[Q] Mainboard replaced - keeps forgetting settings - Sony Xperia S, Acro S, Ion

My Xperia S has been extra slow and buggy for a month now. It would get very warm, CPU above 50% for half an hour without the phone being used, shutting down apps I was using, camera would only take one photo before error reports forgetting settings on restart, etc. Personally, I suspected problems with the internal storage. Factory resets don't help.
The repair store recently replaced the mainboard. However, the phone keeps forgetting settings every time I restart: Widgets disappear, some icons disappear, keyboard is reset to default. This applies to exactly the same widgets/icons as before the mainboard supposedly was replaced. I haven't tested it long enough to know if the other issues are still present.
Why does the phone keep forgetting my settings? Are those details related to another part of the device, not the motherboard? I.e. is the internal storage integrated in the motherboard? Any suggestions?

Hi,
Please use Sony Update Service/PC Companion and do a software re-install. If your bootloader is unlocked (you will get a message that " Software has been modified" when you try to use SUS/Companion) then use Flashtool by Androxyde and flash the latest JB's FTF file. You can find the ftf file over here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2342864
This should take care of all software issues.
Good luck

I have not flashed or rooted my phone in any way. I have done factory reset/software reinstall 5 times over the last month. Is it necessary to flash the phone to solve this issue?

If you have already tried doing a software repair, then I guess that the only option left would be to take it to Sony.

I get this message when I reset my PDA after some heavy surfing the internet or mail trafic (GPRS). I'm still not sure what the real cause is.
I tried a different battery, SD card, CE version (official HTC upgrade) memory location for my IE cache and sync software to resolve it. The hard resets (that I cannot get around) occur around every other day so you can imagine that this is frustrating! i have been using Active Sync and Mobile Device center (vista) mixed but the problems continued after I stopped syncing my PDA. Now even after a do a hard reset I cannot use the mobile synchronization. Thanks for your help!
No help, but I've had that one too... I suspect there is a faulty batch of Artemis motherboards out there.
Having the same problem last few weeks... Once in a few day's the same error after resetting (because of memory shortage message). Never happened until a few weeks ago. Apart from this I also had some strange, unremovable folders (named a/b/c and so on) a week ago but they disappeared after one of those hard resets. Looks like hardware issues. Thinking about returning the device or even buy a new one...

Isolate the problem
Hi,
I have the same problem. I found so far that if I don't install ANY application to the phone, it works fine (I mean, after a hard reset) Is it feasible to sync. BUT, if I install anything, I mean anything, the problem happens.
Anyone can confirm it with his phone?
Thanks
thnx

Same problem since a few weeks ago after using wm6.5 .
It started a month ago after wm6.5 installation. At the beginning i identified a really high power compsumption with wm6.5, but some other people had the same problem.
After that this problem appeared and i had tried a lot of things. I installed 3 different wm6.5 ROMs and i decided to return back to wm6.1, but the problem persists sometimes.
I can use it with few programs with no much resources comsumption, but with heavy software and a reset, it occurs.
I thought that it is a battery problem, but arghsplutt sais that he as tried different batteries so i've no idea what can produce it.
It is nothing to do with flashing 6.5 ROMs
I had a stock ROM on a Wing and flashed a newer stock ROM and then got the message.
and the whole screen is shifted a bit over to the right (AND NOW GOES INTO CONTINUOUS RESTART)
I suspect that large connector which holds the main board to the video cards?

