I've tried the stock rooted Froyo 2.2, Ava Froyo 2.2, and OMJ Froyo and the all work great (thanks everyone) but seems like Android WiFi Tether doesn't work on any of them. Is anyone experiencing this?
Actually WiFi Tether works but my laptop can't catch the signals whereas it does on OMJ 2.1fine.
same here
I unfortunately have to agree with you...wireless tethering just does not work yet with this new kernel. I have tried all the same HTC froyo roms as well... I can broadcast and my WiFi device can see it and try to connect but cannot get an ip address ..always 169... I hope this gets fixed soon
I don't use tethering that much anymore (now that I'm not in high school) but once I start college next month I'll need it more than ever, so idk if I should flash 2.2 yet. From everything I've read nobody's gotten it to work on any froyo roms yet.
first, q and a, not development, is where this should have been posted.
second, i'm on cm6 nightly 7/29, with the new radio and wimax flashed over it. i had no problem at all using the froyo hotspot (obviously not sprint's, bc no sprint packaged material is on the cm6 aosp release). it's not 4g, but it works. i tethered my ps3 with no issues at all.
im in same boat... once i head back to college i'm going to want to take advantage of the unlimited 4G... and without wifi tether thats going to suck.. hopefully someone can figure this out -
maybe someone will make a kernel with it enabled based on whatever in 2.1 that allows it ...?
does PDANET work? anyone who upgraded?
this is in wrong section but I used version 2_0_5-pre4 and it works fine. right now on Stock Froyo rooted but switching to Fresh 3.0 beta 2 in a few min
cyanogenmod's rom has working tethering. doesn't have 4g or sense, but wifi tether works, as does everything else.
werid
weird, still not working for me, I am going back to 2.1 OMJ for now, I need my free 4G WIFI TETHER DEVS!
I don't really care about tethering, but can you get any of the fps "fixed" kernels to work on any of the 2.2 roms?

Does the wireless tethering capability that comes stock with Froyo not work for you? Works fine for me in CM6.
Need some time?
The leak has only been released less than 2 days therefore obviously still have a lot of issue with old APP. just give the Developers sometime and I am certain they will come up with something. Beside the leaked 2.2 floating around is not really a final copy anyway so what's the point of working so hard on something that will be replace in a few days. Think all the Developers should just give themselves a beer, sit back relax to calm down their nerves so that their brains will be working at 100% when the final release come out.
Oh,

Didn't try that but does that work with 4G too? (if you didn't sign up for 4G?)

Can you give specifics of your setup? I tried the Evo-Froyo-2.2-Rooted-Stock-3.26.651.3-Deodexed ROM (with latest radio + wimax) but could not get version 2_0_5-pre4 to work. It starts wifi tethering BUT my laptop cannot find /discover it.
Thanks.

Me too.. yes sir.. it no work
he is probably on cm6. you cant really compare the two roms since sprint has its hand in locking up a native feature of the device for profit. we probably need the kernel tweaked by one of the devs in order to get this working.
Yeah, my laptop cannot see it either.

Everyone with an Evo on Sprint is "signed up" for 4G. It may not be available where you are at, but you are paying for it and "signed up" for it.
i ended up purchasing pdanet for tethering. was only 18.95. to be honest this phone is great, but we all know the battery's shortcomings. im ok with killing 2 birds with one stone by tethering usb and charging the phone at the same time . Any solution is cheaper than sprint's recurring tethering charge.
Does pdanet allow tethering over 4g in a 2.2 rom? If so, what speeds are you getting?
It's pretty much between Cyanogen and TeamFenix at this point. I don't care about bluetooth as I don't really use it at this time. I just want the fastest with most functionality.
Thoughts/Suggestions?
they are both very good 2.2 ROMs... fast and stable. personally I am partial to TF1.7.1 because it is the easiest to use the Google Wi-Fi tether (no extra settings other than allowing Super User permissions) to turn your phone into a hot spot for your laptop, net-book, PS3... ect. The GPS works without issue (I haven't had any problems using the Google Navigation Beta).
Thanks sir. I don't normally use GPS on my phone since it kills the battery and I have a Garmin GPS for the car.
no problem man... I just got in to the Android game in April but I do my best to help where I can. even if my wife does call me her "phone nerd", but then she is glad I found a much cheaper hobby than my modded tC
I was using CM6 stable but recently switched to TeamFenix 2.0, it's based off of a CM6 nightly. Very stable, smooth and all around great. There is an issue with the CM6 stable rom where android market wouldn't install/update a lot of apps at random. TF 2.0 doesn't have that issue at all, then again, I'm sure the current cyanogen nightlies fixed that issue also.

