Hey so I was just wondering what everyone thinks the best CPU tweaking app is, and what you believe the optimal settings (such as speed, governor, and scheduler) are.
It's been a couple years since I've used an android device, but I've previously used SetCPU. Is that still the 'king' of CPU management or has some other app emerged?
In a nutshell, post your ROM/Kernel, favorite CPU tweaking app, favorite settings, and why you chose them.
Here's mine:
ROM: Stock
Kernel: Stock
App: SetCPU
Settings: 1512 MAX, 1026 MIN, ONDEMAND/CFQ
Why: Don't know any better options
Let's see what we can find out!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
ROM: PA
Kernel: Faux
App: Fauxclock (trickster mod is a free one that works really really well)
Settings: 1512 Max, 160 Min, Intellidemand/Fiops
Why: PA so I can customize and faux cause I used his kernel for S3 and it gave me awesome battery life, and N7 is no exception to that! I went 1 day with 3 hour screen usage and only lost 35%.
ROM: ParanoidAndroid
Kernel: ElementalX
App: ElementalX uses Aroma installer to customize features
Settings: 1728 MAX, 1026 MIN, ONDEMAND I think
Why: Not sure what you expect me to say. These were the settings I used on my Nexus 7 before I returned it and ordered a new one from BestBuy. I plan on using the same setup when I get my new one.
..
These are my settings memory settings below
Carbon night lies
Faux aosp ultimate kernel
Zram disk size 200
Zram on
Clear VFA on
Auto vfs on
Swapiness 100℅
Vfs pressure 100%
Dirty ration 20%
Dirty background 5%

Kernel Tuner is a nice app for adjusting everything on your tablet. It allows you to adjust each core individually, or link them all together! I used SetCPU as my primary CPU tweaking tool for years, I guess since I first started flashing kernels on my OG Evo (Evo 4G, Wimax), but find Kernel Tuner to be much better!! Adjusting each core individually isn't something that SetCPU allows you to do, plus there are many other features in Kernel Tuner that aren't available in SetCPU. Ever since someone referred me to Kernel Tuner a while back, it's been my go-to CPU tool!! Anyone who hasn't used it before should DEFINITELY check it out, I think you'll like what you find in the app!!
SwiftKey'ed from my '13 Nexus 7 FHD using XDA Premium HD
im on elementalX 1.4 using trickster mod donate version, overclock at 1.8ghz but i under clock and undervolt with trickster app
if u don't play games, don't bother o/c, underlock to like 1.1ghz and improve battery life! i think 1.1 adds at least 1 hr SOT
Stock kernel isn't real customizable at all. You need a custom kernel. I recommend faux but everyone will say the one they use is the best so flash around use one for a couple days and move on until you find the one you like.

As far as I know, Faux plus the faux app are the only way to get the screen color balanced.
worth the price of admission right there.
And definitely turn your minimum clock down to the lowest it can be - idling at 1 ghz as you do at default is pretty pointless.
Add greenify and better battery stats to the mix to address apps that keep your device awake for no good reason, too.

"Faux123 Kernel Enhancement Pro" aka faux clock includes color tuning. Second or third to last page of the tunables in that app.

Recently i've ventured into kernel threads wondering how i can get better battery life on my G2. I consider myself pretty well versed in roms but Kernels are a whole new animal for me.
I have read so many threads im becoming dizzy. If i have to flash a kernel for better battery, which one? I dont have demands for a faster phone. Most of the threads about kernels i have read are all about getting a faster clock. Im fine with the speed of my G2. I just want better battery.
Can some one provide me with some literature on the subject, point me in the right direction, or even better, answer some questions for a noob in this particular subject??
What Kernel to use?
Can i flash over CM 6.1 Stable?
Do i need to wipe before flash?
Any assistance will surely allow me to sleep better at night.
Thank you in advance.
I can tell you im running virtuous 7.2 i find pershoots kernel the best for battery.

If you want great battery life, don't use a sense rom. They're battery hogs as it is. Stay on CM 6.1 and flash pershoots latest kernel. Get setcpu and set a profile to 245/245 when the screen is off.
With these settings I get awesome battery life and I'm overclocked to 1497.

Oh ya i learned through trial and error to stay away from sense roms.
Can i ask you why you overclock? I dont find myself in any moments where i think the phone should be going faster.
I can flash pershoots over cm with no problems?
Can i get a link?
thanks for the response.
Well i lpike sense but only when its ocd sense too sluggish on stock g2 speeds. Also even with ocing and runing sense my bat last just about all day. It sometimes needs a shot a juice if im useing gps or playing a lot of games but thats it.

