I know I had a problem with WIFI dropping every few minutes and disconnecting/reconnecting all the time. Causing streaming issues, internet issues and freeze issues if on lockscreen. Well, I have fixed this for myself and wanted to share.
To insure this doesn't happen, just follow these steps:
1. Dial *#0011#
2. Hit the left menu softkey to bring up the menu, and select 'Wifi'
3. Turn OFF the 'Wifi Power Saving'
4. Exit, and Reboot.
Ever since then, I haven't had issues. I am on AT&T GS3. If you are having this issue, please report back here with your model and if this fix worked.
Just trying to help. Good day all!
I'm not entirely certain this was happening, but had noticed some oddities. Not as bad as your experience, however.
But I did make the change to see how it would affect battery life. I am on the Sprint network.

I don't have issues at home but I do with the WiFi at work so I'll try it tomorrow and let you know how it works out. It disconnects and reconnects every 5 seconds and I'm not exaggerating either.
I think the WAP may be a little wonky but my HTC Desire HD had no problem with it.
Mine turned back on after reboot as well.

I am working through logcats as well. I reverted the setting to mimic the problem, and I am going to look at logcats.
If I can see what is exactly triggering it, I will make a flashable fix.
In the meantime, I have another S3 here that I have the power save off on and I still haven't seen a drop yet. So preliminary, I think this is a temporary fix until I can find out root problem.
Hope you find a fix

I have a similar problem. Mine doesn't disconnect per-se, however I did notice while browsing through Flipboard that I wasn't getting any signal sometimes when trying to access a page with a lot of content. Page loading came to a stop. Backed out several times and retried until I finally gave up. This was on my home wifi. I'll try your work-around for a few days. T-Mobile version.
EDIT: This may be just a FlipBoard quirk.
I will try this when I get home. I have a problem on my Sprint SGS3 where it stays connected to wifi but the internet won't actually work (can't browse internet, use play store or youtube, etc). Wifi never sleeps, it's always on. It never disconnects from the network, it just stops receiving and sending data. So we'll see if this does anything for it.
you guys dont have an issue where the display doesnt timeout after turning off the power save?
display won't time out from turning off the wifi power save. Totally unrelated. I am trying to mimic the problem right now.
If anyone is having the issues of the reconnnecting every few seconds and can logcat it for me, PM me please. I can't seem to mimic the problem since the fix.

Turning off power save does indeed fix the WiFi issue at work. As posted before, restarting the phone turns power save back on and the problem is back.

PM sent.
Going through multiple logcats now.
I am seeing even with power saving on though, the problem is still there. It is still disconnecting from WIFI and going back to the data network.
I am sifting through ALOT of code, as some of these log cats are extremely long.
Give me til tonight and I should have a reason at least to why it's doing it by comparing on vs off on powersave.
I have a request, anyone WITHOUT this issue, can you send me a logcat with your WIFI turned on?

Thanks for this. I was about to return the phone because I kept losing ability to connect to any WAPs after sleep mode kicked in. Mine is a Verizon S3.
I've seen this as well. Almost always after deep sleep. Most of the time I have to cycle Wifi to get it connected again every so once in awhile it will connect again on its own. Regardless of the settings that I put in "advanced" under wifi it will do this. Even if I have it set to keep alive never, always or plugged in it doesn't matter.
I still need a logcat from someone NOT having these issues.
Right now from looking through over 10 logcats, I am seeing that it's usually happening on routers that are encrypted with WEP and WPA, unfortunately the 2 most popular forms of wireless security.
That being said, users that are on 'open' networks do not seem to be losing access.
2 things.
1. Can someone PM me a logcat of them successfully connecting to wifi and NOT having drops. I don't care how long the logcat is.
2. When you post about your problems, please tell me what carrier and what type of encryption is being used on the router (if any)
I have been comparing and in each instance, WIFI is going into sleep, turning on data, and then having a problem turning back on.
I think it's an attempt to save power, but only it is not because switching from WIFI to data back to WIFI so much is a real drainer.
Still working on maybe disabling the power save by using a init.d script, to prevent power save mode from coming back on when rebooted, because I know alot of users are saying after disabling it, it is just reapplying on reboot.
BACK TO LOGCATS FOR ME. :/

Hi,
Does anyone have this problem on their phone? Every now and then, when I am doing a data related function, data hangs as though it is not connected even though I am in a perfect 4g coverage area and the 4g sysmbol is still on. I know its hanging because the arrow to the right of the 4g symbol stays lit green. It either starts working 5 minutes later on its own or I turn wifi on and off. I have the newest sim card installed.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
probably a software related issue
the only time i experience that is when i lose connectivity with the network, as in the signal bars or 3G/4G arrows are all greyed
Yea dude i noticed even tho i have wifi set to never it always shuts off or i should say loses connection i hate it because i have to pull down status bar hit it off then on wifi is definitely effed on stock too. Anyone else experiencing this? I know its a problem cuz my g2x i could leave it alobe for an hour in hibernate come back and wifi still good to go anyone have any ideas? Or is it a s2 problem witg wifi cutting off. Like i said the icon will still be there but i wont have connection and 50% of the time i have wifi icon and 4g
Same issue here, in two different phones I've had. Not sure what the issue is. In fact, opening this page, my data was hanging for a minute, irony.

