CWM compressed backup - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Do compressed cwm backup has any effect? I recently made a cwm backup with compression enabled to medium..before that i did cwm backup earlier also without any compression enabled..backup was ~3.2gigs..
But with my recently backup made with compression enabled, backup was~2.1gigs..
If there's no problem to compress the backup in recovery then why its not done by default?

There isn't any problem to compress the data the only disadvantage is its slow and time consuming both in making a backup and recovering from the backup.

Simply copy it to extSdcard/clockworkmod/backup with the help of any file manager.
& then delete backup from Internal storage.
Whenever you want ,simply restore it from recovery/backup&restore/restore from Sdcard1.
OR
You should move it to your PC storage(if you have) for extra care.
Hopefully this helps.

The problem with a compressed backup is that I cant restore it via Nandroid Manager app. Even after decompressing it. I know this thread is pretty old but have you found any more info on this topic?

The backups will appear in the clockworkmod folder on your SD card. You can restore them easily with CWM so it's a good way to do backups.
the backup is sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/your backup files .it was created by time.

Nand backup--- file size?

I got a Stock rom MA7, rooted w/ CWM GN2.
I did a Nand Backup to install a rom, before I installed the ROM I went to check the file size and it read 12.31 MB.
My question is, is this normal?, I reinstalled the stock rom twice and that's a 1.3 GB file, so I can't believe that a nand backup was so small in size.
I asked my buddy to do a backup on his AT&T version, and his was 17 MB file, how can a backup file be so small.

Check to see if you are backing up the whole rom and not just data or cache or something.

Sorry either you aren't checking the right files or your backup isn't selecting everything. I use TWRP but doesn't matter my Nands are usually about 4GB (but keep in mind I have a LOT of apps installed.) Most fresh installs would be similar to your installer .zip so around 1-1.5GB for nands minimum (unless you are using compression but you'll still only drop 20% or so file size.)

I figured I should be getting at least a gig, I've never really used TWRP, I like CWM so I stuck with that. Could either recovery make the phone not do a full nand bu?
Cwm also uses a blog file. It splits the backup up into two different folders. Check for a blog folder. This is where tje majority of the backup exists.

I can't find a blog folder, but there is a "blobs" folder with 100's of small folders in it.
Should I change my Recovery to TWRP?
Blob is what he meant. Probably autocorrected

What does everyone usually do when updating / changing ROMS?

I'm not sure how to backup everything like my apps and data. My internal storage is backed up already, but will changing ROMS even clear that? Just want to have an idea of what to do every time I update or try a new ROM. Thanks in advance !
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
Usually, before I flash a new ROM, I:
1. Make a backup of the current ROM via ROM Manager.
2. Backup all my apps (that are non-system apps) and app data using Titanium Backup.
3. Make sure all my SMS's are backuped in SMS Backup+.
Generally, flashing a ROM doesn't affect the internal/external storage. I know that it doesn't affect the SD card for sure 99.9% of the time.
So the internal backup / external doesn't clear even if a wipe is done thru the recovery? Thanks for the steps by the way, its a good reference, will for sure keep this!

I have it in both root of SD and the "0" folder. EFS_BACKUPS if done in TWRP. If you did it with FreeGee then in root freegee.

The root folder efs? I believe it is different from Samsung. Searching for mk9efs from system root led me here - /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/ . Searching for efs from the system root doesn't supply much, the location I just posted and a few other folders like efs-bridge. Now I may be wrong on this, @engine95 knows more than I, but I am under the impression that our efs are on 3 separate partitions and may not be accessible from a root file explorer. I don't think we have a root efs "folder". Again, I am NOT 100% on this and could be completely wrong.......

I'm not quite sure what he's asking.
The EFS backup with TWRP creates an "EFS folder with 3 files in it.
And if I remember right... @HPTesla is right. EFS is in 3 partitions. One of them is actually empty, but is still needed.
You can see the mk9efs files in the folder but that's it. Im guessing FreeGee and TWRP are basically just taking a picture of the partitions.
So to the OP, are you trying to make sure the files are there? Or are you trying to access the files in there?

? You should be able to do it from within TWRP. It depends on the version of TWRP you are using, 2.5.0.0 has been the most stable for this phone in my experience. It's an option in my backup and restore that I can check/uncheck. However, TWRP 2.6.3.0+ is needed to flash almost all 4.4 based roms and the options are different.

If you are still using the same TWRP version you used to make the backup but switched to an AOSP based rom it appears as if the backup disappeared. The backup is located in /data/media/TWRP but TWRP will look in /data/media/0/TWRP. You can copy the old backup to the 0/TWRP folder and reboot recovery.
If you are using a different version of TWRP than the one you used to make the backup, your backup may also not show up. You should use the version you used to make the back up to restore it back. I hope this helps.

Made backup, can't find it back.

I've just made a backup with cwm but now I can't find it anywhere in my file..
Running stock ROM
Anyone knows how to remove this backup? Memory is full
Don't have root.
Probably it is in internal sd card. Search for a folder called CWM.

Nope, I did it on my friends phone, was going to flash Liquid Smooth for him, so made backup for safety but the backup took 3gb space and that was all he had left.
I used this one (CWM) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2364980
I stopt after step 6, only wanted CWM recovery because Liquid Smooth would give root automaticly.. I did everything right,
- CWM worked
- Made backup (didn't know it would be 3gb)
- Rebooted, phone says not enough memory
- Can't find the backup. Really NOWHERE, trust me.
- CWM was not installed anymore when I again booted in recovery.
So the problem is that cwm is not installed anymore? If I flash md5. again with odin to get cwm will I find the nandroid backup?
I really need to solve this, it's my friends phone soo..
I made backup for safety, but now the backup is the problem because it's so big and can't be found.
Thanks
