I've already rooted and unlocked my bootloader and I'm just about to load a custom ROM, however where do I put the files so when I wipe/factory reset they don't get deleted? Thanks.
Your files don't get deleted. Only data and apps on android partition

Anywhere outside /system. i.e. place them on the part of your sd card where your pics, music, etc... live.
Really? That doesn't seem right for some reason...I just unlocked & rooted my girlfriends new Verizon Nexus but didn't put a ROM on it right then (which I should have done ), and during that process all of her photos and apps were deleted. I luckily had backed up photos, sms backups, etc. off of the device so I was able to transfer those back, but it was bone stock (like nothing on it at all) after that process. Is that "wipe" different than the "wipe data/factory reset" we have to do before going onto most of the ROMs for the Nexus?
Sorry about my ignorance...I'm an Epic 4g Touch owner so I'm well versed in it, but just starting to learn about the Verizon Nexus. Thanks a lot guys.
Unlocking the bootloader wipes it all; but a wipe data/factory reset from CWM doesn't touch your virtual sd card, i.e. photos, etc... remain. The OP is already unlocked, so he's "safe".
I will answer your specific question, "Where to put files so a wipe won't delete them?" If you want to be safe, on your computer or on anything external other than the phone. I only say this because the phone does not have an external sd card. Ill repeat what I said in another thread...we don't backup for the disasters we foresee but for the ones we don't.
Only the factory recovery wipes the /data/media ("/sdcard") partition. Any third-party community-built recovery (like ClockworkMod Recovery or TeamWin Recovery Project) will wipe everything except /data/media.
So, to answer your question, as long as the files are on your phone's pretend SD card (the default for user-created content and files you transfer to your phone), they won't be wiped when installing a custom ROM.

Awesome - thank you both for your responses. That's actually a pretty cool little feature. I wish my phone could have apps retained after doing a "data/factory reset" wipe, which is such a good idea when going between ROMS.
I am stating that correctly, right? Apps, app data/caches, pretty much everything but system apps will be retained after a 3rd party data wipe? I just want to be sure, especially since it's not my device I'd be messing with Thanks

No, I'm afraid not. Applications will be wiped, as they reside on /data/app. The only item not wiped is the /data/media partition. Plug your phone up to your computer - the files and folders that you see listed will remain after a full wipe. Everything else will be gone.
Though, to be technical, a "factory reset" wipe primarily wipes /data (except for /data/media) and /cache. You'll generally have to manually wipe (through recovery) /system.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking...thought it was a little too good to be true. No biggie...that's what Titanium backup is for
So, just to play devils advocate...if I were to copy, for instance, the go sms backup file that's created when you backup files to the /data/media partition, theoretically that would be retained, correct? That's about the only thing that would be lost doing a 3rd party wipe that couldn't be TB restored...and when I talk about the go sms back up I would like to throw things like her circle launcher setup backup files, etc. in that ring...what do you think about that?

A lot of apps (I can't speak specifically for those, unfortunately) actually keep their user-created backup files in a directory on /data/media, so those would be safe. I know that Nova Launcher, Titanium Backup, Tasker, and some others do that.
The SD card does not get wiped between rom flashes using Cwm. Only the first boot loader unlock does everything get wiped.
So all my files and pics on my SD card stay in tact when I wipe in Cwm or flash a new rom.
Hi all,
I have a similar question.. I'm wanting to know where I can safely put the ROM zip because I want to wipe the sdcard0 partitiion
If I put it in /data/media I should be able to select it from there in CWM recovery right?

So I rebooted into recovery, formatted the sdcard.
Now when I try to push the file in adb, it's not showing up.
Tried pushing to both /storage/sdcard0 and /sdcard but they're not showing up when i ls into them from shell. In fact I can't acces /sdcard at all, but /storage/sdcard0 is empty.
I can't mount /sdcard in CWM either.
Help!

Try /data/media, as that is where the "sdcard" data actually resides. The other locations are just links that point here
You may need to use the recovery option to mount /data.

In the future, though, what should I have done different to avoid not being able to access /sdcard?

