I have a request with a small donation as a reward. I'm not rich, but I can reward with some beer money.
I have managed to somehow delete my build.prop file while rooted and then managed to un-root my device. Naturally, I rebooted.
My request is for anyone with a bit of extra time to modify zergRush so that it does not look to a build.prop file to verify the android version.
If there are any other ideas on how to root a bricked Fire without a build.prop file, be my guest.
My hope is that once I am able to re-root my device, I will be able to mount /system/ as writeable and then be able to push in a build.prop file. However, obviously, until that happens I cannot put in a build.prop file.
If you have any questions I pretty much let it all out on the "How to unblock your kindle" thread.
If no one is able to do this I would understand. This is obviously beyond my technical expertise but I do appreciate any efforts or even suggestions. Even if there's no attempts made here, it is still shocking how much help is given on this forum.
EDIT: I was able to get my hands on a valid system.img and then flashed the system.img to my system partition. Doing so corrected my build.prop and my device became bootable. Thanks for all the help.
Did it update to 6.2 while in the midst of your needing around?
what does your device do?
Does it show under adb devices?

I updated to 6.2 on Tuesday. I have followed the directions on the "UNBRICK your kindle" thread. I have done that successfully. However, because my build.prop is missing, I can no longer re-root using zergRush. I believe that fastboot as directed in that thread restores the kindle to factory settings. I'm not quite sure if factory settings is 6.2 or if it goes all the way back to 6.0.

This is the post I created in the "How to unbrick your kindle" thread. It should answer most questions. I can use adb shell on the device but I cannot mount anything and SU responds "permission denied".
----from the other thread----
I am in a similar situation and am trying to work through it. I thought I rooted my device but when I restarted it, it didn't fully load. I've successfully done all of the steps listed in the OP but am still suck in a black screen (it's lit...but it's black) loop.
I believe I have deleted my build.pop file but have a backup listend as build.prop.bak. However, the device is trying to load and is failing. I need to rename my build.prop.bak as the primary build.prop. I have tried to access SU through ADB but am getting "permission denied" almost as if my device wasn't rooted.
I have tried to mount system as RW but I am also getting permission denied.
Any advice. Here is my /system/

EDIT: I have tried to re-root through the method provided as well as superoneclick root, but both have failed because no android system is being recognized. This may have to do with the lack of a proper build.prop on my device.
EDIT2: I figure the above might not be enough information so I will now post what I have done so far to get it bricked, and what I have already tried.
1. I tried the rooting method on rootkindlefire.com and it seemed successful. I then was able to set /system/ as RW via root explorer. I copied a modified build.prop file that is available in the android development forums. However, unfortunately, I believe I may have edited the name of this file or done something wrong in handling it accidentally. Regardless, I pasted this file in the /system/ folder and renamed my original build.prop file to build.prop.bak. I then restarted my kindle fire. Now, it shows the kindle fire screen for a second and then goes black entirely. It is still on (the screen is lit), but the screen is black. It then remains like this until I do a hard reset and then it repeats this process.
2. I have tried to access SU but have been unable to do so. I have been unable to mount system as RW using the instruction a page back. In both situations I get the "permission denied" response from the command line.
3. Everytime I try to root using the method provided in the OP, I get a message saying that it can't find android 2.2 or 2.3
4. I am unable to root again using super click for the same reason.
5. I have otherwise been able to follow all of the steps in the OP successfully, but to no avail. My screen goes black after it shows the kindle fire screen for a couple seconds.
6. Any suggestions would be very very helpful. From my amateur amount of knowledge, it seems to me that I don't have a build.prop in my /system/ but am unable to rename or access my build.prop.bak so that I can set it as the regular bootable build.prop. This is because, even though I thought I had it rooted, I am unable to set the /system/ directory as writable.
7. ANY SUGGESTIONS OR HELP WOULD BE GREAT!
Just as a disclaimer: I acknowledge I'm a moron for not verifying everything when I pushed in a build.prop file into my /system/ folder and restarted. No need to call me names
For those who know a bit more than me...
Would pushing the 6.2 update (or any of the downloadable firmware) to the kindleupdates folder in the sdcard and then rebooting fix my problem? I remember reading that the updates re-writes the build.prop which would fix my situation.
Of course, do you need root permissions to be able to write to the sdcard? I only ask this because I can not get the sdcard to actually show up on my desktop. I would need to push it via terminal or adb shell.
Anyone know if this would work?
I am beginning to realize that I may actually still have root, but since I can't boot up the phone, I can't fill out the superuser access dialog that usually comes up when a program tries to access superuser. I had root before I caused the build.prop problems, but figured that I had somehow lost it when I tried to access SU from ADB. Anyone know of a way to bypass this access dialog?
I checked the root status with OneClickRoot after OTA reported my KF was still rooted (just to be sure) and then re-installed Superuser and pushed the necessary Android APKs back to /system/app and it was working again.

