Short version of the story: Flashed to Dirty Unicorns, the old YouTube app works perfectly fine, where as the new one (with HQ turned on) makes videos look really bad. They look even worse with HQ turned off.

It's less noticeable in still screen caps, but you can still somewhat see what I mean.
Anyone have this issue or know how to fix it? I've not seen a post about this on XDA or Google.

Hi, I experienced the same issue with my S4:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2423699
I wonder how come so few people noticed this.
I have the same problem on a Galaxy S2 Plus running Android 4.2.2. Did you guys found a solution?

I have one reserved to pick up in my local store now but not sure if its worth it when I got a Galaxy S2 and a iPhone 4S.
The screen is what interests me mostly but no idea how better that is compared to the two phones I have and heard about hardly any apps work on ICS yet e.g Facebook and so on.
Anyone who owns one would you say its worth it or stick to the two phones I have?

I cant talk for anyone else but myself in this regard. I have had my GN for about 24 hours now and have to say its the most amazing phone I have ever owned. Colours are rich and vibrant. Camera is fast as hell and yet still manages to focus. 5MP is more than enough for a camera, if I want to take professional shots then I will take my 16MP DSLR out but the majority of shots taken with phones are for social networking sites which resizes and compresses the image anyway so it doesnt matter. Speed is smooth as running a hot knife through butter and pretty much every program that I had running on Gingerbread works on this phone. The Tegra2 optimised games obviously wont work (apart from Guerilla Bob which works great) but I think I have installed about 60 apps and games since yesterday and only 3 or 4 havent worked. Facebook and Skype both work on my phone, even video calling works .
The main problems so far are satnavs (closes or stays black) and video players. I will try a few more satnavs and report back. Video players either stop running or wont install but that will soon be sorted so I have no worrys there.
I havent noticed any of the software problems that people are reporting but with a Nexus you HAVE TO REMEMBER that it is the first phone to have the latest software and its inevitable that there will be a few bugs to start with. Thats what updates are for and they will be ironed out soon enough. Developers will quickly update there apps for compatability with ICS and new apps will be made to enhance this beautiful screen.
If you have any more questions please ask away but I would definitely recommend getting it
Mark.

Well as I have only had the phone a day I cant comment about battery life at all as its been on charge pretty much the whole time. I like to give new phones a good days charge to make sure its maximum benefit from the first charge. Will know more about that after about a week when it starts to settle down into normal life.
The screen IS simply amazing. Its beautifully sharp especially when playing back 720p movies and its got the same coating on as the iphone to resist finger prints so it doesnt get that dirty look as quickly as other phones.

Hi Mark, how is the GPS fix time and accuracy compared to, e.g., your HD2? I've heard Samsung quite suck at the GPS department. Does this barometer sensor really helps improving the GPS fix speed like Google developers explained? Thanks.
Thanks mark that is good to know. I would like to switch my gs2 for nexus. Is nexus as smooth in web browsing and overall as gs2?
Could you mesure gps precision with gps test app?
Thanks.

The screens awesome, much better than the retina display IMO as its bigger with equivalent resolution and much better blacks because of the SAMOLED. Having to post on my sister-in-laws iPad as my nephews playing shadowrun on it and I can't get him off it.
Mark thank you and I took the plunge and picked one up.
Firstly amazing, the screen is mind blowing playing HD videos for a phone. Secondly ICS is miles ahead of Gingerbread. Can't speak highly enough of it experience wise so far.
Google nailed it with ICS.

Many thanks for trying that for me.
I'm starting to get disappointed with the Nexus & I haven't bagged myself one yet.
No FM Radio & No capabilities to use one
No SD Card
Google Search On Every Screen - I Hate It & Never Use It
Looks like there are volume problems

Does this mean the app doesn't support the phones FM chip or is it completely absent?
From reading online, it sounds like the issue may be software related. I'm trying to find if there is more current fix to the issue than an article I saw on andriod authority. Sorry I can't link to it considering new user restrictions.
I can't seem to find any write ups that are more recent than June / July. Hoping there has been progress in this area
I am extremely disappointed that some of the videos recorded at a concert came out with such bad audio. This hurts coming from an iphone
EDIT - referring to HX Camera Mod
Has anyone used this?

Looks like I can't post in that forum and it is unclear whether this change can be applied to an AT&T phone
Anyone?
Are you on stock or custom rom? Also, don't apply any kind of fixes or patches that not meant for i747. You might brick your phone. Also, someone who might have experienced this issue and might got fixed will reply to you as soon as possible. And if you don't see any replies about your issue, chances are people didn't experience on I747 version of Galaxy S3.

Mine is the same... recording in a loud environment ie concert sucks. All distorted.. even with latest firmware.

It's a hardware issue, not a software issue. No Android has ever captured great audio that I've found. Used a Motorola Backflip, Droid, Droid 2, Droid X2, Samsung Captivate, and a HTC Droid Incredible. It's one of the few reasons that I keep my iPhone 4 around for.
Not true... just need to be able to turn Mic sensitivity way down and it records fine... voodoo sound in my sgs I allowed you to do it and got great sound in concerts.

It sounds like Voodoo is for Wolfson Audio chipsets which the US version of the S3 does not have?

That's what I've read so far. But there is another audio tweaker available in the AT&T apps subsection for the S3. It may have the ability to turn down sensitivity. IDK. But the logic behind this idea is sound.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1883317
I'm still waiting to find a video recorder that I can use in place of the stock video recorder. So I can finally get rid of the stock camera without losing the ability to record video.
I read that thread but an audio tweaker is like an equalizer.. don't think it addresses the Mic sensitivity issue.

