[Q] Wireless tether question... - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok...
so im rooted and running myn's warm 2.2 rls5, with netarchy's 4.2.1 kernel currently, but i switch between a few kernels, mostly using netarchy's 4.1.9.1...
and i use my wireless tethering quite often (i have 4g coverage, and have had up to 10mb connection speeds, with downloads up to 1300kBps)
by the way im using wireless tether 2.0.6
so heres the deal... the other day i somehow managed to switch the upstream/downstream monitor to display kBps/mBps instead of the standard kbps/mbps... and for the life of me i cannot figure out how i did this. im fairly technical savvy, but i am at whits end trying to figure this out! in fact, this evening i earlier had it displaying kBps (@ my current upstream/downstream rate), then i wanted to see what my current connection speed was registering at, given my current downloading i was doing, so i wanted to switch it back to kbps, and somehow i did...without figuring out how i did it. so now im at a stalemate with this app. more now than ever, this is simply a quest to not let an app get the best of me! i downloaded 2.0.5 pre-14, that came on myn's rom, and installed that version; just to check in case i had a different version that i had done that with, then tried 2.0.6, and so on. only to come out fruitless.
so basically if anyone has figured out this magic trick please help me by spilling the beans... hell, get to figuring it out of you are bored. its really not a highly complicated app, and im far to lazy to read the code on it and figure it out...
any insight? anyone?

Froyo 2.2 ROMS - Android WiFi Tether?

I've tried the stock rooted Froyo 2.2, Ava Froyo 2.2, and OMJ Froyo and the all work great (thanks everyone) but seems like Android WiFi Tether doesn't work on any of them. Is anyone experiencing this?
Actually WiFi Tether works but my laptop can't catch the signals whereas it does on OMJ 2.1fine.
same here
I unfortunately have to agree with you...wireless tethering just does not work yet with this new kernel. I have tried all the same HTC froyo roms as well... I can broadcast and my WiFi device can see it and try to connect but cannot get an ip address ..always 169... I hope this gets fixed soon
I don't use tethering that much anymore (now that I'm not in high school) but once I start college next month I'll need it more than ever, so idk if I should flash 2.2 yet. From everything I've read nobody's gotten it to work on any froyo roms yet.
first, q and a, not development, is where this should have been posted.
second, i'm on cm6 nightly 7/29, with the new radio and wimax flashed over it. i had no problem at all using the froyo hotspot (obviously not sprint's, bc no sprint packaged material is on the cm6 aosp release). it's not 4g, but it works. i tethered my ps3 with no issues at all.
im in same boat... once i head back to college i'm going to want to take advantage of the unlimited 4G... and without wifi tether thats going to suck.. hopefully someone can figure this out -
maybe someone will make a kernel with it enabled based on whatever in 2.1 that allows it ...?
does PDANET work? anyone who upgraded?
this is in wrong section but I used version 2_0_5-pre4 and it works fine. right now on Stock Froyo rooted but switching to Fresh 3.0 beta 2 in a few min
cyanogenmod's rom has working tethering. doesn't have 4g or sense, but wifi tether works, as does everything else.
werid
weird, still not working for me, I am going back to 2.1 OMJ for now, I need my free 4G WIFI TETHER DEVS!
I don't really care about tethering, but can you get any of the fps "fixed" kernels to work on any of the 2.2 roms?

Does the wireless tethering capability that comes stock with Froyo not work for you? Works fine for me in CM6.
Need some time?
The leak has only been released less than 2 days therefore obviously still have a lot of issue with old APP. just give the Developers sometime and I am certain they will come up with something. Beside the leaked 2.2 floating around is not really a final copy anyway so what's the point of working so hard on something that will be replace in a few days. Think all the Developers should just give themselves a beer, sit back relax to calm down their nerves so that their brains will be working at 100% when the final release come out.
Oh,

Didn't try that but does that work with 4G too? (if you didn't sign up for 4G?)

Can you give specifics of your setup? I tried the Evo-Froyo-2.2-Rooted-Stock-3.26.651.3-Deodexed ROM (with latest radio + wimax) but could not get version 2_0_5-pre4 to work. It starts wifi tethering BUT my laptop cannot find /discover it.
Thanks.

Me too.. yes sir.. it no work
he is probably on cm6. you cant really compare the two roms since sprint has its hand in locking up a native feature of the device for profit. we probably need the kernel tweaked by one of the devs in order to get this working.
Yeah, my laptop cannot see it either.

