Rebooting every few minutes - my tablet now resembles a potato - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I have a vanilla, unrooted tablet which had Marshmallow installed a few weeks ago. It reboots constantly (like I am lucky to get 2-3 minutes out of it). Sometimes it reboots 7 or 8 times in a row until I give up and hold the power button down.
Have cleared cache and factory reset (multiple times). This hasnt solved the problem. I thought this might be an issue with the Google Play Store, as it generally crashes as soon as I run this (as the first thing I do after the reset) - so after one of the resets I downloaded the latest playstore APK and installed it. Also did not login to the play store in case this was corrupted or something. Have tried this without loading ANY apps other than the stock that comes after the reset - but still the issue persists.
All of the above has been done with the SD card removed - and with full charge
Generally it crashes as soon as I try and run any app or go to settings etc. This is even with the completely factory reset and wiped tablet with no additional apps installed.
Having tried everything, am down to the theory of hardware fault - specifically the battery. After the last update (which failed half way through) I had big problems with battery life and the tablet got (and still gets) quite hot. I am thinking something in the new update might have put extra stress on the battery, which after a few weeks has caused it to fail.
Is this possible, and is there anyway in logs etc to tell if this is hardware or software?
Anyway, other than throwing this away and buying a new one - am not sure what the next step to solve this is. (Maybe revert to previous Android?). Any suggestions or help is welcome, but I am thinking of throwing this away and not throwing good money after bad...
(Have emailed Samsung but of course never heard back - so suffice to say my next tab wont be Samsung)

try download your stock firmware and flash it with odin via your pc.

i had problem with my tab...i had restarts always...whatever i do, every few seconds it restarts by itself... but it works normaly on cable so i went to search for a solution and lol i laughed when i saw what was the solution...i removed the backcover fo the device and then just reatached the battery connector cable and thats it and now my tab works normaly even on battery.not sure if u have similar issue but u can try it it will take u 5 min work and also u have video on Youtube how to dissambly galaxy tab S...cheers mate and wish u good luck

I solved this prob yesterday, itb works fine nw, didnt crash since, just open the tablet remove the basttery vlean its pins then reinstall it
U can find vedios explaining hw to remomve z battery

OK - have updated firmware with ODIN (and tried 3 different versions going back to Android 5)
Have undone the back and removed battery and reset cables. Even replaced the battery with one I bought off Ebay
Cant think of anything else, must be a fault on a board somewhere...
I think she is dead. :crying:
Thanks to those who posted and sent me PM's - really do appreciate it.

By the way, it is definitely something to do with the power. When it reboots and it is attached to a USB, the screen flashes up with the empty battery (ie charging from completely empty) symbol momentarily (maybe a second or 2 tops) before flashing up with 64% or whatever the actual battery level is...

If your battery can go from 0% to 64% in a few seconds, the battery connector needs to be resoldered due to cracked solder joints.
This rework only takes 5 minutes , ask a repair shop or anyone knows how to solder for assistant.

Artemis crashes - battery problem?

Hi,
My Artemis is running Meschle's Touch 4.02 WWE for a long time now.
A couple of months ago it started to crash, apparently randomly. It started after I installed auto-hibernate, but this could be a coincidence.
What happens most of the time is that the screen is turning black (fades away), starting from the bottom. Sometimes it just gets stuck on the home or other window or it soft resets automatically. I also got twice a white screen that said: 'reset due to sudden power loss'. Soft resets sometimes work, sometimes it gets stuck on the boot screen. I did several hard-resets with no luck.
I am trying for a long time to figure out a pattern. Maybe it has to do with the radio consuming too much power? Upgraded to 03.21.90: same problem.
Last two crashes happened while trying to start Opera mini.
After a crash the clock is wrong (the time of the crash the clock stopped).
It seems to happen more often while charging.
I've changed the battery: it seemed to be better for a while (two weeks) but then it started again.
I've disabled everything, leaving only the phone (no data, no HTC home, ....) but still the phone crashes from time to time (sometimes every hour, sometimes every 5 mins, .....).
Battery status indicates some weird things too: after charging up to i.e. 35% then soft reset batt status indicated 58%...or batt status is 30% then 2 mins later status is 2%. The OMAP function is turned off, because sometimes while booting the cpu is stuck on a very low frequency (screen flickering, very slow boot, ...).
I've tried to flash with another rom (original HTC) but I get: 'update utility not for this device' or something similar. I've tried several RUU's en always USPL.
Does any of this make sense to anyone? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
I have exactly the same problem. Think solved from 2 days. Changed the SD card i have 2 one 2 gigs and one 1 gigs the problem was with the 2 gigs card. Try to backup your data and format the card.

