Tested in sense, using tegrastats.
I noticed that when i run the camera app, any camera app, the cpu speed gets locked to 860mhz
All 4 cores are being used at some % but the speed gets locked to HALF of max. I just don't understand why they would do this.
And yes, the Cpu never goes above it even while recording. As soon as u exit the camera app, the cpu can go to its 1.5Ghz under load.
Could this be the reason the camera is always so choppy and such?

I'm not and there's no clock-locking in the stock camera app, ProCapture or Camera FV-5...

i was on Blade elite 1.3.1
Ill try a diff rom and find out.
Reckon it's a kernel thing. I'm using Alex-V's 1.7 sense kernel and the cpu happily clocks up to the max frequency set.
Camera turns the screen on 100% brightness it likely is coded to do that to limit heat while you are holding it.
Most of the image processing is done on the sense imaging chip and not the CPU.

seems legit.
I can confirm that Pro Capture doesn't get limited. I guess that backs up treebill's theory, since it seems to only happen in the native camera app.

Are you using a fully stock camera app or is it modded?

yea i saw ur sig, so i even flashed android rev.
On blade rom, the camera was stock,
Both stock apps on both roms were getting the Cpu-limitation for me.
The other camera app (pro capture) was not limited. But funnily, there was no difference in terms of lag, Both the stock and second apps lagged equally, i mean its not a huge amount of lag, but quite noticeable.
Im really curious how you are on stock camera app and not getting cpu locked. Are you using tegrastats to check? or some other program? I mean it only happens while the camera is running, so :/

Well i'm not using a fully stock camera. I use Lypota's modpack which includes camera mods, as well as ivicask's camera drivers mod.
And yeah I installed Tegrastats to reproduce it but I don't use it any other time.
Incidentally, I also use Smartmax governor and ROW IO scheduling...possibly a factor.

i've already explored the governor/scheduler combos. Even on performance -- 1.5ghz locked, the camera app overrides it to 860 on stock apps.
I don't think i care enough to find a "fix", i've switched to rootbox and just waiting for sense 5 to appear for our HOX. Maybe that camera will perform better. *fingers crossed*

As I said the processing of images are not done on the CPU, no need for it to run at 1.5 just to take a picture.
Even if you got the app to run the CPU at 1.7 it wouldn't effect the quality of the image.

can you give the market link or the app's full name
U`ll never see the companion core.
It`s invisible to Android OS
management is on Nvidia level
the companion core only works wen the screen is off, It's used for background tasks which doesn't need the quad-core.
It's controlled by hardware so even Android can't see it
so what they using in the video? As that can see it?

Android OS never sees it, but I've been digging through nvidia's tegra kernel repo[1] and the kernel definitely knows about the extra core. But it doesn't get reported over any of the regular performance monitoring interfaces.
However arch/arm/mach-tegra/sysfs-cluster.c[1] defines a sysfs interface than can report if the low power core/cluster or the high performance cluster is in use, tweak a few parameters and even force it to switch between clusters.
Reading /sys/kernel/cluster/active will report the currently active cluster (LP or G). writing 'lp' or 'g' will force it into one of those modes.
You can also find various stats in /sys/kernel/debug/cpuidle/lp2 and /sys/kernel/debug/tegra_hotplug/stats.
I've only skimmed some of the code, and so far I'm not sure if the completely automatic switching from the low power core to the fist core that nvidia brag about actually exists. Some comments in arch/arm/mach-tegra/pm-t3.c suggest that the at least the first generation of Tegra 3 chips have bugs and don't quite switch the entire cpu state and implement some workarounds.[3]
Anyway back to the main topic, I'm guessing that someone could hack together a cpu monitor that polled /sys/kernel/cluster/active and assigned the activity of the first core to either the companion core or the first core depending on which cluster is active.
As a new user, I can't post links, but here are some urls you can copy/paste

Based off above posts saying that android itself is not aware of the extra CPU...
I have not rooted my HOX yet however i have installed SetCPU to monitor clock speed of the CPU.
To my supprise, it seems that the lowest clock you can set is 51Mhz...
Im not sure if this is a bug with setcpu/stock rom but to me if it is at 51mhz then that would be the +1 core.
The lowest i can monitor my phone go to when i am watching SetCPU is about 100mhz
U`r getting close......
The 4 cores have a min clock of 100
The 51Mhz is indeed the companion core cause the 4 cores never NEVER drop below 100Mhz

I was able to download it from market but uninstalled within my 15min window since it's not optimized for the one x screen + quicksystem Info & CPU spy app can do the same with more functionality

I finally managed to install it on my oneX but I'm disapointed to see that the companion core seems to be never used.
I was expecting to see the four cores down to 0% in numerous low usage case but it NEVER get down to 0% even when sitting on the desk and doing nothing
in the vid which have been posted in the first post, you can clearly see that the companion is activated at least 90% of the time.
I don't know what to think about that, is the companion core included in the four cores stat through Tablet CPU Usage Monitor, or is the companion being never used ???
Also, I have read around here that the GPU actualy doesn't render 2D things (even the desktop), so it might explain why the companion is never activated...

