Wifi issue solved? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
It seems that the wifi issue on our note 2 is really annoying and a lot of solutions and ideas are being said. The question is....!!!
Why do you say that your wifi speed is slow? I bet that you based this on the speedtest application right? I believe most of you this is the basis for the speed of your wifi.
I discovered that on your speedtest application, if you go to the tools and set the animation to "Smooth graphics" you will probably have a slow result on your speed.
But try to set the animation slider to "better performance" and you will have the expected wifi speed that you are expecting in short with a hight/faster result.
So in this case, does the note 2 really have this slow wifi issue? Or this issue was just brought up because most of the users based the issue on the speedtest application?
Anyone tried or experienced this please post a reply.

it happen when you have been using for a period. and yes it slows down the speed, its not necessary an app or anything. i download at about 300kb/s and for example if you are downloading a file which is 30mb only when you have been waiting for 10 minutes an it is only at 5%...you notice that something is wrong.
also it disconnect without any reason and doesn't matter how near of the router you are...
After some months of having it take it as normal. a reset is about... 20 seconds? is not that much.
hope i helped
bests

Welcome to the club , LOL :highfive:

Have you all tried this? I used this with my s3 before and it worked
1. Go to your phone dialer
2. Dial *#0011#
3. When you see the "ServiceMode" screen, press the left menu button
4. Select "WiFi"
5. See that "Wifi Power Save Mode" button that is "ON" - well turn it "OFF"
6. Exit this menu, turn off your Wifi and turn it back on. If you already entered all your wifi credentials, forget your network info (remove it) and re-enter it again.

Of course we all have tested this "solution", to no avail. It's well known by now, that the bug is in the kernel
following the 4.1.2 update. This might be solved with a new kernel only. But by now, I've lost faith in Sammy.

I just don't get it. I am not having any of these issues. I have had issues like connecting and disconnecting but the above worked that out.
But since I have had the note 2 (prev had the s3) I haven't had these problems. So maybe some of us have better units or maybe there problems outside of what Sammy can help with

Preventing data connection

I've just received my Desire, and have asked O2 for a new data plan (I used to be on Blackberry). That won't go through until midnight today, and they will charge me £3 mer MB with NO LIMIT until then! So, I need a way to turn data off (apart from WIFI) as soon as I turn the phone on (it's currently charging). I've read some reports of people turning it off, but certain apps turn it on again.
What's the simplest way to do this please, until tomorrow? Thanks!
Hold down the power button until the menu comes up then turn off mobile network.

Ok great, thanks. Yea now I've turned it on, it's pretty obvious.
Is there any chance of an app turning it on again without my knowledge? In some forums people say it can happen, but I THINK that may have been with WinMo.

I've heard of it in the past but not on 2.1, a rogue application maybe but they shouldn't do. It would be pretty easy to notice if you were out of wifi range though as the data icon would appear in the notification bar, your best bet would be to just check on it if you install any app that mentions data in it's software permissions.

Ok I'll do that. I'll also look for an app that'll show me data usage. I know there are some around.
Thanks for your help.
I'm in the same position as you (but my data plan doesn't go live till the 26th! lol), so I set up the phone to WiFi only thanks to the option on the setting screen, and so far it has only connected when I switched on the data toggle. I'll post here if I come across any apps that will connect though.

I've installed a program called NetCounter. It doesn't seem to count Wifi with the Desire (others have had the same problem), but for you and I that doesn't matter. I've got it set to alert me if 'somehow' the phone starts using data from O2. So it's just an extra safeguard. Sorry you have to put up with that until the 26!
I have the same question and I was told APNDroid does it too. Is it better to use APNDroid or the bult-in option?

Just add the widgets for network data, GPS, Wifi to the home screen (I've stuck mine under the clock) easy to turn on and off with single keys presses then rather than holding the power button down. I've also added the bluetooth shortcut but that takes a massive 2 key presses to turn on or off. I've found it useful for saving battery life as well.

