[Q] Samsung S4 mini SGH-I257M unlock help - Galaxy S 4 Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting
Hi,
1. I bought a Samsung s4 mini SGH-I257M, locked by Telus.
2. I tried install super root, but each time it tried to launch the application, a shield from up-left corner will block it to run.
3. I asked a mobile shop unlocked for me with Z3X, but the sim card cannot be registered (the sim card is not from Telus.) Every time when the phone try to register the sim card to network, there is a small shield icon will shows in the up-left corner and blocks it.
4 After two days, I went to the shop and got my phone back. I rooted my phone with Root Dashi, a chinese root software. It works! I inserted a Fido sim, the shield no longer there, but I still cannot register my phone to the network. Any idea?
Sorry for my English.

Rooting and carrier unlock are not the same thing. it sounds like you do not have an APN for Fido or slightly possible the shop was not successful, but if so the Fido SIM should prompt the phone to ask for an unlock code.
If so, there are tons of outfits that offer carrier/provider unlocking. You can Google the string "carrier unlock SGH-I257M". You will find How to videos on YouTube regarding unlocking as well.
But likely it is just a lack of an Fido APN not allowing it to register on the repeater. I looked for the APN BTW, No luck.
You might also do some XDA searches on Chinese online Rooting. The XDA Developer Arco68 has an excellent method that works very well on your phone if you should loose the root you have.

What do you mean "do some XDA search on Chinese online Rooting".
Should I ask Arco68 and see is there a i257m ROM for me?
When I power on my phone with Fido SIM card, it won't ask for unlock code any more. Where I can get the APN setting?

There are several threads on XDA about Chinese online rooting, it has been found that IMEI's, personal data and so forth have been transmitted to the host servers in the rooting process and links on XDA (wisely) have been banned until the matter has been fully researched. There is a good search function on these forums. You can find info.
Asking a developer for a specific ROM is bad form, just asking generaly in the Q&A section in will net what you are seeking. The Dev's are not paid, they donate serious work to the community as a whole, Read the forums for the i9195's, those are the ROMs available right now.
Read up on APN's, locate Fido users, call fido, do research. Anyway, hope some of that helps, it's about all I know about Fido. Learning with some effort is well worth the time spent. No one is born knowing this.

APN Settings: From inside the Fido support website:
-------------------------->
Tap on Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names;
Once on the APN screen, press the Options button on the device;
Tap on New APN
Enter a name into the APN Name field. such as Fido APN
Please insert the following APN settings:
APN Settings:
APN: Fido-core-appl1.apn
If you have a LTE device, use the following setting: LTEMOBILE.APN
MMS (Picture & Video Messaging Settings):
MMSC: http://mms.fido.ca
MMS Proxy: 205.151.11.13
MMS Port: 80
Leave the following fields blank: Proxy, Port, User Name, Password, Server
Press the options button on your device, tap on Save in order to save the APN settings.
Open the Internet browser icon on your device and start browsing. There are occasions where restarting your device is needed before it can browse. If you cannot connect to the Internet, restart the phone and try browsing the Internet again.
NOTE: The created APN will show up on the APNs screen. To activate the APN, tap on the radio button located in front of APN.
Hi Systwk,
Thank you! Actually I use Chatr, not Fido. Because I don't want damage my current SIM card (cut to micro), so I use FIDO sim card which is currently not in use to test my phone. I got my SIM adapter today. I cut my Chatr SIM card and tested with my phone. It says registered on network, but the notification on the main screen says ?Selected network(chatr) unavailable", and I cannot make any calls. When I choose "Select automatically", it will say "unable to connect, try later".
Do you have any idea?
BTW, I tried with APN FIDO, it's not work.

farewellartist's suggestion is a good one. It could help to see what is going on. That aside, you have to use an APN that matches the network you intend to use and the account has to be active. Also the network protocol set on auto shows it finds the Network, the Sim and phone can connect, but it also needs to know how to communicate with it to register on the system. That's possibly the issue.
You really may find some help calling your Providers tech support regarding connection. Yes, that about as fun as banging your toes with a hammer, but usually has better results. It may be as simple now as plunging in an Access Point Name, user name and password in the APN. (Some Pre-Pay acct's use user and Password) Good news is you DO have connectivity. It's now down to details.
Keep plugging along, you are making progress.
Here is the support link for their Pre-Pay. I'm in Florida so I'm clueless regards to who you are dealing with.

Hope that helps you some.

