Screen flicker? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I guess flickering is the best way to describe it. On certain gradients and colors, the screen will flicker and have some distortion. Is this normal with the phone or is there an issue with the screen?

Turn down the screen brightness a bit

Even at low brightness it still kinda looks like this. I feel like there's something messed up with the screen...

Are you using a kernel with voodoo color support? If you are, that could be the culprit. I'd install the Voodoo color/sound app and try changing a few of the settings to see if that changes anything

I may have a similar issue on my Epic, though much worse... Check and see if you get the same effects in download mode or nandroid whatever...
My screen started with a blueish flicker and then got worse and worse over the past month, now the whole screen is covered by a translucent blue, I can barely make out whats going on behind it. Though the phone still functions, the display is trashed. Perhaps a loose connection or broken flex cable.

Have you checked your battery? My mom has this phone and had the same problem... I took her battery out and spun it on a table and you could see how warped and swollen it was. These batteries can warp and explode, causing damage to the phone and bodily harm. If your battery is misshapen, take it into Sprint- they will have to swap it out! I got my mom a new battery from them, and her screen is fine now- no flicker. Because it was intermittent (occurring seemingly at random), I was able to rule out being a screen problem. Her screen is fine, it was the battery.
I'm not saying the battery is definitely your problem here, but it is a known problem with the design of the battery/phone, and can cause a lot of damage if your battery IS bad and it is not replaced. Check your battery, it very well may resolve this issue you're having with screen flicker. Otherwise, I don't know

Thanks, I was wondering why my screen had random blotches of yellow flickering, so I swapped my battery, and voilĂ  it's gone. All I need to do now is replace both of them.

[Q] Anyone suffering Screen Flickering?

Twice in the last couple of weeks I have had the screen flicker when I turn it on, turning it off then back on again has sorted it out both times.
I am hoping it is either down to some CM autobrightness thing, or under/overclocking...or both.
Unless anyone thinks this is the start of my screen dying?
Any input would be great
what do you mean by flicker? a slight flicker of the backlight? and by slight, i mean realllyyy slight
Nah its a full on flicker as in you can't use the phone like it.
I know when the forums started some people, like 2, were saying when they set their brightness setting to the lowest setting it would flicker. I suppose they returned it.
my brothers phone is doing that right now
I've had mine flicker about 5 times in the last four days. The screen semi locks and jumps up and down a little in a juddery way. When i try to scroll it works hap hazardly. Turning the screen off and on sorts it out. Not sure why it does this but it only started at the start of this week.

Had this happen to me on a reboot today right as the cm logo was fixing to come up. It was only for a split second, like scribbled green flicker. It was after I updated to 6.1.1

Mine does it all the time when the screen auto dims.
That was right out of the box stock.
ok good to know I am not the only one, I will keep an eye on it but I do think it might be to do with autobrightness
Got a screen protector on? Maybe the thickness/quality of screen protector could be an factor?

Do the options in Cyanogen Settings,.. UI,.. Auto Backlight,.. Filter thing not sort anything for you?

I had the same thing happen and I just returned it from walmart and got a new one.
I can confirm that some phones do have a screen issue where the backlight flickers at certain brightnesses. Mine does it when at lower ones. Stock rom, etc, doesn't matter.
I also have battery issues (45 mins with screen on at 20% brightness will kill the battery).
I am having mine replaced today.
Replaced my phone, no more flicker, and it seems like the battery lasts twice as long now. Very happy so far

Screen Burn?

On the top of my screen I've noticed that the the status bar has been burnt in and I was wondering if I could get a replacement from T-Mobile.

Searched and found this. Wanted to bring this up because I too now have screen burns. Specifically the notification bar and a little bit from the dock. I just started noticing it maybe the past month or two. Not sure if it will get worse. But to describe it, it's a light blueish tint, more noticeable on white. Really noticeable when the brightness is turned down, hardly noticeable when the brightness is cranked up. I got my phone in the middle of April of 2012.
Kinda sucks, but I've gotten used to it and come to terms that it will probably happen again if I replace it. Never replaced a phone before, but I just don't want to end up getting a refurbished phone if that's the case. Phone works great and I can deal with the screen unless it becomes super dark blue.
Just wanting to know if any of yall have any indications of screen burn or at least heard any other stories. Thanks!
To all this happen to a previous vibrant I owned and its from you charging your phone often with the display on to high and not in sleep mode while charging make sure your screen is off on phone because the hotter the phone gets the more likely u get the burn

For those who have the issue, can you try the Display Tester app on the Play store and let us know if it works? Apparently, it can repair burn in... it would be good to find out if it's a possible fix in the event someone else were to get screen burn.

