Wifi issues - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

On my n7 with some roms or kernels my wifi connects with a reboot as soon as I use any data it shows connected still but I have zero connectivity until I reboot again, and anything else on the network via wifi slows to a crawl.
I posted in the n7 thread when it started and never got any responses and now my s3 with some rom/kernels is doing the same thing.
The wireless router is a dsl router combo from century link, I have updated the firmware and called them but they say they have never seen or heard of this issue.
Any thoughts or inputs? On the n7 it's always the rom or kernels I get the best performance and battery life that seem to have this problem, of course. Also should note, the open network at work doesn't have this issue.

JB 4.1.x wifi range/signal (GSM GNex)

Hi,
I've been using JB since the version from io12 was out. Currently I use Bigxie's deodexed 4.1.1 and all is wonderful. Except one thing that is. The wifi signal is weaker than I'm used to from ICS. Especially the wifi range seems worse. Connections that I've used with ICS are now out of range. Some of my friend or family's connections are now very weak and I drop out of range very often. This goes for any JB rom/kernel I've tried.
I've tried several roms, trinity and franco kernels, dirty flashing, full wipe. I've even tried a couple of different basebands, even though I don't think they affect wifi.
So I'm wondering if other GSM GNex users are experiencing the same thing? I've seen a thread with a flashable "poor wifi fix" for the Verizon GNex, but nothing for the GSM version.

Ok, allow me to explain whats going on with the "fix".
There were some folks who ported the GSM version to Verizon (myself included). However, they failed to use the correct wifi/BT firmware (I did but thats besides the point). They left in the GSM version. So that above fix is merely the bcm4330.hcd firmware and bcmhd.cal calibration file for wifi/BT from 4.0.4 for Verizon. It is not meant to be used for GSM and only applies to those who ported GSM to CDMA. Even with the fix, wifi is weak.
Verizon users currently have a newer version now, specifically for them from Google. However, the weak wifi issue still exists even for us. There are some who have strong wifi routers or are always close to them that do not see the issue, but it does exist for every JB user. Wifi is simply weaker, and BT is fairly janky.
It is a Jellybean specific problem, and I am assuming it will be fixed in time. You could try a 4.0.4 bcm4330.hcd, bcmhd.cal on Jellybean, but I doubt it will help, and it could end up hurting. I am thinking that broadcomm needs to fix these files.

The more I think about it, the more I think it can probably be resolved by tweaking the calibration file. However that is a bit beyond my abilities as I don't understand whats contained in it to know what it needs tweaking to.

I'm not sure why it does this but when I am in my house about 15 feet away from my router I would notice my wifi signal dropping down to 2 bars where my other phone would stay at full strength until I got around 15 yards away.. I decided to see how far I could get away from my router before completely losing signal. I walked a total of about of 30 yards from my router to the edge of my street and stopped every time the signal decreased down to one bar(which was between every 5 or 10 yards)... every time I thought the signal was about to drop out it would return back up to 3 bars after a moment of adjusting. Once I got to my furthest point it dropped out completely and then came back to 1 bar. When I came back inside where I previously had 2 bars I then had full signal throughout the house. I tested this a couple times and it seems that it only uses what it needs. If someone could do a similar experiment to confirm this isn't specific to my router set up I would appreciate it. I also did not notice any drop off in performance in speed from 1 bar to full signal while I was within 20 yards of my router, however, I didn't run a speed test, I just used my youtube app to load a video... I will run some speed test when I get home this evening to get a solid figure on the speed difference. This may not be a bug but a feature to conserve energy to increase battery life.

A good theory, but I am dropping wifi in some of my rooms. Switching to and fro like that doesn't save power
didnt people have poor performance with their wifi signal on ics? did broadcom leave everything the same of did they change/update drivers for our phones with jb.

Me too, I only need to move to the next room or so sometimes. The main problem for me is range. The range for me was better with 4.0.x.

ICS wifi performance on the GNex wasn't exactly perfect for me, but it was better than what I get with JB. My router at home is giving me an okay performance and range, but the routers I normally connect to at family and friends are giving me problems since I moved on to JB.
I believe JB does come with new drivers. At least I've read that it does, in other threads.

Wi-Fi has been fine for me, but only when using 2.4GHz—5GHz, on the other hand, is horribly broken. If you are using 5GHz, I recommend trying 2.4GHz instead—hopefully Google will have this sorted before the Galaxy Nexus II ships.
you may want to revert back to ICS to verify if the phone hardware is not a problem? otherwise for me I have used both... ICS and JB, and I don't find any difference..

