I had done without it for like a year so I thought I'd update my device to jelly bean via Kies. Did it, hated it... but since I'm a moron and didn't do a backup, i was just gonna live with it. So i rooted and thought "maybe this is a good time to try out cyanogenmod."
Wrong.
First of all I couldn't for the life of me make heads or tails of the docs on wiki.cyanogenmod/w/Install_CM_for_hercules. Then after following docs on androidlegend/cyanogenmod-10-1-custom-rom-for-t-mobile-galaxy-s2-android-4-2-1/, all I ever got was a boot loop from 10.x.x. (I tried all the v10's).
Did anyone else have this? Did you manage to get around it? I wound up reverting to stock samsung jelly bean.
what recovery are you using to try and flash this ??
Just flashed CyanogenMod 10.1.2 stable version. I got the boot loop for hours until I followed instructions in a thread somewhere in here. Do full wipe/factory reset, format cache, format data etc. After that you should be fine.

Some of the recoveries are for older versions of the AndroidOS, so an update to your recovery may be the reason why your flash did not work.
My suggestion is to check your recovery's version and try to update to one of the latest recoveries, and then try flashing CM, or whatever ROM again.
This seems like a pretty good overall guide in the General discussion:

You can find out how to flash a ROM here (link from previous thread):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332103
I used TWRP recovery myself, it works for the latest CM builds. If you are interested:

If you are going to the CM route. Make sure you all flash the gapp package so you get google play store.
Hope this helps!

Noting for simple posterity and to blaze a trail.
The 1st link in the quote has a prominent reference to the 2nd link above.
The 2nd link in the quote eventually takes you to this thread. Use that.
That 2nd link in the quote is immediately confusing if you read it literally. Just know that the important part is that the 1st link on that page goes to a thread that suggests an app that doesn't work anymore. That thread suggests you use the thread I linked at the beginning of this bullet point. Confused? Exactly.
The 3rd link in the quote goes to the Team Win Recovery Project release thread. The instructions to install it, on that OP, require root. The best instructions I've found on the process are right here. galaxys2root com/t-mobile-galaxy-s2/how-to-root-icsgb-on-t-mobile-galaxy-s2-sgh-t989/
Thanks for the links, they will be helpful eventually. It does however reveal the nature of this entire game... circular links and old instructions are par for the course. Can't expect anyone to know everything, but if you're diligent, with enough research you can get it done.

Your welcome. The forums for this phone is quite rich with all kinds of solutions, it is best to read up on some of the forums to get an understanding first.
It is actually quite easy to install TWRP. Just download the Goo Manager app, and follow the instruction from TWRP website.
Also, another issue that may cause boot loop maybe that your download maybe corrupted. Check the checksum of the package?
Good luck with getting your ROMs working!

So I am following the steps from QBKing in this youtube video and I get all the way to where I need to install FC09 from the SD Card but I am getting this error: E:\ Can't mount sd card?
I have never flashed this phone before and am trying to get ICS on it. I hope I am going the correct route but right now it reboots fine just can't install FC09 for Superuser access. Any help on this would be greatly appreciate! Thanks.
BTW, I checked several other threads before posting but I didn't find anything particular to Epic and there were several different troubleshooting steps so don't hate because I started a new thread.
Thanks in advance.
I'd like to second the request, as this happened to my phone Thursday evening. I've also looked around forums for the last two days and I can't find anything specifically for the Epic 4G that address this issue.
In my case I was running a Deodexed rooted version of Gingerbread. I got the bug to try something a bit more, so I installed the newest stable release of of Cyanogenmod 10, and it loaded up fine. I had made a nandroid backup of my texts, contacts, calendar, etc., but when I tried to put that info back in I got to the point where my screen showed "E:Can't mount" anything.
Ideas? Thoughts? Prayers?
Blessings & Peace,

In CWM recovery, go to mounts and storage. Then manually mount sdcard. This may help. Also try cycling the card in its socket.

What version of CWM are you trying to install? Try to odin this https://www.dropbox.com/s/yyhp404ixp26o2g/cwm-5.0.2.7-epic4g.tar.md5 then go into recovery and mount your device copy the rom you want or flash the rom that is on your sd card.

I think CM10 uses a different version of CWM and might not be backwards compatable. I could be wrong on this. If I am someone will correct me. If I am not go back to stock reroot do your nandroid restore then back up your text using SMS BACKUP and RESTORE or MY BACKUP PRO
Thanks for the info all!
My phone won't turn on at all anymore. I used instructions I found elsewhere (take out battery, hit power button twice, pop in battery, go to download mode) which worked, then I used the dropbox file and was able to get Odin to flash it, but now I'm still having the issue that my phone won't turn on at all (either with power or power+camera+lower sound button). Any other ideas? At this point I think paying an extra $50 to Sprint to get a new S3 is looking good

If you can still get to download mode, all is not lost. Odin back to stock and try again. Check out the sticky in the development section regarding Odin. And make sure you have a robust cable like a BlackBerry one. They work best. If you can get to download mode, you can almost always come back. Good luck.