ok...
so im rooted and running myn's warm 2.2 rls5, with netarchy's 4.2.1 kernel currently, but i switch between a few kernels, mostly using netarchy's 4.1.9.1...
and i use my wireless tethering quite often (i have 4g coverage, and have had up to 10mb connection speeds, with downloads up to 1300kBps)
by the way im using wireless tether 2.0.6
so heres the deal... the other day i somehow managed to switch the upstream/downstream monitor to display kBps/mBps instead of the standard kbps/mbps... and for the life of me i cannot figure out how i did this. im fairly technical savvy, but i am at whits end trying to figure this out! in fact, this evening i earlier had it displaying kBps (@ my current upstream/downstream rate), then i wanted to see what my current connection speed was registering at, given my current downloading i was doing, so i wanted to switch it back to kbps, and somehow i did...without figuring out how i did it. so now im at a stalemate with this app. more now than ever, this is simply a quest to not let an app get the best of me! i downloaded 2.0.5 pre-14, that came on myn's rom, and installed that version; just to check in case i had a different version that i had done that with, then tried 2.0.6, and so on. only to come out fruitless.
so basically if anyone has figured out this magic trick please help me by spilling the beans... hell, get to figuring it out of you are bored. its really not a highly complicated app, and im far to lazy to read the code on it and figure it out...
any insight? anyone?
I have been using CM7 and for the most part it works pretty good but depending on the circumstances the phone could crash and/or not go back to 4G without rebooting.
It seems that certain functions like texting or applications that sync can lead to a crash so I just did a reload on a clean wipe, turned off all of the account syncing and only have gapps, market and a non syncing gmail loaded. But even with that I am still not holding the network connection the way I want and seem to have to mes with the wimax or reboot the phone to get 4G back.
My signal is good since I am on a hil, know where the 4G tower is and stick my phone way up a vent above all the other buildings.
Is there a stripped rom that is basically just a phone and a internet connection? Old nightlys, tuning suggestions or ?? that would work better and/or do a better job of forcing 4G after an interuption?
I have not loaded sense and new radios in a while if that has anything to do with it.
Thanks
Hey,
There is no so to speak best tether rom, but I have noticed others work better then some. Personally when I use cm7 each day my data speed slows I have no idea why but it does. I personally really like RCMix3d it works great smooth good battery life as a rom and I have had no complaints about tethering its been working well with me.
But if your set up is working I would just stay set with that!
Hope it helped

I suggest you use RCMix3D Runny v5.1 by sbryan12144. Its fast & smooth
Cm7 tethering works good. Its also good on miui roms on most phones. Also for those having trouble tethering. Try wireless tether 2.0.7 which works on almost everything.

I use barnacle... i like it. Super simple. Is stable.
I been using Deck's rom, but now my W7 64bit machine is having a problem with the Remote NDIS driver which I can't seem to find.
I have a couple old verizon HTC Droid phones we no longer use as phones and was wondering if they could be turned into mini tablets capable of using our home wifi network and google play? It would be a good way to recycle theses and keep them in use. Ive been reading about rooting and the custom roms in the forums and was just wondering if this has been done before?
Flash paranoid android rom
If available
You should definitely root the phones, but I've upgraded to the galaxy nexus and have been using my incredible as a WiFi only device for the past few months. I'm rooted on CM7 (http://get.cm/get/3j) and ADW EX Launcher.
So far this is the best stuff that I've found to do without a data plan:
Run the WiFi only script found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1217038
I use an app called Tablet Talk to transfer SMS from my gnex to my dinc over the same wifi network or via bluetooth. If you identify the dinc as a tablet in the app it works just fine. The app isn't optimized for such a small screen, but I've been in contact with with the developers and an update is due within the next few weeks that will fix the user interface.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apdroid.tabtalk&hl=en
You should be able to use Tablet Talk without being rooted, but the WiFi only script can't be run unless you have root access.
I'm interested in hearing what other people are doing with their wifi only dinc's...
Just inherited the dinc from my mom when she moved to the RAZR max. It is now my four year olds. That way he will leave my gs2 alone. Removed the dialer so 911 won't get random calls. Installed a bunch of kids games, locked play store down, installed go launcher and hid all the bloat in folders. Eventually I'll get around to rooting it and get rid of it all for real. For some reason the dinc doesn't like my cables and it keeps failing when I try to root.
