I did wrong of what I'm missing.
-First my phone is unlocked with coke 2.3.1
-I just flashed the official Verizon 6.1 update to my phone
-I did not allow customizations to run
-I installed NFSFAN's 6.1 ROM and let customizations run
Ok that is all I have done right now and no GPS. I didn't do the aGPS fix yet because it takes a little while and the last time it didn't help.
Here is what im confused about
-With the official Verizon radio but a custom ROM do I need the Valhalla hack?
-Are there any other cabs that I need to get it to work? I have seen various provisioning cabs but none of them helped before.
If you have read this far thank you for taking your time and please let me know if you have any ideas on how I can get this working.
Thank You,
thecaptain0220
This is my understanding
(1) The XV6900 uses the onboard gpsOne chip to gather gps data. Unless you do the programming explained at
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=VerizonAGPSFix
the phone with custom ROMS will never get any gps information.
As near as I can tell the gps settings in the phone's registry have no effect on the XV6900 because the gpsOne chip does the work and it is programmed separate from the phone's ROM.
Mine works with the TELUS settings in the gpsOne programming and I can change the registry every which way and the gps still follows the gpsOne settings.
Hope this helps.
(2) The verizon aGPS server authenticates the caller and if you are not paying for Verizon navigator the server will not send back any data; effectively killing the aGPS ability of the phone.
That is why you see references to the TELUS aGPS settings. This directs the gpsOne chip tou use the TELUS aGPS server, this works as long as TELUS allows it to work.
Thanks for the quick reply.
So if I flashed the official wm 6.1 Verizon update followed by NFSFAN's wm 6.1 ROM what fix should I do? Should I do Custom ROM aGPS, Verizon MR1 GPS, or Verizon MR2 GPS?
I am unclear when people say that Verizon cripples the GPS whether it is done in the Radio or the ROM.
I can flash a new radio too if that is what needs to be done. I wanted to keep the Verizon radio so that it said Verizon on start up but if I cant do that its not a big deal.
When you flash the Verizon 5.1 update DO NOT let the customizations run.
When the 'customization in 3 seconds' window comes up reset your phone by pressing the stylus in the hole on the bottom of the phone.
You already have the Verzion radio and do not need any of the programs they are going to install because you are going to flash a custom ROM.
After it resets do the gpsOne programming explained at http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=VerizonAGPSFix. This programs the gpsOne chip in the phone so it can communicate with an aGPS server. Use the TELUS settings for IP and PORT not the VERIZON ones in the Wiki.
TELUS IP = 216.198.139.92
TELUS PORT = 8889
Then load any custom ROM you want. the gpsOne programming is not affected by flashing a ROM to the phone, it will work with what ever one you choose to use.
Did you read this thread and do what it says? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=533639 I did and my XV6900 gps works great now.
I was going to try that but I have heard that downgrading to an older radio is not a good idea. Has anyone done this? Is there a correct procedure to flash back to an older radio?
I think I might have figured out one of my problems but I'm not sure where to go from here. I did allow the customizations to run on the official 6.1 upgrade a while back. I assumed that re flashing the upgrade and not allowing the customizations to run would fix this but I think I'm wrong, could someone confirm this for me? Is flashing back to an older ROM the only way to fix this? If so what steps can I follow to minimize the risk of bricking the phone when downgrading? If this is a totally bad idea someone please say so now.

The fact that you let the customizations run means you are fairly screwed. You can probably get your Gps to work. I would flash a pre-GPS ROM & start over if having a functioning GPS is important to you.
Can someone tell me where I can get a stock carrier release for Verizon?

To fix the problem with the customizations running try these steps. It worked for me and all the links to files are included in the post.

After you flash back and then forward to the newer radio you will need to call Verizon and have them re-authenticate your phone. Just tell them you applied the 6.1 update from 6.0 and they will be glad to help.

If you are talking about a pre-GPS ROM I don't know if you will find one?
If not then here is WM6.1 Stock
http://pcdphones.com/phone_downloads.aspx?bid=95&cid=1&mid=302&carrier=Verizon Wireless
Most people are using GPS, but they still have to prime. I figured out how to not need to prime or launch, and made a thread on how to do it here...

Thank you to everyone who helped me out on this one, I now have aGPS and lock on satellites in a few seconds. I am even getting satellites inside my office where I hardly get cell reception.
For future reference if anyone reads this later here are the steps I used. The problem was definitely that I had let the customizations run.
I followed this link first, Pocket PC WIki:FIX VERIZON GPS
I had no problems at all and I didn't even have to get a new A-key.
Then I followed the Custom ROM Instructions in this link Verizon AGPSFix
IMPORTANT: I also followed VZYGuy's advice and use the following settings instead of the Verizon info in the fix.
TELUS IP = 216.198.139.92
TELUS PORT = 8889
After all this everything is finally working great and im using the Verizon radio with NFSFAN's 6.1 ROM

Great! It's good to know it worked for someone other than me.
This also is the way to fix the XV6900 if it comes new from Verizon with wm6.1 already installed with the 'crippled' GPS drivers.

Yes read that entire thread. I did it and it worked for me.
EDIT: Ah I see you got it to work. Cool. Just for future FYI using the instructions I used, I did not have to do any customization other than 2 registry settings. Was much easier I think.
its a verizon vogue... and its brand new (well 2 weeks old)
i wanted to load nfsfans 6.5 rom... but it was my first time flashing. and being a noob, i used .41 unlocker.coke
i managed to have a verizon rom via sd card but it just boots up to the verizon logo and gets stuck.
any suggestions?
on ppcgeeks, someone said to just flasha rom that is NOT gps capable. is he right?
and could i use a rom from adifferent carrier? (other than verizon)
file i downloaded.
i did a little bit of research. thought it would be possible to have another carrier's rom. so i used this... (dcd's .20 rom)
ftp://up.ppcgeeks.com/Vogue/Users/jim256 - jim2561/dcd_vogue_1.0.4_sprint.exe
it says its been successfully installed. will boot up into my verizon screen. and will stay like that. anyone had any luck getting out of this?
easy fix flash a shipped ROM
hmm.
i looked on ppcgeeks in the shipped rom subsection. no verizon rom there. and i am hesitant to put on a sprint or an alltel rom there.