Are these defects?

So i'm having 2 issues
1) you can see in the 2 of the pictures there is an area of yellow discoloration. I had this problem back when I got an iphone 4 and returned it the next day. But because wirefly has such crap return policies I rather keep the phone if this really usually is a temporary thing while the "glue settles" as been reported in the past
2) I'm getting this heat error when I try to increase the brightness of my screen. Today is the first time I tried upping it beyond the normal 63% due to trying to check out this discoloration issue. Note I did have an otterbox on my phone at that time but I wasn't doing anything CPU / GPU intensive. It seems a little ridiculous that the heat would not let me raise the brightness just on normal use.
Wondering if anyone else is having the same type of issues

I got the heat issue one time... i've seen others say they got it as well. I don't normally have my brightness that high though and when I got the message it wasn't really very hot. It does heat up during games and stuff though.

I am having the same issue. I bought mine last night from Best Buy.
Thanks guys, i'll wait and hope a future firmware fixes the heat. It didn't feel that hot in hand. The yellowing looks better today.
I put mine on the charger 30 minutes ago and the discoloration was gone, but as I was using it you could see that it was returning..
Not having any of those issues. Just traded my GS3 last night for this and loving it. Was able to get the screen to the full 100%. I normally keep all my phones displays at 0%. I guess I have sensitive eyes. Unless in sunlight.
The screen not being able to go to 100% is not a defect. It has been discussed in a lot of reviews for the phone both att version and Sprint version. As far as the yellowing of the screen if it doesn't go away soon I would say it's a defect.
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda app-developers app
Thanks for the info Wally! I haven't seen those reviews, can you point me to them. So you would say not being able to go to 100% after just normal use is something that should be normal for a phone?
Speaking of defects, has anyone else noticed the color-banding issues on the display? Is there a way to re-calibrate the gamma on the display (As I'm sure that's the reason for the banding effect)?
Yep, I have the yellow screen at the bottom as well. Bought at best buy last night. Probably going to exchange it, but waiting to see if it goes away after some use.
Update::
I guess this is good news. The yellowing on the bottom of my screen has faded to almost half the amount it used to be. Its still not totally gone yet, but it does show promise. Perhaps this is the same issue that many iPad users had with the adhesive curing with heat and use.

I had this same issue yesterday i went back to sprint and traded it for another one completely gone now. So it's defiantly a defect, It was weird it took a while before it showed up. If you can get an exchange do that
Exchanged mine as well. The new screen is much better. Seems like its a bit hit or miss.

Hmm I'm going to go into a store and check out their display to see if they viewing angle on it are good because mine aren't that great.
Never had heat issue, and I always use 100% brightness. Never had screen discoloration either.

[Q] Anyone else experiencing AMOLED burn-in / Image retention?

Has anyone else experienced bad screen burn-in / image retention issues with their Note 2?
I've only had the phone just over 90 days, but I've already got some pretty severe burn-in. I use an app for equities trading several hours every day and after a few months of use, the icons and other parts of the app that remain static are plainly visible at all times on any screen that isn't completely black.
For now to slow it down I've re-themed the app and replaced as many static elements as I could with transparent .PNG files and no text.
Any idea if Samsung will replace the display under warranty for these types of issues? (From what I've been able to find, it sounds like they refused to cover it for the S3, then reversed their position and began covering it for some folks - curious what their policy is now)
Here's an example screenshot - this is a blank white screen. It's MUCH more noticeable in person.
Although I havent had it in my note 2 yet, my galaxy s2 had it. I went in to sprint and they swapped it for me because I had insurance. Didnt pay anything. Goodluck though.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk 2
I had it bad on my S2. The notification bar and active apps icons were visible on all white and blue screens and so was my keyboard. Sprint sent me home said they don't see that as an issue and the phone works fine so as long as it worked they don't care. Samsung on the other had took down notes then asked me to ship it to them. Never got to send though because the lady refused to be without a phone. As of now my Note 2 has been burning in the notification bar again after about a month of use. I think that's why they made the S4 notification bar the same as whatever ur background is.