I'd just try accessing it via /data/media instead. The other links may not be created before the system actually boots.
I posted a thread not long ago here but the problem is bigger than I thought. I can't write or delete files from multiple folders.
I got fed up, and did a factory reset from the setting menu, but after if finished, the files were still there.
I booted into clockwork, wiped data, cache, and dalvik, and reflashed the Jellybean rom. After successful installation, the files were still there!!!
Someone in the other thread thinks it might be a formatting problem that occurred when I went from ICS to JB. I restored from the Gnex toolkit, which is probably what caused the problem.
I'm happy to wipe, reformat, whatever it takes
Any ideas?
Thanks
Give some more information. Where are the folders located? In /mnt/sdcard/?
But well, this maybe help you. No warranty, though. Never tried, and won't until I need to.
Code:
fastboot erase userdata
if the files are located in sdcard or sdcard0, try going to data/media and delete from there.

making progress. I can delete stuff from data/media. As long as I can write new files, I should be ok.
it's /Sdcard that I'm concerned about. I was trying to add and delete music, but it wasn't letting me.
Update
I think I'm good. Music is copying over (through double twist air sync)
I'll follow up if anything else is locked out.

Hello lovely android people,
I am a newbie, so im guessing this probably isnt the right place to post this type of question. Please feel free to guide me to the right place.
So the question...
I rooted my galaxy ace2 (gt18160) and install Pimp My Rom app from the market. Did some changes with it and now the phone wont start up, stuck in the bootloop where the logo appears and it does not go anywhere from there.
Ive been researching for solution since yesterday, and found out that I could re-flash the firmware using o2 stock using odin.(although im not quite sure this is a correct solution)
Since there's a possibility of all the data getting deleted, I want to get some files out of the device using ADB pull.
I used adb shell to look for the files I need. At first I could see the sdcard in the root directory / but could not access it without su. After doing su command I can go inside the sdcard directory (where my files are), but it appears to be empty.
ls -l /mnt lists the sdcard with unusual d--------- permission.
Im stuck and dont know how I can grab my files from the sdcard folder.
any suggestion will help.:cyclops:
Thanks
mnt/sdcard is only a symlink to storage/sdcard0 (mount for the internal sdcard) so it does make sense that adb can't cope with that path.
Still, it is impossibibble to delete stuff from either of your sdcards via odin or recovery. Flashing via odin doesn't wipe the data partition either, so as ong as u select the right firmware for our phones, nothing can go wrong really
Thanks for your reply Carpe-Dimi.
after checking /prop.partiitons, it seems that sdcard hasnt been mounted.
The problem now is that there are 18 partitions and I dont know which is the sdcard?
I tried mounting the first mmcblk0. Give me the 'device or resource busy' error.
Excuse my arrogance but I would have liked to find out why I cant access the sdcard or why I cant mount the partitions.
...and thanks again for letting me know that flashing does not wipe the data. :good:
SOLVED!
As Dimi said, flashing does not wipe data partition. But I was able to recover my files in recovery mode as it automatically mounted the mmcblk0p8 partition.
Then installed stock firmware.... tried new jelly bean, then went back to stock as its slow and laggy.
Cheers
Hi guys,
Newbie to the forum and android just need a bit of help as im pretty stuck at the moment and i dont know whats gone wrong.
I wanted to install Jelly Bread v5.0 or something other that the restricted phone carrier os on my phone when i got it (i wont mention just incase) so heres what i did.
rooted the phone using an update.zip from on this forum somewhere.
installed: signed_cwm-5.0.2.7-flashablezip-ext4only.zip
then installed: Jelly Bread v5.0
was ok for a while and working but then i wanted to play with other ROMS (in this case i now wanted to try cm-10.1.4-GT-S5660-gio++.zip)
I enter recovery, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, wipe batt stats
Then install cm-10.1.4-GT-S5660-gio++.zip
Then it hung for 35mins at loading blue circle screen.
I then took battery out and enter recovery, and attempt to wipe data/fatory reset and it says:
--Wiping data...
Formatting /data...
E:format_volume: make_extf4fs failed on /dev/block/stl13
Formatting /Cache...
Formatting /sd-ext...
E:format_volume: make_extf4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
Formatting /sdcard/ .android secure...
Data wipe complete
Also i cant wipe dalvik cache it just does nothing blinks 1 second then back to menu.
From here (silly me i forgot to backup) ive tried to flash a few stock roms but still getting boot loops and the same above errors.
Is there any way i can format and write /data and /sd-ext?
Anyone know what i can do to fix this please?
Thanks for any help in advance.
update
Hi guys,
Just an update.. have tried several stock ROMS via ODIN always flashing CWM and flashing custom ROMS but nothing with flash and reformat the /dev/stl13 block. im always getting this error and i believe its causing my boot loop issues.
I found this thread via google:
forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/6433-solved-messed-up-partitions-on-internal-storage/
is there anybody on here that could guide me through using ADB shell to rebuild/reformat the /dev/stl13 block?
I dont feel confident enough to do it. (Have already installed shell on my laptop though)
This is driving me crazy trying to fix. My first android ROM flash gone wrong
(i got it working fine with Jellybread but wanted to try something else)
Any help appreciated.
Cheers
Richie
Got your PM, but this sort of discussion is best kept in public.
Be careful with that HTC-related thread, it's a different device, with a different set of tools and likely a different partitioning method.
Back to basics: have you tried flashing back to stock with Odin and formatting your /data and /cache partitions with the Samsung stock recovery?
AFAIK CWM5 is for Gingerbread (2.3.x). For anything above (CM10.1 is Jelly Bean 4.2.2), you need CWM6.