Everyone with an Evo on Sprint is "signed up" for 4G. It may not be available where you are at, but you are paying for it and "signed up" for it.
i ended up purchasing pdanet for tethering. was only 18.95. to be honest this phone is great, but we all know the battery's shortcomings. im ok with killing 2 birds with one stone by tethering usb and charging the phone at the same time . Any solution is cheaper than sprint's recurring tethering charge.
Does pdanet allow tethering over 4g in a 2.2 rom? If so, what speeds are you getting?

Root Tethering issue

Hi all,
I am new here. At least to the posting and all that. I have been flashing and trying to learn more over the past couple months, and this site has been what has taught me all, so I decided to sign up.
I am running into an issue right now with tethering and I was kinda just wondering if it was normal or am I experiencing something different.
When I am connected via 4g and tethering to a laptop, I can surf just fine, and do other misc. things to get me by, but when I start to download anything, my download speeds are HORRIBLE.
I can run speedtests ALL over the country, and it will be anywhere from 4-6mbps with a 1-2mbps upload. But, when I am downloading ANYTHING, I will get max maybe 100KBps. I just wanted to know if there is a cap on it or something that I can bypass or is this just normal for the way it is.
I am running [KingsROM][Alliance ROM] [Version r6.2] [Sense 2.0] 2.1+3.0 with all updated radio, wimax, prl, ect ect.
Sorry if this is the wrong section or anything, like I said I am completely new to posting ANYWHERE on ANY forum... but this seems like a good place to start.
Thanks in advance!

freedom kernel wifi issue?

Is there a WiFi fix for the Aggressive Freedom(universal) kernel?
I seem to be unable to connect to wifi, in networks it just says "Error" under the WiFi option.
From what I've read in the kernel's thread, it's the undervolting itself that's the issue, seems to cause problems with radio reception overall. So presumably going to a kernel that undervolts less aggressively should fix that, or at least help.
If it's an issue not related to the undervolting, then it'll be up to Lithid to develop a fix. Or you could go and download the source and try your hand at kernel hacking
Alright, I attempted flashing the other 2, more, less, and I tried Golden Monkey, all three of those don't allow my phone to boot... Quite disappointing, lots of work goes behind kernels and I am in no way upset with the kernels, just my phone.
Ima try the freedom stock kernel and see how that goes, but is there any special method to flashing a kernel?
Nothing particularly special. I wipe Cache and Dalvik-cache before flashing a new kernel every time and that generally seems to work ok. With the earlier Freedom kernel versions on MikG I found that flashing the stock kernel, wiping cache/dalvik and then flashing the new kernel worked better than just flashing the new kernel over.
Yeah, IDK what i'm doing wrong but none of the kernels will work for me. The only one that worked was Freedom-Aggressive, but I had no WiFi and it kept going to 1x, so I just a nandroid restore and im gonna stick with whatever synergy is running as a kernel.
I unfortunately don't have any personal experience running Synergy so I can't really offer much advice there. I'm not sure if there's a minimum number of posts requirement, but you could try searching through the thread for the kernel on the Dev. forum, and possibly post in the thread if there's no useful search results.
Yeah I don't have enough posts yet to post in the dev forum, but I have scoured the dev section for synergy and haven't found anything yet.
I am having the same issue I haven't tried more or less but I have tried golden monkey, both aggressive freedom universal, and godmode. They all seem to break wifi and 4g on synergy rls1 with godmode, on my phone. I had some luck with the aggressive freedom godmode kernel however my superuser app, setcpu and benchmark app kept on force closing. Ever since then every time I reflash it, it always breaks wifi. I am somewhat new to all this and have spent days reading through posts and haven't found much of a solution. I would love to figure this out because with either aggressive kernal (godmode or universal) my phone is super fast. I am almost and I mean almost ready kiss wifi goodbye but I would like to find a solution. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it.
Yeah, I know what you mean. I would really like to find a fix for the issue or find someone who may have a way to fix it. IDK though, my evo won't flash any kernels with Synergy RLS1 + godmode. Got it to work once, but after I flashed to the back up since WiFi didn't work, my phone just gets stuck on the htc screen.
I'm just so new to all this, and work so many hours its real hard to spend any time figuring it out. I won't have much time this coming week to do much with testing but I will try and get as much info and kernels tested to find out which work best but so far the 3 I have tried wifi won't start and says error. Sux cuz my phone is so fast with aggressive freedom kernal

Knight,
I would suggest going to synergy rls 1 ( the regular version not godmode) it seems a lot of phones dont like god mode but run smooth as butter on rls 1.
I am running synergy rls 1 with golden monkey universal kernal. no problems with wifi. Cant test 4g as I am not in a 4g area.
Hope this helps
Thanks I will try that later on tonight.