If I may ask . . . what specifically should I try? I have Odin 1.87 along with the file listed a few posts above. I can get into download mode, I can flash this, and then . . . nothing. I've tried an HTC cable, but no blackberry cable, and tried it from both computers in my home on different ports. However, I still can't turn the phone on or boot into CWM. Any and all help to specific solutions would be greatly appreciated (please note that while I sound literate and am pretty tech savvy, messing around with my Android OS is something I'm doing pretty much by the seat of my pants!)

Get the victory pit file from the Odin sticky thread and a stock tar file. At this point you probably need to start over. So, using the detailed writeup on how to Odin back to stock, find your way back to bone unrooted stock. Then, depending on what version of stock tar file you chose (el30 or fc09), you then must re-root the device. At this point I would suggest searching YouTube for qbking77 videos on how to root that version. That should get you rooted with a recovery . Then download and flash your ROM of choice. This is a nutshell version, please look for the Odin /unbricking thread. It is far more detailed and directs you to the appropriate files needed.
Edit: This is the thread I speak of. Its a wealth of Odin info.

Oh, also, the cm10 and 9 along other ROMs use MTD/yaffs2 file system. The previous cwm recovery you were flashing is only compatible with BML/RFS or EXT4 which is proprietary/stock. Once you Odin back stock, root, and get the recovery installed, you then can flash CM10 which will convert your system to MTD and install the appropriate CWM recovery for CM for you in the flash. That's why it reboots during the initial flash. Once you're MTD, you have to use mtd versions of ROMs. Spend a bit of time in the development section sticky threads. There are some great explanations for all of this in there.

Actually, now I have a different question - I bit the bullet and ordered two new S3's from Sprint (got a nice $1 on each one with no activation fee). I would rather not lose all of the info stored on my SD card (pics for the most part, but maybe salvaging phone numbers would work, too). Could I put my SD card into my wife's phone (same), boot it up, and copy over all of the files without it affecting her phone?
If I can do that, I'd rather try that first and then happily try the steps from the previous posts.

Sure, but your SD card should be untouched from the Odin process. Assuming you have contacts synced to Google and your pics on the SD card, you should be fine.

Hi there guys first of all let me tell you that i'm new in this forum and i bought a samsung galaxy w a few months ago. What happened was that i knew that new android software won't be released for this model of mine and so i decided to look out for some mods. and i did. The problem was that, unfortunately i am a complete noob at this business so i think i messed up. I know that probably there's a lot of people doing it, but please try to help me, i've try to follow many "how to" post but it seems that everything i do only gets it worst.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1576874
This was the thread i followed, and what i did was to transfer the mod to my sdcard and install it on my samsung. Its was ok, except the fact that i didnt have any of simple things like "play store" and so on, so i downloaded a Zip that i found here in forum that gave me that stuff (less bad).
The thing is, while doing what that thread explained, i didn't downloaded the CWM5 so i didn't had a backup.
My question is: is any way of getting back for my previous software? if it is, can you please gimme some threads where i can do it? believe me, i tried a lot before coming here and ask.
Sorry guys :\ ty
Hi there, do a browser search for SamMobile.com....
You should find all the latest firmwares for the W no matter which country/region you live in......
I believe you will also have to use Samsung's Kies software, but you should be able to obtain that from them too......
Hit thanks if this helped

Just one question though, (if you don't mind answering)....why do you want to go back to stock?.....
Is it due to the problems you've had during flashing the custom ROM?.....
If that's the case, read my thread.....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1941028
It gives easy to follow, step by step instructions for modifying your phone.......
These instructions are how I modified my phone......without ANY issues.....
Press thanks if this helped
From my Galaxy W on CM9 and CWM6 with Tapatalk 2
I believe you flashed the custom ROM using latest CWM (v6), it doesn't matter you didn't downloaded CWM5.
As you said, the problem is you didn't make nandroid backup.
The thread link above, ARCO has made the instruction steps, and the steps included to ask "you" to make nandroid backup first
So, as Keith said, there is a site called sammobile.com and you can download your latest GingerBread firmware (based on your country) and follow the instructions how to flash/install stock ROM carefully, you can find the instructions by following Keith's thread.
Good luck.

