Hello,
i recently installed 3rd party kernel on my rom and i would like to revert back to the rom stock kernel, i'm aware that i can flash boot.img, but I got a bit confused when I tried to flash it via gnex toolkit - what options shall I choose ? permanent/temporary - and which section shall I select after that screen ? unless of course there are easier methods to install boot.img - such as through manual adb fastboot command.
any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks!
If you want the rom stock kernel just reflash the rom.
"Long is the way, and hard, that out of hell leads up to light."
thanks, of course that's an option, but i was trying to avoid that, anyhow I managed to install just the stock kernel without having to reflash rom - i used gnex toolkit, copied boot.img (extracted from rom) into appropriate toolkit folder and selected the first option (boot) and voila i have the rom stock kernel...thanks anyway.
If you had a nandroid with that stock kernel just do advanced restore of the boot.img only.
Was this a question or a statement? As its in the q&a section, people gave you suggestions and you reply by correcting them and telling them what you did.
Why even ask or post it in the q&a thread??? (question)

I wasn't in attack mode just inquisitive as I didn't understand is you were asking or saying. Suggestion maybe you should update title of thread and place [fixed] or something like that. Glad you got it worked out. Another question for you, why where you so opposed to just reflashing your rom? You don't have to wipe just flash right over and in less than 1 minute it would have been done and the kernel your rom came with back on?

ed, for the simple reason that i'm using paranoidandroid, now imagine i have tons of apps using different lcd densities, thus reflashing the rom would have resulted in re-setting the densities for each and every app from scratch (at least i'm assuming that would have happened) - i wouldn't have bothered if i was using another rom such as aokp or something similar...

Because the first suggestion (flash a stock rom) doesn't make sense. Why would he flash a stock ROM when all he wanted was the stock kernel? (Yes, it was not written clearly, but it was pretty obvious he wanted to flash the stock kernel, not the stock ROM...)

It said reflash rom it didn't say anything about stock. He wanted the kernel which his rom came with.
simply by flashing it over his existing setup without wiping would have replaced the kernel to what he wanted and maintained all his settings as he currently has them. Simple less than 1 minute resolve. But hey he did it anyway the long route by extracting and flashing image on fastboot. That he resolved what he was trying to accomplish is all that matters. Symantics about which way may have been easier is of no consequence, I was just curious as to why he didn't try what seemed as the simplest route.

The way i see it, OP should just use the tools, not the toolkits.
Simply rebooting to bootloader, extract boot.img from his current rom, 'fastboot flash boot boot.img' would avoid reflashing the entire rom.
Or, through a previously taken nandroid, choose advanced restore in recovery, and only restore boot.img.

I know their is many threads already about this, but i cant seem to get the answer i need :/
when i boot my phone up it goes to the clockworkmod recovery menu, i can fully navigate it and all, but when i try to reboot the system or anything, it just goes straight back to the clockwork recovery menu :|
i am new to all this rooting and flashing roms stuff, so sorry if i sound dumb.
if their is a thread already answering my question then could you please link me..?
so what im really asking is how do i get back into my phone without it booting straight into clockworkmod recovery?..
I take you've flashed either Doomlords kernel or CM7 on your phone.
If it's the first you could flash the stock kernel. That would be done by simply extract kernel.sin from a ftf file, matching your build/FW number, with winrar/7z. Then boot and flash Doomlods kernel again or just start out with flashing Doomlords kernel once more.
If it's the latter you need to flash a stock rom. Dunno if there's some special steps to go from CM7 to stock, so check out the CM7 thread if this is the case. Or reinstall CM7 again to see if that helps. Flashing the CM7 kernel (only) probably could do it.
Odd that you're stuck in a CWM bootloop kind of thing, could be something with your volume rocker?
Regards Dousan...
thankyou for your reply dousan, much appreciated,
but i manage to figure out what i did wrong, turns out i accidentaly flashed the boot with the clockwork recovery boot instead of simply booting it, but i managed to fix it by flashing the cm7 boot as my boot, and now it works.
i am though looking to install cm7 and dont have a clue what im doing, could you please link me to an explanation thread or explain how i would do so? would be much appreciated. thanks man.
lol classic. You're not the first one that has falshed it instead of booting it
Anyway here's a link on how to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1128216
The how to is in post three and four. One is for GSM devices and the other is for CDMA devices.
Regards Dousan...
yeah seems like an easy mistake to make haha,
crap now that ive done it and its rebooted, all of the root applications are gone and most applications are crashing? i re-flashed the root mod and all but everything is still stuffing up. know how i could fix this because i cannot plug it into usb in order to put on cm7.. :/
I take you did it with a ftf file through flashtool? Was it the same FW build as you where on already? Did you tick wipe data before flashing?
If you're using flashtool i would do a reflash and tick 'wipe data' and then boot and take it from there with CM7. That should fix the fc'ing and when using flashtool the root will get wiped along with the rest of the phone.
Regards Dousan...
i wasn't using flashtool i was using fastboot, but ill take a look at flash tool and see if i can figure out whats going on, i want to get my phone back to stock without root, so then i know how to take it from there? how exactly would i do that with flash tool?
thanks for the help btw man im completely lost with this stuff haha