Thx, I'll try that. However, even when the sd card is removed the crashes occur.
Just had another crash....connected via usb to my pc: after 5 secs screen faded to black. I had to soft reset. After that some 'invisible window' was blocking the start menu. Closed it (via the close button top right) and got the start menu again. Re-connected to usb and is ok until now....
I also see 173mA of drain.
I had the same problem.............and i change back to the original swedish wm6 rom and it was better for a couple of days, then got worse started to freze fade out until one day it "died" now i can only get into bootloader but cant boot any roms not the original swedish rom (wm6) or any other rom, in boot loader it only says IPL 3.13.0001 SPL 3.13.0001 no gsm or other stuff but when conected to USB it says usb, I tried the SD flash to but no good so my sugestion it that u see to that ur device is "open spl" if it take the same route that mine did.
(i change to a brand new battery when the problem where starting but taht didnt help.....)
I guess now as i understand it my only hope is to find the original shiped rom wm 5 swedish rom?! and try if that will flash onto my device.
i hope u dont get the same problem as me.
Only problems, no solutions...
Mine (p3300; Black&Blue v5) got a new Battery, new SD-Card. Did´nt help. I removed the SD, removed SIM, loaded the battery, then turned it on again and from now on it´s sometimes booting, sometimes not. If it´s booted up (after long time lying with removed battery) it doesn´t live long enough to flash it with another (old) rom.
Now it´s lying next to me, with all this expensive accesoires, doesn´t talk to me and say what the problem is. My Provider called me and asked if I want a new one.
Again HTC? I love the functions of WM...
I have the same problem with my Dopod M700 (Love)
But mine doesn't freeze it just auto soft reset itself... i don't know whats going on... somebody please help.
Changing to different ROM doesn't solve the problems... put back the original factory ROM also doesn't help.
Here still the same problem.
I've upgraded the radio to 03.21.90: now WIFI isn't working anymore and the phone still 'crashes'. I'll change it to 03.18.90 and see what happens.
I've emptied the battery several times (until bootloader switches off) and recharged with the original AC adapter. Did a hard reset on battery 100%: problem remains.
There are several threads with the same problem. I didn't find an answer, exept maybe to replace the motherboard.
I really wonder if there's anyone who knows what is causing the problem.
It could be the graphics card (screen fading) or the battery/charge chip...no idea.
I've also noticed that when a crash occurs, it often takes some time until it boots again, as if the Artemis needs to 'cool down'.

I'm having exactly the same problem which happened after I upgrade from Artemis love 32 to 33.
I have tried everything mentioned here, changed th Rom 5 times, went back to the Ship Rom, but the system keep on crashing. This is the second time this is happening to my Artemis. The solution at the first time was replacing the motherboard and nothing else, as it has worked fine after that.
I posted my problem in another thread here but no solution yet. Four days back and after I got enough with it, I took my Artemis to the HTC work shop and they told me that they couldn't find the reason for the crash, and the only way to solve the problem is to replace the motherboard which will cost me too much.
Strange it happens to several phones, and more or less in the same way.
I've changed my Rom to B&B 5.0 now. Still same problem.
Wifi isn't working at all anymore: tried several radio versions, none brings back the wifi. Is this the end of my Artemis?
Me 2
Jup it happened to mine too, I returned it to the shop and when they returned it they said that they had replaced something but they couldn't tell me what It worked for a couple of months but now the same problem so it's back at the shop again... (luckily i had 2 years of warranty) So i guess it's not really a software problem.

