Hello lovely android people,
I am a newbie, so im guessing this probably isnt the right place to post this type of question. Please feel free to guide me to the right place.
So the question...
I rooted my galaxy ace2 (gt18160) and install Pimp My Rom app from the market. Did some changes with it and now the phone wont start up, stuck in the bootloop where the logo appears and it does not go anywhere from there.
Ive been researching for solution since yesterday, and found out that I could re-flash the firmware using o2 stock using odin.(although im not quite sure this is a correct solution)
Since there's a possibility of all the data getting deleted, I want to get some files out of the device using ADB pull.
I used adb shell to look for the files I need. At first I could see the sdcard in the root directory / but could not access it without su. After doing su command I can go inside the sdcard directory (where my files are), but it appears to be empty.
ls -l /mnt lists the sdcard with unusual d--------- permission.
Im stuck and dont know how I can grab my files from the sdcard folder.
any suggestion will help.:cyclops:
Thanks
mnt/sdcard is only a symlink to storage/sdcard0 (mount for the internal sdcard) so it does make sense that adb can't cope with that path.
Still, it is impossibibble to delete stuff from either of your sdcards via odin or recovery. Flashing via odin doesn't wipe the data partition either, so as ong as u select the right firmware for our phones, nothing can go wrong really
Thanks for your reply Carpe-Dimi.
after checking /prop.partiitons, it seems that sdcard hasnt been mounted.
The problem now is that there are 18 partitions and I dont know which is the sdcard?
I tried mounting the first mmcblk0. Give me the 'device or resource busy' error.
Excuse my arrogance but I would have liked to find out why I cant access the sdcard or why I cant mount the partitions.
...and thanks again for letting me know that flashing does not wipe the data. :good:
SOLVED!
As Dimi said, flashing does not wipe data partition. But I was able to recover my files in recovery mode as it automatically mounted the mmcblk0p8 partition.
Then installed stock firmware.... tried new jelly bean, then went back to stock as its slow and laggy.
Cheers

I have a problem, and I'm dealing with it since this saturday. I really need my phone this evening so I really want help. My phone has since saturday a bootloop with every rom. Today I found out that it could have something in common with a error in the recoveryscreen which says it can't mount /data. CWM and the stock recovery both have this problem. Can please anyone help me? I'm really confused, because I have tried everything.
//I've discovered that the problem is that the /data partition is crashed. Is is possible to recreate the internal partition table?
install a stock rom then re-install cwm 5.0.2.7

I have done that already a few times.
Try flashing an ext4 converter, or re dd'ing an empty RFS format partition into place.
Already done. When I try to use ext4formatter in CWM it doesn't give an error, but when I try to do the data reset I will get an error again because it can't mount (and unmount) /data.
//And how do you add a RFS partition on the phone? Or do you mean on the SD?
Factory reset?
Have you tried doing a factory reset with Kies?

Thank you for trying to help, but your answer is stupid. It's impossible to go to Kies without a (working) rom...
I think I just found something interesting to know. I tried again to install Cyanogenmod 7.2 (ported by Phiexz) and in the Aroma installer I looked at the System Info. Almost everything looks fine, but this is not good I think:
Data Size : -1MB
Free : -1MB
(/mnt/sdcard) : -1MB
Free : -1MB

Are those partitions crashed? And how do I resize or reformat them back?
Which ext4 converter did you use?
Phiexz's if I remember correctly, uses the formatting tools included in the recovery. Mine has its own, separate binaries.
To reflash an RFS partition into place, you could use the dd command (carefully). Here's an empty RFS formated /data partition.
Or reflash back to the stock recovery and use that to format the partitions back to RFS.
Extract to your SD card and use the following command:
dd if=/sdcard/data.rfs of=/dev/block/stl13 bs=4096
Good luck,

I did use Phiexz's first yes. But I can't install yours. And where do I have to use dd commands? :$
What do you mean by "can't install mine"? Is there an error message or you're not sure how to do it?
If so, just apply it from the SD card like any other update.
The dd command has to be input through ADB shell while in recovery. So get ADB working if you haven't already.