He wanted the quickest way after turning it on, holding the power button is quicker than finding and adding those widgets for the first time.

my phone doesnt let me go to the internet!

help me please, my phone is not connecting to the internet, it wont let me get 3g. i have mobile network checked but it still doesnt go. please help me.
Clearly your series of tubes are clogged.
IN OTHER NEWS:
How about you give us some details? Can another Sprint device in the same area get online? What ROM are you using? What kernel? PRL? Is WiFi/4G working?
Same problem. Well I can get on 3g if I keep clicking and unclicking the mobile network settings. It will just randomly get off 3g and give me no internet. My wireless works great. Even doing a restart of the phone, it will go to 3g for a sec and then drop. Looks like its trying to sync but the sync icon flashes one and off.
I'm using Baked Snacks 1.2.5, Kernel BS #2 (3.7.6b based off 2.6.29), PRL 60669, PRI 1.34_003

funniest one yet... first to have made me laugh out loud
i am using no rom, i never rooted or did nothing to my phone, i was messing with some settings and i went to sleep with wifi on, and i turned it off in the morning and i cant get 3g on my phone, i am running android 2.2-i have launcherpro but i tried on sense but still nothing, i have never installed any rom of some sort, i just updated my phone to android 2.2 on aug 3.
EDIT: i found a solution. i was snooping around google and came across this.
Hard Reset the phone:
1. Turn off the phone
2. Press and hold the volume rocker ( up or down )
3. While holding the volume, press the power button. You will be put into an admin screen.
4. Using the volume rocker select Clear Storage, then the Power button to select that option.
5. Volume UP to confirm your selection
Once the phone reboots, try going through the Hands Free Activation ( mine failed ).
I then updated my Profile and PRL by going to Settings>System Updates. I was able to update my profile and PRL with no problem. I now get my full data services.
i take no credit for this and just to let you know it deletes everything on the phone.(hard reset)
Did you try to Google Nav to the address???
Sorry...that's what initially went through my head when I saw the post =). Did you mess around in the EPST any? It sounds like you have some settings changed around. I'd give sprint a call (don't use chat support...those guys are morons) and they should guide you to the ##3282# and give you the information that goes in there. The only reason I say this is it sounds like something that was going on with my wife's hero a few weeks ago. Hard resets did nothing and it wasn't the ROM I was running. It was that little setting in the ##3282#.

[FIX] Dropping WIFI (disconnect/reconnect issues)? Check this thread.

I know I had a problem with WIFI dropping every few minutes and disconnecting/reconnecting all the time. Causing streaming issues, internet issues and freeze issues if on lockscreen. Well, I have fixed this for myself and wanted to share.
To insure this doesn't happen, just follow these steps:
1. Dial *#0011#
2. Hit the left menu softkey to bring up the menu, and select 'Wifi'
3. Turn OFF the 'Wifi Power Saving'
4. Exit, and Reboot.
Ever since then, I haven't had issues. I am on AT&T GS3. If you are having this issue, please report back here with your model and if this fix worked.
Just trying to help. Good day all!
I'm not entirely certain this was happening, but had noticed some oddities. Not as bad as your experience, however.
But I did make the change to see how it would affect battery life. I am on the Sprint network.

I don't have issues at home but I do with the WiFi at work so I'll try it tomorrow and let you know how it works out. It disconnects and reconnects every 5 seconds and I'm not exaggerating either.
I think the WAP may be a little wonky but my HTC Desire HD had no problem with it.
Mine turned back on after reboot as well.

I am working through logcats as well. I reverted the setting to mimic the problem, and I am going to look at logcats.
If I can see what is exactly triggering it, I will make a flashable fix.
In the meantime, I have another S3 here that I have the power save off on and I still haven't seen a drop yet. So preliminary, I think this is a temporary fix until I can find out root problem.
Hope you find a fix

I have a similar problem. Mine doesn't disconnect per-se, however I did notice while browsing through Flipboard that I wasn't getting any signal sometimes when trying to access a page with a lot of content. Page loading came to a stop. Backed out several times and retried until I finally gave up. This was on my home wifi. I'll try your work-around for a few days. T-Mobile version.
EDIT: This may be just a FlipBoard quirk.
I will try this when I get home. I have a problem on my Sprint SGS3 where it stays connected to wifi but the internet won't actually work (can't browse internet, use play store or youtube, etc). Wifi never sleeps, it's always on. It never disconnects from the network, it just stops receiving and sending data. So we'll see if this does anything for it.
you guys dont have an issue where the display doesnt timeout after turning off the power save?
display won't time out from turning off the wifi power save. Totally unrelated. I am trying to mimic the problem right now.
If anyone is having the issues of the reconnnecting every few seconds and can logcat it for me, PM me please. I can't seem to mimic the problem since the fix.

Turning off power save does indeed fix the WiFi issue at work. As posted before, restarting the phone turns power save back on and the problem is back.

PM sent.
Going through multiple logcats now.
I am seeing even with power saving on though, the problem is still there. It is still disconnecting from WIFI and going back to the data network.
I am sifting through ALOT of code, as some of these log cats are extremely long.
Give me til tonight and I should have a reason at least to why it's doing it by comparing on vs off on powersave.
I have a request, anyone WITHOUT this issue, can you send me a logcat with your WIFI turned on?

