Hello,
Has anybody seen the announcement ?
http://www.android.com/kitkat/
The next version of Android 4.4 shall be named KitKat, and it has already its own statue in front of Android building !
What are your thoughts on this ? After the Nokia thing, mobile world has gone nuts today

It seems that Key Lime Pie was not the favorite dessert for Google.
It's our goal with Android KitKat to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody.

So basically they say: We want to make sure Android has an amazing experience on all devices.
AKA: Performance optimization, less RAM usage by system, faster app loading. At least, that's what I guess
so, what are the odds of the Gnex getting this? even with the possible performance optimization.
Does the fact Google didn't jump a full version number bode well for us nexus folk?

if I get this correctly, Google is working on something that would be available for all, or at least for the majority of devices? How can this possibly take place? Is Google trying to establish one version of its own OS for all, same as the iOS goes for all iphones, and then evolve that? Maybe with some small code changes for different type of phones? Kinda confusing statement but I guess its good news. Boy, I can see how the upcoming update will put XDA forums on fire. And definately this is going live by the end of this year.
PS: Judging by the name Google must have paid a great amount of money as using a name/brand of chocolate that popular is a great deal.
Android 4.4 should use Google's 4.8 toolchain! :good:
where is the OTA ?!?
That's the next question for the next days
And mad props for google in breaking the main news of the day.
Microsoft: "Hey, we bought nokia for € 5Mi"
Media: "Who cares, we have a new android to cover"

apparently, google went to nestle (or who ever makes KitKats) and they reached a "no money changed hands" deal in 24 hours.
its a good deal for both IMO.
google would have to pay for the kitKat name, KitKat gets free advertising, everyone is happy with no money.
I think google just wanted the name, and it happened to work out that KitKat was OK with that and happy for the advertising.
i would personally never buy a KitKat, but now that i have a chance to win something android, i am going to be buying up the stores
I wouldn't put much stock into the "available to everybody" phrase on the KitKat Android page.
The closest we've had is the slow trickle of apps being unpaired from the system core and launched on Google Play instead.
That's assuming we're even talking about software, that line is so vague it could mean anything (and possibly nothing, just marketing talk due to the 1 billion device activations).
for me what matters is "an amazing Android experience", I think something about a better user interface probably
in my opinion it's still not sure if we get it or not
Ps: on the bottom of the page it says: "Sign up to learn more when we launch the release", so it's not going to launch soon..1-2 months?
Pps: http://kitkat.com/ website is down, too much visits probably, they are having a break

That website is interesting. I know they are playing with the idea of the KitKat having a whole phone spec thing. But I wonder how much of that could be little hints to what is coming with android. We all know how Google likes to tease and play with our minds.

I was recently chatting with one of our mods and this is what he had to say:
Owning a nexus is a responsibility. Once you own a Nexus, you own the right to speak for the Android ecosystem as a whole. It all becomes as you put it because you are the high priest of a sacred religion, the source.
It is from this that your prime responsibility emerges as well- you have to help every android user if you know you can, even if you don't want to. Whether they think that their phone is better and cooler or not, whether you look like a friendless and deprived idiot or a desperate nerd.
I know this sounds silly philosophical to you, alluding to a very "brotherhood" vicinity as far as concepts go, but what matters is the result we get from such a mindset- something more open, something more google, forward and responsive, something that iOS kidos cant even think in the lines of.
It is the reason I am ensuring that nexus discussions are sincere, friendly and constructive and everyone trying to derail this process is going to find a tough time.
Its also the reason I am talking to BigG to make nexus devices always niche, so that every nexus owner feels a sense of purpose to the eco system, silently knowing he has what matters most in the android ecosystem

Further in the conversation he went forth outlining how Google can achieve this, compact version of which is:
1. FULL play store access (not restricted by country or device)
2. Closer relationship with google devs
3. Working with manufacturers to get flashable ported versions of their UX leaving a nexus user with more options than others
4. World phone as a standard
5. Permanent discounts on most play content
Do you agree? What are your thoughts?

Google now is pretty straight foward and its actually my first time using it and I'm already liking it. What can I expect as time goes on from it?
You can expect it to start learning from you. For example, after a while it can give you traffic data to home right before you leave work/school on a consistent schedule
Sent from my Nexus S using xda app-developers app
Yep and if you check in at your fav burger joint or strip club :cyclops:, GN can tell you the traffic, if any to get to that destination. Also you can also get your fav sports team scores, local stuff happening in your area, even notifying you when a package was sent. I love the integration of google keep as well. Awesomsauce all around IMO.
You can expect to get traffic and weather notifications for every single place you Google, sometimes weeks later. But nothing for important meetings on your calendar unto 45 too late.

