Wow...days of frustration.
*Solved?* So I flashed back to ICS to see if my memory (of having a dark phone app and contacts editor) was correct. Turns out it was. I was using exDialer with the dark theme (downloaded separately) and while it was still using the default phone app to call, it was skinning it black. In JB I cannot get any dialer to skin the phone to any color other than the bright white. I don't have a solution for that. For now I will stick with ICS.
***Edit: Please note that when I say "dialer" I mean the phone. The dial pad on alternative apps works fine but when I actually place the call a stock phone comes up***
I got the OTA JB 200 update for my Xperia Acro S a couple weeks ago. First thing I noticed was that when I would make a call with exDialer, the stock dialer (Phone) would start up and the call was actually placed through that. Same with dealing with contacts. I can be in exDialer and when i try to edit contacts it opens up the stock contacts app. So then I tried Dialer One. Same thing. WTH? It's easy for me to see this happening because the themes I use in exDialer and/or Dialer one are all dark and the stock apps are bright white!
I figure it's something with this ROM. So I spent two days studying all this stuff on the forum.
I unlock the bootloader
Root the phone
Wipe everything
and flash a stock 211 ROM. (I know I didn't need to root for a stock ROM but if I was screwing around already, might as well)
Guess what? Same behavior with the dialer and contacts. WTH?
Is this just a JB thing?
Please help!

Guess what. That is not a JB thing, it's just a crappy dialer, of course I am referring to your exDialer.

But it was fine in ICS. I also installed DialerOne. Is that considered crappy as well?
Also, when I said I wiped everything I mean I had data, cache, and appslog checked in flash tool. But now that I look more closely I can see that some data was retained on my phone. Could this be the problem?

So right now I'm in dsixda's rom kitchen, trying to pull a few stock apps(phone, dialer, contacts, messaging) from a rooted stock rom(cr 2.13 OTA) to the nightly CM7. It's giving me process.com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly at boot and won't let me past. So I know that the OTA rom is froyo and CM is gingerbread, I'm assuming thats my problem. so that being said, first am I right? What do I need to do to make this work? and where can I get a stock gingerbread rom? can I simply drag and drop phone.apk, dialer.apk, etc. or is there more to it?

I don't think that will work. Espresso roms are sense, cm roms are not, they have different frameworks and such. First off, I'm PRETTY sure phone.apk is just the backend to sms/dialer/radio/etc., so you can leave that alone. Why do you want to move those apps over to cm7? Theming? Messaging and contacts I KNOW won't work because they require the tmobile framework resources that cm roms don't have, same with the dialer. You won't be able to move messaging either, since it has different coding from froyo to gingerbread. Contacts and dialer you MIGHT be able to move over if you ALSO move over the com.htc.resources.apk from /system/framework to the same location on the cm rom. You also might have to move the com.tmobile.framework.apk or something like that from /system/app to the same location on cm7 as well.
That may or may not work, it'll more likely just cause force closes everywhere since htc apps are very dependent on other apps and proprietary framework resources that stock android doesn't have.
I don't understand why you would want any of that. To each his own, but I think cyanogen has made all of that stuff better and simpler. The only thing he needs to add is the ability to end the call from the notification bar. I thought sense had a good idea there

I'm not knocking CM I do like it, it's just still buggy. For example in his contacts when entering a new a number with the keyboard the numbers are haywire and dont work, so you have to use the touchscreen. The main thing with the dialer is I miss the T9 speeddial, and messaging is a bit buggy as well, plus I like the old mms.apk ui better. For now I found out about dialer 1 on the market and will use that, but hopefully when it's all said and done things will be better on CM. Can anyone suggest a good messaging app from the market? contacts too maybe?

I use GoSMS. It's free, and you can theme it and such.
Alright. and almost forgot, the stock music player... any way of porting that? I really like the original widget better, and I miss controlling it from the lock screen. I want the old calendar back as well. thoughts?
i missed the dial by name from the SenseUI - this app is a GREAT replacement, you swipe from side to side to get to recent/favs/dial, and it's free: https://market.android.com/details?id=kz.mek.DialerOne

this is available in the later CM7 nightlies (30+) - you can hold the volume buttons to do prev/next, and you can even have the controls on the lock screen...

This is a replacement contacts called Phonebook 2.0. It's pretty cool.
Also, pretty much any of the widgets in sense are sense only ;p
Thanks guys. Yep figured out about the music player, thats good. Already using dialer one, I like it better actually. Now I'm missing the calendar. I really miss being able to see when stuff is coming up on the old widget. Any body got anything on that?