You are certainly not weak on signal. As long as you have the APN set at 'APN: chatrweb.apn' you should register.
Rare as it is, Bad SIMS happen. (Murphys Law). Just to rule out you can try the below and I Know the steps getting there are not needed, but it's for others in the future who may be newer at this:
To check connection at the base level try the following.
GoTo: Settings-Connections-Network connections-More networks-Wireless and networks-Mobile Networks-Network Mode, THEN start ticking the 4 setting starting with GSM only, and work upwards. It can't hurt.
Also when trying to connect with chatr, in the search for Network operators/Available Networks in mobile Networks, when it's done searching nets available, choose one chatr. not auto. If it finds two chatr towers try each.
I'm adding the chatr APN for anyone in the future as well. I assume you have the same but it's not in the screenshots.
You must be frustrated by now, hope someone else with experience on chatr can offer a fix. I assume you did get on either Telus or Bell so you know the thing connects, a replacement SIM is the last option I can think of.
Good Luck.............

If it were me I would not re-flash anything. The connection problem would not likely be from a carrier unlock. Also it is not likely it would be from rooting or installing the CWM boot loader.
You have a known system now, you know when it worked, and you know the few modifications you have done. Even if you have called Chatr tech support before, it might help to call again and tell them it will not log on to their system. DO NOT tell them you have rooted the phone, DO NOT tell them you installed a boot loader. If you do that, they will probably say that is the problem, END of support. Just say it was unlocked by a dealer and now takes their SIM but it won't work.
They should walk you through each step of the configuration, they want your money every month, you want their service. Good place to start. Give them your IMEI, make sure it's good and not 'blocked'. it's in the settings/about device/status or dial *#06#. I'm assuming you already have confirmed your phone is comparable with chatr, I think you mentioned it was from TELUS, but with BELL, ROGERS or whatever, unlocking does not guarantee the Modem is the same as the new network you are trying to use.. There are several other reasons, but SIM, IMEI and improper configuration are the most likely problems if compatible.
There is a chance it is something simple that has been missed. You have shown patience, that is a big plus with modding phones. Going step by step and being willing to start over is something many here have done, and many times. Small problems are sometime the easiest to miss. So Call Chatr tech support, if they have an outlet near you maybe you can get a replacement SIM from them, (I would check that first) as I mentioned before.
One other thing to try, see if you can get a new Pre-Pay/month to month SIM from TELUS or the original carrier the phone was branded for. It should work and if not, they know their configuration. I'm out of suggestions, hopefully someone from Canada can be of more help. Don't give up. There are always answers.
Thank you, Systwk
The SIM card works with my old phone, so probably is not the SIM card problem. I take out the SIM card from S4 mini and power on it, the signal still shows good. So, I think flash ROM is the most simple way for me. Anyway, I will can chatr on Monday.
Hi Systwk, I called Chatr just now. She said the APN setting is only for Internet and I need to go to a Chatr shop to check my phone and SIM card. I think I will go this weekend.
I think you bought the phone that has been report as stolen and has been blacklist so it is block on all network in Canada.
QCN FILE
If you are having a problem getting a signal on your I257M message me I will send you the qcn file for it so you can write it to phone via QPST.

H620 on Fido network
I have an unlocked H620 to be used for data on the Fido network (Canada). I am running on WM6.5 with the ROM 3VO.2.50.080809 on the GPRS settings I indicated both wap.fido.ca and internet.fido.ca with username/pass: fido/fido but I cannot connect! also tried with/without indicating the IP 205.151.011.011 (this is the one sent by a Fido CSR in a txt message) but still no luck any ideeas, please?
From what i been searching Fido is now Rodgers i think your search could be considerably better with that criteria. "I may be wrong as i'm only going on what i read"
G_luck I'm using Fido with the same smartphone and I think the problem is the network Fido don't let you access for any URL is you use Google map application you will see that you have access to the Internet I lost 20$ from two days just using this application , I'm sure it you try fido.ca it will work if not ask support services again Hope this can help
Take it into Fido and they will set it up for U.
[Q] Droid incredible 2 verizon phone unlocked to t-mobile!!!!!!!!!!!
hi so i recentlly got a droid incredible 2 and unlocked it to use on tmobile. now my question is can 3g be enabled to use on tmobile network? i have it working on edge so far but it love to take advantage of the 3g network . plz help!!
Congratulations, you have posted in the wrong phone forum. Also, I don't believe you would have access to T-Mobile 3g unless the Inc2 supported their AWS 3g bands.
figured id post in the wrong place and thanx il check out if it does support the bands
No problem. According to this site: http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_droid_incredible_2-3938.php the Inc2 supports gsm 2100 which I believe is one of the same frequencies of T-Mobiles 3g network. I can't help you any further since dealing with frequencies and other networks isn't something I know of.
Can it be used with att? Like say with the straight talk e71 sim card ? Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
OP, how do you make it work? Have you verified with Tmobile sim card? I unlocked hinc2, but it shows "no service" with tmobile sim under GSM.

