Our phones are getting old enough taht teh buttons will jam up and possibly stop working. My phone would pull up the reboot/shutdown menu and then reset itself, I believe that my button just got smashed in really hard.
Don't freak out, if you need to turn your screen "ON" there are a few ways.
1. Plugging in a USB cable or something into the headphone jack, should turn the screen on.
2. Install an APP that uses the proximity sensor to turn the screen on
3. Pulling the battery and reinserting it without the USB plugged in, should reboot your phone.
How to fix it.
1.One user has success, disassembling his phone and using a pair of pliers to squeeze the metal casing around the power button back into itself. If you attempt this, be very gentle and squeeze a little bit at a time until it works. I would still install a program to turn on the phone just in case the button fails again while you are out and about.
2. I had some success, disassembling the phone and pulling the white button part out of the metal casing and then using a pick tool or needle to bend the contacts up. I got it working and then lost the little white button in the carpet I guess, thing went flying somewhere.
3. One user on here had success taking it to a cell phone repair place and they charged him $40 to replace it. Who knows if they actually did replace it, they may have just unstuck it, worth a shot to talk to those guys and see what they say. Personally I'd rather just put the $40 towards the insurance deductible
OR
You can send it here for repair http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-epic-4g-touch-power-button-repair/
4. Replace it yourself. I consider myself decent at soldering, I would not attempt this personally..
5. Swap the main board. Buy a phone with a bad screen, swap the boards and sell the rest or keep for parts. MAKE sure the new board has a GOOD ESN or sprint will NOT let you swap/activate the phone, as the ESN is tied to the main board. Now when I buy a used phone, I'll ask the seller do you mind if I call sprint and check the ESN? They will tell you right away if it can be activated.
Keep in mind that your recovery menu might use the power button to select choices, so you really have to think about things before you do them. You don't want to be stuck in teh recovery menu because you can't pick any options. I had to flash AGATS's recovery for JB, which fortunately uses the home button to choose option, (volume to scroll). I had to use Odin to flash it from a computer as I needed to reflash my ROM and could not do it from the current recovery menu because it needed the power button.
If you need to capture screenshots, there are APPS for that, I use Ultimate Screenshot, it's a hokey compared to the built in option, but it works.
There are also APPS for booting into recovery and recovery options, Quick Boot is one of them.
List of APPS
1. Smart Screen ON, uses proximity sensor to turn on and off your screen, I believe this is a paid app.
2. Proximity Actions ."Dypraxxx" has had success with an app called "Proximity Actions". You can thank him "here"
3. Gravity Screen Off On Thanks to syed239
4. Screenshot Ultimate (this is just the first one I tried, I'm sure they are better one's)
5. Quick Boot : Lets you reboot into recovery, shutdown, reboot into bootloader or just simply reboot.
Feel free to add info to this thread, there's nothing worse than your phone breaking and not knowing what to do about it. Hopefully someone that gets into a similar situation can use this thread to get back up and running until they can get a new phone or what have you.
My power button gets jammed when it wants to. You should add proximity actions to the app list. Great list of fixes / workarounds

When I was using my E4GT, my power button messed up and I used Gravity Screen Off. Someone from the forums (if you're reading this, sorry I can't remember your name) recommended it to me and it really helped out a lot. There's a free version on the play store. I would give that a shot

Hey Guys,
My Power Button is not working anymore...
Therefore the only way for me to power off my phone is using the battery pull method, yes i know...that's just super ghetto.
Anyways, I was planning on opening my phone for a number of reasons, mainly curiosity and attempting to tighten my hinge which has become particularly loose over the past week.
I have consulted the guides in the forum on how to do this, so i am pretty much prepared to do so.
Is there something that I can specifically look for that is causing the power button to not be functional in my phone where I can go inside and perhaps adjust something and fix it.
ex. flex cable such as the one for the touch panel and led.
On a side note: My in-ear speaker seems to also have some problems, for it does not output sound as loud as it should. It is very faint, however the external speaker and the usage of headphones is fine.
Any Solutions?
Thanks in advance bros.
this isn't much help but, out of curiosity , how do you turn your phone on then if your power button doesn't work?
battery out and in lol...
the phone ends up booting up so, yeah.
the annoying part is that I want to install ROM's and stuff but without a functional power button I don't think I will be able to do that .
I am trying to look for some sort of location within the phone that is responsible for the function of the button which is connected to the digitizer/lcd.
Hopefully it is replaceable...
Your phone boots when you put in the battery, without you having to press the power button?
Sounds like you have some serious hardware issues. If your warranty is still in effect, you should send it for repair or replacement. If you open the phone and void the warranty, and you can't fix the problems, you're screwed.