Hey dude,
Thanks for the reply.
I have tried flashing back to stock (latest from samfirmware) and it still wont let me mount data.
Although its giving me my orignial load screen (my carrier) but still boot loops.
Ive tried look for another stock ROM i can use but alot of the links are down/broke or withdrawn etc.
I note with stock recovery i just can't mount data but after i install CWM 5.0.2.7 ext4 only it cannot format ext to block stl13.
Could this possibly mean that my internal memory has failed or it just needs to be repartitioned?
Will continue to look for another stock rom that can hopefully fix the problem.
You don't care about the errors failing to mount in the stock recovery. It's expected since it isn't set to work with an ext4 partition.
Just run the format operations from the stock recovery.
Most "stock" ROMs released here were made to run on ext4 since performance was that much better and most CWMs built also run ext4, unless explicitly stated to run RFS.
I can't think of any tools to repartition the Gio, otherwise we would have been all over it back in the day to solve the /system space shortage.

Do you suggest to flash stock via Odin?
And then correct me if im wrong but to get to CM10,1 i go in this order after a stock flash:
1. Install CWM 6.0.3.2
2. run ext formatter
3. install ROM (in this case CM10.1??
Cheers for any help in advance.
Im quite new to Android.. but not new to flashing etc (BIOS, PSP's other devices etc) but this is my first android phone and i didnt like the Phone Carrier custom ROM and network lock. So attempted to try something else. Got Jellybread running fine but decided to have a look around. And now im phone less (well not really using my old nokia n97) but it is sooo painful! lol
I don't think my initial reply could have been much clearer. If you've been flashing these so called "stock" ROMs with CWM, they weren't entirely, completely stock.
1 - Flash original, unmodified Samsung ROM with Odin.
2 - Boot to recovery
3 - Clear user data (or however they named the format operations, I forget)
4 - Reboot
Only if those steps did not work then do we have to start poking around more.

Sorry man i had not read your reply before my previous post.
As stated in my previous post, I have flashed 2 stock ROM's from samfirmware via Odin and it passes.
On one of the ROMS (an NZ ROM) it gives me the error: E:format_Volume: rfs format failed on /dev/stl13
On the other ROM (The Aus ROM) it gives me the error: Unable to mount /data
On both im getting boot loop.
If the stock recovery refuses to format the /data and /cache partitions, I'm afraid you'll have to consider warranty service.
Otherwise, try dd'ing the RFS images I've already posted into place, but I'm not sure that this'll work.

