Hello,
i recently installed 3rd party kernel on my rom and i would like to revert back to the rom stock kernel, i'm aware that i can flash boot.img, but I got a bit confused when I tried to flash it via gnex toolkit - what options shall I choose ? permanent/temporary - and which section shall I select after that screen ? unless of course there are easier methods to install boot.img - such as through manual adb fastboot command.
any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks!
If you want the rom stock kernel just reflash the rom.
"Long is the way, and hard, that out of hell leads up to light."
thanks, of course that's an option, but i was trying to avoid that, anyhow I managed to install just the stock kernel without having to reflash rom - i used gnex toolkit, copied boot.img (extracted from rom) into appropriate toolkit folder and selected the first option (boot) and voila i have the rom stock kernel...thanks anyway.
If you had a nandroid with that stock kernel just do advanced restore of the boot.img only.
Was this a question or a statement? As its in the q&a section, people gave you suggestions and you reply by correcting them and telling them what you did.
Why even ask or post it in the q&a thread??? (question)

I wasn't in attack mode just inquisitive as I didn't understand is you were asking or saying. Suggestion maybe you should update title of thread and place [fixed] or something like that. Glad you got it worked out. Another question for you, why where you so opposed to just reflashing your rom? You don't have to wipe just flash right over and in less than 1 minute it would have been done and the kernel your rom came with back on?

ed, for the simple reason that i'm using paranoidandroid, now imagine i have tons of apps using different lcd densities, thus reflashing the rom would have resulted in re-setting the densities for each and every app from scratch (at least i'm assuming that would have happened) - i wouldn't have bothered if i was using another rom such as aokp or something similar...

Because the first suggestion (flash a stock rom) doesn't make sense. Why would he flash a stock ROM when all he wanted was the stock kernel? (Yes, it was not written clearly, but it was pretty obvious he wanted to flash the stock kernel, not the stock ROM...)

It said reflash rom it didn't say anything about stock. He wanted the kernel which his rom came with.
simply by flashing it over his existing setup without wiping would have replaced the kernel to what he wanted and maintained all his settings as he currently has them. Simple less than 1 minute resolve. But hey he did it anyway the long route by extracting and flashing image on fastboot. That he resolved what he was trying to accomplish is all that matters. Symantics about which way may have been easier is of no consequence, I was just curious as to why he didn't try what seemed as the simplest route.

The way i see it, OP should just use the tools, not the toolkits.
Simply rebooting to bootloader, extract boot.img from his current rom, 'fastboot flash boot boot.img' would avoid reflashing the entire rom.
Or, through a previously taken nandroid, choose advanced restore in recovery, and only restore boot.img.

I went into recovery and wiped data, wiped my cache and dalvik cache and it's still stuck on boot loop...

it doesnt have to be on the root of your device, as long as its in your storage. if its in the storage, find that location amd flash it. now what do you mean you cant exactly set it there without it turning on? you lost me there.
The rom isn't on my phone whatsoever.
I meant I need to be able to have the phone fully turned on in order to move the zip over to it.

what recovery are you using? twrp has an adb sideload option, cwm might have something similar.
Just push another nightly zip over with adb, while in recovery. Simple! Don't understand what the fuss is all about.

if u made a backup for ur stock rom, then restore it.
if not, the easiest way is to reflash factory image using fastboot mode. or see my thread in signature
Pardon my noobishness, but I really would rather not unroot my phone and set it back to stock 4.1.1 unless it's my only option.
Either way, I created a backup last night but it doesn't work. When I tell it to install it says "no file found".
At this point, I'm willing to let somebody take over via viewfinder if it'll help >_>

So, I was relocking my HOX in order to get the OTA JB update from carrier (H3G) in order to use the new Viper ROM.
All went well and managed this. Got re rotted and installed CWM ans Super SU.
However, I read that before installing the JB Viper ROM it was important to do a full wipe. Using CWM i did this. Specifically I did the wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, wipe dalvik cache and format system.
Now my phone is stuck on the white HTC screen. Please help.
Thanks
You formatted system, which basically wiped the rom. Reflash and don't format system.