I have keep as well. How does it integrate itself with keep?
I think Google Now is the only thing keeping me on Android. It's just become TOO useful when I was doing things like checking Maps on my desktop and finding that a card would be added to my Now list, giving directions and ETA if I were to leave right away.
I'm definitely enjoying the way it's implemented, and it's become a tool I can't imagine using a smartphone without anymore.
I have a card for the Yankees, but it hasn't appeared yet. There is a game on right now and I can search it but it doesn't show the card yet. When should I expect it to pop up

Tasker, sl4a... depends how geeky you want to be. With sl4a people have controlled robots and stuff. Tasker has a little learning curve and it's limited only by imagination. There are several other automaton apps out there but Tasker is regarded as the most robust. You can even create standalone apps from within Tasker to sell on the play store if you were so motivated.

This design is good for the elderly and hard to see people. Kind of like the Big Launcher.

+1 many times on the previous version. When turning pages, icons seem way too big.
Someone on Google has an increased visual prescription :silly:
I don't care for it very much. Seems like a more childish version of the store, were as the previous version seemed more mature and had a nicer style to it.
I really hope this isn't what to expect for key lime pie

I just went through every layout available with hybrid properties in Paranoid Android and I couldn't find one I don't hate.

I don't like it. Looks like the play store lost it edge. It's to big, to immature looking, and if it could display all my previous purchases that would be great.
I think the previous purchases are there. Just that the icons are 1000x bigger.
It's horrible for reasons mentioned. I tried it in a early release and quickly switched back to my modded version. Just look for modded versions and find one that doesn't auto update. I imagine they will become more popular soon enough. It was such a bad choice that I hope that dept or designer gets fired. What a sh!theaded move...

Or hit by a bus. It is complete and utter crap. You'd think they'd have learned from seeing Microsoft suffer with Win 8. Don't make massive UI changes that people can't opt out of. Yes I know you can access the desktop in W8, but you need Classic Shell or other stuff to get a proper start menu.

Yup... Same reason why I'm stickin with my Win7/Linux setup for a couple of more years. I was kinda excited initially but got turned off the more and more they released hints and sneak peaks for 8. I haveven considered a iMac. I helped purchase and setup one for my in-laws. Yup they're old and technologically inept lol! I wanted to sandbox them without worrying about too many viruses. Last model winxp they had (too cheap to run decent antivirus) drove me insane. My dad (graphics artist) has been preaching the praises of apple for years (way before iPod was a twinkle in Steve Job's brain) and has one also. I have to admit it is pretty nice for some things but is still too limited IMHO. Thinking about EVER owning an Apple product makes me cringe no offense cause some of em are great products just too hipster and limited in capacity.
Back to Playstore (still think the name change was stupid)... Maybe they could make it have different file views like file explore r or multiple views based on DPI a compromise next UI overhaul. I wonder sometimes if Google is making poor choices the more mature Android gets. Over simplifying things just because of the fact that a few critics claim Android is too complicated isn't a great thing. Sometimes things get more confusing and lose fuctionality in the process of simplification. Thank goodness this just a isolated case with playstore and maybe a couple of things for now. It could be way worse. Android is still the greatest mobile player around but they better continue to listen to the little guy and developers especially on the eve of Ubuntu Mobile which could take a piece of the pie.
im very happy with it they removed the dumb ass page after installing / updating apps :good:
The store seems to be going downhill ever since they renamed it from Google Market to Play Store.
it doesnt bother me. It looks much better inverted though. . I wish Google would bring back the purchased tab

Nothing to do with the ZL - this should be in the Android General forum.
Beak me off a piece of that KitKat bar yo!
In all seriousness, all we know is a name so far. There are rumors under the key lime pie codename but that's it. We won't be seeing an official ROM from Sony on the ZL until Q4 2014 or even H1 2015. We will be lucky if we have 4.3 officially by the end of the year.
Saying all that. The version numbers aren't very important now that Google has separated most of their services from their OS. In a way that is very good because we get most of the latest features that gets rolled out with the various gapps updates without having to wait for the features to be updated with the ROM.
Since I like to rock it stock, I am looking forward to an official 4.3 release for our phone to have native TRIM support.

Google hit a point where there's no more innovation. It used to be every time an Android update hit, massive sweeping changes were implemented that completely changed the experience. Now, we're lucky if it's smoother or better battery life.
I keep hoping they will announce 5.0, but even then I have to wonder exactly what they would have as a feature to make you go "WOW!"

I don't see the problem with the cross promotion. It came out of a Google engineer's genuine enjoyment of the confection that resulted in a friendly promotional deal that benefited both parties without money changing hands. This is a rarity in business.
Source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-23926938
As for innovation, I don't think we will see anything major for a little while. The core experience had made a huge leap with the introduction of Android 4.0. Google has been introducing small changes that, as a user, I wouldn't have known about if I didn't keep up with tech news. For the most part, technical changes to the OS can really be mostly appreciated by the developers and those of use that care about technical details. Most users are given updates and innovations in the form of updated Google apps and services which Google has been separating from the underlying OS. In the cases where we don't like things that Google provides, we have the great developers here who help us make the most of what we want; the way we want it. ArsTechnica did a pretty good writeup if you want to read it.