Here is a stock rom backup for the Sprint G S III. I made the backup after doing a data wipe, so the rom is pure, no lingering data, ect.
Instructions:
-unzip the .zip file
-move the backup folder into your existing CWM folder on the S III internal memory
-restore in recovery
Again, this is a stock backup as some people need it.

From my dropbox, so hit it easy.
Nice, know of some that will appreciate this.

And he at least did something that could be useful until we get a real stock rom .zip or .tar

It's not, it's a backup. That's not the point, it's still useful to many users that have possibly screwed their device but still have access to recovery. Especially until something official comes out.
will there be a stock package on odin different than just the stock boot image? my phone is bricked for no apparent reason(see my thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1731416) and flashing the stock boot image in odin does nothing. i Also cant get into CWM to flash my backup...

Eventually there will be, but a lot of people [to include major developers] still don't have the phone yet, so we'll have to be patient. I looked over it, though currently are you able to get into recovery still or no? Additionally did you try re-flashing the cwm recovery in odin?
I can get into download mode but not into CWMR. The only thing i have tried flashing since it bricked is boot-stock-sprint-sph-l710.tar (which sort of worked the first time). I'm at work and don't have my phone on me so i guess i could try flashing CWMR again later but this is really weird. Thanks for the reply. This is my first Sprint phone, but on my Droid X we had a program similar to Odin where you could push a .sbf file that included everything stock and basically just reset your phone to stock. Do these exist for Sprint phones? The . SBF files were usually rather large(around 350mb or so) but the boot-stock-sprint-sph-l710.tar is around 10 or 15 mb so i know it doesn't include all the system files...
Thanks again

Lol i just replied the same thing over on another thread he posted in. Stop jumping around pizzle! if you can get into Odin chances are good you can flash cwm and then restore the backup
hahaha sorry about that. When I try and boot into recovery it looks like its about to go to Recovery and then freezes on the Galaxy S III screen. I'll try reflashing CWMR when I get home...Thanks for the advice
So is a back up a nandriod?
I have made a few but never resorted one, you just flash it same as a ROM and your done?
I misplaced my stock nandroid when I flashed CM10 build 2 and my extFs SD card had to be formatted to use again, I was sure I had in on PC but can't find it.
Thanks!
I really wanna use this kernel/custom kernels, but I give up! Constant force closing and crashes for me Now I'm wondering, did I do something wrong during the root process? I rooted my device a couple weeks ago using this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1771687 (Root without tripping flash counter), followed by flashing Team Sonic's TouchWiz Rom, and then now, recently as of a little over a week ago I started using Cyanogen Mod 10. Did I miss a step in between which is causing so many problems with installing a custom kernel on my phone? Lean kernel worked earlier around the 8/20-25 nightlies, but now everything's pretty much a bust

if it was me, which btw am running CM10/LeanKernel, I would use odin to flash back to a rooted stock app, then install NEWEST CWM, and try again, I have had no issues EVER using the combo's that you are using. Also, I NEVER flash a kernel on a new rom until the rom has booted correctly, then reboot and flash whatever compatible kernel.
Good Luck.

Okay I'll do that, but tell me this. How did you come to CM10 exactly? What steps did you do? I want to see if you did something different from me and I may have sent wrong somewhere.
I simply rooted installed freegs3, wiped data and caches and all, then I flashed cm10. Was that the wrong way? Should I go back to stock and restart the process? Because right now for one, custom kernels are giving me strange issues. Also, a ktoonz kernel dev told me my log cat pointed towards corrupt partition or Rom, but I'm using cm10
How do I go back to stock basically? Can you link me to some guides and/or videos? I'm on the T-Mobile galaxy s3. The reason I ask is because I'm mobile and can't search for some reason but I'd like to read up on it before I do it

I started here, READ EVERY LINE in a separate window, so you can reference back in forth between the windows. And do it STEP BY STEP. Once you are rooted and using the stock rom, back that up, so you can revert back to if you crash, once you have those 2 done, get the newest copy of Clockwork, install it. (by the way, the flash counter will tick you using Odin) so make sure you wipe the tick counter before installing any custom roms. Now get CM10 from the thread, install, do not flash the kernel until you have booted the first time, then reboot to recovery and flash kernel of choice. then your set. Now these are MY DIRECTIONS ONLY! and worked for me. So anyone want to add, feel free, or if I missed something, but do NOT slam me for trying to help, again this worked for me, may not for others, but it has been flawless for me. Hope this helps good luck.

Thanks for the input! I just wiped everything properly, other than odining back to stock again because that wasn't really necessary I thought since I did everything right, maybe? Well, I don't know lol. I don't have time to go back to stock atm, so I wiped all things including external/internal sd, used superwipe and just flashed a touchwiz rom, by xquizit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1843409 UVALH2 and flashed the kernel for touchwiz by ktoonz and it is running smooth and solid. So, now, I'm going to go back and flash CM from scratch superwiping and all because I have now confirmed ktoonz's kernels work, and for some odd reason it wasn't working with my CM setup, so I'm going try it again from start and see if it works on CM, and go from there. I'll report back either ways in case anyone is having this problem. If I still have the same issue back on CM, I'll live with it or come back to touchwiz. I kinda like it Weird. Now I am a tad confused, you have UVALH2 on the phone already, and you want to flash UVALH2? or did you typo? Good luck my friend.
BTW, I do not like stock roms, so to me CM10 is for sure better. Faster also.
There is no wrong way to root. I bought my phone, didn't even set it up. Downloaded the toolkit, rooted and flashed a custom recovery, then flashed CM10. You didn't miss any steps, and you didn't do anything in the wrong order.
Your radio and ROM do NOT have to match.

Yeah, I know all this, but I wanted to ask in case I may have missed something. Even when you're pretty Android savvy when it comes to rooting and whatnot, you do miss things on occasion. In this instant I didn't, but I was hoping I did because a bunch of custom kernels won't work on my phone with CM10! Trinity worked well, so I'm waiting for those. It must be some specific chip related issue because I'm not the only one. Anyways, thanks everyone!

pretty sure having a custom recovery isn't your issue if you are to the point of wiping caches and flashing kernels. The OP is asking how to wipe a stock ROM off and get CM on his/her phone i'm pretty sure.

No i do not. I tried rooting my phone and it didn't take, and you need to root before CWM right? I had CWM when I was on Uvalh2 but when I went through the process of Uvalh3 I guess I lost it. Should I go ahead and do it? I have the zip file in my phone, still.
I should also mention that when I go into recovery the android dude is fallen over, dead. I'm guessing that's a bad sign.
That just means you're on stock recovery. Odin a rooted rom which you can find in the dev forums (root without tripping flash), then install twrp or cwm, then flash cm10, then flash desired radio.

Hi, guys and girls.
I know this question sounds stupid, and someone might say: "Duuuh, use the seach-function!" - Well, I have, but as a new member it's pretty hard finding the things that I need when there's so many sections and such.
Now for my question:
At Christmas I recieved a Samsung Galaxy Gio. The phone is cool, and I like it a lot. However, I do wanna use a custom ROM. Can anybody tell me (step by step, please) how to do so? I have read the "Big thread For New Users", but somehow I managed to get lost in all of the fine new words.
I have done it before on my HTC Touch Diamond, (but I dropped it and now it won't start again) but I really can't figure out how to do so this time - and it would be sad to ruin my new phone by doing stuff I don't know anything about.
So, could anybody please be nice and tell me how to install a custom ROM? And please keep in mind that I'm a huuuuge newbie
I'm using Android 2.3.6
Thanks in advice.
Dennis
P.S. Would I be able to "revert" everything back to how it is now? Is there a way to "unroot" (I know there is, just not how to), and can the default ROM from Samsung be found anywhere?
okay so first DON'T use Rom Manager because it bricks your gio.
if you want to flash a custom rom you need to flash clockwork recovery. after that download "ext4 formatter" and flash it with cwm recovery (install zip->choose zip). download a custom rom and flash it in the same way as "ext4 formatter". wipe data and restart your phone... (clockwork mod recovery, ext4 formatter and custom roms can be found in development section)
if you don't like all these custom roms you can install the stock rom by downloading a stock rom on sammmobile.com and flashing with odin.
Sorry for my bad englisch
You made it sound so easy
Please keep in mind that I'm at huuuge newb. I don't know what half of the words you mentioned means. Could you please explain it a little more detailed?