It formats the /cache partitions just not the /data as it cant mount it.
Warranty service? I will have to pay? as i have bought the phone 2nd hand and i dont think its under warranty.
I did see the other post and have downloaded "Samsung GT-S5660M Galaxy Gio - RFS format data and cache partition images to dd back into place"
But i cannot find the post again with the directions. Also when pushing these images from the SD card am i meant to be in stock recovery or RFS CWM?
Cheers Darkshado for all the help so far.

Could it possibly be a physical hardware failure?
Could be, or some unusual partition table corruption. Problem is, I'm not even sure how the partition table is defined on the phone or if we can alter it...
Try the df command, it should give a listing of partitions on the phone.
Also try ls -l /dev/block/ to list all block devices and see what's there.
Maybe, just maybe parted as well? But by this point your odds aren't in your favor.
Good luck,
Darkshado
you can install a rom after downloading and flashing ext4 formatter.zip

Have been extremely busy with other projects and work lately and haven't had net the past week (so painful!)
but otherwise latest results are attached. Can you make anything of it? Does this look normal?
Cheers again.
Richie
Looks normal at first glance, though I don't have a Gio to compare with.
You could try and dig into how these phones are partitioned exactly and go from there, but you'll probably be on your own since most people who were interested in early MSM7227 devices have moved on.
Unless the underlying memory is defective, it's possible your only option left at this point is to try a JTAG repair.
However, depending on how much you'd be charged for such an operation locally, and taking into consideration the value of your typical used Gio (I've seen them go for 50$CAD in local classifieds)... You're probably better off cutting your losses and getting another phone.
Good luck,
Darkshado

Using TWRP 2.6.3.0, I'm unable to wipe data. Every time I try, I get
"wiping data without wiping /data/media

I excluded the nonessential bits, if anyone wants a full log (something something partition details), I can make one.
I using ES File Explorer with root explorer on, I checked out /data and found two lost+found folders, which I think is causing my issue. I've tried deleting just one, but a second one is automatically generated. If I delete them both, then they're automatically recreated as well. If I delete them both and then remake one immediately after, another one will be remade.
I also checked the rest of the /data folder, and I did not find any lost+found files, so I'm pretty sure it's just the folders messing things up

I ended up here after I accidentally wiped my internal storage with TWRP. I went from a 4.3 AOSP rom to 4.1.2 stock (HD RLS16). I wiped the 4.3 rom, but I think I accidentally wiped internal storage then as well, or maybe something was messed up with TWRP because the storage folder for 4.3 isn't in data/media (or at least not for the rom I was using). After that I used hyperdrive, which was super buggy with Gapps and didn't work at all. After adding an account, everything kept force closing, and things were extremely slow and took minutes to open, even after removing the account and wiping cache+dalvik.
I thought it had to do with the rom, so I went and wiped stuff, then went to CM 10.1.3 stable, but that didn't boot at all, so I tried wiping again and going to liquidsmooth 2.9, which is where my problems started again. I attempted to wipe again and go back to cm10.1.3. The wipe failed, but cm10.1.3 worked.
any ideas on how I can fix this? I was unable to find help on google.

This has happened to me twice and the only solution i have found was to wipe internal storage. unfortunately i wasnt able to backup my internal storage before wiping so eveything i had on my phone was erased. Everything in your external is safe you dont have to worry but if you had important files or anything that you wouldnt erase on your internal storage then that is very unfortunate.
As for me, i now backup everything maybe like once a month or so, just in case something like this happens again.
Its happened to me also and I could not resolve it without the wipe, that was the only viable solution that worked for me.

Although if you're using twrp I just found out you can still save some of your precious files.
How? Simple
You can go into recovery and into the file manager. I think it's in settings or advanced I'm not sure. But I know that is built into twrp. So then just go into your internal storage and select the files and move them to the external storage.
If it's your first time using the file manager then you'll have to get used to it because it's not 100% noob friendly
And remember the bigger the file the longer it'll take to move so just be patient.
Use AromaFM!
search bar will serve you..

Can i get some help please. I cant format data via TWRP, it says "E: unable to wipe data, unknow fle system, auto, unable to format to remove encryption". I did not put any encryption. What to do?
Have you tried using different versions of TWRP to wipe?