The misunderstanding is that you failed to mention that your phone is plugged into the charger when doing the battery pull.
Open up your phone, fix the wire, reconstruct than test.
LOL man that's funny what happens when ur phone dies how do u get it back on.......do you think the rom ur using is causeing the problem and you also don't need power button to install new roms just click install from sd card in rom manager

Last night I updated to the latest ics update so I'm on 4.0.4. I've noticed it shuts off by itself occasionally. Even now at work, phone is laying flat and it shut off once. Also this morning driving to work phone was on my dash and it shut off. Both times phone was in sleep mode and I didn't know it shut off completely until I tried to turn screen on with volume keys or power button. I would then of course have to hold down power button to start phone up again. I haven't rooted or anything , I'm stock. I've tried tapping the back by the battery to see if something was loose but nothing happened.
Maybe some of you guys have experienced the same. Will this go away when I start rooting and romming ,or do I have defective hardware?
So no-one? So far I looked online and someone mentioned putting paper under battery to hold it tighter against contacts? I'm trying that but not sure if it's making battery hotter. I'll see if that works.
Also called Google just in case I have to go through the returning process which I hope not to go through this is what they emailed me for my issue.
" Greetings and salutations,
Thank you for contacting Google. It was my pleasure assisting you today. Many issues can be resolved by performing a hard reset by removing the battery or by factory data resetting your device, but first I'd like you to try removing the battery, wiping it clean with lint free cloth, as well as the prongs that connect to the battery itself. Try this a few times, if it does not work this should. Be sure to backup any personal files you may have on the device.
To factory data reset your device, touch the Settings icon from your ‘Home’ or ‘All Apps’ screen, then select ‘Backup & reset’ under ‘Personal.’
If you're unable to get to your Settings menu, follow the steps below:
1. Power down your device 2. Press and hold both volume keys and the power button to enter Bootloader mode 3. Press the volume keys to cycle to the Recovery mode option 4. Press the power button to select Recovery mode 5. From the Recovery mode screen, press and hold the Power button then press the Volume up button. 6. Use the volume buttons to select wipe data/factory reset. 7. Select Yes -- delete all user data. 8. The factory data reset process will now start. Once its finished, select 'Reboot system now.
If for any reason you need to contact us again, please feel free to reply directly to this email or visit our help center at

I better root and try a Rom asap huh?
I'd say get a replacement for it while you still can.
yeah getting a replacement could be the wisest thing to do
altho if when you received it in 4.0.1 it wasnt randomly shutting then something might've gone wrong with the update so you can unlock your bootloader and flash some ROMs to see how that goes
I definitely want to try some roms before I replace it as I have some time under Samsung's waranty. I also want to gently pull the contacts out a bit with small pliers to see if it holds the battery better. I'll even clean the contacts.
Man I'm hoping it's software ...

Gently pull the contacts out? Wouldn't that void your warranty? I'd be careful with the hardware if I were you.
Unless your battery contacts on the phone are smashed/deformed, it is unlikely that the battery connection is being physical broken at the contacts. The battery fits fairly snug in the compartment and the contacts stay touching even when the battery is partially removed. Probably no benefit to placing a piece of paper in there. Also keep in mind your NFC is in the battery.
I am also using a "Yakju" device from Google Play. No similar issue on 4.0.4 stock or CM9. At least not this nightly build : )
I actually got the GSM nexus yesterday and I had the exact same problem. The phone powered itself off twice. Once right after I turned it on and again about two hours later. Both times it occurred when I was moving around with the phone.
I pulled the battery and popped it back in a few times and it hasn't happened since.

You guys are probably right. The battery does already feel snug in there.
As I'm reading through forums for my issue, I can't believe how many sgn users are experiencing the same thing I am, some even reboots. Alot of them think it's apps. Good chance I'll exchange for the another device with same issue. I'm starting to wonder if this is why Google dropped the price.
Can't wait to get home and mess with this more. Hopefully I can make it go away.
I had this same problem when I first got mine with random reboots an powering off by itself, after about 2 weeks the problem went away, don't ask me how it seem to magically go away by itself maybe because battery needed time to settle in with the charging process.

I'm happy to report, knock on wood, that after I factory reset the phone the problem seems to have gone away. Last night I used the toolkit to unlock bootloader and root, and I flashed cm9 nightly and all is good so far. My only problem now is I dont know which rom to try next
I definitely want something with led customizations like cm9 has, thats just so old school reminds me of a blackberry .
Any suggestions, I guess I can also ask elsewhere.

I had light flow going when my phone would shut itself off. It doesnt include alot of the apps I use to customize so I'm not the biggest fan of it now. I think the cm9 led customizations is sufficient as it lets you add any of your apps regardless.
Aokp has more features and is most popular so you could try that. Then try paradigm rom. I done use light flow, I just have a few led colors from stock and its enough for me for now. Google voice green, handcent texts blue, and Gmail and calls white. All from the stock apps.
Black ice is good so far. So many different variations of aokp roms I guess, its hard to recommend the "best" one.
I'm on Liquid Smooth v2.1, Android 4.2.2. No custom kernel, just whatever it comes with. Been running fine for months.
This morning I dropped my phone in my car (a few inches drop) and it went into a bootloop. It eventually booted into Android and I backed up all my apps and texts to my SD card. But afterwards it went into another bootloop and now its stuck there. It will start booting, and then restart (most of the time before the boot animation even comes up). I need to get into recovery so I can restore an older Nandroid or maybe try wiping the cache. I have tried using power/volumeup/home, but it bootloops by the time recovery is starting up. ADB on my computer will not pick up the phone. Sometimes for a few seconds it will show up, but it has an "offline" next to it and by the time I enter "adb reboot recovery" it says no device found.
If I take out the battery for 30 seconds, it makes it pretty far into the boot.
What steps should I take next? I know ODIN is last resort, but I'd prefer not to go there. Thanks guys.
I have a similar problem I think the power button may be the issue, when it's boring up tap on the power button with your bail as you would on a table. Also try to put your sideways with power button down that may help.

