[Q] Flashed 4.3 ROM - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hi guys I flashed a 4.3 ROM and when I'm going to restore a backup the first time it didn't let me. It gave me a error. I couldn't flash any other ROM. So I Odin. This time when I was going to restore my backup wasn't there.
What might it be?

You need to be more clear when asking for help, help us help you. Were you on a touchwiz rom before flashing a 4.3 rom? Your backup might be gone now if you odin'd back to stock.
Try connecting your phone to a computer and see if you can find you backup, if your back up hasnt been deleted, it will be in a folder with the same name as your recovery (TWRP, CLOCKWORK MOD RECOVERY OR CWM).

Yeah I was on touchwiz. The backup fot deleted before using odin. I connected it hut I didn't find it on the computer neither

Theres the problem. Google changed the file structure in android 4.2.x.
Just type into google "android 0 folder".
Sounds like your backup is gone and you have to basically start over. You should keep an extra copy of any backups you make on an extra sd card or even on your computer.

Lost root and no usb cable

I flashed the most recent TBASGSIII 2.0 ROM. (FF18 stockish tw ROM with agats kernel/recovery).
I was installing my apps setting up my bootanimation and removing garbage and think i removed/disabled the wrong thing.
Programs are acting like they have no root access. Cant quickboot or remount /system. Mobil Odin cant recognize device to flash gb kernel to restore nandroid.
Im visiting with the inlaws and have no usb cable. I have a laptop, wifi, kies, and my E4GT as my only tools for survival.
I have no way to recover from a brick except to reactivate my HTC Hero (epic fail).
My most recent nandroids are all ICS using agats recovery to backup. Im not sure if its safe to restore using even his safe recovery or if that will even fix my issue.
Last things i remember doing before this were flashing a boot animation zip, replacing the boot animation and sound files in system, and disabled a couple apps (talk, task, not sure).

You must have deleted super user
Try flashing su.zip
Also mobile Odin needs root access so you can't use it
But you can use odin

Can u link su.zip or post i can get it from? I cant get xda app to load for some reason.
Superuser app shows binaries are installed, but cant gain root access to update them.
Is it safe to nandroid restore with agats kernel/recovery?

As long as you can still get to CWM this should do the trick for you. Flash it in CWM, reboot your phone, and you should be good to go.

Good luck!
PS - Restoring a nandroid from Agat's recovery is completely safe.
Agats had proven to be safe for me. I have flawlessly backed up and restored using it. Even wiping everything works. Just make sure you don't wipe after you restore if your recovery isn't agat's... YOU WILL BRICK HARD. If you did a nandroid, Agat's should save you.

Thank you all. I did eventually make it home and odined to el28 and restored from there to be sure.
Im glad that agat's kernel is safe for recovering too. Definitely loving the green menu, too

[Q] Data recovery file TOO large.

Hi guys,
So I'm a noob so don't stab me or anything. But I have just rooted/flashed my s3 with frosty jb. I did make a backup of the stock rom. However, when I did the back up I had a HUGE cache from google music, like 1.5 gb. So when I tried to get my data restored it kept failing. I have sifted through some other threads that direct people to unzip the data.tar and then remove some files and rezip it. And I did do this and deleted all of the music cache. Even after I rezipped it, put it back in the backup directory, and redid the whole md5sum it still doesn't work and says failed to restore data. :crying:
Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
Try Mobile Odin.
Search it here on xda for a free version and instructions, or get pro on app store.
I highly reccomend pro.

Does that mean I can use the original 2.4gb data file?
Use a cache cleaning app before backing up. Like App Cache Cleaner (has a free version), or SD Maid.
Actually, Im not sure it will work, but could be worth a shot. With mobile odin it doesn't have to be zipped. Just point to the .img file.
This is a nandroid backup I'm assumin so you will have to restore it using the same recovery as before. Cwm won't restore twrp backups and vice versa. Usually the recovery version won't matter, but if your having problems try restoring with the exact same version you made it with.
When you stripped it down, did you rmtry it without adding the md5 back? Again not sure if it'll work but you could try....

Ok so I did make a nandroid backup using CWM. After I got rid of the files that I didn't need I deleted the md5 and reassigned it using the whole android terminal commands. But now it doesn't fail once it reaches 2gb in the restore process. It just fails to start /data restore.
Try renaming it to data.img and flash in mobile odin (you can find with a quick search)
Or archive it into a .tar and try regular odin. Never tried this so don't know if it'll work or cause issues. It will trip your flash counter with the pc odin method.

Really? That's not a fix; it's not even advice. You're just suggesting he give up and start over. He just made a bad build.prop edit. All he has to do is undo the changes he made via ADB and reboot. It's Android tweaking 101.

If you already wiped. Then yes reflash the rom.
For your knowledge, for next time make a nandroid backup before making any major modding.

Aside from the ADB fix for those who failed to do a nandroid backup, this is the best advice so far. Recovery is your friend. ALWAYS DO A NANDROID BACKUP BEFORE TWEAKING!!

Yeah, take a Nandroid, if you can't at least backup your build.prop dude. Never change it unless it's absolutely necessary.