I’ve found 5GHz to be broken on both ICS and JB and this is with more than one phone.

5 Ghz was fine for me on ICS. It works on JB too, but the range...ugh.
I'm pretty sure it's not hardware related. It's definitely related to JB. It's not a 5 GHz problem either, that's what I use at home on my d-link. Family and friends have both 5 and 2.4 GHz. I'm sure it depends on the quality of the routers also but I didn't have any real range problems with any of them before JB.

2.4 is pretty weak for me too.
I looked at the calibration file from ICS to JB. I don't think the difference warrants the problems seen.
From ICS to JB, these are the changes:

If I don't miss remember upon upgrade to JB on my yakyu device, my GN experiences a very low signal from any wifi APs, testing with different android devices from friends, my GN measures the weakest wifi signal of them all, is this a problem with the device itself, had anyone experience anything similar?

For me, the measured signal _seems_ to be worse then on ICS (it shows less bars). Would need to check with WiFi Analyzer or similiar but TBH, I didn't notice connectivity problems compared to ICS.
I do here, and the problem as I see it is not the wifi signal/power itself is the quality/sensitivity on the GN receiver, since other devices measures at least one or two bars where mine don't.
And to this date, I keep noticing more and more problems in the JB GN, shouldn't the so-called Google flagship device have more updates/corrections/support from google itself? I'm starting to regret having bought this device.

Not everyone has this issue. My WiFi signal strength, connection quality, connection stability, and speeds all remained the same on 4.1.1.

Is something wrong with my WiFi?

The other day me and two of my friends were conducting a lil experiment to see which phone had the best wifi download speed using the speedtest.net app, one has the iphone 5 and the other a year old sony xperia phone. We all connected on the same router and when conducting the test they ended up having speeds of 32mbps!! While my phone only managed a measly 15mbps..feeling slighly embarrassed after bragging to them about how my phone is so much better then theirs we did the test again just to make sure it wasnt a fluke thing but nope we got the same results. My question is..is something wrong with my wifi..i mean ive never had a situation where its disconnected but ive noticed that the wifi icon does fluctuate from having full bars to no bars quite alot even if im right next to the router but i havent noticed the performance drop..im just baffled as to how such a amazing phone got beaten by the iphone and a phone thats older then mine with download speeds.

It looks like you have the dreaded Wifi problem. The fluctuation sounds all too familiar to me. Read the topic about this problem in the General section.
Don't worry man.
Forget the wifi issues cause by hardware, it is very rarely and is is very unlucky cases (other comes from user's mind)
For your matter, I have to face the same situation and in my case, I found that the issues comes from channel of the router. Normally, wifi router has many channel could be set with different frequency:
1- 2412 GHz
2- 2417
3- 2422
4- 2427
....
11- 2462
12 - 2467
13 - 2472
14 - 2477 GHz
The HOX work best in Wifi mode G / Channel 14 as I could easily got 54Mb/s. You could try again with other setup of router. Install wifi analyzer app from market and it could help you to find best channel for your HOX.
(remember to update your phone with latest ship rom).

WiFi ridiculous slow now

Suddenly in the last 4 days or so my WiFi on the 5X is incredibly slow. Say if you're downloading an update on the play store or loading a Web page, it will just sit there and try to load. If you give it long enough it will eventually load. It doesn't do this all of the time but seems to be getting worse. I can cut WiFi off and it loads great on lte. My Nexus 6 does fine on WiFi. Anyone else having this problem?

WiFi issues are common with any device, you could find similar threads in every device forum on XDA. Each home network is different with unique routers, different settings, etc. Basic WiFi troubleshooting steps are the best place to start.
Knowing your WiFi is working is a good start but there's probably a setting or incompatibility somewhere causing the slow downs.
Just an FYI for anyone else that might have this problem. I tried everything and no luck. Google is sending me a replacement.

I just recently ditched my galaxy s3 bcoz of the lag, seems like it's better than my new nexus 5x in terms of wifi.
An app from the play store downloaded faster on my s3 than it did on my N 5x.
Out of the box, my 5X was painfully slow on WiFi. Called Google. Tried the usual cast of 'fixes' with no improvement. Google is sending a replacement, but based on my experience with the Nexus 4 (they still haven't fixed the 4's WiFi issues) I am not hopeful. My Nexus 5 works extremely well, so may just keep it for another year or two.