Anyone? It seems no one will ever comment on the posts I make at their forums? I am testing cyanogen 7.1 out for a bit.
Some background info. Doubled wiped everything except sdcard. downloaded a fresh cyanogen 7.1 and flashed it. I have the GPS fix, and the gapps thing flashed with tiamat 4.0.8
So can someone tell me how to either fix this or why it does this?
This is a huge dealbreaker.. It compresses whatever photo i try to attach and it losses quality of the picture... I like the stock android and having to use handcent to send my mms seems like a *WTF* should i do this moment...
Apps like Handcent and Go SMS are better than the stock messaging app anyway. Why would you be willing to throw away the entire ROM over the messaging app when you can use more powerful messaging apps that don't compress the image AND have more customization options?
I've used stock CM, Handcent and Go SMS. By far my favorite one is Go SMS. Way better than the one that comes with CM.
I have used them both. I dislike them. Its just the feel. And the popups I just dislike the whole thing even after i messed with the settings to get rid of what i dont like. The options arent there and i do dislike them.. Also it wont send multiple split messages it freezes my ability top send messages and i need to reboot my phone....
And the Messaging app isn't the only issue.
Btw not my first or second time using CM either..

Huh? I don't get any pop ups whatsoever on mine. Not quite sure what you mean. And what options are you looking for? Out of all the ROMs I've tried CMseems to have the most flexibility and most customization options. What exactly are you looking for in a ROM? Handcent and Go SMS also provide more flexibility and customization options than the stock messaging app. Let me know what you're looking for and maybe I can point you toward a ROM that fits.

Its not that I'm looking for felxibility i just want to get my mms to stop sending at low resolutions.
It may be the user agent but every one of them makes me receive a pic at 8XX by ^XX resolutions..
I just want the stock one to have correct mms. And preferably a mms with a user agent for my phone or a equivalent phone. I have been searching for days and no one seems to post a fix. All the fixes seem to be for tmo for what i can find :/
Well I understand that you want your stock messaging app to work properly. However, I don't know a means to directly resolve the problem. Test with Handcent/Chomp SMS/Go SMS, reflash your ROM/kernel, update your radio, wimax, nv, etc., and if worse comes to worse....completely unroot your phone back to bone stock. Seems ridiculous that something that drastic is needed to fix your issue. But I did that as a last resort for my phone and it fixed my 2 month long SMS/MMS issue that I had been having.
Here OP try this. Is splits and the limit is big

Work out for you?
I've been using my samsung GN for a month now and loving it. This is my first transition into the Android platform so please excuse my ignorance if my questions seem trivial.
I haven't unlocked or rooted my phone yet, but I'm itching to do so. I just had a few questions before I try it.
1. Unlocking the bootloader will wipe out my entire phone. I'm assuming this means it will similar to opening up a new phone. Since I've used this phone for a month now, I've put all my phone contacts in, including getting all the profile photos for my friends and contacts. Since I started a GMail account, can all this be recovered once gmail syncs back to the phone. I'm assuming this is for the calendar as well. Also is there a way to backup and restore anything else... ie txt messages, apps, settings, etc. I read somewhere something about titanium backup (can this be done the first time I unlock the bootloader?)
2. One of the main reasons why I want to unlock/root is to be able to put in some custom themes and icons. Am I correct to say this is only possible after I root the phone? Or can this be done on the stock unlocked form?
3. The other reason I want to do this is to see if there are any custom roms or kernels that can help with the UI interface to make it a bit more smooth and not as stuttery. (I know this is a debated discussion), however I came from the iphone and it is noticable and irritating to me (YMMV) Does anyone know of a custom kernel or ROM that will be able to improve on this?
Thank you for your help... I'm still somewhat hesitant to do the process. I'd just like to find out as much as I can before I try it.
You can change icons and launcher themes by using a custom launcher such as ADW or Go Launcher (the two with the most themes) but this will only change the icons of your apps. If you want to get into custom colors and buttons and such, you will need to root.
Gmail will sync all of your contacts back, but the pictures will be low resolution (unless they are your friends on G+) to fix this, you can redo the pictures by hand or download an app called Haxsync for facebook sync which I've found works fairly well.
You can download "SMS backup and restore" to back up and restore your texts.
Market will have your paid apps saved, but write a list of your free apps as market will not save those.
Also your settings such as wifi networks will be remembered.
And yes, custom kernels and roms will help with smoothness, promise
Josh, thanks a lot for the advice, I'll look into the apps before I start to unlock this puppy!!!

Superior in what way?
Thanks a lot!
The standard samsung app is better than stock but graphically deviates too much from holo.
I immediately downloaded the application that you have shown me, but unfortunately doesn't work ... After having opened app it crashes.
In particular, he shows me the list of all messages (distinguishing read from unread) but when I try to go into a conversation stops everything.
I use GoLauncherEx on Samsung official 4.0.3 rom. When the application crashes, even golauncher crashes! For a few seconds the screen is all black (it show me only tray bar)!
I know that GoLauncherEx isn't optimized for ics but is the only launcher that lets me create folders in the program list (I have much application and I need it!).
Actually ICS isn't very stable on my device and I'm almost regretting gingerbread!
I can do anything about it?
Thanks again for your support,
I hope one day I'd help forum people.

