Has anyone been able to test a non-Verizon SIM?
Wondering if it's like the DNA and unlocked.
I think so. I can use the sim card that come from China.
Every new Verizon phone should be unlocked because of the FCC's open access requirements on the 700 MHz band. You can thank Google for that.

Open application part means that Verizon is not allowed to block applications from installing. For example... Google Wallet. But according to Verizon, they aren't blocking Google Wallet, "it uses a secure element." Just some BS excuse.
But yeah, Verizon isn't allowed to block applications.

Has anyone with SIM unlocked Lumia tried to use Internet Sharing with non-AT&T SIM? I use to own Focus Flash that was SIM unlocked. It worked well outside of AT&T network with one exception, internet sharing. Everytime I tried to initialize it I would get a message to contact AT&T
Internet Sharing is hardcoded to check AT&T account for verification. There is no way to unlock that unless you can somehow flash a generic non-AT&T ROM.
And unfortunately at this time, there is no custom non-at&t roms.
Still waiting....
not to hijack the thread, but can anyone confirm internet sharing works on Rogers? I have been unable to use it on my 900, and I have a 6GB LTE plan

Because it is required by carriers. You either have tethering but require account checking (because tethering cost $$) or don't have it at all.
And unlike GSM SIM unlock which is a GSM phone standard feature. There is no such thing as tethering unlock. For example, Android phone tethering check works totally differently than Windows Phone. Same is true for iPhone. But one thing is sure, they all contain propertary code in order to access specific carrier's user account information. So, T-Mobile phones will contain T-Mobile specific account verification code and AT&T phones will contain AT&T specific account verification code. Other carriers may not require any account verification at all.

I tethered from my Focus on AT&T and all I had to do was enable it thru the Diag. mode. Unfortunately that option does not appear on the 900.

There is no requirement/policy says that tethering has to be enabled for other carrier's SIM. Hence, there is no incentive for carrier to put a smart code in place to check whose SIM it is currently use.

Officially Focus does not support tethering at all. What you described is a diagnostic mode only existed on early WP7 phones using dail-up modem mode.

All AT&T Android phones are locked to AT&T for tethering, unlocked or not (it is quite easy to defeat if you root your phone in current non-ICS firmware. But with ICS firmware leaks, there is not yet any way to defeat the lock, only certain work arounds). You can buy non-carrier branded Android phone or WP7 phone. They are not locked to any carrier. Just don't expect any carrier branded phone to do the same.

Windowbreak is a full jail break for WP7 phone. It may or may not work on Lumia. Once you jail braked your phone, you can then replace the tethering module with a generic WP7 build that does not check accounts.

With a carrier unlock, all the carrier is doing is releasing the phones IMEI*(International Mobile Equipment Identity) number so that is can be activated with other carriers. It's merely database related and nothing more. Does not affect the bootloader or anything like that in any way.
The only time that code works is when you put the other carriers SIM is in your phone. It will ask that 'code' then.

They're not "releasing the IMEI" and it is not "database related." You confused SIM unlocking with IMEI blacklisting, when a carrier marks a phone's IMEI as stolen and blocks it from their network via blacklist, which is shared among carriers. A SIM unlock, which is what we're discussing, permits the phone's baseband to accept SIM cards with network IDs other than originating carrier, and is done on the handset itself. Don't spread misinformation, please.
In the case of the T-Mobile variant (H811), the ability to input a SIM unlock code was removed and a custom unlock application was installed instead which communicates with T-Mobile's servers to verify the handset is eligible for SIM unlock and then performing the unlock itself if requirements are met.

I have no idea what Sprint does on their devices, since they're CDMA/GSM/LTE hybrids. If there is a preloaded SIM unlock app, you can help us by telling us the unlock app package name and perhaps posting some screenshots of the app and its various options.

i thought this was just tmo and sprint that did this.
the person you quoted was responding to someone with an AT&T variant.
is at&t also doing this?
also, the tmo and spr phones do not accept the typical unlock codes... so it's not a matter of finding the hidden menu. unlock will require a totally different method.
for sprint users... once rooted you can edit the build.prop which opens the phone up.

However AT&T refuses to give me the unlock code for the G4 despite me buying the phone outright, having a prepaid account, and have been with them for over 3 years. What is going on here???? This can only be done by the US carrier associated with the device. It can also be done by some third party outfits, but you will need to check the web for "SIM unlock code"
AS mentioned earlier the carrier will do this at no charge 99% of the time.

Provisioning a phone is marking the phone in a carrier's system for use with certain features that the carrier offers.
If you care about unlocking the bootloader, you'll need to buy a Google version.
If you just want the phone, you can get a Verizon version from any retailer that sells the phone. Buying a Verizon version at the Verizon store without a Verizon account might be difficult.
Any chances I could unlock this phone? Is it impossible? I've seen some websites that claim to do it but most of them look like scams.

Verizon may help you unlock the phone to use on another carrier, if the phone was fully paid off and you have an account in good standing. Try giving them a call and speak with tech support.
However, phones that originated on the Verizon network will never have their bootloader unlocked. They have a different bootloader and signature, regardless of whether you change the carrier.

Verizon's bootloaders have been locked for years and years, and there's a great reason no reputable devs are continuing to work on unlocking them, it is not possible.
Unless you're prepared to share exactly how it to unlock a Verizon device's bootloader, and not just "talk" about it, please stop posting misinformation about it being possible.
This thread is about "carrier" unlocking a Verizon device, not unlocking the bootloader.
Please open a GENERAL thread about your opinion on the bootloader being unlockable.