I hope u really try to get them to awnser what they change this time and then u can tell us? who knows it might help to know that.
So...installed B&B 5.0 (thx Tom ).
I did several complete 'battery charging cycles'.
I formatted my SDHC card.
It seems to me that it crashes less now (only once yesterday, not yet today).
Wifi seems to be definitly gone.
It probably isn't SW-related, but why would it crash less now than before?
I think that the most probable cause would be the chip that handles the battery status.
Let's hope that the chip somehow got resetted with the charging cycles.
No luck....it crashed all the time yesterday.
It seems that it happens more often when it is in my pocket (temperature related?).
When it lies on the cupboard it seems that it stays ok...again very strange.
Also while charging the battery status was 48%. I removed the charger and the status jumped to 100% :s.
Does anyone know how much it costs to have the MB replaced?
MDA Compact III
Hi!
I had the same promlem with my MDA Compact III!
I think it's a hardware problem. I tried so many roms, original, and cooked too... change the battery, clean the motherboard, but didn't help.
I was nervous, take out the battery for 5sec then reinstall it and took it in the refrigerator (NOT IN THE FREEZER!!!) for about 10minutes!
The result: don't crash about 1 hour!
So i took it back for 1day. And now, it works 2weeks continously, with no crash.
But unfortunately the battery (also the new one) holds the charge only 1day.

Same problem here. I called HTC, they picked up my device, replaced the inside (motherboard) I guess because my device has a different IMEI number now. Very quick service, within one week my device was at my desk again.
I had similar problems.
had my HTC repaired (new MB)
problems remained the same.
after two repairs I received a new device and even that did not solve my problems.
Up till I bought a new battery
now he is working perfect again!
Hi i have the same problem as all of you. But is there really no solution to this problem except for sending it up to HTC and let the **** be replaced?
I also have the exprience that when its in my pocket is crashes also directly. but when it's just lying on the table nothing happens.
It is now lying there for 2 days without crashing.
i flashed it back to the original ROM. but still crashes after i put it in my pocket.
when i reset it (i cannot turn it normal on with the on button) it turns back on and starts normaly. i can use it now aslong as i don't put it in my pocket.
Please will some-one help find a solution for fixen it what causes these problems.
Many thanks in Advanced Fill

just get a new battery and it hopefully will do...it solved my problems...first time i hat the issue....right now i'm having it again...and it seems like the battery
you say it stays like that or 2 days...try running some heavy apps like igo or something other which is memory and battery consuming..it will probably crash..if it does...i'm 95% sure it's the battery

Exactly my case!!!
I am fed up of being consistently taking my battery out or soft reseting. If it stays over the table quiet, it's ok. The moment it goes into my pocket...
Just ordered Hero...

Thanks for replying, it seems that the problem has fixed itself. i put it in the original charger for about 3 or 4 days. it still crashed a couple times just reset with the charger connected put it back. i now just disconnect it from changer (2 days) (after 3 or 4 days in the charger) without any crash. runned tomtom for couple or houres?
i also turned the phone function off and removed the simcard.
hopefully it will keep running and then i gonna try to put my simcard back in.
Thanks