That is very strange. Which firmware did you install? I installed XEO (polish version) and didn't get a single crash or problem what so ever. I had a few problems in rooting it, though (needed to wipe it first and re-flash the orginial ICS firmware before rooting to get the root rights recognized). But once that got fixed, everything was and still is perfect.
Or maybe it is because of the go launcher ex? I was using TW the entire afternoon (13.03) without crashes. At night I installed Apex launcher as system launcher and no crashes either (one day running), very low battery consumption and awesome looks. You can add the ICS Theme Pack from kovdev to get the ICS icons.
Hello element!
I've installed the XEO firmware, then polish, just like you.
I have not done the wipe but updated via OTA.
I had already installed GoLauncher. When I've upgraded I've selected Golauncher instead of Tw.
Currently I have encountered frequent application crashes and one total block of the system. The battery, to be honest, I can not tell if it lasts more than gingerbread why I used the phone a lot for various customizations.
I do not know if the problem is that I did not do a wipe.
If he continues to give me problems I do a backup. After I install the rom again.
Tonight I remove the battery and after power on. Tomorrow, we'll update on my test.
PS The biggest problem is GoSmsPro. it sends multiple messages at one time. If I send you a message, you will receive two. I do not know how to solve.
PS2 The root I did with Odin and had no problems ...
Thanks for the help,
Hello!
As I promised you I a write updates.
I solved the problem of low stability: I made a deepclean and then installed applications without syncing (I installed all the applications manually).
Now I have one problem, the phone crashes when I try to change the background. If you have any idea: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23727272#post23727272
For the rest new rom does not seem bad ...
Thanks for your help,

Hey, check it out: One so called Tim Hutt put the stock calendar, messaging, and launcher app in the market and they all work just fine for me. The apps are called "Android 4 ICS Messaging SMS", "Android 4 ICS Calendar", and "Android 4 ICS Launcher".
The only bug I have (and it's not a big one) is that the screen doesn't light up when you receive a text message... Perhaps this is because I disabled/removed the official Samsung messaging services though... If you leave the default services enabled, then the screen lights up like normal but you have to select a setting in the ICS messaging app to disable the message receiver because then both the Samsung app and the ICS app will both write the text message to the database and you'll have duplicate incoming messages. Just go to settings and scroll to the very bottom to see what I mean... Enable that option if you don't remove the Samsung services/apps.

Hi all,
My phone is rooted. Not a fan of the Sense 4.0 SMS/MMS app. I know I can download the default ICS 4.0.3 MMS.apk from the market.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.concentriclivers.mms.com.android.mms
When I go to install it, it says it will overwrite the existing application. Before I get reckless...
Couple questions:
- Why is there no existing mms.apk in /system/app ? I can't find it. Does HTC call it something different or...?
- How do I backup the current Sense version in case I screw this up and need to restore it?
- Is the Sense one tightly integrated into the rest of Sense? Will it break other apps, widgets...?
So far I got this working.
1. installed stock ICS SMS from market
2. backed up and removed /system/app/Message+CRC_1.apk
3. rebooted phone
Haven't tested MMS nor any sense features that might bomb (I hope not)
I'll update thread if there are any problems and I need to roll this back
Any Update
Hey. Just wondering if you had any update on how this worked? Everything still fine? I want to go to the ICS MMS app, cause the sense one isn't as nice.

I use it daily, the SMS app works perfectly. Love this change.
The HTC SMS widgets that display your messages on your desktop may not work (don't think mine do) but this is easily remedied by just finding other widgets in the market etc. Just don't put the default HTC ones on your desktop.

No. The stock ICS app does not play nice with the stock Sense app, you can't have them both on the phone at the same time. Its not like when you install GOSMS or something.
I had to actually delete the sense app right off the phone completely for it to work properly. Otherwise I had strange problems such as messages being sent twice.
Since I physically deleted the sense app there is no going back without re-installing the sense APK.
Did you save the stock apk? No joke one of my hesitations is the messaging app. If I can switch to stock ICS for messaging I may be ordering mine yet tonight.

Honestly no why would i? I updated this post to be kind but I'm not building something here, this was for my own use and it works perfectly. I'd that's not what you're looking to hear, find another thread. I won't lose sleep at night.
As for backing up the original sense app, yes I did see step 2 above. I used adb for this just pull the file.
Again this works perfectly If anyone cares to try it. nothin to lose, if you don't like it just put the sense file back and reboot.
I installed both the calendar and the sms app today and they seem to work fine. Haven't tried mms. Haven't uninstalled anything yet, will see if I run into trouble. Thanks for posting readk, been searching for this but didn't find it until now
EDIT: Ran into problems immediately of course where pressing the Messaging app launched the HTC Messages app. Following your instructions for backup and removal seems to have done the trick though. Next step will be to do the same for the calendar
