Non-Verizon with Verizon Lock?

Does anyone know definitively if a non-VZW pixel gets activated with VZW, does the bootloader become non-unlockable?

It doesn't.
Just did that myself. I put in the Vzw sim, have service and bootloader remains unlockable.

I have a Google phone on VZ. It stays unlocked no matter what you do.

So just to confirm, as long as it's not a Verizon variant of the Pixel, even if it's running stock VZW ROM & has received OTA updates while the bootloader is locked, it's still unlockable? I'd feel more confident buying an used one if this is the case; just need to confirm the SKU prior to purchasing.

nothing you do (besides manually relocking the device) will re-lock the bootloader.
My google bought xl runs a full verizon image.

Is there another way to differentiate the VZW & non-VZW Pixels besides the SKU on the box?

The non-Verizon Pixel has nothing to do with Verizon. The only thing Verizon about a non-Verizon variant is the Verizon sim card you put in. You mentioned it running a Verizon ROM however...the only way to have the Verizon ROM on it would to have unlocked the bootloader at some point and replaced the stock android with a Verizon ROM.

I should mention that I made a USUnlocked Pixel XL be never unlockable again.
Before putting in a VZN sim, I unlocked it. Sometime after, I got tired of the warning on boot-up and locked it.
The Verizon sim or the Google Verizon Image greyed out the Developer's Option of Unlock bootloader choice.
Forever. There was no way to get that icon to become alive again. So, the VZN sim or the VZN image will not relock
your phone, but it for sure prevents you from locking and unlocking it again. Felt like an idiot for relocking.

Wait a minute. You are leaving out some very pertinent information.
1. Was this a Google phone or a Verizon phone
2. Did you unlock with depixel 8 or not
3. After you locked the bootloader did you slide the switch over in dev options
This is the first I heard anything like that happening. If this is a Google phone then you can certainly return it stating what happened. You bought a developer device and somehow it became a consumer phone. That sounds like a warranty return to me.

1.) Bought directly from Google.
2.) Unlocked just after opening box and getting on Wi-Fi.
3.) Yes, after locking it, I enabled Dev Options and slid that slider back to locked stock status.
I basically ruined the phone for tinkering. Because it was locked, I could not go back to an Android version
that could be unlocked with depixel8.

If I were to buy an used non-VZW Pixel that was activated with VZW, then the bootloader is no longer unlockable (given that it's stock & locked) even if I'll be using it with another carrier?

Yes, in my experience. But I’m just 1 gumbah on 1 phone.
Maybe someone with HTC knowledge can tell us..

So on your dev options under the grayed out oem unlock, what does it say? Depixel8 was only meant for Verizon phones not Google ones.
Have you tried calling Google? Because even on wifi only, no sim, you bought a device that you could unlock and develop with. Somehow that device malfunctioned and you deserve a replacement. It's as simple as that imo.
I don't believe this to be common. In fact I've never heard of this happening before.

Didn't call Google. It's now on a family T-Mobile line and still can't be unlocked. She likes it as it is.

I get that. I don't unlock my bootloader and I'm perfectly happy too.
But you are correct, it's ruined for tinkering. Think in the future for a few. What about when you get a new device for the family member and yourself. Now you have a great device you can play with to either test stuff or mess with new roms or images. But you can't.
Just sayin. But it's always good for a trade in. I'd love to hear if this has happened to anyone else.

Pixel 2 XL Verizon Bootloader unlockable?

I am getting quite confused about if the Pixel 2 XL for verizon is unlockable and rootable, or if its not?
There are so many thread saying that it is with guides and some that say it is impossible.
Can anyone tell me if its possible? I recently purchased one of these phones via ebay and it was suppose to be google unblocked but its verizon.
So I am wondering if its worth keeping or returning for the unlocked one.

You could try it for a bit before dumping it. You may find that you can disable the apps you don't
like and customize it enough to not miss root apps. The P2 XL is actually a great phone out of the box.
Great daily user with strong battery.

There is an app called Virtual Xposed on github, which is basically a rootless Xposed module in a virtual enviornment on the phone, which can do that for you.

I am really gonna test that right now on my note.

