Home, menu and back buttons become non-responsive - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since day two of owning this tablet, I have noticed that on rare occasions, the back, menu and home buttons become non-responsive to touch. Neither do they illuminate. All the while, the screen works fine. The only way ive found to restore the function of these buttons, is to restart the device. I wondered whether anyone else has been experiencing this issue. I had to exchange mine today at John Lewis. So far, no issues with new one.

Hi, I have the same problem. In addition my power button does not give the option to restart or shutdown anymore.
Sometimes I have the functionality back for a brief moment, after the tablet has been dorment for a couple of hours, but after a few minutes the butttons become unresponsive again.

[Q] My One X sometimes has trouble "waking up", has anyone else had this?

I have recently encountered a problem with my hox, where, if I press the power button, the screen doesn't awake. It's a little weird, because the back home app switcher buttons do light up if it is dark enough around me and, after pushing them a few times, the volume buttons respond as well.
I haven't fully tested it, but it seems like when I wait like a minute or so, maybe more, the screen does finally wake up. I have also held the power button several times to restart it while it was like this and then the screen doesn't light up until the sim unlock screen pops up.
I have yet to factory reset the phone etc., but I was wondering if anyone else had run into this problem. I have looked around the internet, but was unsure what to search for.

Are u using sweep to wake?, that sometimes causes this problem
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Nope, I do not have sweep to wake.
Well, after a while of being okay, the issue is showing up again. If I press the power button it does wake the phone somehow (back, home, tasks lights light up, volume can be altered), but the screen wont come on. And when it's one of those rare moments that it does turn on the UI flies everywhere, making it literary uncontrolable, until at some point the screen just turns itself off.
I am not running any custom things, everything is stock. I tried a factory reset without erasing the SD storage. I also have just sent an email to HTC, but it being weekend and all I still have to wait a day or two.
Any other things I could try?
Never had this problem with the HOX.
Only with Xperia Arc and X10 when a heavy task ran in the background

Hi, I was wondering what did you do regarding the lockscreen problem. I'm having exactly the same problem here. I've already done a factory reset but it did not solve the issue. From time to time I'm not able to unlock the phone.
Please HELP!!!
It sometimes happens to me, recently after clearing the clock and weather apps and widgets. I don't know what it is.

Power button on GN jelly bean

I sometimes (1 out of 20 times) have problem with the power button to wake up the screen, it only happens once a while, so I press the button, nothing happened, and I press another time, then it woke.
I personally thought it is a software issue rather than hardware. Do you guys have similar experience.
Yep, all the time.
Same thing for me.

I also have the same issue but its rare.
thank god, then I should not panic about my power button at all
Ditto. I posted this in the JellyBean general thread too.
This is one of many things wrong with JB. There's still microlag, the keyboard has taken a dramatic step backwards (missed autocorrections, randomly repeated letters and words!, and backspacing glitches galore; it did none of these things with ICS keyboard), and the aforementioned power button issue.
We really need 4.1.2 that addresses these issues.
Noticing this too.
I've noticed the power key thing two times. A second press woke the phone just fine.
No issues with keyboard here though.

+1 for power button. Was starring to think it was hardware til I read this

Same here.
Happnes very regularly for me though... More times than not.
Me too

I noticed with mine that when I hit the power button and touched the screen where the sliders will be, I feel vibration. From there it will take another 4-5 hits to unlock and sometimes just time.

Lol same Here. The keyboard fails too lol
Never happened me before even if I press on power button very fast while the screen is on (screen goes off and on again).
I'm using swiftkeyx as my keyboard. So I feel fine for both.
Yep, happens every now and then to me too.
ya...happens once in a while...thought i was the only one though...
my phone started to do this a couple of days ago. (I was running JB) I went ahead and reset my phone back to stock ICS and the power button still needs to be pushed multiple times in order for the phone to wake up or turn off. I called Verizon and they are sending me a replacement phone.
It seems to be a general design issue with the power button. Because of the nature of that switch (it seems to rock a little) you have to press the button much harder if you press it on the ends. If you press it in the middle, the switch actuates essentially 100% of the time.

[Q] Found my N7 hot with unresponsive power button and drained battery

Hello All,
I've had my N7 since release so I can't take it back to futureshop for a quick/easy return.
I went to pick up my N7FHD today and found that it was very hot (screen and back) and that I couldn't turn it on by pressing the power button. I had to hold the power button and the down button to finally get the device to respond. Over a span of ~4hours it went from 90% battery to 35%.
Now that it's back on, it's nice and cool and the power button is responding. Any idea what caused this? Should I call Asus?
Thanks!
RRhaire
Maybe a rouge app killing the cpu.

I bought a refurb N7 a week ago, and right out of the box with no apps installed other than the stock OS it's exhibiting this behavior. Whatever this is I don't think it's an app.

Tab S 10.5 shut down

Moments ago my Tab S shut down after trying to exit a game. Suddenly the game froze, screen went dark for a minute while the capacitive buttons stayed lit and gave feedback. Then it was dead. Kept pressing the power button but it would not turn on. After doing some searching I tried pressing the power button while pressing volume up and fortunately it turned on again. I did notice the back was a bit warm but not HOT. Anyone have a clue as to what may have happened?
Funnily enough the exact same thing happened on my s5 when trying to exit from an app. Only happened once, but could never figure out why.

I had my original tab freeze on me several times. Got a replacement from John Lewis'. No problems with new one. See if u can get yours exchanged. It might be a batch issue
Thanks guys. I couldn't replicate the issue, even after opening up a few games and leaving them all open at the same time. I should be ok.

Help please - really annoying issue

Hope someone can help, I've searched but couldn't find the answer.
I have a really annoying problem in that if I lock my phone then unlock it, if i open an already open app, the bottom key bar (which contains the back key, home key and open apps key) is unresponsive apart from the home button. If I'm in messaging, the keyboard will be as well. If I press the back button for example, it shows it being pressed but does nothing. Sometimes the Google search thing pops up when you hold the home button. To remedy the only way is to press home then open again without locking the screen. Any ideas?
Ya samething happens to my phone also but not always. Wait buddy you will get more bugs like this its sony.
RichRoberts44, what is your FW? Do you have root? Did U unlock bootloader? More info is needed to even try to find a solution
This happens to me also from time to time and I don't even use the key bar, I use gestures with a 3rd party app. When this happens only home gesture works. It does happen rarely though.
The same problem began on my phone two weeks ago. Over the last two weeks, it increased. I had to restart my phone all the time. Besides the two issues you describe, I had two additional issues:
The clock on the lock screen didn't always appear when I managed to turn on the phone.
When I put the phone to sleep, I often couldn't turn it back on for several minutes.
Over the two weeks, all the problems occurred still more often. At the end, it was so annoying, that I backed up all my stuff and did a factory reset and recovered the backup. Now it is working perfectly again.
I run 14.4.A.0.157
are y0u r00ted 0r what?h0w ab0ut the running apps?is it t00 many?