Rebooting every few minutes - my tablet now resembles a potato

Hi all,
I have a vanilla, unrooted tablet which had Marshmallow installed a few weeks ago. It reboots constantly (like I am lucky to get 2-3 minutes out of it). Sometimes it reboots 7 or 8 times in a row until I give up and hold the power button down.
Have cleared cache and factory reset (multiple times). This hasnt solved the problem. I thought this might be an issue with the Google Play Store, as it generally crashes as soon as I run this (as the first thing I do after the reset) - so after one of the resets I downloaded the latest playstore APK and installed it. Also did not login to the play store in case this was corrupted or something. Have tried this without loading ANY apps other than the stock that comes after the reset - but still the issue persists.
All of the above has been done with the SD card removed - and with full charge
Generally it crashes as soon as I try and run any app or go to settings etc. This is even with the completely factory reset and wiped tablet with no additional apps installed.
Having tried everything, am down to the theory of hardware fault - specifically the battery. After the last update (which failed half way through) I had big problems with battery life and the tablet got (and still gets) quite hot. I am thinking something in the new update might have put extra stress on the battery, which after a few weeks has caused it to fail.
Is this possible, and is there anyway in logs etc to tell if this is hardware or software?
Anyway, other than throwing this away and buying a new one - am not sure what the next step to solve this is. (Maybe revert to previous Android?). Any suggestions or help is welcome, but I am thinking of throwing this away and not throwing good money after bad...
(Have emailed Samsung but of course never heard back - so suffice to say my next tab wont be Samsung)
try download your stock firmware and flash it with odin via your pc.
i had problem with my tab...i had restarts always...whatever i do, every few seconds it restarts by itself... but it works normaly on cable so i went to search for a solution and lol i laughed when i saw what was the solution...i removed the backcover fo the device and then just reatached the battery connector cable and thats it and now my tab works normaly even on battery.not sure if u have similar issue but u can try it it will take u 5 min work and also u have video on Youtube how to dissambly galaxy tab S...cheers mate and wish u good luck
I solved this prob yesterday, itb works fine nw, didnt crash since, just open the tablet remove the basttery vlean its pins then reinstall it
U can find vedios explaining hw to remomve z battery
OK - have updated firmware with ODIN (and tried 3 different versions going back to Android 5)
Have undone the back and removed battery and reset cables. Even replaced the battery with one I bought off Ebay
Cant think of anything else, must be a fault on a board somewhere...
I think she is dead. :crying:
Thanks to those who posted and sent me PM's - really do appreciate it.
By the way, it is definitely something to do with the power. When it reboots and it is attached to a USB, the screen flashes up with the empty battery (ie charging from completely empty) symbol momentarily (maybe a second or 2 tops) before flashing up with 64% or whatever the actual battery level is...

If your battery can go from 0% to 64% in a few seconds, the battery connector needs to be resoldered due to cracked solder joints.
This rework only takes 5 minutes , ask a repair shop or anyone knows how to solder for assistant.

Xperia M "Unfortunately, xxxx has stopped" for ALL apps CONSTANTLY

Hi all, read many threads here and finally posting.
I have an xperia M (C1905 I think)
Short story:
As soon as I turn on this device within a few seconds I get the "Unfortunately, xxxx has stopped". I hit okay and within a second something else is stopped. This is repeated constantly for as long as I could tolerate waiting for. The odd occasion I have managed to get maybe 5 seconds between app crashing to navigate into the settings to try something out or check the album.
I am asking for help on what to do in order to access the files on the device. I really really want to save the images. I since has moved on to a Z and now a Z3 but at this moment I want to get the images. (Factory reset is thus out of the question). I rather leave the phone intact for years to pass until some technology makes it possible to retrieve the files.
Longer story:
I think this issue started occurring after an android update - which leads me to my conspiracy at the end of the post. Basically after an update I started noticing random apps being stopped/crashing without warning. Apps that weren't even being used. This happened maybe once a week, then a couple times a week. Seemed pretty random at first. Thus why I never took a moment to see the exponential trend and act fast to back up data. Over the course of a month probably, this just got worse to the point where an app of some sort is constantly crashing. It could be facebook, then gmail, then google, then a service, then homescreen blah blah anything and everything is crashing just so it can fill the screen. Multiple at a time. I hit ok and another appears or 5 more appear. Then I might get a glorious 4/5 seconds to browse the contents of the phone then boom another batch of crashes. The phone is completely useless right now, no way to navigate. Also, even with the phone turned on in safe mode or not, I cannot access the files whilst connected to my computer. The charging indicator shows up, computer recognises the device but on the odd occasion it does show up in "my computer" the folder does not open and the file explorer/documents just crashes. Xperia companion doesn't work either.
There was also an issue with charging/transferring media with the charge port. Bad connections but it was made better using the Sony original cable I have now. It charges alright now (instead of needing "the right" angle). Still, as far as I can remember data was hard to trasnfer, maybe I got 10 songs copied over before it stopped responding and had to cancel. All the files on the SD card I saved of course but the ones on internal storage are still there. I browsed the album for a few seconds and I just want to get them on my pc. I tried to copy to SD card but I can't perform that with the constant bombarding of crashing app error notifications that fill the screen. Also it seems like once the phone is on, I can navigate around (with the bombardment of crashing) but once the screen is allowed to time out it doesn't wake back with the power button. To mess with it again I have to pull the battery and put it back in. I have booted in safe mode to no avail, apps still keep crashing.
Please please help. I have USB debugging enabled if that helps? I just want to drag and drop my images and then the phone can sit in a draw. I am sure a factory reset would have it working back to normal but I can't lose the files.
Btw I think SONY is purposefully killing off these older devices. The phone worked flawlessly, yes it's older and not as fast but there was not a single issue (besides maybe the charge port wear). This issue with crashing is completely software related after an android update.
The phone is not rooted and no random software was installed (just social media and the like).
THANK you for any help!
Brad
Hey which rom are you using? do you have unlock your bootloader? if you are using stock rom and not unlock your phone bootloader then it can be resolve by using a software repair using sony pc companion.