To the OP:
You said you didn't have basic stuff like the Play Store. Did you flash GApps after flashing CM9?
For best results with CM9, I *strongly* suggest going the 'Pristine' route: Wipe *everything* (and I do mean *everything*. Even the internal & external SD cards) before flashing CM9. And don't even think of restoring apps you've backed up in GB.
IOW: Not a byte leftover from GB. Except the bootloader and the baseband.

Yes I can. I rooted using that method and all of my apps and data was intact...with SuperSU added so I can utilize apps that require root. I lost no data whatsoever.
I did not install a recovery though because I am wanting to run the rooted stock ROM for the moment and just did not want to bother with recovery at the moment since it is an extra step (just being lazy). Eventually I will get around to installing a recovery and CM since it has always been a favorite of mine.

No problem. Good luck and fun rooting and flashing.
But see, now this http://www.epiccm.org/2012/06/cwm-recovery-on-all-sgs3-lte-variants.html site says to install recovery, then run the root.zip inside of recovery to root.
This is conflicting information, as the how to here at xda says to flash the whole ROM again.

This is one way of rooting. The object behind the original link to XDA was to not flash the trip counter. I only mention XDA because I know this allows you to root JellyBean. Follow the xda verbatim step by step as it has been proven to work for JellyBean. Note that the posting on XDA does not say follow the instructions on the site linked in the quotes, but rather to download and extract the file referenced in question. Then you continue with the procedure as posted on the forum in XDA. Please note the remarks regarding a recovery and JellyBean and the counter being tripped.
There is not always one way to root. Take note that the above link for downloading the file for recovery is older than what has been done on the XDA site. Newer information typically is the safer way to go.

Only downside is that my first attempt tripped the flash counter, but I'm really not worried about it. Now to remove the rogers bloat ware...

Glad it worked. The information here on XDA is much more current than the site you were refering to anyway so your chance of success should lean more toward the updated information.
does anyone know if I can root a Rogers GS3 running stock Jelly Bean on a Mac? I haven't been able to find any info about that online.

Just to let everyone know, the Note 2 LTE (including T-Mobile) will be getting official CyanogenMod 10.1 builds!
Here's the link where the builds will be available: http://get.cm/?device=t0lte
And here's the thread in AT&T forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2105917
Nice! Thanks for the heads up dude.
This solidifies my belief that the Note 2 is undoubtedly the best phone in the world.
Wow just flashed this and my phone will not boot at all. FML...
Fixed.

The only reason I've ever used CyanogenMod on my previous device was because of software issues. To date, I can see no reason for even a custom ROM on my Note II let alone a beta ROM.

I really didn't mean for this thread to become a support thread. If you guys are having problems flashing or booting, you didn't follow the instructions. Re-read all the information and try again following the instructions exactly.

Been rooting and flashing since the G1 and never had installation abort in the middke of a flash but once. I read the directions and did exactly as posted four times now. Idk what the issue is. I am currently on Jedi X rom. Maybe I should flash stock then retry it?

You don't need cwm I flashed perfectly fine with twrp and have no problems at all haven't tried Bluetooth since I don't use it but it States that it's a bug anyway.
Fandroid93 download goomanager and you can install the latest twrp from there. Or download rommanager and should be able to get cwm from there.

What version phone do you have? Some Canadian versions require the updater script to be modified to remove the version checks, everything flashes fine after that and works as normal but they forgot to add the version numbers in the check.

I've been a long time cm fan until 4.1 TW. That being said I had to try the official nightly and I gotta say it's real cool. 4.2.1 changes with com's twist is very nice. Dare I say it might even be snappier than stock

Hi all,
It's my first post here so please excuse me if I'm posting in the wrong area.
I'm a new android user. Got an G Pad a while ago and since I was not happy with the LG version of the OS I decided to flash a new ROM.
I've flashed the TWRP 2.6.3.2 following the instructions from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2551499
And pushed the CM 11 following the instructions from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565163
Everything seemed to work fine. Made a backpup. I wiped the data (factory reset from TWRP) and tried to install ROM from the zip file.
After a short wait I get a "Failed" message. THis is what it reads:
Code:
Checking for MD5 file...
Skipping MD5 check: no MD5 file found.
assert failed: run_program ("/system/bin/loki.sh") == 0
E:Error executing updater binary in zip '/sdcard/cm-11-20140105-NIGHTLY-v500.zip
Error flashing zip '/sdcard/cm-11-20140105-NIGHTLY-v500.zip'
Updating partition details...
I have been searching and reading all over XDA forum and google for a couple of days but without any success.
I hope you could help me on this one.
Thanks!
Hello guys,
I'm still struggling with this error message with no success. Can seem to find a solution and I have been reading almost every related post on the forum.
Could any of you point me in the right direction?