Click to collapse Great, glad to hear that you got it working on Walmart's T-Mo family plan now, it is "slow" on mobile data but just as good when you are on WiFi. We retired our 2 DI2 last month and ditched Big Red, I hear ya - we saved 50% each month, more than enough to pay for two Nexus 5. If yours is rooted/bootloader unlocked with CWM, you don't need to do anything with the stock kernel - just leave it alone, find the custom rom's zip file that you want - copy to mSD card, boot into recovery - do a full wipe, flash & reboot, then setup as usual & restore your apps. The stock VZW rom has all the bloatware that are useless, especially on other carriers - use Andy Bone's stocked Rom instead, or SkyRaider's Zeus or TSM Sense, all 3 of them works 99.89999% in GSM (using 2 of them now) - read the FAQ / Sticky first, as it is detailed & explained it all with how to's. I have those roms in offline storage - PM me if you cannot find a working public links to download them. Prices for brand new 4G LTE smartphones are mad crazy, I understand - VZW wanted about $300 each to upgrade + fees + ETF & 24 months contract, if you shop around when ready on eBay, you can find some pre-owned ones that are solid with custom Rom, and reliable with reasonable prices on the 3G HSPA side, i.e. saw pre-owned Motorola Atrix 4G with 4" screen in good conditions for about $70 - in exchange, you get much faster 3G/HSPA+ speed with mobile data (if you need it on the go) Have a safe & happy holiday.
Skyraider is probably one of the best sense roms on gingerbread with a few tweaks to it. Thing with unlocking the sim on this phone to work on a different network u will eventually start to have issues since it was designed for only verizon cdma and global gsm only. A lot of the gsm is still in the work. When unlocking any phone to work on a different network ur mostly always gonna have an issue with 3G bec gsm is on a totally different band and unless the phone itself was designed specificially for gsm itll be an issue ull more than likely have. An apn change might fix it but not a lot of roms have the apn settings unless its more the line Cyanogenmod. There is an apn settings shortcut in the playstore u can use to set it. Me personally i wouldve stuck with Verizon because the majority of the worlds population is cdma service towers and tmobile has less coverage then sprint or at&t but too each his own. Good luck and hope the apn change helps gain u 3G
No Unlock Prompt
Hey guys, I'm knew to these forums and I just made the switch from an iphone to the galaxy s3. My dad is with Rogers and he gave me his Samsung Galaxy s3 i747m. I'm with Fido and I purchased a unlock code from cellunlocker.net. The issue I am having is that when I put in my foreign sim card there is no prompt that asks for me to insert an unlock code. Can anyone help me out?

Fido, being a Rogers subsidiary, might not need an unlock for a Rogers phone. (Just an educated guess on my part.) Is the SIM working for you? Are you getting network access? If so, can you find another SIM to try (perhaps enlist a friend's help), and if not, are you perhaps on a non-stock ROM, most of which have issues with the unlock screen?

You need a different SIM I went through the same problem (trying to unlock my Rogers S3 for Fido). Because Fido and Rogers are sister companies, a Fido SIM won't bring up the prompt. The phone will work for voice on Fido but not for data until you unlock it. You need to run out and get a prepaid SIM for a different carrier (I chose a Bell one), or put one in if you have one lying around. The Bell SIM cost me about $10.50. Reboot with that inserted, and the prompt will come up where you can enter your code. Then, you can reboot with your Fido SIM inserted and all will be well. If you can't get data at that point, make sure the APN settings are correct for Fido. You'll be good to go at that point.