I was able to get it to boot for a few seconds, and the power menu kept on coming up until it died. Does the phone turn off if you hold down the power button for a long time? Seems like I gotta get that fixed. I'll try the sideways suggestion in a bit.
Yeah, if you hold power and never let go, it'll reboot over and over. It's intentionally like that so if you ever have the system lock up you can still do a kind of hard reset. (Better than a battery pull, though that can still be necessary if you want it to just turn off)

That's what I thought. Anyone know the difficulty of repairing this myself? Or a cost estimate? Holding the button at an angle seems to make it work for a bit. Sideways didn't help.

Anyone know if I were to remove the power button completely, would the phone work without it? I don't really need it, and removing it would make the phone usable. Just wanna make sure the phone doesn't run a check or something. I'll order a new power button in the spare time and install it later.

it'll prolly work but if phone shuts off not sure if you will be able to turn it back on without a power button, what I did for the time being is get the phone of and basically tap on the side of the phone with the power button towards the floor kind of like trying to get gravity to push the power swith inside to be back to the normal position. Then don't touch the power button, there are apps in the play store that can function as your power button.

Yeah, I watched a YouTube video and he fixed it like that. So I basically hammered the button as hard as I could with my nail for a minute straight and now it doesn't bother me anymore until you press it. I can live without the power button, but I'm probably going to have to remove/replace it since I can't risk bumping into the button on accident. Thanks for the help though!
Does anyone know of a method to turn the phone on without the power button? I know on my Nexus One you could Insert the battery while it was charging to force a reboot.
Afaik you'll just have to restart every time till it's fixed.

My wife's s3 shut itself down a few days ago and now it's stuck in a boot loop. It was on rooted stock 4.1.
It will not fully boot into the system, trying to get into recovery will barely let you see the recovery screen before it cuts off, and getting into download mode will turn off after about 20 sec.
I'd love to be able to savage some things from the device, but I'm lost as to what I could try now.

Sounds like a faulty/stuck power button. A common thing these days. Open the device and play with the switch a little. Ive seen several people say this fixed it temporarily. Doesn't work for everyone though. If it is the button, the only permanent fix is to replace the part. Only a few bucks online and I dont believe its too difficult to do.
Thanks for trying to help. Unfortunately it didn't help me. Took it apart, physical button actuates fine, switch underneath seems to click and return ok. Blew compressed air to be sure nothing's making it stick, button and switch. When I got it back together, except for actually having recovery load up for a few sec (once), it is behaving the same way.
Seeing as I have no soldering experience or equipment and we have already got my wife another device, I may just call it dead.
Thanks again for the help.

Sorry I cant be of better help for that. If you want to do a quick test though, just so you know for sure....
Take out the battery, then put it back in and wait a few moments. If it turns on by itself, its almost definitely a power switch gone bad.

Hoping you all can help. My kid stepped on the back of my wife's phone (her fault for having it on the floor if you ask me...) and it caused a pressure crack across the back glass but left the front screen untouched. However, when we turn it on you hear the little touch sounds it makes but the screen only slowly flashes to a solid white and then slowly fades. So the digitizer seems to work just fine but the LCD does not(?) As stated, the phone responds to touch, makes notification sounds when called/texted/emailed, etc... However the screen will not come back on.
** I've attached a (admittedly bad quality) picture of the solid white screen in case that helps for some unknown reason... **
I am fairly certain I can order a new LCD and replace it for a quite low price, however it looks like a lot more trouble than its worth and she has a replacement phone already. My question is I'd like to sell this phone to a couple vendors I've found on Craigslist that are interested, but I need to be able to wipe it completely (she doesn't have any nudy pics, however there is some sensitive financial info in the emails and texts that can probably be accessed on the phone, although she can probably just change her gmail password to block them from accessing here email, but I'm not sure what may be cached on the phone.)
Its never been rooted, but I wasn't sure if there was an all USB way (adb shell maybe?) I can use to at least wipe this phone or some other alternate method of getting the screen info viewed so I can perform a wipe? If there is a solution I could implement today, that would be ideal.
Thanks, and let me know if you need any additional info!

If you can get into fastboot then you should be able to wipe the phone. I know the G has internal storage but there should be a command to wipe that as well.
Do a search for "ADB factory reset."
To get into fastboot or download mode requires only volume and power key presses but I am unsure at the moment which does which.
I know that when powered off, the button combo to get to the screen where you want to pick where to boot to is volume up and power. And then for me it is two clicks down to recovery. Don't know how many it is for boot loader though.