Not going to help you, but I heard some people were able to unlock the bootloader by turning phone on , not inserting SIM card, & oem unlocking wasn't greyed out. Something about the phone connecting to vzw made the oem unlocking greyed out. I'm sure if that was still working would here more about it

Before the first boot the device doesn't have any configuration from Verizon. The only difference between the Google and Verizon model is that there is a pre-installed sim card in it. So, if you were to take the sim card out it wouldn't be recognized as a verizon phone and thus you would be able to unlock the bootloader. The only reason so few people get to unlock the bootloader is because the employee at Verizon turns the phone on in the store and activate it registering the device with Verizon.

Well, I might be wrong because I don't know exactly how the activation process goes but it mostly has to do with imei being registered with Verizon. Which doesn't happen when you buy them directly from Google. I mean they both have the same model number and the software version you have when you get the phone has nothing to do with the oem lock being greyed out. Actually, it might also be the serial for a pre-installed sim card has a different activation process then one that isn't, although that is unlikely.

Other way around.All the phones are registered with Google. They all ship locked. The phone on first boot contacts Google to see if it has permission to unlock, if it is a Google phone it gets permission. If it is a VZ phone it doesn't. It has nothing to do with what SIM is in it. The few VZ phones that do unlock are because Google messed up and entered it as a Google phone.
We have seen and captured the packets as they go to the Google server, it is very clear what is happening.
No offense, but a lot of us have known this for a long time. Since early on in the OG Pixel days. We have explained it time and time again. When we do we get grief for it, which I will get any second now by someone that just got a mislabeld Verizon phone and it unlocked for them. They have no idea how but now they are an expert.
That's why no one is really trying to unlock the phone or help. Nothing but grief if you do. Same reason many of the ROM developers have left xda.

Yeah, I pulled my VZW sim from my 6P and dropped it in the 2 XL prior to first boot and I'm still unlocked and never got any of the VZW crap for the two weeks I remained 100% stock.
So I'm thinking that theory can't be reverse engineered...

At the moment, Verizon bootloaders are locked and at the moment can't be unlocked

They are replacing phones with unlocked versions through verizon warranty replacement, hope this helps if you have any issues with your current device.

Likely that he got lucky and received a replacement that was able to be unlocked because google/verizon messed up. It's actually happened a few times with other members.

So, I got a Verizon Google Pixel 2 XL with 8.1.0 & Android 9 waiting to download. The OEM unlocking, under developer options is greyed out. So, this phone has no hope for unlocked bootloader?
Any ideas.....

Exchange it for a google version. Other than that, I'm afraid there is no current, reliable, bootloader unlocking method for the verizon variant device.

Last ?.... how does one go about exchanging? Do I contact Google directly? & if so..... Google store?
Sorry for the 2nd bother, just have no other options except list it as 4 parts on ebay.....

If you purchased it from eBay, then your in a pickle. I have no idea what their policy is, or if the seller would even consider it. As far as bootloader unlocking it, I'm sure there are some folks that can/will do it for a fee, however, as the saying goes....buyer beware :fingers-crossed:

If "OEM unlocking" is greyed out, that means the bootloader is locked and cannot be unlocked. There is no way to hack a P2XL with locked BL to make it unlockable.
If you bought the P2XL directly from Google Store and you requested the "unlocked" version, then Google sent you the wrong one. Send it back and get the one you purchased.
If you bought it from Verizon store or Best Buy, those devices are *always* bootloader locked (buying directly from Google is the only way to get one with unlockable BL). You could return it but you will pay a restocking fee.
If you bought from an individual, you can try to get your money back. But it will be up to the seller to take it back.

Your right on that.....!!! Just had my dad throw it up on his Ebay account for a bill $100.... Shame, even the Google Assistant is "OFF THE CHAIN"!!! Never saw what it's like on a Google phone before! I know now it IS the phone I want, & the Pixel 2 XL has dropped dramatically in price. Just make sure NEVER get a Verizon phone!!! If it wasn't for the "SHEEPLE", no way Verizon would last in a free market economy, with the way they cram restrictions down their customers throats....... js smh

T-Mobile Variant Can Be Unlocked With Latest Update?

So I'm still financing my device through T-Mobile, but I always check the device unlock app in the off chance that something changed. Today, I went through the unlock request and it was approved. No trying to contact T-Mobile about it or anything. It just went through. Skeptical, I went to see if the OEM unlock option was available, and I was able to toggle it with no issue. A friend mentioned that he'd heard the latest update was allowing people to unlock their phones without authorization. Anyone else getting this?