Galaxy S4 4.4.2 NB4 won't send MMS or receive em =/
I got this phone for my dad, as he had this old crappy phone for years and overpaid for his cell bill every month for minute plan lol i know. So i got him this Galaxy s4-m919 model to find out that it was upgraded as part of a plan, then the person claimed it they lost it to sell it to another person, and ofc they wouldn't refund me. So i took another path and came on here to get help, ofc it was a T-mobile phone, so I guess i'm blacklisted on t-mobile networks, but i flashed to 4.3 modem, did sim unlock, then flashed back to 4.2.2. Put in my new Att sim card, and service has worked ever since, the lame part is now he wants to use MMS, and it keeps on failing to send/receive, when he recieve a mms from someone, it comes up as a huge ass url(you have to click it to see the picture in the browser or w.e, but never ever loads rofl, idk y.) He doesn't use any apps, he just uses it for calling, internet at times, navigation, wants to use MMS, takes pictures/video, etc. But MMS doesn't work, I ever called the H2O to help me, and they said that i needed to change my "Message Center #" for it to work, seriously? My other phone has "+12063130004", and my dad's is "+13123149810", i think H2O rep wanted me to change it to the # my other phone has which is the first number i listed. Is this really the care? If so, how can I change it? =/
First thing to check, in my opinion, is to see if all the APN options are set correctly. Settings \ Mobile Network \ <more> APN Settings will usually get you there. The ATT APN settings can be found here but you may need to search around if H2O requires different ones. I'm on standard ATT and the settings at that link work for me, with my M919 phone. Good luck! Marc Click to expand... Click to collapse Just tried ATT Phone APN settings, and my internet nor MMS work; yeah H2O has a bit different settings then att. They're: name: h2ointernet (doesn't do anything but eh) APN: att.mvno proxy: not set port: not set server: not set MMSC: http://mmsc.cingurlar.com Multimedia message proxy: 66.209.11.33 Multimedia message port: 80 MCC: 310 MNC: 410 Authentication type: not set APN type: * APN roaming protocol: IPv4 Turn APN on/off: on Mobile virtual network operator type: none I also saw somewhere that you can hook up your phone to the computer and change the Message Center # using Root Explorer(just re-read the post on xda about this and u have to have it rooted =/), then 'SilverEdit' to edit the xml to enter the message center number?( also heard it wasn't permanent either, if u turned it off, or battery died or w.e. it would revert to the previous #, not sure tho) Not sure what to do here. The internet works fine, but H2O rep says i need to change my Message center number to a different one for mms to work. Also tried changing default msging app to hangouts and sending a mms, and it came up with " mobile plan blocks MMS." I also put his sim card into my working phone, and ofc the message center # was the same when i switched it over to my phone and ofc it won't send, says "mms not supported by network, service response error"
Anyone?
Can anyone help me with "Message Center"? My MMS doesn't work, can't send or receive(when i receive an mms, it comes as a big ass url something like "viewmymessage.com/webgui/bla bla/ bla bla/ and so on/", can't open the link on the phone.
If you have AT&T service on a t-mobile phone it needs to be unlocked. He is using it to call people, so I guess it is. You should try flashing an AT&T modem. Before that, try making your APN type: IPv4 or IPv6. And MM message proxy:0
I'l try that, just put in my H2O settings: APN type: IPv4 or IPv6. And MM message proxy:0; Can't try atm, as for some reason his data went down to 0, even tho he wasn't even using internet for anything on his phone...which was weird. The way I unlocked this phone was flashing the 4.2.2. modem, then went thru "service mode" and did step by step. If the Apn settings you gave, wouldn't work, would flashing the att modem 100% work(got link for the modem, cba to find it atm, last time if flashed it, i used odin)? I'm on 4.4.2 Android version, Baseband: m919uvufnb4.

In the slot where it says "APN type", put it as IPv4 and the slot below "APN type", put it as IPv4, also. But non of that is worth trying if you are using AT&T service. You need AT&T modem and APN settings. Edit: I was watching a movie and read you comment wrong lol. Yes you need to flash AT&T modem and APN

Click to collapse Actually, be careful with this. The modem (which is two parts) has to be paired with the phone model. For example, an M919 can't use the modem from an I337. The Modem runs the radio hardware, which varies by phone. ATT & T-Mo variants have different antennae bands supported, so need somewhat different radios. I'm not sure if trying a different radio will brick anything, but numerous threads have said it doesn't work. The modem consists of the modem.bin (the "GSM Modem") which can be flashed at will, and the non-hlos.bin ("LTE Modem")which needs to be paired with the phone bootloader, or else chaos ensues. You DO need the right APN settings. Unfortunately, I have no experience with the message center thing... can't help there. Marc

I tried ATT settings, didnt work. I put on H20 settings that were on the site, didn't work. Tried my bros H2O settings that he got from chat rep on their site, then 4G started working, but I keep getting "Mms failed, server error" or w.e. keeps failing, put the H2O internet settings(on), and mms settings. Not sure if his phone is missing something or because his phone is blocked on tmobile's networks, his using H2O meaning his on ATT's network.(i bought him a cheap 1$ mirco-sim, off ebay) Not sure if that plays any role, the calls are good, dats works now, etc, just mms wouldn't work. Suggestions? Some1 on H2Os rep side said it could be the "message center #", that's y it can't be sent or receive or w.e.(His is atts message center #, and its greyed out"
Anyone know how to fix mms problem?(cant receive or send atm, tried a lot of things). Mms keep failing, server error, not supported by network or w.e., lost on wut else to do.
Anyone?

