I have a galaxy S3 (SGH-I747) originally on Rogers form Canada. I bought an Un lock code and unlocked it. The phone shows signal, makes calls and SMS, but NO 4G and NO network access. (internet pages don't load when disconnected from WiFi)
Under Mobile Network I cannot connect to ATT's network. Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong? Or is there a ROM i need to install after I ROOT the phone? Do I even need to ROOT it? (Sorry in advance, i come from the world of Jailbreaking, but have rooted Droids in the past)
Thx!
I'm not an expert, but you probably need to check your APN settings, and change them to AT&Ts if they aren't already. You can check this in Settings -> More Settings (in Wireless and networks section) -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names
I don't know what the AT&T settings should be, but you can probably find it easily enough. Also, you might want to Shut down the phone, remove the SIM, reboot without a sim, then shut down and put it in again to make it read the APN settings from the sim
Try flashing the ATT rom and see if that makes it work to start.
Got It!!!
I had to manually add my APN settings. I was over looking the button on the bottom left to configure it.
Thanks for the help!:cyclops:
Does the SGH-I747 (Rogers version form Canada) pick up LTE on AT&T?
I frequently run from Toronto to Buffalo. I took my S3 from ICS to Jellybean 4.1.1 and have had no issues until yesterday.
Upon crossing, I lost all service. I tried to go into the menus and see what was the matter without success. Later, I
realized that under MOBILE NETWORKS, Data Roaming wasn't checked. So I checked it off........still no service until
I was about a mile from the border, back on Rogers.
Anyone experience this?? I've bad numerous blackeberry's and cross without an issue all over the US and Caribbean.
I'm confussed.......and concerned about making another trip to the US, without my briefcase which has a backup blackberry
in it........
Suggestions? I fugured that checking the roaming box would have grabbed a carrier..........NOPE.........meanwhile,
my friend who has the same phone still on ICS worked fine................that's the strange part...........
Thanks guys.
Hi!
One thing you could check is if you activated the automatic selection of carrier, and if your phone can see other carriers' networks.
1. Go to Settings.
2. Under Wireless and networks, open More settings.
3. Under Networks, select Mobile networks.
4. Select Network operators.
5. Your phone should now disconnect and search for visible networks. (It should show networks you can connect to and ones you cannot; that is normal.) See if you find any carrier listed on this screen when the search is completed. If no network appear, press again Search networks to scan the visible networks again.
6. Press Select automatically to automatically register to the prefered network. When Rogers is in this list, your phone should register automatically to Rogers. If not, then it should roam on a network with which Rogers has a roaming agreement. You should also be able to manually select to which network you would like to roam by pressing the carrier's name (again, you will register only if Rogers has a roaming agreement with the said carrier).
Happened again this morning. However, I did what you said (here in Toronto) and it found BELL, TElus and Rogers. Now, it
would't find anything across in Buffalo. VERY strange. Called Rogers when I crossed and they were no help.
Could it be possible that it's an issue with Jellybean?? The phone is rooted and I used the Robinson's root injected JB ROM.
Suggestions? I'm crossing again in the morning... Can test more settings.....can't bring my old blackberry because it's a
regular sim and this thing uses a micro...

even easier than that, go to the market place and download nokia network setup, inset sim and run it. It will then set the phone up using the carrier information installed on the SIM card.
Hi,
1. I bought a Samsung s4 mini SGH-I257M, locked by Telus.
2. I tried install super root, but each time it tried to launch the application, a shield from up-left corner will block it to run.
3. I asked a mobile shop unlocked for me with Z3X, but the sim card cannot be registered (the sim card is not from Telus.) Every time when the phone try to register the sim card to network, there is a small shield icon will shows in the up-left corner and blocks it.
4 After two days, I went to the shop and got my phone back. I rooted my phone with Root Dashi, a chinese root software. It works! I inserted a Fido sim, the shield no longer there, but I still cannot register my phone to the network. Any idea?
Sorry for my English.

Rooting and carrier unlock are not the same thing. it sounds like you do not have an APN for Fido or slightly possible the shop was not successful, but if so the Fido SIM should prompt the phone to ask for an unlock code.
If so, there are tons of outfits that offer carrier/provider unlocking. You can Google the string "carrier unlock SGH-I257M". You will find How to videos on YouTube regarding unlocking as well.
But likely it is just a lack of an Fido APN not allowing it to register on the repeater. I looked for the APN BTW, No luck.
You might also do some XDA searches on Chinese online Rooting. The XDA Developer Arco68 has an excellent method that works very well on your phone if you should loose the root you have.

What do you mean "do some XDA search on Chinese online Rooting".
Should I ask Arco68 and see is there a i257m ROM for me?
When I power on my phone with Fido SIM card, it won't ask for unlock code any more. Where I can get the APN setting?