Ok this is the best advice i have read so far.. i was having major issues flashing kernels.. when i could get them to work, wifi was not working and neither was 4g. So i flashed over to synergy +godmode, and it was so slow and sluggish with the stock kernel on my phone.. i tried freedom aggressive, golden monkey, netarchy, and while they all made my phone much more responsive and fast, i still had issues with 4g and wifi.. So today i found this, and flashed over to the regular synergy without godmode.. Already i can tell a huge difference with the stock kernel, it is very fast and responsive. I am flashing over Freedom aggressive to see if wifi and 4g work, crossing my fingers, if not i will then try golden monkey..
*******Update***********
OK merchmonster, you sir are awesome.. I can confirm wifi and 4g working with synergy rls 1 no godmode, and freedom aggressive universal.. Very awesome!!!!!!! If i could thank you a thousand more times i woud!!
I had to replace the freedom aggressive kernel due to my wifi stopped working a few days after flashing so I wanted to put the stock back on after flashing and during reeboot it gets stuck on the white htc evo 4g screen. I wiped dalvic and cache 3 time first. Any ideas?

[Q] Very Slow 3G Speeds, other fixes don't work

Let me first start by saying I am testing another Evo 4g as well as an Evo 3D at the same time next to each other. My phone gets around .3 everytime while the other phones receive .6-1.8 on avg. The Evo 3D is stock, unrooted and the other Evo 4G is running CM7 currently.
I was originally on CM7, then I tried 3G turbocharger script. Then I moved to MikG (currently running 3.1) and additionally tried ##3282# method, but it was already at all 0's when I first launched it on MikG.
I am looking to find out if anyone knows a specific area that I may have messed something up or some other way to fix this issue. It isn't fixed by AOSP/Sense, and the 3G turbocharger/##3282# method is not affecting my speeds.
Thanks in advance if anyone has any help to this. All I seem to find time and time again is the ##3282# method when I search, but my phone has had that as the default setting all along...
Welcome to Sprint, where unlimited 3g means you get dial-up speeds from 1998.
Does it say 1x or 3g?
i have had that problem before with the evo 4g it happens sometimes because sprint updates there PRL and Profile updates to connect too cell towers and with a lot of custom roms you cant update these things like on the official firmware. This causes loss of service in some areas and in some cases no service at all.
I live in a 4g area but when I get to a spot that it coverts to 3g I hate life....slow is a kind work for the speeds.....suck would be more appropriate
Yes, but like I was saying, the speeds on the phones next to me running custom CM7 and unrooted are both pulling in similar DL speeds that usually more than quadruple mine. I just can't figure out how to match theirs... I want to know what is different btwn our phones and where to find that information.
The only 2 options I see are trying to install the sprint based ROM and if that doesn't work, unroot my phone, try that, and next step would be to get them to trade it in...
I just hope there is a way I can change settings; it would save tons of time and effort.
Ok what is your current Dl speed? on the evo?
with that info i can probably find more ways to help you.
it ranges from .1-.4mbps on average. The other phones in the area achieve .6-1.8 or so... I spend a lot of time in the .27 range -sigh-
I am getting the new Ford Focus in a couple of weeks and I want to stream media to it while I drive, sooooo I would really like this resolved b4 my car arrives.
In that case i would reccomend,
flashing the evo back to stock sprint firmware and when you get done go to system update and update PRL and the Profile if that doesn't help let me know and we can try other options and if it does work you can put your custom firmware back on if you chose.
Updating the PRL and Profile in MikG doesn't work even though it looks the same and says it updated?
i actually just flashed a new rom today
it was the mikg kinged shooter 3d rom i was having problems myself so the best bet would go to stock because some features in mikg rom might not install those updates properly .
I will post back the results tonight or tomorrow when I get time. Thank you.
any time.
any questions feel free to ask
Last night i installed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1319881 and did the prl update and profile update. I nandroided back to MikG, and I don't think it helped. I will only know for sure on monday when I can test the other sprint phones next to mine.
At this point it is probably the hardware, right?