Thanks for the quick response and apologies for the basic and wrongly termed questions. Just panicking a little.
How do i get the ROM and boot.img on to the fone? Because it sticks at the white screen the pc doesn't seem to detect it.
Last time i used a stock RUU and followed that process. Will i be able to flash the new Viper ROM instead?
thanks
The boot.img is supposed to be flashed from the PC. To get the Rom into the phone you need to go back to clockworkmod, go into mounts and storage and press the mount usb thing
Edit - to flash the boot.img find a thread about fastboot. Don't worry you'll get there
To get the ROM on the phone boot into cwm and GOTO mounts & storage
Then mount USB storage
It should now be detected as a drive on your PC and you can copy the ROM back over

Got it resolved. I had used the tweaked kernel and assumed that this was not standard, so when asked about which kernel i was using i said it wasn't the viper one.
So i went back to basics and used the kernel that came with the ROM zip and just flashed both. Working fine now. The only question is whether I could have used the tweaked kernel and answered yes to using the viper version?
Thanks for your help. Felt like I have learned a fair bit in the last 12 hours though!
Well if you flashed a different custom kernel you can answer that with the question so it won't load the stock modules but backs up the custom modules from the custom kernel. This way it won't mess up functionality.
When you use a boot.img without it proper modules it can mess up those things you experienced. Hope i make my self clear

To be 100% sure when people say recovery they mean the programs like CWM or TeamWin and so on right ?
Is it bad for the device to change often the recovery software ? cause i have done that couple of times, started with TeamWin and later on ended up with CWM.
But the thing is that the problem is the installation process, it does not matter what ROM i use i get still the same error.
And for the Philz Touch could you copy the name of the link that i should download, they all look the same and way more links that i am used to.

The reason you can't install any rom is because you do not have the latest version of CWM installed. You should always install the newest version when you install any recovery.
The newer roms are using an updater-script that will not work on CWM 6.0.4.7. Install an updated recovery and then install the rom that you want.

To answer your question no yes maybe. Travel around through XDA and read/learn and you will understand.
as for philz i would try this one https://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/lt02wifi/philz_touch_6.44.9-lt02wifi.zip
in general find a recovery that works for you and stick with it until an update is actually called for.

good to hear you got it sorted. CM just isn't happening yet. just watch the forum like a hawk like everyone else is...:cyclops:
If your worried about destroying your tab you prolly shouldn't have come to mod it.I know sounds like a douche bag thing to say but even putting on the flash or roms that go with the tab can destroy your tab if done improperly or even if they glitched while flash which does happen or even worse power outage when flashing.

it might. I was reading about some commits on github that broke cameras across the board, stock or from the play store. I tear laptops apart regularly enough to remember how, it's the process itself that sucks
After messaging mastamoon, "I imagine all the stuff that's being worked on is basically in d2-common, msm8960-common and d2kernel which d2spr shares with d2vzw. I would just make sure whoever is building for d2spr is pulling in all the necessary hacks needed at the moment. Honestly I'm not sure what isn't committed at this point, but check out commits by Dave Daynard (nardholio) & Dan Pasanen (invisiblek) and make sure you're using that stuff."
The kernel (within this ROM) he's speaking of might help with the issues revolving around the camera.
Camera Works
Just thought I'd say that both cameras work all the time for me on the 4/09 build.
You said TWRP recovery is recommended but do you think its safe to flash on CWM because that is what I use. I have been thinking of switching Recovery's but don't have a computer to do so. Might try this app called "Flashify" or this "TWRP Manager" from play store that installs it to the device.

Make sure you have the latest cwm recovery and you should be fine. I'd recommend flashify, I liked it better and seemed to function better then twrp manager. Also once you install twrp there's a method to update the recovery without a computer or making a recovery updater zip, which can also flash custom kernels. Though I recommend sticking with the stock kernel untill cm12.1 becomes more stable

Well dont you have me a little scared now lol. I was gonna flash it tonight but this is the only phone I have until I get another s3, s4, or OnePlus One (don't know which yet) did you do this?
1-boot into recovery
2-Wipe data/Factory reset
3-Wipe Cache
4-Wipe Dalvik Cache
5-Format system
6-Install ROM
7-Install 5.1 Gapps
Did you try all this in the order? I usually do 1-5 Two times to just make sure.
Also make sure you have the latest version of the recovery your on (I use CWM so 6.0.4.5 , I believe that's the latest)

As for the process I use I do the same thing I've been doing for years. Same process I used to install 04/07. I've downloaded and tried at least 5 times.

A long boot can be common after a flash or an update. I've read reports of it taking 30 min for the phone to boot after one or the other.

04/09 does not install on my end. I did not make it to the boot animation. It does not go beyond the recovery.

Just thought I'd say that both cameras work all the time for me on the 4/09 build.

Can you tell us the recovery, gapps, etc that you are using? Any custom kernels? No one else is having this same luck, unfortunately.

Probably a bad upload. I recommend using the new build.

Hell, just give us your phone
Also, Lrs121... You had mentioned that you may try and cherry pick updates from other builds where the camera is working. I don't know much about cm source or building but have you considered using something like 'kaleidoscope git diff' to compare builds and see maybe where the camera fix is hiding?
Edit: not necessarily kaleidoscope, but git diff in general.