Well that is great news...I got TMobile to unlock perm the 2nd day I had mine. Still financed and everything.
I think they are getting more easy to request unlock on certain phones nowadays. My 6t was same but good luck with Samsung phone....

Were do you find this carrier unlock request? I'm curious, to see if it can be done with my sprint phone.

I doubt the Sprint model will have anything like that... This is for a T-Mobile discussion, and it's specific to T-Mobile version with the app that T-Mobile ships with it

Just finished installing the latest OTA update and unfortunately, the setting is still grayed out. Oh well.

How long have you had the device? Have you been using it for more than 45 days? I'm really hoping my unlock was intentional and not just a random mishap, because that'd be great news for T-Mobile users if that was the case

No, I just bought it. Paid in full. After doing some Google searches, I will have to wait 45 or > days before I can unlock. Kind of a bummer, but I can live with it. Got a good $ trade-in from T-Mobile, so that's why I bought the 3a XL from them.

Yeah, when you do that, an update would be appreciated. If you still have a balance on your phone, but it's unlocked, then that means we can confirm that t-mobile variants are getting unlocked before being paid off, which is great for people looking for rootable devices

Question anyone able to root with tmobile version?

anyone able to root with tmobile version? I have someone selling me their tmobile P6P, its payoff and unlock, but not sure if there is a difference after it is unlock.

There are already some threads in these sections concerning achieving bootloader unlock on T-Mobile variants of the P6P, which is all you need to worry about. Once you can unlock the bootloader (and have USB Debugging enabled) you can do anything you want.
I don't use T-Mobile but it involves contacting T-Mobile support, telling them you're going to be traveling out of the country, and request they SIM unlock the phone (so that you could use SIM cards that work in other countries). When they SIM unlock your phone, you can then enable OEM Unlock and unlock the bootloader. After that, the world is yours.
The other threads will give more detail and better advice, as I know there was something about temporary SIM unlock versus permanent, and how to achieve one or the other.
Search this section for T-Mobile in the thread name, if I remember correctly.

I used Twitter to send a Direct Message. I said "Good evening support. I have a favor to ask. Can you unlock my new Pixel 6? I may be going out of the country on short notice to assist a family friend and would want to put in a SIM from a carrier there."
After giving the agent my IEMI I was told "Thank you and thank you for being the best part of T-Mobile for over 5 years! Wow, there would be no us without you I was able to find that phone but see it doesn't qualify yet to unlock. No worries, #WeGotYourBack and I'm attempting to find a way around this. Checking on this right now for you. Be right back!"
I then replied "I appreciate that. I understand that normally the phone has to be on the network for 40 days and paid off but I believe there are temporary unlocks for traveling"

I have gotten every phone I've owned in the last 4 years unlocked no problem through Tforce on FB. They wont budge on my Pixel 6 pro this time. Its crazy.

Took a couple hours of messaging today but T-Mobile twitter unlocked 2 new phones that were financed through T-Mobile. At first I received a canned not eligible due "insert company policy". I asked if they would waive the 40 day requirement if I paid off both devices in full today. They agreed but both devices must be connected to and use data on the network first. I paid off the remaining balance and they instantly unlocked both phones. I did not have to use the unlocker app. Lot of hoops to jump through but we'll get a $600 credit over 24 billing cycles. Make sure the credits are on your pending bill. We still have to trade in the old phones.
Both of these phones have physical sims. They confirmed both devices would be unlocked for both physical and ESIMS. I also learned that OTA updates are pending with no time frame for all 3 of our physical SIM cards. The updates would enable SA (standalone) 5G. They currently rely on LTE. Support confirmed that ESIMS currently work with SA 5G and that customers are capable of switching to ESIM using the website.
Edit: I created a Twitter account just for this. Want to point out that the customer service agent was professional and pleasant to work with. Be patient and respectful. They are clearly overworked after Sprint merger and outsourcing by the corportate MBA terrorists.

In order to unlock bootloader with T-Mobile Pixel 6, device needs to be sim unlocked on their end.

Can you do a bootloader unlock with a temporary sim unlock from tmobile, or does it require permanent sim unlock from tmobile?

If you are SIM unlocked, it functions like a factory unlocked PX6/P. Enable OEM unlock, go to bootloader, fastboot flashing unlock