Ok it crashed already again

a very strange hard brick

Hi!
First of all i got AOKP + Franco kernel for 2w without any problem and I didn't change any option since last week.
This morning i rebooted it, it switched off and it didn't start again.
I cannot switch one my nexus again since then. I have always a black screen, also if I try to enter in download mode or in the recovery.
I tried to connect to my computer and smt times my laptop see a omap4400 (i'm not sure about the name) but after few second it disappears.
Tomorrow I'm going to the service center... But I have a big doubt:
What the hell happened this morning?
Thanks
Remove the battery for 5 minutes and try again.
If that doesn't work,
Follow this guide:
1. Download the zip file from http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f634...eeeee-1465412/, created by Legija
2. Extract zip to whatever location you're comfortable with (I used Android directory)
3. Open up Device Manager (Hold down Windows Key, press R, the type in devmgmt.msc and press OK)
4. Go to actions menu, select Add Legacy Hardware
5. Choose install manually, then have disk. Browse to where you extracted the zip, select the 'inf' file in usb_drv_windows
6. Choose OMAP, you'll get a popup if on Win 7, continue anyway (driver not signed)
7. Once completed with driver, pull battery out of phone, then plug it into USB
8. Double click omap4460_tuna_hs_pro.bat to start the process
9. Once completed, unplug from USB, put battery back in, and power-up!
10. Extra step - depending on what's been done, it may 'brick' again - suggest to do a restore or a wipe reinstall afterwards to be certain (mine bricked again next reboot)

I'm having the exact same problem. I saw my phone at maybe 10% battery in the AM, said screw it and let it die, woke up this morning and plugged the phone in and nothing. No LED light, black screen, completely unresponsive. I've tried every trick in the book, and the only one that seemed to work marginally even was using a different battery, which got my phone to boot to the encryption screen, but then shut off again. It did that twice, and now both batteries are useless.
I used Legija's program to try and bring some life back to my gnex, even though it's not the international version, just in hopes of getting some of my data back (I have already started the replacement process with Verizon since the phone was insured), but I got no luck there either.
It's extremely disappointing and annoying to me that this phone survived all sorts of ROM installations (I was also using AOKP on 4.1 if someone wants to start making connections), reformatting, tweaking, almost every setting on that phone was modified by me.
Not only that but almost any software or hardware problem I did run into I could solve in maybe an hour, but I let my charge run out and the phone just up and bricks itself? Now, that's just bull****... I would be very curious as to an explanation as to WHY on earth this would happen. Very confusing.
Not to hijack the thread, but my interest here is not restoring the phone to working condition but just seeing if I can pull my data off of it. I wouldn't even be posting here had I been able to have an SD card with my gnex, which I figured was unnecessary at the time I bought it since I knew the space on their was enough for me already, and the added branding of "Nexus" brand which had me under the impression it was maybe stable enough by itself. Not a mistake I'll make again..
Is it at all possible to get the data off of my phone at this point? At least partially? I believe encryption makes it impossible but I'm rather stubborn. Any help would be greatly appreciated..

So just to be clear... You've been able to get it to boot all the way up to the encryption screen, right? If so you should be able to get into fastboot (Holding down BOTH volume rockers and the power key.) From there you could relock/unlock the bootloader to do a full factory wipe which might solve your boot issue.
As far as the data loss from the wipe, you could then try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1994705

I was able to get it to the encryption screen with my old battery that had a little bit of charge left in it twice, but it shut itself down on me both times. So now both batteries are useless.. I took it to the Verizon store hoping they would maybe try one of their batteries, but they just called customer service and told me they're just going to replace it at this point.
I have a feeling the charging mechanism is somehow damaged, because when I did get it to the encryption screen I had it plugged into a wall outlet and it wasn't charging at all. So, I can't turn the phone on whatsoever anymore.. if I could turn it on I could solve this problem... but it simply refuses to boot. The closest I came to interfacing with it was the OMAP Flash script, which did work, but didn't fix the problem.
So maybe if I could get the phone working enough to use ADB with it I could get my data back, but not even that seems possible..