I guess they probably either do it themselves ir buy it from ppl who do it.(upgrade their phone to gs4 or w.e. then claim it lost or stolen, thus keeping their old one and selling the new one) I think they probably flashed it to work for internation, but idk, might've been rooted before 4.4.2, since ota got installed, means root is gone. Anyway to fix the problem instead of just replying with a negative reply? I want to use the phone, calling etc works fine everywhere, 4g is a bit in some places, mms doesnt work at all, one rep at h2o said it might be cuz of message center number, he wanted me to change it to a diff one and see if it solves it or not, but my message center is greyed out.
Apparently there is something wrong with it, at least you should be able to get it replaced for one that works. It could be a build.prop issue. Just guessing. Pp. Good luck.
Still looking for a solution, anything I could try, to fix Mms to work again?(cant send or receive as it says "server error", failed mms, etc)
Unusual Solution for APN settings that can't be edited normally
If you have a phone which needs APN settings modified for it to function fully this may be of interest. In many cases you can simply go into Settings > Network > Network and Internet > Mobile Data and add an APN or edit an existing APN. However in some cases you may find as I did that the SIM / phone combination does not allow you to edit or add APN settings. If you have root their may be ways to edit the APN configuration files directly. However with Android 10 and some other situations that becomes difficult if not impossible. In my case even the phone network service support could not update the APN setting. I knew what the APN settings needed to be but since I had an unrooted Android 10 device (a smartwatch in this case but it will work for phones also) I could not get access to folders to edit the configuration and it is unlikely it would have been saved due to Android 10's read only system partition. On this device I had cellular phone calls and text working but NO Mobile data. I could see the APN settings were not correct for the service I was on for Mobile data to work. I tried everything for days to edit but it was grayed out and I could not add a new APN. In the process of pursuing a solution I found that putting in a different SIM (in this case a Textnow SIM for their new free phone service through Sprint) that I could edit the APN settings when that SIM was inserted. So you will need to find a SIM card that will allow you to edit settings. Now the real trick involves hot swapping SIM cards so if you aren't comfortable with that then you won't be able to do this. There seems to be differing opinions on this but no phones or watches or SIM cards were damaged when I tried this. What I did was edit the other SIM by changing the APN settings. Then when I hit the back key it said something to the effect the settings were not allowed on this. At that point I pulled out the SIM with the device ON. I then put back in the SIM for my service provider with the device still on. The settings showed up now on my formerly uneditable SIM ! Mobile data now worked fine. I I had a second device I wanted to put the SIM in (identical to the first device) hoping the settings would still be there but they were not. Apparently communication between the SIM card and the phone gets APN settings transferred to the phone or watch. So I wanted to do the same procedure on this second device. In attempting that it did not seem to be working the same at first. However after trying for about an hour it finally worked on the second device also. So persistence pays off if it doesn't work at first. I kept turning things on and off in the Mobile data settings, rebooting and playing around with developer options. I wish I could say exactly what got it to work on the second device or why it just worked on the first device the first try but I haven't been able to pin down the variable which achieved success. But the conclusion is that is you can't edit your APN settings normally you may have success with this method if you keep at it a bit. Good luck and please post here if you have success with this method and share any insights into how you got it to work for your device.
I know I'm a little late your one man party here. I just wanted to finally clear the air on this once and for all. So that every one can edit any and every so called "locked APN" for whatever carrier and or devices. So here we go. First off long time telecom cyber security engineer. Step 1: Find all the APN's that your specific Carrier used for your Sim card and device. Write them down or screen shot them. Some carriers and devices may only use 1, others 2-3 +. Step 2: Click and add another APN just as the 1 that is locked on the device. Option for option identical and click save. If you have only 1 APN. It should have now saved, unlocked the APN and you should have 2 identical. You can now go back and edit the APN that you just created. If not or you can't it usually means you have more APN's to add before they will unlock. Ultimately allowing for deletion. Have patience as this may require a little time of trial and error. Good luck all and have fun with it.
