will we get Ubuntu? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

it's been pretty silent lately when in comes to Ubuntu phone for android. but I remember hearing about Ubuntu phone for Android supposedly being released late in the year, so my question is, does anyone think that out i747s will get Ubuntu phone for android?

We can get it if someone ports it, which they have, it's probably unofficial, but they need to stomp out those bugs!
And I don't think there's much interest for ubuntu on this phone. But everyone should come and prove me wrong.

Is it possible to boot something like Ubuntu?

Can't you just take any old version ubuntu arm edition build, put
an android kernel in and boot it? Drivers are built into the kernel right? Other than there being no way to receive calls and texts unless, it don't see why it wouldn't work. You could probably make programs that allow you to send and receive calls.

Google this topic. Also I think there is an app in the market that will help.

The devs are working on it. They are under no obligation to develop for us and expect nothing in return. So either do something about it or shut up.
They're working hard for us so that the epic can live up to its name.
That'd Ubuntu inside a chroot jail, and it's so old it won't even update.

Yes i believe only HTC does that feature but.
IMHO, its not worth it because they don't properly shut off and start to lose battery life. My mother's EVO will say its been running for 118 Hrs but yet she only has the stock battery and it drains crazy even with Juice Defender. And when you shut it off it takes only 1 second and usually anywhere from 2 to 8 seconds to boot.
Ill take Cm7 and have my Boot-ani disabled so it boots fast enough.

[Q] Dual Booting

I've been thinking a lot about putting Linux on my E4GT, which I know can and has been done, but I don't want to have my phone running Linux only. I'd like to be able to dual boot AOKP and Ubuntu or whatever is available. I haven't heard much about dual booting the E4GT and I'm not sure it's even possible. Can someone help me out here? Thanks a lot guys.

good question op, i was just thinking of doing this myself... the complete linux install app makes it stupid easy, which was somewhat of a disappointment as i was expecting a project! not a bad thing though.. i would recommend going that route
So I've got Ubuntu 12 up and running and it's pretty good. I don't like how I have to connect through a VNC client because it makes the GUI harder to user, but I understand that its the easiest way.
Does anyone know if you can run a working Linux system in place of the Android OS? No dual boot, just Linux only.

It would be an App for any phone I think. Sounds like it would be kinda cool- maybe.
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-205_162...g-system-turns-android-phones-into-computers/
these devices nowadays are worth more than netbooks and laptops on sale, might as well turn some of those files in there into a full operating system PC when cradled, they should design a processor that could do this with out any kind of lag or restrictions. Just buy a Monitor with USb ports ect and a built in burner player boom done.
look here at this video looks smooth sailing to me. anyone tried it yet?

Both of Canonical's new Ubuntu offerings look awesome. I wonder when Ubuntu for Android will be available - it looks like it would install as an app or add-on to the Android base OS somehow (maybe have to be cooked into a ROM?) whereas the Ubuntu Phone would be its own OS entirely. I'd like to try the Ubuntu Phone, but I have a feeling I couldn't fully part from Android and Ubuntu for Android would be ideal. Does the SGS2 E4GT have the necessary hardware (HDMI, USB host, simultaneous BT devices, etc.) support?

This makes the seeming lack of USB host capabilities that much more annoying.
Can't wait!
Yeah, count me as another person waiting on the edge of their seat for this. For me, this is a glimpse of the future. I'm hoping that within the next ten years, most people's primary computer will be their phone. The form factor may just be a simple matter of plug-and-go. If you want a laptop? Just dock the phone with a laptop body which has a hinged keyboard/display and additional battery. Want a desktop? Just dock it with a desktop body which has A/C power, secondary (high powered) graphics card, and other expansion ports. Need to be portable? Just undock and go. All your files, apps, etc... will be right there with you. Dreaming? Maybe. Ubuntu on Android (not the same as Ubuntu OS as the phone's primary OS) is essentially a rough form of this concept. I just hope Apple doesn't beat Linux to the punch. (Is there an Android fanboy smilie? If so, insert it here)

I don't think we will get a port on the e4gt. All of our legendary developers have adopted new phones. We have a few developers carrying on already created ROMs. But I believe this is the beginning of the end for major development for the e4gt.

I think if the differences between the Nexus 4 and the Optimus G were really as minimal as they seem than it wouldn't have been such a nightmare for the devs to bring AOSP to this phone in the first place. Still, I'm being optimistic.

Good point. And at some point the software upgrades will outgrow our hardware. I'm content with all of the development and roms that we have. It will be a while before the hardware on this phone gets outgrown. That's one of the reasons I originally bought this phone instead of the S3 when it was released....because I knew THAT phone's hardware would eventually be outgrown by software updates. But I know as long as the Nexus 4 is able to handle software upgrades, we will too. And we all know the Nexus devices are first in line with the software upgrades.

I'm brand new to the whole development aspect of Android and have never really peaked at the code so please excuse my ignorance on the topic, but why is GSM to CDMA so hard?
I would think the OS would be built in a way that it utilizes drivers/modules to offload a lot of that dirty work. So it would be something like:
(quick pseudo code so don't get nitpicky.. just trying to get the idea across)
Code:
network = new NetworkDriver('LGOG_CDMA'); //swap out CDMA for GSM drivers, etc..
network.init();
network.sendPacket(your_data_stuff);
and then it would be a matter of then at least trying and hacking the drivers from 4.2, assuming system calls don't change drastically with every minor release wouldn't this work?

I can't speak on specifics, but we had a N4 Conversion Rom for 4.2.2 and it quickly became known to brick certain phones. It was discouraged to use it.
Well my camera works with 4.3 so if we get someone on the port we would have a top tier phone with the latest and greatest Google flavoring ....

Do you guys think there would be a Windows 8.1 rom for nexus 7(2013)

Yeah so wouldn't it be cool if we ran windows 8.1 on our nexus devices? The roms around are just different forms of the same android with a tweak here, one there, a speed boost over there and a better benchmark score way over there. Great with the highest benchmark I'm sure to live ten years longer. Is this something you guys would want? I certainty can't do it. So anyone working on such a thing? Is it even possible? I heard something about Microsoft approving something like that or something.

Microsoft's software is closed source - the reason you see lots of Android development is because anyone can download the source code and make edits. To get Win 8.1 on the Nexus 7 (I'm assuming you mean the RT version), Google would have to pay Microsoft the licensing fee which most likely they won't do.
Yeah i know but even RT would be fine. And I don't mean official windows and Google making a deal, I mean some XDA developer coming through. Well I guess no then. Thank you. Im not a total noob, I just like asking noob questions once in awhile for noobs sake