I would guess that you have flashed the wrong version of twrp.
I am under the impression that you need to flash the original twrp first, Then flash the update twrp zip.
You could do with having flashify on your tablet and use that to flash the original twrp, otherwise you will need to connect the tablet to a pc and use one of the two original methods to get twrp on your tablet.
Hope this helps, good luck

Thank you whoamigriffiths,
I'm using the twrp v2.6.3.2 and getting the same error. I also tried previous versions of the twrp with no success.
The most weird thing is that when I try to install the CWM Advanced Edition from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588671 I get the exact same error.
Any other insight about what I could try?
Thank you.

Well reading the error I've never seen an error mentioning loki.
You too could do with someone with far more experience than me helping you out.
That loki error makes me wonder if you have issues with root, hence why I thought it was an issue with twrp.
If you want a long evening you could just bite the bullet and start over again.
The last post in this thread looks like a good "how to "
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2622034
The idea is to go back to stock LG again, then root it again, then install twrp 2.6.3.1***(didn't realise 2.3.6.0 isn't there anymore) then update to 2.3.2, then flash cm11.
Now I am positive someone with more experience could get you up and running again much easier and far quicker than my suggestion.
But....... On the bright side you will gain valuable experience lol!! Which is what I usually tell myself after I have fooked up
Good luck,
And call me Rich(ard)
All the best
Further edit.
I knew there was a reason why you have to flash 2.6.3.1 first and that was to choose the code that matches your tablet. Read the first post in the twrp thread as well as the lokify bit.
Hope this helps

Thank you Richard.
It makes perfect sense. I'm trying your solution.
I'm trying to get the LG Mobile tool to work but keep getting a "low battery error". Even with the batteries at 100%.
I posted a question on the related thread and hopefully someone will be able to help me.
It's so annoying to have a useless tablet!

Meh still no luck?
I'm out of my depth with regard to the LG mobile tool as I've not used it. Perhaps try and get in touch with Curael as he's very helpful and is definitely more switched on than me.
I'm actually very surprised he hasn't jumped in to help you out already.

Hey Richard,
Yes still stuck. I can't get past this low battery error. I'm assuming the LG Mobile tool won't work for me. But I will contact Curael anyway, hopefully he will know some tricks.
I guess my best solution now will be trying to download a nandroid backup and restore it from TWRP. Of trying downloading and flashing a flash version of the stock ROM.
Do you have any idea where can I find these files?
Really appreciate your help mate.
Cheers

hi you could post your problem in twrp's thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2551499, drgravy is very helpful and he is the one who knows better than anyone about twrp's errors. You could also change the recovery. Install philz advanced cwm and try flashing cm11 with this to check if that works for you. Now if everything else fails and you want to return back to stock the best way is the lg mobile support tool, follow the instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2471370 or here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2590185
Hi hatsika,
I've been trying to go back to stock using the LG Mobile Tool method (I've tried several ays) and always get stuck on a "low battery" error. Even with the tablet fully charged.
I will try the advanced CMW later at home. Hopefully it will work. Will also post on the TWRP thread.
Thanks for the advices.

There's no such thing as a downloadable nandroid. Unless you have uploaded your own to Dropbox for instance.
The only way you can get a flashable stock rom is if a Dev on the forum made one for us.
You see this on the popular device forums after Android updates.
I missed this before but you say you made a twrp back up but you don't mention trying to restore it?

Hi,
yes, I did something stupid and ended up formatting the g pad by accident. Lost the backup files.
I was thinking about asking a friend that has a g pad to make a backup using TWRP and trying to restore on my g pad. But I'm not sure if it would work.
Thanks for the help.

Loosing the will ... Fast. Help Please Kind PPL.
Hi, I think I am having the same problem. I rooted, and then flashed TWRP openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.0-awifi using flashify app then tried the CM-11 and got the failed message.
I have been rooting and flashing ROM's since the HTC Hero, I am loosing the will very fast here with the LG G PAD 8.3. If someone could post instructions, on the easiest NOOB way to install a custom ROM on this device I would be very grateful, the information is just way to fragmented right now, because LG's interface on 4.2.2 is just rubbish, Nexus 5 GEL = Awesome and that's what I want. Not sure what to do at this stage, not even sure how to boot into Recovery with this device, its well difficult. Anyone want to help? Thanks in advance if you can. Sorry if I sound down in the dumps but never really struggled like this before, should have gone with my instinct and got Nexus 7 maybe.

Just a quick update I resolved by flashing 2.6.3.2 using a automated script from one of the other threads, I was then able to install CM-11. Thank goodness. All is OK.