There are several threads on XDA about Chinese online rooting, it has been found that IMEI's, personal data and so forth have been transmitted to the host servers in the rooting process and links on XDA (wisely) have been banned until the matter has been fully researched. There is a good search function on these forums. You can find info.
Asking a developer for a specific ROM is bad form, just asking generaly in the Q&A section in will net what you are seeking. The Dev's are not paid, they donate serious work to the community as a whole, Read the forums for the i9195's, those are the ROMs available right now.
Read up on APN's, locate Fido users, call fido, do research. Anyway, hope some of that helps, it's about all I know about Fido. Learning with some effort is well worth the time spent. No one is born knowing this.

Press the options button on your device, tap on Save in order to save the APN settings.
Open the Internet browser icon on your device and start browsing. There are occasions where restarting your device is needed before it can browse. If you cannot connect to the Internet, restart the phone and try browsing the Internet again.
NOTE: The created APN will show up on the APNs screen. To activate the APN, tap on the radio button located in front of APN.
Hi Systwk,
Thank you! Actually I use Chatr, not Fido. Because I don't want damage my current SIM card (cut to micro), so I use FIDO sim card which is currently not in use to test my phone. I got my SIM adapter today. I cut my Chatr SIM card and tested with my phone. It says registered on network, but the notification on the main screen says ?Selected network(chatr) unavailable", and I cannot make any calls. When I choose "Select automatically", it will say "unable to connect, try later".
Do you have any idea?
BTW, I tried with APN FIDO, it's not work.

farewellartist's suggestion is a good one. It could help to see what is going on. That aside, you have to use an APN that matches the network you intend to use and the account has to be active. Also the network protocol set on auto shows it finds the Network, the Sim and phone can connect, but it also needs to know how to communicate with it to register on the system. That's possibly the issue.
You really may find some help calling your Providers tech support regarding connection. Yes, that about as fun as banging your toes with a hammer, but usually has better results. It may be as simple now as plunging in an Access Point Name, user name and password in the APN. (Some Pre-Pay acct's use user and Password) Good news is you DO have connectivity. It's now down to details.
Keep plugging along, you are making progress.
Here is the support link for their Pre-Pay. I'm in Florida so I'm clueless regards to who you are dealing with.

You are certainly not weak on signal. As long as you have the APN set at 'APN: chatrweb.apn' you should register.
Rare as it is, Bad SIMS happen. (Murphys Law). Just to rule out you can try the below and I Know the steps getting there are not needed, but it's for others in the future who may be newer at this:
To check connection at the base level try the following.
GoTo: Settings-Connections-Network connections-More networks-Wireless and networks-Mobile Networks-Network Mode, THEN start ticking the 4 setting starting with GSM only, and work upwards. It can't hurt.
Also when trying to connect with chatr, in the search for Network operators/Available Networks in mobile Networks, when it's done searching nets available, choose one chatr. not auto. If it finds two chatr towers try each.
I'm adding the chatr APN for anyone in the future as well. I assume you have the same but it's not in the screenshots.
You must be frustrated by now, hope someone else with experience on chatr can offer a fix. I assume you did get on either Telus or Bell so you know the thing connects, a replacement SIM is the last option I can think of.
Good Luck.............