If the phone isn't charging then there's something wrong with the USB port. One way to test that would be to use a battery charger. Also, try a different cable. I've had issues with a few different cables that for whatever reason started to not fit properly in the phone.
If you're USB port has gone bad then you'll need to either A) Always use an external battery charger. B) Get a replacement. C) Fix it yourself (Good guide here: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repairi...+LTE)+Micro+USB+Charge+Port+&+Main+Mic/9641/1 )

[Q] SPH-L710 reboots in recovery Battery, power button issues possible

I have read the other posts regarding the rebooting issues of the Sprint Galaxy S3 variant, but I seem to have a touch more difficult problem. My phone constantly resets and seems to be getting worse. It now will reset in the middle of recovery. I was able to wipe the cache and dalvik and then it started resetting even more frequently in recovery and made reloading the rom impossible. It even resets in the download screen. So it makes it impossible to use Odin and other applications. If anyone has any ideas let me know. I have a few possible options that I am pondering. The following is what led up to this if you need some background:
A week ago, I noticed that my battery suddenly was not charging when wifi was on. I turned it off thinking it was some glitch and reset the phone and plugged it in to charge. It said it was at 100 % some hours later. then I turned it back on again and within a couple minutes, it said it was at 22%. So I hard reset and then plugged it into the wall, but it was still not charging. I had go somewhere,so I plugged it into the car charger and enabled fast charge. I turned on my data and all the sudden it rebooted, lost my wifi password, but when it came back on, it was charging properly. So I thought it was just some odd glitch. Charged properly for days.
Then I noticed the phone starting to randomly reset maybe once very other day when texting. I was actually going to put on a new rom tomorrow thinking maybe my old one had become corrupt. Then it suddenly increased drastically tonight to where it was starting to reset constantly. I thought maybe the button was stuck, and pulled off my otter case to make sure it wasnt being pressed down oddly, but it continued. Then I went into recovery and was able to wipe the cache and dalvik before it got really bad and now it won't even let me stay in recovery for any length of time. I almost got a rom loaded when it reset and its been resetting faster than ever. Becoming unresponsive to button presses as well. Even when I could get into the recovery, it would keep showing "swipe screen to open," as the power button was apparently continuing to activate or the phone was trying to reset itself. And yes, I have tried a battery pull several times and then tried to get into recovery, only to be booted out right as I see the recovery screen if I get there.
So that is my problem. I can't flash odin or anything else as the phone just keeps resetting. Part of me thinks to get a new battery and try to see if that doesn't solve my issue, as maybe the battery is causing the phone to reset? But part me is also thinking maybe the power button has gone sticky suddenly? It won't charge it seems as the red light will not come on and it keeps resetting before the battery charging icon can even come up. Any help or advice would be appreciated. I am leaning towards the battery going bad suddenly and shorting out the phone. I now have the battery, which last I saw was at 48% (It was charging when this happened), out of the phone and am waiting till morning to hopefully pick up a new battery. But I would appreciate any insights into this issue.
Thank you very much
Same issue
I'm having the same issue described above with the S3 constantly rebooting. I can get into download mode but it restarts a few seconds into the flash. I have tried a different battery but that did not solve the problem - I am also thinking it's a power button issue... any suggestions?

I just had my phone replaced for same reason ( Thank god for insurance) Download mode would last about 5 seconds, Recovery would do the same. I managed to get a stock restore with flash counter reset to boot as i was walking into the Sprint store for the techs to look at this lol.. Same exact thing happened on my S2. Power button is done. If you have INS call and get it replaced (Took me about a week for new phone)
I read some post on possibly using Samsung Kies to flash a new ROM, but that was for the international version. I would be curious if anyone has ever tried this or if its possible to replace the power button with a part replacement? I have ordered an S4 but this time I will make sure to use the home and left touch pad more often to unlock the phone and save wear on the power button. I wold still be interested f anyone has found a fix for this.

I'm having the same issue described above with the S3 constantly rebooting. I can get into download mode but it restarts a few seconds into the flash. I have tried a different battery but that did not solve the problem - I am also thinking it's a power button issue... any suggestions?

So after looking around, I am pretty convinced this the power button,as people describe on this question. If you don't have insurance, I see there are selling replacements or you can pay someone to replace and fix the power button fairly affordably on ebay. I might go the second route, as I want it fine right and the man had a 100 percent rating positive, and I dont really know what I am doing lol. Thanks everyone for your answers.