Thanks for this. I was about to return the phone because I kept losing ability to connect to any WAPs after sleep mode kicked in. Mine is a Verizon S3.
I've seen this as well. Almost always after deep sleep. Most of the time I have to cycle Wifi to get it connected again every so once in awhile it will connect again on its own. Regardless of the settings that I put in "advanced" under wifi it will do this. Even if I have it set to keep alive never, always or plugged in it doesn't matter.
I still need a logcat from someone NOT having these issues.
Right now from looking through over 10 logcats, I am seeing that it's usually happening on routers that are encrypted with WEP and WPA, unfortunately the 2 most popular forms of wireless security.
That being said, users that are on 'open' networks do not seem to be losing access.
2 things.
1. Can someone PM me a logcat of them successfully connecting to wifi and NOT having drops. I don't care how long the logcat is.
2. When you post about your problems, please tell me what carrier and what type of encryption is being used on the router (if any)
I have been comparing and in each instance, WIFI is going into sleep, turning on data, and then having a problem turning back on.
I think it's an attempt to save power, but only it is not because switching from WIFI to data back to WIFI so much is a real drainer.
Still working on maybe disabling the power save by using a init.d script, to prevent power save mode from coming back on when rebooted, because I know alot of users are saying after disabling it, it is just reapplying on reboot.
BACK TO LOGCATS FOR ME. :/

WiFi Power Save Mode Back On!

After I finally got tired of being nagged about about the LH2 update, I updated. Bye bye root,Titanium and recovery Noticed that my GS3 started dropping WiFi again (3" from router). So I dutifully go into service screen with *#0011# and disabled it. Expected after a firmware update. However, I noticed the same behavior the next day or two. So I disable it again and performed an immediate reboot. Go back only to discover that WPSM has been turned on. WTF!?!?!? :crying:

Every time you restart/reboot it goes back to "on"

man, what rom and kernel are you using, I had a similar problem, so I tried different kernels until one worked, I am no dev but I think that the update/rom/kernels have some things to do with it, guess it's just finding a combination that works.
Good luck.
Search for and install WiFi High Performance Widget from the play store. You will have run some tests to verify its working.
If you go into the *#0011# menu the button will show that it is on. But other apps will show Power Management is off.
Just looked and it may be that Power Save Mode may be different than Power Mgmt. Not sure but it may be something to start from when checking this stuff.
Hope this helps you out a little. Sorry I dont know more right off hand.

Totally stock, and rooted. I am also having problems now with Titanium uploading to Google Drive. Only successful with WPSM off. Still hit or miss though. Unrelated(I think), but I can now receive calls on WiFi calling.
*#0011# not working
For some strange reason, the *#0011# method of pulling up the menu to access the Wi-Fi power saving mode ON/OFF button is no longer working for me. I dial it in the keypad but no menu appears anymore. What's strange is that it used to. Anyone else having this issue?
Also, does keeping the power saving mode ON restrict the range of the Wi-Fi signal as well? Or simply make Wi-Fi turn off when the phone is sleeping?

[How To Fix] Strange things happening to my N7100

Hi Here is bunch of things started happen without reason and cant find fix.
1. Gallery app freez for over a minute and crash if the phone is connected to wifi, but works perfectly if connected to 3g or not connected to any thing.
note: i unchecked photo sync for every account because i noticed that when the gallery freezes the wifi traffic is too high
2. Homescreen picture changes after making or receiving calls from certain contacts .

hi thanks for taking interest in to my thread
try to clear the launcher defaults then restart and then select the adw to be default.
the idea is to restart with the default cash clear. it may help , tell me if it worked.
My wife uses different ring tones for different contacts. The problem is that every now and then it defaults to the main chosen ring tone and have to set them again. I was wondering if any usual updates to apps may be causing it.
Anyone else with this problem?
May be that happens when she plug the phone to the pc to add or remove media . The media scaner that runs after she unplug may cause loss of assigned ringtones. If that is the problem try using airdroid from the market its free very easy to use. If not try to know when exactly that happens .

Thanks for the quick reply. The phone has never been physically connected to the pc. Only connections are via Bluetooth to transfer photos etc. Will check next time if anything changes after Bluetooth connection though.

I can't remember, to be honest.
My note is set to disable the lockscreen when wifi connects to certain WIFI routers. (work/home).
I suspect that might be the problem, but I can't for the life of me remember what program is turning on/off the lockscreen.
Never seen any issues when getting/making calls.