Because the damage cannot be reversed, try inverting your screen colors to see if you can get the other pixels to burn in and equalize. I did about 5 minutes of Google research and saw that the blue pixels burn out the fastest, so trying a negative color should burn the rest of them. Inverting colors can be found in Settings --> Accessibility or (in CM10.1) Settings --> Advanced (under device) --> Screen (tab).

Thanks for the suggestion..
I'm giving that a try, but I imagine it'll be hard to even out ~3 months worth of 4-6+ hour a day usage..

Probably, but it is a fix. Your only other option is to let it continue burning out the pixels as before, without inverting the colors, in the hope that you may be able to RMA/warranty the thing. I guess AMOLED screens are known to have this issue. Call up Sprint or Samsung and see what they will do if the problem gets worse.

Apparently for Samsung's Amoled displays, "enough time" equals ~90 days of several hour a day usage.
I was aware that the display could suffer from burn-in/image retention, but I had no idea it would happen this badly and this quickly.

Green hue on all blacks appeared?

The screen on my note 3 suddenly showed a green hue color. I took some screen shots to show but after I pressed the power button(standby) to turn screen off then back on again the green hue disappeared?
So thinking the pictures would still prove the issue, no I was wrong the screen captures I took with the green hue are also fine . Not sure whats going on...Perhaps it is hardware related hence why it does not show in the captures. Basically all the blacks had a green hue to them / in fact were green .
Today is the 14th day for me to return or exchange the device at t mobile. Please advise. I did install some dark wallpaper apps but deleted them yesterday, was using normal stock wallpapers. I am not rooted.
Do you think it is hardware related? I believe if it was software related then the screen captures ( which I took when screen went green) would also show the green hue.
Had the same problem here but mine had a pink hue.Try to reset the colors. Just type *#0*# on your phone dialer and use the 3 colors for 5 minutes each, it will reset the pixels.
Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk
It went away when I pressed it on standby and back again.
What gets me concerned is that when I took a screen shot when it was green it didn't show on the picture after it remedied itself.

So have the problem gotten worse since then?
I have seen it now and then. Often happened when I was on the phone and closed and opened the lid.
Happened now that I opened the lid after attaching it to the charger.
Should I expect it to get worse, and therefore return it for a new one or will it be a rare bug now and then?
Reading mode enabled?

Hi,
I bought mine in October 4th 2013, has occurred twice so far. Taking screen shots does not show it. I am thinking it is a software glitch.
Reading mode was not enabled. All dark areas of screen goes green.

If you are doing a screen shot, it is reading the state from the device and saving it. So later if you look at that screen shot and it looks okay it most likely is not software. If you look at the screen shot while the unit is displaying the green look and it looks right, then you most likely have a software issue.
Sounds like a hardware issue or perhaps some weird mode being set by software. I still think it is hardware though.

I perhaps hoped that you had answered my question when I first posted as this occurrence first happened on the 14th day of my purchase, so I had a choice to return to T Mobile store for swap out. Either way, only occurred twice so far, so I am not worrying too much about it. Shelf life for phone for me is approx 12 months max, so all is good thus far. Pressing the standby button afaik cleared it up at the times it occured.
I too have had this happen twice now and months in between. Happened after mj5 update could that be a cause

Doubt it, as mine is stock N900T that has no updates as of yet.
The first time I rebooted and it went away. The second time it was only like that for a few seconds and cleared up on its own. I'm on the at&t version

Mines does this once every few days apart, if I just turn off the screen and turn it back on it goes away. I also took screen shoots but they show fine in the gallery. I only seen it once on my wife's note.
I have exactly the same problem, the green hue appear, and turning off the screen or dial *#0*# and select one of the color to test the screen can clear that away. it happens once per one or two weeks for me. I'm worried that may be a hardware issues and that is a symptom before the device fail. Does any of you have this happened then your phone became not working ?
btw, It's seems happens after I changed to a magnetic flip case ,not sure if that's related, will try not using that case and see if that will gone away. Are you guys having this problem also using a case with magnetic flip ?