[Q] Device reboots after SIM unlock

Hi all,
recently my D855 with v20T (root/xposed) started to sort of randomly reboot. It seems like once the device gets too hot, it's gone.
Happens rarely during general usage, often while playing a game, and especially often when starting the camera.
But it behaves strangely in general: if I do *not* unlock the SIM (and thus can't use the phone), the device runs forever, without a reboot, no matter what the device temperature is. Same for recovery (TWRP), it can stay there for hours and heat up however it likes, no reboot.
Removing the SIM and/or microSD does not make a difference, battery level does not matter.
I pulled a backup of the stock ROM, wiped everything (system, data, cache, dalvik) and flashed Fulmics 5.
Unlocking worked once or twice, the next time I entered my SIM pin, the lock screen showed, then reboot. This behaviour (unlock SIM, reboot) repeats endlessly. If I leave it turned off for 10-15 minutes - or sitting at the SIM unlock screen - it most of the time works fine after unlocking.
Wiped again, flashed robalm's v30F ROM.
Guess what, exactly the same.
On both variants, the phone got rather hot during the "optimizing app x of 190" screen, but never rebooted, only after I unlocked the SIM.
Let it sit overnight on the unlock screen, no reboot at all. Unlocked this morning, added my google account, rebooted - same thing again.
It's starting to drive me crazy, now it froze right in the middle of setting up the google account after another clean flash.
Is the phone prone for repair, or can anyone think of another solution to this weird issue?
Edit: Fun fact: if I manage to do the lock screen swipe before the SIM lock screen comes up, the phone reboots instantly as well.
Edit2: Followed the instructions from this thread to go back to completely stock v20T. Rebooted after optimizing apps before I could even choose a language, ran seemingly fine after this, started bootlooping after the first manual reboot. A full wipe later (volDn+Power) it at least boots. What the hell?
Thank you and best regards,
Sub
I have similar problem. Cant connect issue with exact cause, but it restarts almost every few minutes of use. Camera launch causes restart almost immediately. Phone is unusable. My VolDn button is not working so I'm currently a bit afraid to try anything new... I updated from Fulmics4.1 (i havent got reboot problems since last 1,5week ago) to 5.1 but issue persists even after full wipe. Seriously dont know what to think about it.
At first I thought that reboots are caused by low power (much more frequent with battery under 30%), then maybe big cpu load or high brightness.... now basically everything causes reboots. Im really annoyed this phone been crap since day one...
I havent tried your sim unclocking method as my doesnt have pin security etc. Let me know if you will find out solution.

Just received the device back from LG, they replaced the mainboard, even got a new IMEI and v30c preinstalled.
It is the same case, with the protective glass on top and a dent on the left plus the 2-3 micro-cracks around the frame.
Not sure if they swapped the battery. The problem showed up again with anywhere between 50 and 15 percent battery left.
Unfortunately I only tested it after leaving the shop, after a long walk to the bus which I caught just in time.
Setup assistant completed -> reboot.
Google setup nearly completed -> reboot.
Removed SIM and MicroSD, started phone, started camera, made a movie -> reboot.
Wiped again (strange enough, v30c only has 61 applications to optimize while v20* has 190+?), tried again, same thing.
Next, after letting the back camera take a movie for 2-3 minutes, I wanted to adjust display brightness to the max.
Result: see screenshot. This also happened with the cable plugged in.
I will return it for repair once more tomorrow...
Anyway, thank you for your answers

It's a common thing if you use camera specially if you take video in 4k mode your phone heat up and you can't use full brightness in stock rom it's a feature try moded thermal config...also try new battery if battery percentage suddenly dropped it seems battery issue because i face the same problem....