But this happens to me when my wifi is off. Only on the cellar data connection.
I had this issue after giving juice defender superuser permissions. It seemed that it would not turn data back on when I had the screen on. I'm not sure if this applies to you, but I no longer gave juice defender su and everything was fine. a lot of those functions in that app do not seem to play nicely with this phone yet anyway.

+1 to everything already mentioned.
I was in Vegas this weekend and had HORRIBLY slow/no data at all. Like has been mentioned, the green arrow with just stay lit. thought i was the rom, i nandroided back to stock, same issue. Hope this is fixed soon it is hella annoying.
This fixed it for me
I have had this same issue for a while, here's how to fix it. Go to Titanium backup, I found out that there're two versions of "My account" on the list, so I frozed the old one, then go to task manager "kill all", the 4G icon will disappear. Open up "My account" again, the 4G reappears but as soon as I close the app, the 4G icon would disappear.
Hope it helps someone
I too have similar problems where my data hangs or doesnt want to connect. Then a few minutes later, it will decide to start working. This happens even in full signal regions. Stock rom and/or BeastMod rom...
Not sure why it happens :S
For those having problems and have tmobile my account on phone freeze it or uninstall it i guarantee it fixes your data problems trust me. I to had problems just like you guys and i was told to uninstall my account i was like what? What the hell is that going to do but believe me when i say it worked! I actually unfroze it to see if the problem would come back (4g and wifi on at same time) or cutting out. And it did. So i refroze my account and bam 4g disapeared while wifi on. This has fixed all my wifi and data problem phone works flawless now! Basically i think t-mobile trying to snoop with our data. Scumbags
This is happening to me. The phone is driving me mad. It happens constantly. The "up arrow" in the 4g icon will light up, and all data will freeze. I stare at loading screens all day long. It freezes anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Then it will fix itself, then it will happen again within 2-5 minutes. I'm furious with this phone.
Wifi works great. It's not dependent on my location, it happens no matter where I am. Doesn't matter what I do, nothing prevents it from happening. Of course, the Airplane mode toggle or resetting APNs and all that will do the trick to fix it temporarily, but it will only happen again 5 minutes later.
I'm on stock, unrooted. I am ready to throw this phone at the wall. Has anybody else managed to actually fix it or get a response from Samsung/T-Mobile?
I should have read this thread before buying this phone. This is so annoying. I tried to put the phone in flight mode. It fixed for a min and back to problem.
I'm having the same problem. I didn't have this problem until I updated to 2.3.6. Anyone else still on an earlier version?

Same things been happening to me lately, its awfully annoying. Makes me want to throw my phone across the room sometimes.
I have a gsm Nexus and I'm running the Aug21 nightly, but I've had this issue for awhile, at least 2 or 3 nightlies. I'm not sure how long because I was on vacation in a WiFi free zone all of last week.
My WiFi can't find any networks but can't turn off. It perpetually says 'searching for networks' but never finds any. If I try to switch it off, the switch hangs on Off with a darker shade of grey for a few seconds then flips back to On.
If I reboot the phone, everything is fine for a few hours. WiFi can turn on and off and doesn't seem to have any connection issues.
My battery life doesn't seem to be suffering all that much, so it seems that WiFi is sleeping normally.
I haven't any logs because it's hard to pinpoint the exact moment when things go wrong.
I haven't tried wiping yet, but I'll give it a try if no one has any other advice.
Is anyone else having this?

Did you figure out how to fix the problem? I'm experiencing the exact same problem.
I wound up doing a factory reset and installing CM again. If that doesn't work, format /system and wipe data before flashing. It comes back every once in awhile. I have no idea what caused it, but a reset'll fix damn near anything. I had an issue where my phone thought it was charging even when it wasn't plugged in and had to return it to get a new logic board, I might've just had a lemon. Have you had any other hardware issues?
I had this issue for a while too. After I did a full wipe and went to the latest nightly it stopped happening. Also I turned on the 'always keep wifi on during sleep' option in settings.
I get it too. It's random, and it is not fixed by changing the kernel. Very frustrating.

So I dutifully go into service screen with *#0011# and disabled it. Expected after a firmware update. However, I noticed the same behavior the next day or two. So I disable it again and performed an immediate reboot. Go back only to discover that WPSM has been turned on. WTF!?!?!? :crying:

man, what rom and kernel are you using, I had a similar problem, so I tried different kernels until one worked, I am no dev but I think that the update/rom/kernels have some things to do with it, guess it's just finding a combination that works.
Good luck.
Search for and install WiFi High Performance Widget from the play store. You will have run some tests to verify its working.
If you go into the *#0011# menu the button will show that it is on. But other apps will show Power Management is off.
Just looked and it may be that Power Save Mode may be different than Power Mgmt. Not sure but it may be something to start from when checking this stuff.
Hope this helps you out a little. Sorry I dont know more right off hand.