Your comparing a DHD to a One X.... It's a quad core device *facepalm*...
So before you give up and call the One X a terrible phone (like the 500 rants this forum has) . We need much more information about your device.
1. Have you unlocked the bootloader?
2. Are you running a custom rom/kernel?
3. What base are you on?
4. How long have you had this phone? And how long have you had this problem?

If the screen becomes yellow due to the heat, I would say this is hw problem as he tested different roms. UV might help, but the device should not become like this.
What I would be interested in, if he is not using it in direct sunlight on a beach with 40 degrees in the shadow. Even though I saw ppl say their devices survived that.
I am now in Egypt myself and even at night. With -125 UV. And the device still gets hot, red/green blinking on charge.
BUT I never got yellow spots coming out of the screen. And just cuz of that I would says something is wrong on hw level there.

try faux kernel and undervolt it and underclock it using system tuner or setcpu that will solve all your heat issues
I have exactly the same problem. Whenever i use my One X for navigation in the car (using Navigon) the battery drains more than the Kidigi Car Holder can charge. I already checked all advices that there are like:
- Kidigi Car Holder is charging with AC
- disabled 2 Cores
- UV all frequencies by -125mV
- running the phone in airplane mode
- disabling autobrightness
At the moment i´m running ARHD 9.3.2 with Faux 007m Kernel.

If it's happening on 2 roms other ones won't help you.
For sure not customized sense ones.
You could compare sense vs cyanogenmod.
But still, the CPU is kernel controlled.
And remember always when you download a Rom it takes like a day to settle, syncing set ups and etc. So to test a Rom you need few days.
Just stick to a Rom for now. And try the advices we already gave you. Undervolting with lets say faux kernel etc.

Install Hidden settings app from play store and in the newly created Power saver settings in the app drawer, disable "Reduce CPU cores" or something like this,(its the second option on the list, thats for sure )because basically your HOX runs on 1 core with 1 Ghz, but if you turn this power saver setting off, you will have a full 4 core perfomance, as it should be. This has solved me the heating problem a long time ago when i SEARCHED THIS FORUM, which option i gladly reccomend now to you!!!

So what does this mod give to us?
What does this help us with?
•Speed √

Works with any ROM
So, if you have Faux 11 kernel + this mod.

In technical terms, we are disabling CPU Rendering from the system so it force GPU to work on all Graphics.
So why not?
Would it hurt no?

Thank you. Every one thinks it will break things. It is like saying I have a Land Rover with 4v4. Now, you're going up a hill and to run it up, you buy newer and better wheels. It still gets up, but slower. It would be a lot smarter to enable 4v4 so it can climb faster and more efficient. So GPU is supposed to run the Graphics Interface. Not the Processing Unit. Does it make sense? Of course not. Using GPU for its dedicated reason it is a way more reasonable thought. So why would you want it disabled?

I'm not sure why everyone is jumping on the OP so hard.. he stated clearly in the second or third post that it Works without breaking anything .. I flashed it on my AOKP JB build with no problems and it didn't break anything like the option in development settings does... for example .. xda app loads pictures perfectly.
Maybe test it next time before flaming give it a test...

Because you're probably not using any old apps that haven't been updated for ICS. Not jumping on the OP I'm simply stating this mod isn't needed because the GPU is already rendering everything. CPU will only render old apps so if you don't have any old apps then this mod is essentially useless. You're not forcing the GPU to do something it isn't already doing.

OK.. then riddle me this.. Using the option in development settings breaks my XDA and my FRF app, meaning they wont load pictures in the app.. However this mod has not caused this side effect..
RushAOZ said:
This mod isn't needed. The whole reason GPU rendering exists in ICS/JB is for apps that were written on GB. GB written apps didn't support GPU acceleration by default. With ICS and JB apps are written with GPU rendering on by default.
Basically these settings ONLY effect old apps that haven't been updated to ICS/GB. This is why disabling CPU rendering will break some apps as experienced by some of you above. GPU rendering is supposed.to force the GPU to render old apps and while it works most of the time there are apps that you can't force and you get errors and artifacts. So many misconceptions with this setting lol. Just leave it on. Problem solved.

According to pocket now force gpu rendering is basically used to off load the graphical tasks given to the CPU in apps that aren't optimized for ICS. ICS has this option enabled by default when writing apps for it but with apps written on GB down to cupcake 1.6, gpu rendering when writing apps is off by default.
Basically, leave it on as its probably helping your CPU run older unoptimized apps more efficiently since it doesn't have to process the graphical UI for that app too.

Its also pretty hilarious that you say this and are bending it to make your self correct..
YES newer applications that are based on the newer SDK have the ability to do this Nativity regardless of what you have checked or unchecked..
BUT it is not ONLY going to be beneficial for apps that are not.. it will force ALL rendering through your GPU and leaving the computation to the CPU giving your system an edge.. while be it a small one, but never the less an edge as far as CPU processing times and Graphics quality output ..