I used to have thermals installed, the 75 dregrees Celsius variant, iirc.
Everything else was at stock, except for one short excursion to CM12 and one to ... some custom ROM.
Think I never actually took 4k videos, and the first 1,5 years the phone got a bit warmer but never really hot. Only recently it started to get really hot especially when using the camera, this also consistently was what could cause the reboot loops for sure. Other candidates were a few games which use more processing power like Alto's Adventure.
The battery drops by 2-3% after a reboot, because of the load the phone has (and the heat it develops during boot).
Anyway, I added the screenshot to the next repair request, and the woman at the counter said they'd look into the battery specifically (it seems to give out too much voltage, she said), but also check everything else once more.
I'll let them repair up to three times, then ask for a replacement, should be legal within 2 years after purchase in Germany.
Also, next time I'll take the 15 minutes (before doing a 1h/direction trip) to factory reset the phone, set it up and start the camera. If it reboots during any of this -> return, repeat.

Received my phone back from LG, finally.
Battery's broken - it outputs too much power.
Ordered a new battery and just put it in, so far no reboots during setup.
At least this got me a new mainboard and new IMEI

Hahahahahahahahaha
I just wondered why the phone shows 25 GB free everywhere, even without SD.
Turns out, during repair instead of replacing the 16GB/2GB board with an identical one, they installed the 32GB/3GB board

The slow death of my Note 4

Hello!
Everything was working fine until my phone started acting up about 6 months ago. The screen began to become unresponsive, apps crashed when switching between them and random reboots occurred frequently. I thought back then it had to be software related, so I completed multiple factory resets, and completely removed everything on my phone. It became slightly more usable, but these crashed and random reboots still occurred.
Last week, my phone continued to reboot, but a new problem occurred-it no longer would turn on after the reboot. I tried plugging it into the wall, pressing the volume down + home + power to force bootloader mode, but it wouldn't turn on at all. The fix was I had to remove the entire case, take out the battery and put it back in the phone. After that it would turn on, but only for a few minutes before another random reboot occurred and I had to remove the entire battery again. My phone is now virtually useless as I cant before even the basic functions, calling and texting without it becoming unresponsive or shutting off and not turning on.
I narrowed it down to the eMMC chip. I am almost certain that is corrupt, because during some of the reboots it would fail and throw me into download mode with the error:
mmc0_read_fail
or something along those lines. My last attempt at recovering the phone was to the stock rom PE2 with a PIT file (I had created before I started flashing custom roms). Each time I would attempt to flash with ODIN it would result in a:
mmc0_write_fail
However, I was finally able to get the PIT and PE2 firmware to flash. Now I have a half-working phone that will randomly reboot still and in order to turn it back on, the battery has to be pulled out for a minimum of 15 seconds.
New Issue I just noticed: When the screen turns off when the phone is inactive, it won't turn on again after pressing the power or home buttons. Only solution to this is once again, pull battery and hope I boot into system again.
I am pretty sure there is no fix to this problem on the software side, but let me know if you have a suggestion! Thanks!
Same situation. This thing is a lemon!
Sounds like hardware failure.
Replaced the battery yet? My original didn't last fifteen months before it started shutting the phone down. It's the first thing I think of when someone reports having to pull the battery.
Are you checking battery capacity before the battery pull by plugging in when it shuts down? Mine showed 0%. Before the shutdown, it may have indicated as high as 30%. It gets worse.
You didn't mention capacity when plugged so I thought I'd ask.

One of my note 4 had same issue. Its a hardware issue. I was able to get the phone working by using a heatgun on the motherboard to try and reflow the solder on the chips. The phone works like brand new after the heatgun but the phone would only work for like 3 or 4 days before crapping out again. Ultimately ended up buying a used motherboard on ebay with a clean esn and its working perfectly again.
My wife's Note 4 started the random reboot thing and screen being unresponsive thing last week. She said it randomly started after installing Snapchat, so she uninstalled it hoping that would fix it. It didnt. I put a new battery in it thinking the original was bad, but still same issues. Then did a factory reset but that didnt work. After a lot of searching I stumbled on to someone who mentioned downloading an app called Wakelock. I did and phone has been running smoothly for several days now.
I also recently did the most recent update hoping that would fix the issue, it didnt but during the install I did get one error of emmc read failure or something like that. May just order a used/new motherboard just in case.
Just be careful when swapping out the motherboard as it essentially is taking apart the whole phone including the removal of the LCD.