Decent battery life on my G2.
I'm running htc sence on mine with the pershoot kernal and cpu tuner.I have tweaked profiles and my battery life is better than b4.Example, i took it off the charger(ac) yesterday morning @ about 9:20am & today Thur, i checked the [email protected] 11:50am and my battery is only @ 40%.(1 day,3hrs & 31min's later)not bad. That's WITH moderate use.

So whats CPU Tuner? Do you have some suggestions for how to tweak the profile? Can i get a link to the pershoots thread? Is this the right thread? --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=847672
Do I have to wipe before flashing and then reinstall cm over it?
When I went into SetCPU, it always kinda confused me. That could be why I was never interested in overclocking.
I realize I have a lot of questions. Im just a careful and thorough person.
Simple.
@dangabob13...Don't worry about all the questions i'd want to b super carefull as well.First, cpu tuner is a free app in the market much like set cpu except u get more options as far as customizing your profiles.Second you can find the pershoot kernel right with in rom manager.Just go to the download rom section & its the 3rd one down.I didn't wipe and i haven't had any problems. The reason i switched to the pershoot kernel was because i was having problems waking up the screen with HTC sense and the kernel it came with. This fixed the issue for me.No need to b confused it's actually pretty simple. My profiles for cpu tuner are as follows:
Under the "Current" tab: i have the governor set to "conservative" i have the cpu o.c to 1094 MHZ.No need to go crazy over clocking i find this to b fast enough for now. The rest of my profiles:under the "profiles"tab,
Performance:Ondemand-Max:1094 Ghz,Min:768Mhz.
Good:Conservative-Max:1094Ghz,Min:768Mhz.
Normal:Conservative-Max:1094Ghz,Min:768Mhz.
Power save:Conservative-Max:1094mhz,Min:768Mhz.
Screen off:Conservative-Max:768Mhz,Min:768Mhz.
Extreme Power save:Conservative-Max:768Mhz,Min:768Mhz.
Keep in mind i also have wifi, blutooth, sync all disabled as well.I'm not saying this is guaranteed to work for you, I'm simply stating what works for me. Good luck i hope this helps.
Quick question....doesn't CM6.1 Stable have the pershoot kernel already? Also does the Pershoot kernel the one that goes to 1.8Mhz?
Not that I'm interested in going that high, but just wondering.
I OC for games mainly, but also to watch tv and movies, the extra umph really helps. My setup on SetCPU are:
Temp>40.2*C 368 / 245 Powersave Priority 100
Screen Off 245 / 245 Powersave Priority 90
Charging/full 1497 / 245 Interactive Priority 85
Battery<10% 268 / 245 Conservative Priority 80
Battery<30% 806 / 245 Conservative Priority 70
Hope this helps.

I dont have a conservative option under the Governor dropdown. is that important. Otherwise i duplicated your settings. Boasting 27 hours of up time and 40% left is bound to make me jealous ill test it out. Thanks again.
That's strange is your cpu tuner app up to date? I also wanted to mention that my screen brightness is set to 20%,heptic feed back is turned off and so is vibration. Along with a few other battery saving options you should see a difference in battery life.Obviously results will vary.

Ha its so funny. I have the same exact settings. i took a look around and turned off all that stuff. I keep my GPS on because it only uses battery when its being used. But i turn off wireless locations so that its not always trying to centralize my location.
Hello
Does anybody use set cpu with HTC Desire ?
I would like to know wich settings work the best for you. I am trying to get the best compromise between battery life and performance.
Thanks
128MHz - 998MHz ondemand. I get more than enough life out of it. I found that if your using AOSP and not really doing much on it like just texting or calling people, capping the max to about 600MHz or 500MHz if you want, works a dream and you get even longer out of it.
Smartass is better or worse ?
I do not see any real difference between smartass and interactive in term of battery live and performance.
On demand seems to drain slightly faster than smartass.
I set my Desire to 384-1136 with interactive govenor.
I charge it once i a day each time before I go to bed anyways (sleeping time usually23.00 - 05.00), so further battery saving is not necessary to me
Edit...my normal usages are:
Syncs (no auto sync by opening):
Friendstream 4 hrs
News 4 hrs
Weather 6 Hrs
push Yahoomail
push Googlemail
push Whatsapp
push EBuddy
Active background :
Lookout antivirus
No app killer used
Phone calls : about 1-2 hrs each day
Music listening mit DSP add-on : 4 hours
Fruit ninja (man! this is addictive!) : 1 hrs
Browsing (Dolphin HD + Android market) : 2 hrs
welll....every time I charge my battery it is about 15-25% left till out of juice...if I use my phone more than those, I have to charge it earlier (more than once a day)
245 - 985 MHz Conservative give mere 36 hours power and running smooth.