Ok enough arguing here, stay on topic and stop assuming that this or that will happen until you have tried the MOD. If you don't like or want to try it, stay out of the thread. Don't troll dev threads.

XDA Forum MOD
alphadog32, thanks (I did hit the Thanks button), but one needs
more info in the OP, like, how to install it, does it work with default
kernel, or only with Faux, what Rom is compatible with....and so on.
Thanks for this.
:good:
I apologize I misread/ misunderstood what the OP was saying. Since the mod is actually configuring the egl libs, this WILL NOT break your pics as force gpu in setting will. Everybody thank the OP and move this thread forward

Flashed it a few hours ago, seems pretty solid so far. At least it certainly hasn't given me any problems with games or other apps. It's almost weird seeing pictures load on the XDA app btw, because it's been a long time since I've seen them work... lol. Running it on CM9.1.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877183
so yeah, is it just a load of crap or does it actually work?
If you are on ICS you can make a nandroid backup and try it
I saw this today as well not sure whether to try it. Isn't it the same or similar to what we can choose in developers options to force GPU rendering? Maybe will try later when I have time as I cant complain with the speed that I'm getting from nikez jb p0.9

I am specifically wondering how will it work with gingerbread roms. I mean, it must be some kind of BS right? There's no way to force GPU rendering for UI in gingerbread, is there?
Joke of the day... classic!
Works on Mildwild 4.3. I don't have a launcher redraw anymore And it's not GPU rendering, it just removes the pathway to render on the CPU so the GPU does the graphics stuff

Basically everyone should be getting a placebo affect, i personally havent seen anyone provide evidence such as benchmarking surfaceflinger to prove the ui is smoother. The manufacturers by default select the gpu to render the ui which has a 0 1 on adreno200 and 0 0 on android thus its hw accelerated and not software accelerated
So what does that really do anyway ? Anyone notices really anything?
I don't trust benchmarks, they show incredibly inaccurate results (at least Antutu and Quadrant). Try run it twice on the same rom, one right next to another.
Well, no use from benchmark apps, but I tried it on MIUI rom with high resolution graphics settings for launcher. I definitely had lags issue with it without patch, especially with cube 3d screen transition effect. Now with it no lags at all, and I'm sure it's not a placebo.

Lol im not talking about regular benchmarking
I tried it with rom in signature and confirm that UI is smoother and also app like Facebook seems faster, like author is reporting in original thread.

Well I did actually just test it and it's obviously a load of crap and a waste of time. Can't believe I ACTUALLY was stupid enough to think that it'd work.

I don't think it's useless or stupid.... either 99% are having a placebo reaction with noticeable effects.. or they are having a reaction to a noticeable difference on their equipments.. I was also skeptic that would do anything.. I can't tell you what it is, but I do notice some differences.
I would say it works - somehow.
I use it on SpazeDogs ICS ROM and it gives a subjective performance boost - by feeling i wouldnt say that the FPS increased or something like that. But it feels smoother. Would call it "Project Butter light"

Just curious if anyone else is getting extremely slow performance? I'm running CM10.1 and it is slow -- one of the last stable builds.
I've found that I can't have Hangouts + Facebook or Hangouts + Chrome open at the same time. It'll take ages to load something, so I end up having to force close everything pretty often. And my phone's battery is getting worse and worse in terms of performance
Have been debating what the cause could be. I have a TON of music on my external_sd -- wondering if maybe Android is constantly scanning it and it's slow/losing battery from that. The media scanning icon is not up, though. Could be the ROM? Have been debating dropping back to using a deodexed/debloated stock ROM. Wondering if maybe the battery is just naturally degrading -- I've had the phone for ALMOST one year. Wondering if it's the issue with just having 1GB of RAM on the device?
Any thoughts from anyone on improving performance? I would love to be able to go to work without having to charge the phone. I can go for about 8 hours at work (sometimes listening to music, sometimes not) and by the time I'm home, my phone is anywhere from 10-20%.

as I know media scan only runs after boot.
Most of android devices has less then 1 giga ram, I don think you need more. You can enable comcache. settings -> performance -> memory management -> zram , it needs kernel support.
zram compresses memory.
My 4.3 roms dont have zram support.
Factory reset always win. You should try latest cm10.2, I think 4.3 faster.

Zram and other improvements
Hello, good afternoon to all
First, sorry to revive an old post, but i can't post in dev zone.
I am currently improving the performance of my i927.
I installed the kernel "LiteKernel" (V4.0-20130113 ICS) but I have some doubts. For example, how I can enable zram? How I can make a small OC the GPU?
I would appreciate some more advice.
Stock ICS 4.0.4 ROM UCLJ3 with LiteKernel ICS V4.0-20130113
Thanks a lot!

Thanks a lot!
zRam activated and working, and see that GPU is on 400mHz always
But i was thinking in app like Android Tuner that can set a boot profile... because i have to enable zRam every boot
Any idea? any other improvement?
THANKS!
EDIT: Now i see the option that i can set a profile when boot with trickster mod!! thanks again!