Force/increase 4G connectivity vs 3G, auto tethering when connected to power

I've got a two part question for some issues I'd like to address while on 4G (some I've called Sprint about, others I know you guys will have the answer since I'm rooted) that I hope to resolve.
My issues with Sprint is that if I'm on 3G and looking at images via websites, pics obviously load slower, but they're always nice and crisp. I notice that when I happen to be on 4G and go look at images, suddenly they load super grainy. I spoke to someone else who is also on Sprint w/ an LTE 4G phone (not a Note II, something else) who experiences the exact same problem. I've called Sprint about it, but I get the usual run around saying they're addressing the issues, fixing towers, etc. When I first started getting 4G in my area about 3 months ago, it was BLAZING fast, connected the second I came off the freeway and stayed on strong. I realize over time that I'm sharing the same signal with others, but damn.
My issues that I'm hoping you guys can assist with is in regards to the phone staying connected to to 4G more via changing thresholds. As I id before, it was awesome. Now it's gotten to the point where I or the phone have to be near a window, or occasionally I can leave it on the top edge of my couch...but if I happen to handle the phone to answer a text messages, it'll often drop back into 3G. The problem is that I use my phone tethered to my laptop for watching TV....Top Gear, Family Guy, etc that I stream. On 4G it's great, but once it drops to 3G it turns into a buffering nightmare and some shows/sites can't handle jumping around for time frames, so lets say if I'm 15 min into a show, go into 3G and come back into 4G, the show never recovers and I've got no choice but to restart the show. I'm just curious if there's a way to change at what point/signal strength that the phone wants to swap back and forth and basically ask it to stay on 4G more often than not when I'm at home where I actually get 4G.
As for tethering, I'm a stock rooted ROM using TrevEMod tethering because the stock tethering app won't stay turned on, I'm assuming due to using the stock ROM. What I'm curious about is a way to have the phone automated in that once I plug it on, the tethering app turns itself on and then back off again once unplugged from a power cord. At one point I'd used some app where it had me enter parameters to do this, but it only worked to turn on the stock tethering app which won't work.
Bottom line is I'd like my phone to stay connected to 4G more often than not, turn on tethering when plugged in and turn it off when not.
as for the tethering, if you are running the stock deodexed rom, there is a mod you can flash to make the native hotspot work then you will be able to use Tasker or however you automate it turning on. if you are running stock odexed you could always flash stock deodexed, if you were intent enough on making it work.
here is the hotspot mod: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2232553
I truly don't know if the stock ROM is odexed or deodexed, I just did a simple rooting procedure and nothing more so I could install a tethering app. Maybe I'm just being naive, but coming from my Epic days where I rooted, ROM'd, kernal'd, OC'd, etc days where I removed tons of apps, added others, etc I never was able to get battery stats/calibration to work correctly, which in turn wrecked havoc on that phone...phone would get super laggy, bog and stumble, then I'd reset the phone and I'd go from 20% battery life to 3%, then realize why the phone was freaking out. Now that I've got this Note II, it works great, I've never felt the need to OC or anything (I wouldn't mind removing stock apps but the SDX Stock App Removal Tool doesn't work), so I'm kinda hesitant in flashing any sort of ROM for fear of reliving past experiences...right now the phone simply works great, I'd just like a few simple features. Any input to sway my decision?
i hear ya, i too like a nice stable setup with everything working. your system is probably odexed if al you did was root, but if you have a file explorer app, when you go into /system/app, you will see each .apk also has an associated .odex file. the deodexed rom has the odex part added back into the apk, but otherwise is exactly the same, no tweaks or anything, every bit as stable, and with nothing removed, but it is easier to make mods for a deodexed rom, such as the hotspot mod!
the decision is yours. it is always a bit of work to flash a rom, but this is defintiely a way to keep the stabilty and reliability, and have the hotspot working the way you want it to! the rom is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2241930, if you choose to go this route. this is exactly my setup, with the hotspot mod, and it runs great.
I'll read the thread, thanks for the link. Any suggestions for something that will enable the tethering app automatically based on being plugged in, and I've had no luck finding anything in regards to people changing thresholds for the 4G connectivity.

no problem. the app Tasker from the market does things like that, i think it costs a few bucks but it's well worth it. and perhaps there are others.
for the 4G thing, i don't see any setting for that. there are other people who know a lot more about network stuff than i do. there might be a dialer code menu where you can set to receive LTE only, but sorry i can't be of more help there. good luck and have fun!

In HDR menu there is a LTE only mode..... beware you wont receive calls or texts so if you have google voice set up then perfect