It's still business, and Nestle benefits from it greatly. Nestle are a company with a very, very dirty history and if I wanted to support them, I'd buy their products - which I don't. Ever. This deal gives free advertising to them and their products and if I want the latest version of Android, I do not have a choice but to buy into that. If the Google engineer enjoys that confection, he should go out and buy a ton of it with his salary and that should be the end of it having anything to do with Android.

The latest OTA is version 11.2.8.8.LE15AA, I think that one in the screenshot is the full version download preceding the latest OTA updates, but IDK for sure lol
Edit - my default kernel was built on Jul 8 2021, and android security date/level is 7/1/21 ... HTH
I read about OnePlus getting new people to make a team to work on Open Beta for 9/9Pro.
I like that!
New team is not something to like. It might be good but also be a disaster. Questions should be asked like WHY????? are they getting a new team? What happened to all the revenue they made and how are they using it? Who is controlling the company, One Plus or the Chinese government? Why the delay to begin with. I realized DP1 was developers preview and not beta but why not allow Google updates for DP 2 and three. Who cares that Oxygen was not on it yet. Now that stability been reached with Beta, let's us Early Adopters adopt. I refuse to buy a Google Pixel love my one plus but was so excited that it allowed BL to be unlocked but I feel let down by OP. Perhaps my expectations were unrealistic to begin with

This update is from June. (end of the month)
There's an update (11.2.8.8) from July. (end of month)
So, following this logic, this week OnePlus might release a new one.

I'd be more worried if the US government was running it like apple with the new back door.

Lol US government and Chinese as well because even though apple says they are all American blah blah but they are manufactured in China as well. Just all marketing etc
People get married, have kids, no more time to spend on Android. Priorities change.

I also think not only priorities of people's lives but also Android itself and the huge slowdown of phone evolution. Actual since smartphone sales slowed companies like apple and Google created smart watches to help increase revenues. They first used the old nostalgic movies like knight rider or James bond to sell them even though Smart watches cannot do anything close to what the movies portrayed. You can make flippable phones but you won't see hologram s coming out of your phone. I know we love to always think of our technology being limitless but that dam law of physics keeps getting in the way. So now they will start with AR glasses with WebView capabilities. And when that fails, which it will because who wants a HUD I'm their line of sight. In 30 years we will events have implants and chips that will help the brain and technology link. Isn't it Neurolink that exists now. That technology is decades away. Because again we do not know how the body/brain will react and now I'm having flashback from the movie Black Mirror.

Ain't no updates that can save this POS.
the support update page is only updated from time to time, it does not repesent the actual stage of the software.
At this point 11.2.8.8 is up 2 date. OnePlus updates bi-monthly.

Get a life.. go buy an iphone or something and quit trolling
There's closed beta testing so maybe devs are focusing to it. Sad to see no fix for Gmail notification bug...

I think the gmail app just sux. I've experienced the late notifications across quite a few devices personally.
Oxygen sucks because of google. The more google on it the more bad Oxygen will be.
Also the King of Bloatware, samsung already gets Androis 12.
And OnePlus release 9R or something...
They are starting the ultimate consolidation of Oxygen OS into Color OS. How is OnePlus going to manage all these phones? Do they even have enough staff to manage all these phones?
Unfortunately they only update bi-monthly.
I saw a user suggest on their official forums basically say "hey guys, how about monthly updates like your competition?" in a friendly way, and a mod basically said **** off and closed the thread. I wasn't impressed.
This was my first OnePlus device, maybe my last.
That 12 Beta debacle was ridiculous.
After having the 7, 8, & 9 Pro, I will be leaving the building as well!
Is this a joke? About month last update and now ppl are think this is over. How do u even can survive this life?
I like how people actually think theres a decent alternative to oneplus these days. At least not in the US. Maybe google if the pixel 6 is actually premium/flagship this time. Otherwise theres no other brand with an unlockable bootloader, which is how they get away with so much bloat. Personally im fine of oneplus becomes a little more like the others as long as the hardware is premium and the bootloader is unlockable.
9 Pro is my first and last phone from OP if they can't get they BS sorted out. The phone has horrible battery life, scrolling issues, and it doesn't get better with next updates. Also, wtf is that BS with the bi-monthly update scheudle? A device like this should be fixed ASAP, the users are experiencing problems and neet to wait, the hell is that policy? Would they wait 2 months to release an update if someone would find a security bug too? So stupid. Get your **** together OnePlus.