For me the battery has never lasted more than a day... Even on my un-rooted one...
BTW: Battery live depends on many things
1. Your ROM and kernel
2. Your runnning application, syncs, etc.
3. your usage and settings such as cpu freq, display brightnes, airplane mode, etc.
4. Received signal quality.
5. The condition of the battery...is it top fit for example?
It is difficult to measure the battery live.
@atuladhikari : battery live has nothing to do with rooting..

I don't like using any of the other governors since I get lag. I hate lag. OnDemand gets rid of the lag for me. I've had it before where I was using smartass and it took ~30 seconds for my screen to turn back on from idle. I wasn't too impressed.
setcpu
thanks meaple for your advice
i think that set cpu is fine on "ondemand" for some roms and for others roms no
set cpu is included on oxygen settings and running well
Cool, I need to download Setcpu
128-998 ondemand
screen off 128-384 ondemand
in call 128-384 ondemand
I get very good battery and performance with theses settings.

DidI do that?....I did.... LOL.
I used to use set cpu
set a profile like
Smartass
on charge - 1113mhz
80% - 100% - 998mhz
59% - 79% - 600mhz
35% - 58% - 500mhz
Screen Off - 300mhz
Priority was higher for lower battery %
BUT I stopped using it because of the little bugs, like when it changes to 384mhz for no reason after unlocking screen
It also affects the standard script with the rom you install, so you can never uninstall it properlu, you have to do a full wipe install and never install it, until I did that my phone was always a little laggy
I prefer my phone without it Each to their own
@shankly1985 - you didn't noticed wakeup lag with 128 MHz?
I must use 245 - x MHz to properly and fast unlock my phone.
Best Setcpu config for Desire is - no Setcpu at all.

Not at all mate, I get zero lag on my phone. when I check the info on the setcpu app and time in state 128 is at 85% so my phone is using very little cpu.
What do you guys overclock your processor to on this phone? Back on my Galaxy S 4G I used SetCPU, so if that works on this phone too, what do you guys set it to, and why?
Cheers!
I think System Tuner is more popular now than SetCPU. I keep mine at 1.02Ghz to save battery life. If I really need major processing power I turn it up to 1.72Ghz using the Trinity Kernel.
With the new Trinity Kernel for the GS3 rooted running ICS UVALH2 I see Quadrant scores of 5800 and AnTuTu scores of 7800 - 8000.
Don't forget you need a custom kernel to overclock.
I set mine to 11.

I found overclocking the GPU helps a lot more. There is a kernel for jellybean rom (a.k.a. CM10) and may work for ICS and the GPU overclock helps a lot. Use built in CM over clocker @ 1.5 GHz and GPU @ <400 MHz or whatever speed the kernel builder put it at. The original GPU clock speed was around 350 MHz or something so that is a substantial boost in terms of speed. Other then some heating when playing games no problems and perfectly stable. Battery doesn't seem to drop a bit maybe 1 or 2% faster.

Hi i have ARHD on my phone with the XM Kernel. I was slightly suprised in the Trickster MOD app, the max clock speed is 1.3ghz. Yes i know i can OC to 1.5 but im not sure what is setting this. When i had ARHD installed with stock kernel it was showing 1.3 as default. I assume that was set by the ROM. But i installed this kernel and still has 1.3 as the default.
Also the default govenor settings for the gaming one has the boost_freq set at 1300000, which is 1.3ghz, that can be changed to 1.5 also. But surely the boost freq would be the max freq no matter if you move the slider to 1.5 in the basic controls? But i would be suprised that the gaming govenor would underclock the cpu, surely for gaming you would want the phone maxed out?
Is this expected with the XM Kernel and the ARHD? And if so, is there any things i can change in the govenor settings to make sure it performs at absolute max?
It's kernel related; Xmisters' kernels since 188 have a hard cap(1.3Ghz) by default, but using trickster mod, or another o/c apk, you can raise it to the stock 1.5Ghz(tick 'set on boot' to ensure it stays at 1.5) The best settings are trial and error, tbh, I use touchdemand/sio though smartmax seems to be the best balance.
Thanks for the answer. i can change it to 1.5 easy enough, but if you look in the govenor control, the boost_freq is is set to 1300000. If i left it at that, would it prevent the cpu from going up to 1.5?

you have sleep (lowest CPU can go), ideal freq(the speed the CPU aims for while awake), touch poke (when you touch the screen), boost (what it boosts too to prevent lag) and max (CPU flat out)
Setting the boost to 1.3 will still allow the could to run at full speed.