I did know how to install a zip, but I tried 2 times and I think both were a bad download. Now I'm installing your Ext4 Converter.
// YOUR EXT4 CONVERTER WORKED!!! After a week without a phone it finally worked! Thank you so much!
Glad to hear that!
I had a similar problem of being unable to mount /system after installing a CM9 beta (can't remember which) and ended up solving it like that.
Hey guys i have a question relating to this dscussion. I have my gio running CM9 and i recently used BML5 to find my phone's unlock code. I have a nandroid backup of Rooted stock ROM, and when i tried to flash back to it, it said "Could format dev/block/stl13". I have the CWM 5.0.2.7 with RFS and EXT4 support, so it should work. What is the problem?
That's the thing; the exact behavior of those RFS+ext4 CWM builds when changing from one type to the other hasn't been very well documented.
I'm not sure they can format back to RFS properly.
You could always try that empty RFS partition set and attempt a restore afterwards.
What can i do if dd says, that it can't open '/dev/block/stl13': Invalid argument? I placed the data.rfs to the root directory of sdcard. Am I doing something wrong?
Can't mount /data
Hello, I have a bricked phone, and no idea why, and so far I'm unable to fix it. I've been waiting for an RMA so I can send it back to GSM Nation to evaluate and hopefully fix. My problem started when Samsung support told me to do a factory reset of my Samsung Galaxy S3, and it rebooted, then said it could not find or mount /data or anything therein. I have Not, repeat NOT, rooted my phone, it had the stock Android 4.3 OS and updates from T-mobile. The tech at the Samsung Experience Shop in the Best Buy store could not reflash it, when Kies tries to talk to the phone in Side Load mode it freezes or something, nothing happens. I downloaded ODIN 3 on Dad's win XP laptop, and in ODIN download mode the computer sees it as a new device with no driver to make it talk to it, and the drivers I've downloaded simply will not install. The installers die as soon as they run having done nothing. I am using my Samsung Chromebook to write this and have no Linux machine to work with. I am at a loss. Can you help me? Maybe I could re-install android using a microSD card?
I have the solution for data partition crash or any other partition
please do it with your responsibility but your phone is alreay bricked so it doesn't matter
hi every one i 've been through this problem for a long time and just yesterday hamdo lilah i discovered the solution it is by repartitioning your partitions with a pit file . i tried this method with samsung galaxy fit and it works even the pit file is for samsung .all you have to do is open odin included in the package then select pit file included then click start and there you go 'even if it doesn't show PASS ' after that just flash a stock rom ' or maybe any rom ' and that's it you are ready to go . i uploded the package on gulfup cause i have no account in mediafire enjoy if you face any problem just contact me or add a replay

I have been busy today with a nasty problem, i hope you anyone can help me out.
I was running JDROID's custom rom with great satisfaction, had it backupped. The trouble started when i downloaded an other rom and forgot to place the rom (.zip) on my sdcard before i flashed the boot.img via flashboot.
By that time i didnt knew how to use ADB commands, so i decided that i would forget about the new rom and i would restore my working backup. (im using CWM)
After restoring that backup a bootloop occured, so tried lots of things like wiping the cache. Also ive tried to restore the backup after lots of full wipes ect. Even installing JDROID's latest rom witch i had on my sdcard dindt help. Still had a bootloop.
I managed to use ADB when my phone was switched off, and i pushed a rom.zip to sdcard. But CWM cant seem to find it.
My question is this: in CWM there is an option to "mount USB storage". When i use it i get the message "unable to open ums lunfile". I have tried formatting the sdcard, whereby i deleted my backups still didnt work.
What whould you guys try next?
relock the bootloader and run an ruu appropriate to your cid
I was wondering whether anyone has experienced the following:
I was on Team Sonic-Free GS3 v.3.0.0. Everything was setup the way i wanted it. I booted into Recovery and created a Restore point.
Right after, I did the following:
- Wipe Data/Factory Reset
- Wipe Cache partition
- Wipe Dalvik Cache
- Format /System
- Format /Data
- Format /Cache
I installed the latest Nightly from Cyanogenmod 10 (12.26). Initially I used an older version of gapps-jb but immediately flashed the correct one. Everything went fine. The system loaded and nothing seemed wrong. After some messing around I noticed it was a big sluggish on my phone. So I decided to restore the phone back to its original setting.
When I went to backup/restore and hit the Restore option, it told me that I had no recovery points! :crying::crying: At this point I started freaking out.
I tried to see if I could flash from the SDCard and I noticed one thing. This was in order to get to the main folder of the SDCard i needed to enter a folder named "0". All the files were there including my CMW recover file. Although it was on the card the recovery option was unable to see it.
After this I decided to do the following. I clean swiped again and installed the Free GS3 version i had on the SDCard already. I booted into the system and saw that the folder "0" was there but also in the main directory there were still folders. In the main portion of the card i loaded my copy of the recovery.
I went back into recovery and and tried again. The restore file was there! :good::good: I was able to recovery my original setup. Unfortunately, all of my pictures and music were still located within the newly created "0" folder. I just copied those back.
Can anyone explain why this happened? I'm very curious!
I do apologize if this has been answered before. I have done a search and have only found scenarios for the SDcard is not seen as mounted. (also dont know if the icons mean anything for the post)
*Update - Folder "0" cannot be deleted. Root explorer says "failed" and Windows Explorer says "Cannot delete 0: THe storage is write-protected". Any ideas on this also?