I finally went on a trip this past weekend and tested the camera extensively. I took lots of 20MP pictures and 1080p videos, all of them outside. The camera keeps losing focus and has a very hard time finding it again. What's the problem? Is there a way to lock the focus or at least adjust it manually? Here is a video I recorded:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M33DArbxBcc&feature=youtu.be
This is really frustrating. At least 1/3 of the pictures I take come out blurry and out of focus, which is weird. I've taken pictures out of a moving car and many of them came out perfectly focused. Some of the other pictures I took without moving at all came out blurry. Videos are almost without exception guaranteed to go in and out of focus. I expected this phone to do better than that and am hoping it's a simple problem that can be solved. What has your experience been? How can you solve this?
P.S. I am using RomAur v1.2.
I have the same problem with stock rom. Focus is really bad. I hope they fix it in an update.
Same problem here with stock rom
Any updates on this issue? (here's another thread with no answers: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2703714)
I took some videos last week and I'm having exactly the same issues using rooted stock 4.4.4. The problem is even worse, if you are filming at night.

Your concern may be right. I didn't do many video testing in 4.4.4 so I can't confirm but I've also a feeling the focus is even slightly worse than 4.4.2 and quality is downed a bit too. The video is not sharp as and detailed because the denoise algorithm is stronger in 4.4.4.
True video lover might better stick with 4.4.2 but for most people they just won't notice it. But 4.4.4 is real improved photo so I think most guys will just go for 4.4.4.
Indeed, video is never real good on mobile, it is not Digital Video Recorder or DSLRs. HTC, Samsung and LG theirs video focus are not good too.
Strange...
I just tested it with my phone (rarely take any videos) and I had no problems with the focus. Even on quick change from near to far it adjusts quickly and does not lose focus.
I have the 4.4.4 stock camera installed.

hmmm.... in my post, I was talking only about video. Photo on the other hand already got improved focus in 4.4.4.
Testing camera indeed could be a very difficult and professional job because in every situation may got various results. You have no problem don't really meant others won't have it because we are in a completely different testing environment.
It won't everytime can't focus or all times can't do from near to far or else the camera is total defective and Sony will receive many complaint. The problem is our camera is always semi-break or buggy, it works but not that easy to predictable or unstable and works perfectly like a DSLRs because they got a much better software. The problem can be only happened in some specific environment.
I've been hearing lag is a common problem on some people's devices. I want to know what to watch out for. Where does the lag occur and how bad is it? I'm also sort of holding off on rooting because of this. Off topic what is covered by the Samsung warranty?
I would also like to know. Im coming from a stock rooted lollipop n5 and it makes the note 4 look like a slow poke. Theres all kinds of lag . Especially the delay went trying to open the recent apps and looking at the gallery from the camera. Im hoping the lollipop update will speed this thing up or Im gonna have to try out some custom software.

I also did a recent discovery today: The Moto X Play its faster when it comes to take pictures, also a lot faster than the N5X with HDR enable in both phones.
Im really, both amazed and disappointed by this. I switched from a Moto X Play to the N5X to find only lags and slow performance.
Anyone else have experienced something like this? Is this a general problem or my device could be defective?

There where a lot of complaints about the Moto X Play, i even participated in tests for find a way to speed it's performance.
And yes, while the Nexus 5X it's faster, the Moto X Play it's more stable.

How often do you need to take HDR pictures and do you really need to press the shutter every second? If you know how to selectively expose a scene properly then HDR is not needed at all. While NX5 takes excellent pictures, I only use it when extremely needed. A dedicated camera especially ones with WIFI connectivity for direct upload to social networking sites is far better than any camera phone out there.
You're experiencing lags and freezes. Serious ones too! Mine for a little slow after the April MHC19Q update. So I wiped it and it was much better after a factory reset. I also go to developer mode and turn down all three animations to to 0 and enable force GPU rendering.

Well, the problem is that it slow and freeze with only 3 or 5 HDR pictures, is not that many. And the Moto X Play, even the Nexus 4 can handle more than that. The video I uploaded was even before I take any picture, I just opened the camera app.
I blame the encryption since it doesn’t make any sense that those smartphones can handle that process faster.
About “A dedicated camera especially ones with WIFI connectivity for direct upload to social networking sites is far better than any camera phone out there.” I have used my cousin S7 Edge and its impressive fast for pictures, and with the N5X and S7 with raw support, I believe we should be able to handle without the need for a dedicated camera.
I already sent my N5X back in hope to receive a new device, maybe there was something wrong with the internal storage read/writes.

Mine was already reset to factory settings for the 3th time, so I gave up and sent it today for replacement. I don't think this is the kind of device that need the animations to be disabled, my gf Moto X Play doesn't need that, even the Nexus 4 im using right now doesn’t need that.

I just wanted to say that I sent my Nexus 5X back to LG for repairs, following own Nexus Forum recommendation:
https://productforums.google.com/d/msg/nexus/sFmrWiceXf4/bAEAdlO_BwAJ
But I got back my phone in this state:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u...s5x_lg_warranty/photo_2016-08-23_17-24-10.jpg
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u...s5x_lg_warranty/photo_2016-08-23_17-24-15.jpg
Also I need to say that they sent me back my phone without the box, charger, original cable and everything else inside the box.
Since the phone wasn’t rooted and was still encrypted it was a nightmare to get it working by my own, but I finally managed to install a custom recovery and from there do a clean install, but to find the LG sent my my phone without the SIM tray.
I had to buy a new charger, cable and sim tray, but I have the phone working now.
If I use the stock rom or CyanogenMod rom I still get the same exact problem in my video, but with Dirty Unicorns seems that the problem its gone for good, so i still believe its a software problem, but as long I stick to DU i should not have problems anymore :good:
