[Q] Found my N7 hot with unresponsive power button and drained battery - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hello All,
I've had my N7 since release so I can't take it back to futureshop for a quick/easy return.
I went to pick up my N7FHD today and found that it was very hot (screen and back) and that I couldn't turn it on by pressing the power button. I had to hold the power button and the down button to finally get the device to respond. Over a span of ~4hours it went from 90% battery to 35%.
Now that it's back on, it's nice and cool and the power button is responding. Any idea what caused this? Should I call Asus?
Thanks!
RRhaire

Maybe a rouge app killing the cpu.

I bought a refurb N7 a week ago, and right out of the box with no apps installed other than the stock OS it's exhibiting this behavior. Whatever this is I don't think it's an app.

Power off/power on it's own (Alpha 3 CM9)

So A few days ago my phone started to turn off and turn back on randomly, Its hit or miss, Just starting to get annoying. Has anyone ran into this? Pretty much when my phone is off and I hit the power button it will go to the screen as if I'm holding the power button to do a screen shot. I'm pretty sure it's not my power button sticking. I think there is just something else going on.
Also when it does it when my charger is hooked up it will keep starting up and turning off till I unplug it.
I wasn't sure if it was a app I had downloaded so I deleted the last few apps I had downloaded, But still will turn on and off.
Anyone had anything?

I was having the same thing happening with cm9. I went ahead and tried out BLUKUBAN rom..very sweet one at that. better battery life. Try it out.
Well I updated to alpha 4. Still have the the random power off like I'm holding the power button down. So I'm thinking its something internal.
Guess ill unroot and take it back to sprint. Dang it!

I'm having the exact same issues. It started 2 days ago. I'm watching my phone turn off and on, on its own right now while plugged in.
Are you sure its not a bad power button? I found that even if i barely tap the power button without fully pressing it in, it will trigger a button press action, or a button hold action.
Please update if you resolve.

[Q] Power Issues... Even in recovery/download mode

Phone randomly turns off/reboots (mostly reboots). Sometimes the phone won't go past the "SAMSUNG" screen on boot. I booted the phone into recovery and download mode multiple times but it'll reboot after a minute or two.
I've tried another battery and still had the same issue. I've removed the battery and held the power button down to discharge power. I've opened up the phone, blew the dust out, and made sure that the power button was not getting stuck. I'm fairly certain it's not a rogue app causing the issue, but I've factory reset the phone to stock.
Please advise!

if you have a sd card, sometimes a funky sd card will cause this as well. remove yours for a while to check if its causing your issue
Sounds like the same problem I was having. Take your finger and lightly move it up and down over the power button.. if it acts up or reboots it could be the button issue..

I was having the EXACT same issue. I thought it might be the recent upgrade to the cm11 nightlies since before it was once a week but now it's just non-stop. Is the issue the actual power button switch or the plastic buttons?

For me it was the power button itself.. Read my post on how to fix the issue yourself if you dont want to take your phone into Sprint

Fixed (kind of )
I've taken my phone apart before to replace the speaker/audio jack module after my headphone jack stopped working in one ear (also a common s3 problem). I did as suggested and added a piece of paper wedged in between the button and the button switch. Surprisingly the switch was perfectly clicky so any problem will have to be internally such as corrosion or just worn out. The problem seemed to have been fixed (kind of, not really) as the phone turned on and wouldn't freak out when I rubbed the power/hold button. I got all my data off the phone successfully. The buttons themselves are pretty cheap online but I don't want to have to solder considering I have an upgrade. I'll just get an S5 whenever they are available. Thanks for the help.

I'd like to thank everyone for their suggestions. I determined that it was in fact a power button issue.
My "FIX" (for anyone with similar issues):
Temporary:
I removed the logic board from the phone and flicked the button up and down and that helped a little with the button's hypersensitivity. Because a slight tap would make the button "stick" and power off, I took apart the phone and physically removed the plastic power button. I could hit the button if necessary with a small screwdriver or my watch strap thingy, but I did my best to keep the battery from dying out. As for dealing with a lack of "lock" button, I installed an xposed module that let me remap my volume up button as a lock button.
Permanent:
My mother recently upgraded her phone and gave me her S3. Unfortunately it had a cracked screen. I removed her logic board and swapped it out with what was in phone and reactivated her phone as mine.
Thanks for everyone's help, and hopefully this can help someone else too!

[Q] Screen doesn't turn on!

Dears, help me please!
I have my nexus 7 for 3 months. It was working pretty fine before... BUT... last thursday I left it charging overnight, I woke up turned the tablet alarme off and put it on a backpack to travel.
When I tried to turn it on the screen just did nothing!! The strange thing is: when I got mail it notifies me... the pulse light is active but the screen doesn't show.
I tried to charge it, hold the power button, hold the power + volume down buttons and nothing solved.
Anyone has/had the same problem?
I have the same problem. It happened a couple times already but I could not figure out why it happens. When I push the power button long enough it just restarts. It happens only when its laying around a couple hours like over night.
The tablet returned from the repair.
It seems like they changed the mainboard. Sadly there was something behind the camera glas and there were scratches on the screen. So they had to send it in again. Then they also changed the screen. All this took about 3 weeks.
I suggest claim for repair its definitely a hardware issue. Now my Nexus is running flawless and I am waiting for the Lollipop update.
You could also just try holding volume down + power for about 30 seconds. I've had a couple of freezes before where holding down the power button did nothing. But, holding down power + volume down worked. This is assuming you weren't flashing or doing something else, this is only if you were using the tablet as normal and it just suddenly won't turn on.

Home, menu and back buttons become non-responsive

Since day two of owning this tablet, I have noticed that on rare occasions, the back, menu and home buttons become non-responsive to touch. Neither do they illuminate. All the while, the screen works fine. The only way ive found to restore the function of these buttons, is to restart the device. I wondered whether anyone else has been experiencing this issue. I had to exchange mine today at John Lewis. So far, no issues with new one.

Hi, I have the same problem. In addition my power button does not give the option to restart or shutdown anymore.
Sometimes I have the functionality back for a brief moment, after the tablet has been dorment for a couple of hours, but after a few minutes the butttons become unresponsive again.

Tab S 10.5 shut down

Moments ago my Tab S shut down after trying to exit a game. Suddenly the game froze, screen went dark for a minute while the capacitive buttons stayed lit and gave feedback. Then it was dead. Kept pressing the power button but it would not turn on. After doing some searching I tried pressing the power button while pressing volume up and fortunately it turned on again. I did notice the back was a bit warm but not HOT. Anyone have a clue as to what may have happened?
Funnily enough the exact same thing happened on my s5 when trying to exit from an app. Only happened once, but could never figure out why.

I had my original tab freeze on me several times. Got a replacement from John Lewis'. No problems with new one. See if u can get yours exchanged. It might be a batch issue
Thanks guys. I couldn't replicate the issue, even after opening up a few games and leaving them all open at the same time. I should be ok.