If it were me I would not re-flash anything. The connection problem would not likely be from a carrier unlock. Also it is not likely it would be from rooting or installing the CWM boot loader.
You have a known system now, you know when it worked, and you know the few modifications you have done. Even if you have called Chatr tech support before, it might help to call again and tell them it will not log on to their system. DO NOT tell them you have rooted the phone, DO NOT tell them you installed a boot loader. If you do that, they will probably say that is the problem, END of support. Just say it was unlocked by a dealer and now takes their SIM but it won't work.
They should walk you through each step of the configuration, they want your money every month, you want their service. Good place to start. Give them your IMEI, make sure it's good and not 'blocked'. it's in the settings/about device/status or dial *#06#. I'm assuming you already have confirmed your phone is comparable with chatr, I think you mentioned it was from TELUS, but with BELL, ROGERS or whatever, unlocking does not guarantee the Modem is the same as the new network you are trying to use.. There are several other reasons, but SIM, IMEI and improper configuration are the most likely problems if compatible.
There is a chance it is something simple that has been missed. You have shown patience, that is a big plus with modding phones. Going step by step and being willing to start over is something many here have done, and many times. Small problems are sometime the easiest to miss. So Call Chatr tech support, if they have an outlet near you maybe you can get a replacement SIM from them, (I would check that first) as I mentioned before.
One other thing to try, see if you can get a new Pre-Pay/month to month SIM from TELUS or the original carrier the phone was branded for. It should work and if not, they know their configuration. I'm out of suggestions, hopefully someone from Canada can be of more help. Don't give up. There are always answers.
Thank you, Systwk
The SIM card works with my old phone, so probably is not the SIM card problem. I take out the SIM card from S4 mini and power on it, the signal still shows good. So, I think flash ROM is the most simple way for me. Anyway, I will can chatr on Monday.
Hi Systwk, I called Chatr just now. She said the APN setting is only for Internet and I need to go to a Chatr shop to check my phone and SIM card. I think I will go this weekend.
I think you bought the phone that has been report as stolen and has been blacklist so it is block on all network in Canada.
QCN FILE
If you are having a problem getting a signal on your I257M message me I will send you the qcn file for it so you can write it to phone via QPST.
Hi all,
I recently switched from T Mobile to Mint, but for some reason the phone won't connect to Mint network. The only way I could get it to register with Mint network is if I login to Mint website or use their mobile app to disable wifi calling then re-enable it. This method only works when I'm home, but if I restart the phone or if it loses connection, it just will not connect again until I disable wifi calling and reenable it through their app. But the same trick does not work when I'm at work. I'm not sure what the difference between the towers where I live and those where I work. Basically, when I try to register manually or automatically, I get unable to connect to the network at this time and to try again. Even if the phone isn't registered with Mint network, I can still make and receive calls through Wifi Calling though.
The phone worked fine when I had T Mobile. I also have LG G8X and the same sim works fine with Mint.
My phone is Sprint LG G8 G820UM20f cross flashed with US Open NAO firmware. Again, the phone worked perfectly fine with T Mobile before I switch to Mint.
I prefer using the G8 instead of the G8X as I like the smaller size and better screen. Any suggestions on what I should try here before I try reset the phone to factory settings or flash with another firmware? I already tried deleting cache, reset network, safe mode, using T Mobile APN instead of Mint.
I should also mention that T Mobile sim uses MNC 260 and Mint Mobile 240. I'm wondering if this has something to do with it not being able to connect to certain T Mobile towers, but according to what I read sim using 240 MNC should be able to connect to cell towers using MNC 260.
Thank you
Did a factory reset of the phone through the recovery menu, but unfortunately phone still won't register with Mint network.
Cross flashed from US Open NAO firmware G820QM20f_00_NAO_US_OP_0402 to USC (US Cellular) firmware G820UM20j_00_USC_US_OP_0607 but same thing... still refuses to register with Mint network. There is also no Wifi calling option in Settings menu with USC firmware and the hidden menu also shows it's not provisioned for wifi calling.
I'm going to flash it with G820UM20j_00_OPEN_CA_OP_0120 next and see if I have any luck.
So sad Still no luck with Canada firmware. CA firmware is even more minimal than US Cellular... no VoLTE or Wifi calling. Also no matter what firmwares, T Mobile APN always show up under APN. Which partition have this info saved under?
I'm wondering if I should try flashing it with Verizon Android 11?
I cross flashed with T Mobile G820TM20j_00_TMO_US_OP_0216.kdz firmware, but no luck still. The phone with this firmware should work great if you have T Mobile as you can see from the attached pictures, all three options... Wifi calling, VolTE, and Video Calling now show provisioned in hidden menu *#*#4636#*#*. With the US Open NAO firmware, only Wifi Calling and VoLTE would be provisioned.
I might switch back TMobile again after my 6 months plan with Mint ended just to avoid this headache.
Note: I followed this guide written by @netmsm here:

Hi there ;) Thanks to all other guys here who have made helpful development to tame this beautiful =) To crossflash models other than LG G8 please read post 3. Before asking any question please read the troubleshooting section at the bottom of...

I use mint and my apn settings are for 310 / 260. My G8 is xflashed to us open also. Works perfect. Sounds like u might have messed up apn settings.

Thank you for confirming that it works with Mint. I contacted their online tech support twice and they basically said my G8 is not compatible with their system based on my IMEI number. Their compatibility checks also said the same thing for my G8X, though it works perfectly fine with their network.
Anyway, your confirmation gave me an idea to try another sim they sent me for the 12 months plan. I originally purchased the 12 months plan but canceled it and purchased their 3 months + 3 months free plan. Even though I canceled the 12 months plan, they still sent me the sim kit.
The sim that comes with the 12 months plan happened to be using 260 MNC so I put it in, and it registered with their network instantly. I'll try and see if I can transfer the plan over to this sim.
Not sure why the G8 has problem using sim with 240 MNC, but not the G8X.
Unfortunately, the 260 MNC sim can't be used as replacement sim to transfer the plan over, so they sent me a new one.
The new replacement sim also uses 240 MNC, but what is weird is that before activating the new sim, my LG G8 had no problem registering with Mint network and it connected as 4G LTE. I rebooted the phone multiple times just to make sure it works consistently and wasn't just a fluke. But as soon as I went through the process of activating the sim to transfer the number over, it wouldn't register with the network again and only allows emergency call just like the old sim. Of course, the new sim works fine in the G8X.
I'm not sure what to makes of this now. I'm wondering if sim using MNC 260 would have the same problem once activated. At this point I guess I just have to use my G8X and once the 6 months ended, I'll probably switch to T Mobile $15 plan even though you only get 2.5GB of data compared to 4GB for Mint.