Odd question for a somewhat noob
So ya I have had the SGS3 T-Mo google wallet hack by editing the build.prop for a while, works great! Today I went to to put the copied original build.prop back into system and renamed edited/hacked one to _build.prop, but it got stuck at Samsung logo at boot. Recovery & Download mode OK. I had a CWM backup from a month ago, I know I should have done a backup up & at least weekly while developing apps, but i have now recovered back to the old one, and man it's old.
What i am looking for is can I can I go and edit/replace the build.prop in a CWM backup? Or push it through ADB in Recovery mode?
Note:
I did try using ADB while in CWM, but phone did not get recognized in ADB, needed phone back, so just recovered last month old backup for now. If I can recover the looped backup, and get ADB to recognize device, then i know I can just push it to the folder, but will ADB work in CWM recovery mode? Never done much ADB in recovery or DL mode.

Sorry i just realized i posted in the wrong forum. Didn't realize this was Note until after post, my bad, sorry

Unable to boot phone from nandroid backup

I recently flashed a 4.2.1 ROM but it had too many bugs so I tried restoring my stock (4.0.3) backup from TWRP but I keep getting caught in a bootloop. I've tried unrooting, rerooting, and trying the whole process over again, and I even remembered to flash the correct kernel after restoring my backup but no matter what I try I get the same result. It can never fully boot up. It continues to just hangs on the white HTC screen. If I'm missing something or doing something wrong can someone please help me out with a possible solution? Thanks

Flesh boot.img
Thank you but I did mention above that I also remembered to flash the kernel (boot.img) after restoring and that didn't do any good either. Any other ideas why this is going on and how I can solve it?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
This happens mostly due to wrong kernel.but as you said you have the right kernel, then try installing some other custom Rom and kernel and extract data/app from nandroid backup using app like apk extractor.

Flash this image afterwards: Search for the file named (boot-TK-USB-CM10-201210112240.img) it will be fine.

Thank you but please note that Some ROMs boot up just fine. The problem is just restoring a backup (stock) if a new ROM didn't work out. It's the same process where my backups work until I install a new ROM and then am unable to restore a backup, leaving me stuck in recovery mode. So I need to know what I can do once in that postion. Why is it that after flashing a new ROM it doesn't let me restore my backup even after flashing the boot.img?? I will try that extraction method and see if that makes some sort of difference but I honestly don't think it'll do anything when it comes to just trying to restore.

[Q] flashing a rom without bricking?

I cant flash a rom and have it work. I have tried several ROMS like aokp, jedi, smooth, jellybeans, etc and they almost always brick. Jedi worked but google services crashed back to back to back to the point where i couldnt even use the phone. does anyone know of a 4.3 rom that works on att sgh-i317?? i basically went down the list on galaxynote2root.com and tried them all but no success.
I have root, have TWRP installed and flash the rom and it bricks. i factory reset first, then install and nothing.
any ideas?
All of the roms on this forum work.. What are your exact steps?

Have they been tried on sgh-i317?
I did these exact steps:
Rooted phone and installed TWRP recovery
put AOKP Rom on SD card and booted into recovery mode
Wiped/Factory reset through recovery
rebooted into recovery
installed AOKP ROM
booted and bricked- hangs at "X" aokp bootup screen
Have you installed gapps after flashing an aosp rom? I am running carbon rom right now... Earlier today I was on aokp. I have used them all and I have a I317. An att note 2

does not having the gapps installed prevent the phone from booting? ive booted a rom before without gapps and it booted.
was there something wrong with my steps? did you use the aokp milestone or nightlies? where did you get the carbon rom? its all good?
I used the latest aokp nightly. And right now I'm running the newest carbon nightly. I got it from the op of the carbon thread.

Download your rom and gapps again using a PC...
Then place the files to your SD using a card adapter if no USB connection is possible...
Then fully wipe the device again from within the latest version of TWRP recovery and flash the new downloads ...
You may have a bad flash ...and you are not bricked...g

I did those exact steps and it did not work. i tried flashing pac man rom the last time and it got stuck in a boot loop too. I think there are some files that are corrupt or some temp files somewhere that are preventing a successful flash. my binary flash count was 9. and that was just on this run, ive tried flashing several times before. each time the only way to recover it is hooking the phone up to a pc and using kies to flash back to stock firmware. this sucks.
What version of twrp are you using? I have never had this issue you are having and I have flashed every rom on this forum for our device.

9 counts ??
Uh....yeh...not right ...
Have you messed with device partitions in ODIN ??
If so...something is definitely wrong ...
At this point ...you may want to consider a full return to stock and allow the PIT to properly restore your partitions..
Just follow the return to stock guide (sticky )...in the general section ..
Once restored to stock with a corrected flash counter you can begin again using CF auto root as your root method..
It sounds as if you have root issues and possible partition damage...
One other step you can try first is to boot into download mode and re-root using CF...
That may help....but certainly won't hurt anything...then attempt a clean flash again..
If it fails ...then the return to stock and rooting again seems prudent ...g

Ok ill try that. When I do the sticky method is that different than using kies to flash to stock? Kies is supposed to wipe everything and reload stock firmware. I agree the partitions are corrupt somewhere

Kies is not the method I use in returning to stock...as I don't trust it..
Odin is my first choice ...
Using Odin to flash a factory rom will wipe everything as well ...and is far more reliable ...IMHO...g

I used the sticky on turning your phone back to stock which used odin. I followed that list perfectly which said to flash stock using odin, root using cf then using triangle away, then super user to fully unroot. Then I installed clockword mod recovery, booted to recovery mode, cleared all cache and davlik and factory reset again, then installed the aokp and it got stuck in a boot loop

Here's what I do with twrp when flashing a rom.
Go to wipe menu and then advanced wipe and select dalvik, cache, data, system and internal(optional). I do it three times to make sure. then flash your rom with gapps (if aosp)