I'm kinda feeling the same way.
Tried forcing the device to 2.4ghz or 5ghz in its WiFi settings?
In the WiFi's advanced menu you can force either 2.4 or 5 ghz. Just tested on mine. 5 ghz got the expected ~20 ms ping with 60 mb download speed. And 2.4 ghz got 600 ms ping with 0.1 mb download. Might be interference here at work because there are 15 Bluetooth devices here. Will have to confirm when I get home.
I tried forcing the various ghz, just made wifi not work at all. My download speeds seem fine but I'm getting virtually no upload speeds. Had a 6P I was trying out and it worked fine.

One of them (2.4Ghz or 5Ghz) may not work if the WiFi network doesn't support that frequency. For instance my aging Wireless G network only supports 2.4Ghz and if I set it to auto I may experience strange WiFi issues, if I set it to 5Ghz it won't work at all.
One of them has to work though or you'd never get any WiFi signal.

That's too bad, WiFi on this phone is twice as fast as the N5. Dual MIMO antennas and double the maximum theoretical bandwidth compared to the N5.

Perhaps I should try another router before giving up on the 5X. I haven't had any issues with the Linksys E4200v2 but one never knows. I'll enable WiFi on the brand-new cable modem and see if it's any better.
Just reviving this thread to see if anyone reached resolution.
I'm seeing consistent 4-6 Mbps downloads on an older 2.5 mixed router. On uploads I see in the 15 Mbps range. Every now and then I'll see downloads in the 20-30 Mbps range.
My laptop on the same router at the same time consistently maxes out at 30 Mbps downloads.
I had identical problems with two 5X's, intermittent & slow wifi, on 2.4G (I don't have a 5G router yet.) My previous Nexus 4's and all other devices worked fine.
BUT, when I upgraded my wireless AP's firmware (it was fairly old) and changed from 40Mhz to 20Mhz band (there is a lot of 2.4G interference in my area) the problems went away completely and it's been solid. I've heard similar stories in other threads about 5X wifi being fixed by router updates.
So try changing to 20Mhz band if you're on 40 now (on 2.4Ghz). Also upgrade your router firmware if it's older.
I'm not making excuses for the phone not working well in this scenario, just saying it made a tremendous difference for me. I wish I had any idea what 'fix' might have been in the firmware updates, but it was like 2+ years worth I skipped over, and it's not documented well. My AP is a Ubiquiti UAP, if anyone has similar.
So I would say to anyone having issues, it's very unlikely your actual phone is bad, but there may be some incompatibility especially with older wifi routers/AP.
Thanks. Tried setting the channel width to 20 mhz w/ no impact. Tried shifting the channel to a less used on and still seeing the same ~4 Mbps download and 11 Mbps upload. I don't get why the download is less than the upload. I had similar issues with a newer router so not sure that's it either...
I saw the exact same, where upload was erratic but generally much faster than download. Unfortunately it's probably not 'new' vs 'old' routers, just some certain feature/algorithm/behavior. Even though it works now for me at home, I have no doubt I'll run into lots of places where I'm on some other wifi and it will degrade horribly again. So although it may be 'solvable', I still consider this a pretty significant issue with the 5X, since most places you have no control over the router.
.... and after about 2 days of good behavior, my 5X is stuck at ~2.75 down, 22 up. So flashing the router only worked temporarily.
It definitely looks like something with backward compatibility with older routers. Nice new 5 ghz router at work and hitting 55 Mbps download speeds. Similar uploads as with my home router. Waiting on a new wireless mesh system for home, so guess I have to deal with it until they ship in Feb.....

Testing WiFi. The "Back-Touch" Issue, and Throughput

I started this thread to see whether this WiFi back touch problem is a universal problem among Oneplus 3 devices. I need feedback from as many people as possible, so please feel free to post your findings.
//EDIT. While we're at it, let's also test throughput in general, as that seems to be a separate issue altogether. Do note that I'm not looking for opinions like "it's good" or "it's bad" but actual results; numbers.//
What is it? Some users have reported that upon touching the upper back of the phone with your bare hands, WiFi speeds are notably reduced. Using a case so you don't touch the back bare handed seems to solve it.
I want to take a scientific approach to this, if I may call it that. This will involve copying files from the phone to a computer over local network, to avoid isp bottlenecks. But first:
1. Make sure you are close to the router, direct line of sight, with full WiFi signal on your phone.
2. Make sure no one else on your local network is bottlenecking your speeds.
3. Get yourself a nice big file on your phone. A single 2GB file or larger sounds good.
4. Get yourself some way to track time.
5. Find a way to copy files over local network. Ftp using ES file Explorer is one method.
The actual test is simple.
1. Copy the file to your computer and record the time it takes to finish the transfer.
2. Divide the size of the file (in MB) by the time (seconds).
3. Repeat this 2 or 3 times while touching the upper back of the phone, and another 2 or 3 times without touching the phone at all.
4. Post your findings, along with your phone model, kernel and rom please.
I made a test pretty close to a router. I created a 2GB file to my server just for this test. (Linux command: fallocate -l 2G wifitest.img)
The copying from ftp server took 67 seconds, no matter how I kept my hands. The speed obviously changes if signal strength drops. Rather than comparing speeds, a signal strength measuring would give more usefull results.
2000MB/67s=29,85MB/s.
My phone is 3003 and rom is rooted OxygenOS 3.24 with default kernel. I would like to see other results as well as I'm wondering what would be the maximum wifi speed for Oneplus 3. (My Galaxy Note 10.1 gets pretty much the same speed results as OP3.) I would like to get a good reason for upgrading my TP-Link Arcer 7 V2.