Obviously you move all of your stuff to a computer or usb SSD or HDD and factory reset or flash stock firmware with XiaoMiFlash tool.

Yesterday my phone kept restarting, and my Sim card wasn't functioning when it did turn on. It wouldn't even power on after a while, had to wait for about 20 minutes and try again. One weird thing I noticed is I couldnt search settings (setting suggestions wouldn't work) I used an air compressor on the Sim card slot with the cover removed and it seemed to help. But I also did some software changes to see if it would help. like turned off memory extension and cleared dalvik cache and cache with recovery. I'm not sure what exactly made my phone function like normal again.
So after about a day the issue starts again, first my Sim card shows up beside my clock with an X through it,the data icon gets grayed out, I will not be able to access the mobile networks option In settings without my phone freezing and a process has stopped responding message ,and my settings suggestions stop working too. I'm just really confused lol, because it seems like software, but the only thing that actually made my phone work like normal again, was removing the Sim card slot and blowing Compressed air into the phone. Simply removing and reinserting the sim card did nothing, but the air helped.
I can't tell if I'm having a software issue, or hardware issue, or I suppose it could also be the sim card itself maybe, but yeah if anyone can shed any light it would be amazing.

I think something is overheating in the phone. I haven't had any issues since it's been a little cooler weather wise, where I live.
Second guess is the phones been "sweating" moving it from hot outside to cool inside ac, maybe created internal moisture condisation. I'm leaning towards mosture because taking Compressed air to the open sim card slot, seemed to be the only thing that worked.
I am wondering if this is something that can be easily repaired (opening phone and resoldering maybe) or at least that's my hope, I really don't have another phone to use if I send this one away to be fixed.
Edit: So it's been a few weeks now and I haven't had any issues.
I downgraded my kernel to previous version (BaalamKernel-2.1.1_alioth vs newest)
And I've been using my phone without its case in hopes it can breathe better or dry out any moisture that built up over time.
Still not sure if it's hardware or software but knock on wood, no issues so far.

Display randomly stopped working and I’m screwed.

Hello there fellow M51 users. I’ve been using the M51 ever since it launched. all was good, until last month, the display just stopped working. Took it to Samsung service centre, and they said it was the display. Kinda frustrating how it just stopped working despite having no physical damages. Anyways, I set out to find an aftermarket display as replacement, as the original one from samsung costs wayy more than the phone’s current resale value. After installing the 3rd party display, the phone turned on (in safe mode?) and then turned off a few seconds after I got into the home screen. This kept on happening as i tried restarting. I also noticed the phone get unusually hot. Now a dialogue box saying “Serious software issue detected” pops up while booting with a “Check for updates” prompt. I believe it is updated to the latest version. Is there any way over this? The technician suggests we do a factory reset, but I have 5 years worth of valuable data in there. Can I at least be able to retrieve the data? Should i try using an original display, would that solve this? Technicians locally are unbothered and lazy to help, so I hope someone can help me from here. Thanks a lot in advance.
Welcome to XDA.
If it will boot into safe mode you can get the data.
If you get into safe mode don't power it down, grab the data. Go into safe mode, if it crashes in safe mode you got big problems...
In the future redundantly backup all critical data otherwise sooner or latter you will likely lose it.
If you have expandable storage always use it as a data drive; all critical goes here, don't encrypt it, and then backup the SD card data on a regular basis. Many time if the OS or phone crashes/burns the SD card and its data are still intact.

I have a 3rd party display in my M51, it is LCD, you can take it the guy who fixed it and he'll have a solution. My phone works fine except sometime when i use a "amoled specific feature" the display goes blank and i need to hard reboot.