Was it registering a different recovery version when you flashed CM10 from the FreeGS? If so that would be why it didn't register the backup that you made. (I had this issue or similar to on my Touch) flashed a different rom that used CVM 5.something.. and original was a newer version. Caused me some issues. As for the folder being write protected. Try using root explorer, mount as R/W and then try to delete from there. Just ensure you have everything out of it you want tho.

hey milky1112.
Thanks for reading and providing your input!
I actually used the sames recovery when creating and trying to restore. That's the odd part. I did recently flash the newer version within the old recovery. Do you think that may have been it? Although the new one was used to create a nandroid and restore it.
I just tried deleting using Root Explorer and the same result. It's not a big deal since its only 69mb but it's quite annoying knowing I can't.
thanks again!

That is very possible, still odd that it will not let you delete even with R/W permissions set. But as long as everything is working.. Then i wouldn't fuss too much
The new rom you installed is on 4.2 not 4.1 which is probably what you had originally. The new 4.2 releases by Google move everything into the O folder its part of the new Android set up to dual boot devices. If the recovery is not set up to correct for this your phone will not recognize where the files have been moved to. In my understanding only TWRP is corrected to do this, we'll at least in the Gnex it is. Anyone on Cwm has had issues with this. The fix is to copy and paste your files back into its original location. You can not delete O folder it is an essential part now of your system and it's where it will reference everything from and originals must remain.

hey edfunkycold,
thanks a ton for the response and clarification! i was thinking about swapping recoveries but i already reverted back to the original nandroid image i had at that point.
and you are correct. i was on 4.1 and not 4.2. i didn't know such changes were made but its great to see dual boot is coming up.
i will make sure to THANK both responses once i reach 10 posts. i'm trying hard to participate in these forums but haven't had time until recently.
My phone is currently not working at all so I would really appreciate some help. I was running MMuzzy's 4.2 JB ROM (Around the 12/16/12 Version) and I decided to update to the 1/11/13 ROM version. So I installed the files onto my phone and rebooted into recovery, wiped cache and dalvik cache, and installed the files form SD Card. After this, I chose reboot system and it just went straight back into recovery. New ROM wouldn't load. I was an idiot and did not do a backup of my previous rom because I thought it would be a flawless process since I was updating to a new version of the same ROM. So I have no backup to access right now. An odd thing I noticed is when I "chose ZIP from SD card" multiple options such as 0/ and obb came up instead of just showing the files in my SD card. Right now to access my files I have to choose ZIP from sd card, choose 0/, 0/ again, 0/again, and then I can see my ROM and gapps zip files. Since the New rom didnt work I did a factory reset and wiped everything and tried to install the Zips again. Still nothing. Also, the phone can't find any of my old backups. I suspect this has something to do with the odd formatting issue and 0/ and obb folders showing up but I have no idea. What should I do? At this point I don't care If I lose everything on my sd card I just want my phone working.
Thanks
in mounts and storage mount /data then
adb push ROM.zip /data/media
then unmount and it should be there on the root of your "sdcard"
Edit- but if you have 3 "0" folders then you will have to change it from data/media to data/media/0/0/0

Okay. Any way someone can give me a more detailed step by step on how to do these instructions? Sorry I'm pretty much a noob at this and I barely remember the ADP stuff I did on my mac when I first rooted my phone.
Thanks a lot

If you're a n00b then flashing a new ROM without knowing how to fix an issue wasn't the best idea was it?
The best solution I can give is to flash back to 100% stock and then start again once you know what you're doing. Use this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895
So I'm not panicking as I know this is most likely recoverable, but I do want to make sure I do this right. I was prepping my galaxy nexus to give to my wife since I got a note 2 and was consequently trying to get it completely wiped. I was trying to clear all the user data and was surprised that it was clearing (I think it was because it's is stored in the /sdcard directory). So, I popped into the mounts and storage section and started formatting . Seriously, I'm not sure what I was thinking here. I only got to the /sdcard and /system before I stopped and reconsidered, but it was too late. Because I had already formatted the /sdcard, I lost my rom and gapps zips.
Anyway, I think all I need to do is hop into adb, transfer the necessary zips to my /sdcard directory, and flash them. Is that correct? Also, of the options on there, what can I format without issue? /system is obviously for the rom itself (or at least mostly), so I'll avoid that in the future. What is the /data and /cache used for?
Yes you are correct about your process. I even there myself about five times now not knowing what I was thinking when I pressed all those buttons hah.
Data is used by android for app caches and the cache is for system and kernel caches. May not be entirely correct but they are safe to clear

I actually was trying to format everything to get the GN as clean as possible and ended up deleting everything including my rom that I was going to install(CM10.1). Thankfully recovery was still on there and I just pushed my rom and gapps using adb. I couldn't get the sideload command to work using clockwork so ended up just using the push commands. Make sure to specify the destination folder on your phone with the file name it will be on your phone. I ran around in circles realizing I wasn't specifying the file name in the folder location. Good luck!