I will be waiting your results. In the meanwhile I will do some more testing. I tested the phone on the table and it was pretty much the same as the last results. Later on I will do some measurements how grip effects signal strength and speed in a next room or something.
I've noticed that file copying over samba is very slow on all android devices. Speeds are about 4-8MB/s. FTP is much faster. I would like to test NFS protocol on Android. I use it in my Linux network and I have read that it is faster than samba on Android as well. It's just difficult to get it working on android as android kernels usually don't have nfs client build in.

I'd be interested in the distance (through wall) test. There are loads of different stories out there. One guy got 2-5 mbps with just a single wall in between. Others got 300 mbps (faster than your transfer speeds!) one floor apart. I am planning to test this too.
That is one useful piece of info right there. I didn't know about the difference in speed from different transfer protocols. Not exactly the point of this thread, but hell, feel free to post it haha.

OK, I tested my OP3 about 8 meters away from router. In between was one wall with book shelve and in the other room wardrobe between. 5GHz results:
Phone on the bed: 103s. (2000MB/103s=19,4MB/s)

Speedtest.com as you can see. So it's internet. Pretty darn fast. I am on a relatively sad 5 mbps. Although I am content with that speed.
Got my phone back from RMA today. Apparently they've found a faulty motherboard and replaced it. Can't say the problems are solved however, but I have upgraded my internet from 50mbps to 150mbps. I only reach around 1-10mbps. It's better than previously, but considering that it was repaired and that the speed I receive has tripled, I'm not really happy.
Could it be a problem with the router I connect to? It's a Sitecom X5 N600 (one floor below me) that is connected by cable to a Cisco EPC3925 on the ground floor. Speed when connected to the Sitecom router is pretty much the same as when I connect to the Cisco modem which is twice as far away. Both are quite unstable from what I've seen these past minutes.
My Mi2 seems to struggle as well right now, so I think I'm going to keep researching this issue and contact Sitecom.

It sounds like a router issue, especially if the speeds are similar with two different devices. My OP3 and my old Note 3 and Note 10.1 tablet all have a throughput of around 50-70Mbps in 2,4GHz wifi.
I did some throughput testing, 2,4GHz wifi and downloading 1GB file from my ftp server:
Phone on the table: 164s. (1000MB/164s=6,1MB/s) (1 meter away from the router)
The speed seems to bee the same with antenna death grip as well. I will do more testing father away from the router later on.

Unless OnePlus is silly enough to give a faulty unit to the same person twice, I'd say the issue lies elsewhere. Not just that, if different devices have problems, that is a pretty big tell that it is your router at fault here. Not that I know anything about your router though. But to top it all off, the Cisco router performs better? I don't see how it can be anything BUT your router at this point haha.
Btw, if you go far enough, any router (such as your Cisco) will be unstable. Remember,smartphones are smaller devices, meaning have smaller antennas, than other devices such as laptops. You can expect signal to become worse with distance faster with phones than with laptops.
Could you test your internet speeds now, while standing next to your router? Let's see how much of a difference it makes compared to before RMA. And perhaps check again if you got the back-issue described in the OP?

Pretty sure it's an issue with the router at this point. Perhaps it's time for another RMA :silly:
I did some testing with CM based Resurrection Remix rom. The test environment was the same. Phone and router were exactly where they were in my last test with OOS 3.2.4.
1 meter away from the router, 5GHz wifi:
Phone on the table: 2000MB/69s=29MB/s
Phone at fingertips: 2000MB/66s=30,3MB/s
(Didn't test the death grip as I was so close to the router)
8m distance between phone and router:
Phone at fingertips: 2000MB/103s=19,4MB/s
On the bed: 2000MB/328s=6,1MB/s (2,4GHz)
I repeated the test multiple times and phone dropped to 2,4GHz every time during the transfer.