Totally stock, and rooted. I am also having problems now with Titanium uploading to Google Drive. Only successful with WPSM off. Still hit or miss though. Unrelated(I think), but I can now receive calls on WiFi calling.
*#0011# not working
For some strange reason, the *#0011# method of pulling up the menu to access the Wi-Fi power saving mode ON/OFF button is no longer working for me. I dial it in the keypad but no menu appears anymore. What's strange is that it used to. Anyone else having this issue?
Also, does keeping the power saving mode ON restrict the range of the Wi-Fi signal as well? Or simply make Wi-Fi turn off when the phone is sleeping?
So I turn my mobile network off to conserve battery. But if somebody sends me any mms (picture or multi-person) and I turn on my network after the fact, it just perpetually says downloading.

It probably doesn't really start properly since data was off. Maybe try to rebooting your phone to see if it will do it then.
Are you manually turning it off and on? You could try an app that automates it so that when you get a message and the screen lights up (assuming you have that setting enabled) it turns on and see if that helps. Though I have found that using such apps will sometimes cause your data to not reenable and require either toggling manually, toggling airplane mode, or rebooting.

Yes I am using the toggle in the shade. I will give the app a shot but my guess would be failure since the network seems to need to be on when the message comes in rather than an automated toggle after the fact

If you enable screen on for notifications it may have data back on before the download actually starts. It may not work. But I have used screen off profiles before and not had issues with MMS other than the occasional failure to reenable. Do you turn WiFi and GPS off? It may be enough to allow for leaving data on.

That's because NJ sucks balls.... Try going to settings, applications and force stop the messaging app. Then open messages and try downloading again. If for some reason that doesn't work, a reboot should.
Try this:
Be sure that you have good connection and you might want to force quit messages if this continues.
I've just gone through my first day of use with the LGOG, and a few issues have come to my attention.
The first is that while I was at work, i felt the device getting hot in my pocket. When I checked to see what was going on, it was searching for GPS. I had tried to use Maps, and it couldn't find me so later on I turned on location services/satellite GPS so it could actually find me. I haven't noticed it since. Could that have been the solution?
Issue 2 was that it seemed that my WiFi was turning on by itself, and it was draining my battery searching for a signal. I had turned it off when I left my house, but it seemed like it came back on and started searching in vain for a signal. I turned it off again, and haven't had that issue since. Has anyone else had this happen, or did I accidentally activate WiFi without knowing it and that's all there is to it?
One other issue I was having was with the text cursor freaking out and going to the front of my texts. I can't really remember for sure if it has happened since I updated to ZV9, so does anyone know if ZV9 had a fix for that or if I've just been lucky the past few hours?
Thats all I can think of for now, thanks for any help you guys can give me!

For your wifi randomly turning on make sure you have connection optimization off (system settings, mobile networks). ZV9 shouldve fixed the crazy text issue. Not sure about your device heating up with gps, maybe you had Google maps running in the background trying to pick up your location. Hope I helped!

The connection optimizer basically turns on wifi to search for a signal and then shuts off if it can't pick up anything. Of course this only happens when you have it checked and using data. I'm not certain what the qualcomm enhancement location service does besides help you getting a gps lock.. I know I've always had it enabled and gotten an instant lock almost all the time with great battery life. On a side note, you'll love the speed and build of this phone, plus our devs are working hard to bring us jellybean sooner than sprint/lg

In regards to notifications, is there any way to limit update intervals for facebook? I feel like its going to eat my battery up if its always telling me about facebook stuff the moment its posted lol.

Under facebook settings just change interval to update less regularly. I use flash blink. It actually flashes the LED light to let me know. Unless of course you want to be private about it.
To add a little about the Connections Optimizer: It's Sprint thing that they're adding to all of their phones. It basically turns on wifi briefly, even when wifi is off, to try to connect to open wifi networks. I'm pretty sure it's an effort by Sprint to keep people off their 3g/4g network and on wifi whenever possible to reduce bandwidth usage. It is also incredibly annoying, because it notifies me of the free wifi in my city (that's strong enough to locate, but not strong enough to transfer data and stay connected) every time I am in certain areas. The pop-up about new open networks also gets in the way of receiving phone calls sometimes. Turn it off. Android already connects to your remembered wifi networks automatically, and I think you can handle the wifi on/off toggling.

I couldn't stand connection optimizer. Walking through NYC to go to work, I'd look down and see my phone actually connecting to and using ANY open wifi signal on my walk down the blocks. I would think that's a huge security issue for phones to randomly connect to any network it sees. Just think of how well easily it could be to rig a router to sniff all those data packets!