You don't to be a delevoper if you want to flash your phone. It's really very easy if you read a few infos about this. One post above you have a list of things that you have to do but it's easy. You can do this in about 10 minutes. Very important is: you must know what you do. And do this ! Here you can view a lot of tutorials and links of roms, recorecys etc. :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1623393
Ok, so I guess this is what I'm gonna do:
1. Doing a hard reset of my phone (wipe).
2. Root my Gio using this guide.
3. Downloading and flashing a custom ROM (I'm very unsecure on this step, please give a detailed "guide").
4. After flashing (is flashing the same thing as installing?), I start up my Gio and I'm gonna do a hard reset.
Is this the way to do it?

1. Not needed to do before flashing but it doesn't hurt either
2. No need for ROOT if you plan flashing a custom rom. 100% of custom roms have root pre-installed.
3. Download the file, put it on your SD card (do not put it in any folder, just on your sdcard), go into recovery mode, chose install zip from sdcard, navigate to the file, chose it, chose Yes and wait for it to finish, do wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition from CWM and you're done!
4. Yes, start it up (it takes quite long time to boot it for the first time) and you may do the hard reset but i have never done it and my Gio is still working perfectly. And yes flashing and installing is basically the same thing.
P.S I know how you feel exactly atm. When i got my gio and learned about flashing custom roms and rooting, I was scared as well but now i have installed many roms and now it is like a normal thing for me. Have fun and DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER!
Don't forget to click thanks if it helped

Ok, so I guess this is what I'm gonna do:
1. Doing a hard reset of my phone (wipe).
2. Root my Gio using this guide.
3. Downloading and flashing a custom ROM (I'm very unsecure on this step, please give a detailed "guide").
4. After flashing (is flashing the same thing as installing?), I start up my Gio and I'm gonna do a hard reset.
Is this the way to do it?

The first two steps are right. after that you are downloading the clockwork mod recovery (also called cwm) and the ext4 formatter from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1421650. now you are entering the stock recovery. turn off your phone and restart it but hold the power and home button at boot. now flash the cwm zip file (in the thread is all explained how to do). restart the phone and enter the cwm recovery by holding power and home button at boot. go to "install zip" -> "choose zip" and choose the ext4 formatter zip file. okay now wipe data. download a custom rom and install it in cwm like the other zip files. wipe again data. now restart your phone.
and tadaaa it should work
ps: if you are from Germany (i think so because of your name) you can write me a pn if you need help and i can explain it in German
Sorry for my bad englisch
Hi,
Thanks for both of the answers - However, there is something that I'm confused about now. Jyrx, you say that I don't need to root if it's a custom ROM, because custom ROMs already have done a root. But emyaz tells me that it should be done. Aren't most ROMs from xda custom? Fx. this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2062676 (CyanogenMod 10.1 [BETA 2.5]) - is this a custom ROM? If it is, I don't need to ROOT, right?
emyaz, unfortunately no - I'm Danish, and I know very little German

Yes, like I said every custom rom has root. I think what emyaz thinks is that root is essential and if you don't install a custom rom you should root your phone. And your example has root and it doesn't need to be rooted.
EDIT: On XDA yes, there are basically only custom roms. If a rom isn't a custom rom or doesn't have a root then it is most certainly said in the topic.
You need to root your device before you start flashing roms. But is it nessesary to flash an ext4 formatter. I didn't do it. I do not have any problems. Where do you need it for?

Now I'm confused. One says that I don't need to flash, but others says that I need to.
I didn't root my phone before flashing roms. And I also haven't used ext4 formatter and it is working fine. So I don't know about that really.

Well I think for safety, root it. If you don't probably nothing will happen but I'm not sure, but if you do then nothing bad will happen either.
Half of the people answering give the wrong answers.
- root
- install custom recovery
- backup
Flash ext4formatter (cleans all partitions and mounts as ext4, no wipes needed, only use this first time installing a rom or after using ODIN to restore to stock)
- install rom
-reboot

what i mean was that you need to root your device to install the cwm recovery. so the first step is to root your device and then install cwm recovery. sorry if i confused you
all custom roms are rooted...

There's two boot screens next to eachother
Haha, oh God, I think I'm gonna wait until I have researched a little bit more...
When I tried to unbrick it, I flashed a wrong stock ROM (somehow Odin let me do it )
I need a really detailed guide on how to do it (install a custom ROM).. I've been trying to unbrick my phone for the last 1½ hours
Fortunately it all works fine now. I just need a detailed guide or something so I don't **** up
it wasn't bricked, thats the most wrong used term here on XDA.