How did you re-install Superuser if you're not able to fully boot up the KF? To be clear, when I try to root with superoneclick it says i'm rooted (and if i try and continue it fails...) but whenever I type in adb shell and then su I get "permission denied."

Don't think our KF were in the same state. I don't have a build.prop to boot my KF into so I can't manage superuser at all (I do, however, have a totally useless build.prop.bak that is sitting there in the directory. ) I have the superuser.apk in there so it seems as though I'm rooted but I still can't get into SU via adb.

Still having the exact same problem! Was able to get the build.prob.bak pulled from /system but can't rename it and push it back to hopefully get this working again.
I am starting to think I may have to send this KF back soon if I don't get it working again.
Any help anyone can provide would be great.
I'm thinking since we are able to get into fastboot, do any developers know if it is possible to push in a new system.img via fastboot? This would solve our build.prop problems no? Any developers know if this is possible?
I would like to compile zergRush myself, but I don't know how to compile Android binary.
It seems require linux to do so.

No , I think the sdcard is not yet mount. Tried cd sdcard and it's not possible.
Is it possible to mount it without root? Cause when we try to mount system folder it's permission denied.
And I'm afraid the system won't run the official update even the patch is inside the sdcard folder.
I think ejrubin's idea on how to fix our bricked kindle fire is completely right , we just need either one of the following :
1. A zergRush binary won't check the build.prop to let us run root and mount the system folder
2. Since we can get into fastboot, I think we need a correct update.zip or system.img to fix it. Any idea to build it from kindle's official update?
Well try "mount sdcard" in the shell. If you can push the update, you can idme bootmode into 0x5001 and it'll take the update in recovery mode
If that doesn't work I'll give a custom zerg a shot
Edit: I got it. If you wanna flash my clockwork build in fastboot and set the fastboot to boot into recovery, you can access your /system through recovery, I do it all the time
It'll be a fastboot flash recovery <the name of the recovery.img I'll post later when I get home>
From there you will have to:
Adb shell
Mount system
Mv /system/build.bak /system/build.prop

If i just type "mount sdcard" it cannot recognize the command.
if try to mount it with -t and mount it to other folder, it just say permission denied.
Of course I wanna flash your clockwork build!!

Last night I tried to root a Fire (6.3.1) for the first time using KFU and briefly saw something flash by about a problem with check_rooted. Someone on the KFU thread mentioned this also. Does this mean the rooting process is incomplete?
Proceeding further, I attempted to install the optional apps and received permission denied errors when abd went to push the vending GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter and GoogleContactsSyncAdapter apk files to /system/app.
Reading further on the KFU thread, someone else suggested sideloading superuser. I did this and still was unable to manually push the files (following the batch file as a model to mount read/write, push the apps, then mount read-only).
The goal was to add access to Google Play to an otherwise stock 6.3.1 operating system. Short of loading a new rom, is there something else I might try?

This is typically nothing to worry about. You will receive an error if the "check_rooted" folder didn't exist to begin with. Normal

The method for doing this is
Code:
adb root
adb remount
adb push ≤filename1≥ /system/app
adb push ≤filename2≥ /system/app
...when finished...

adb remount
adb kill-server

To make things simple, the MoDaCo rom has the exact same interface as stock, except it comes pre rooted with all of the Google apps and services already installed. No work is necessary.

Well, darn. I tried "adb root" and it says: "adbd cannot run as root in production builds." So I guess it isn't really rooted, after all.
Maybe the MoDaCo rom is the way to go, after all. Thanks, anyway!

I wanted to change my device model, so I copied build.prop from another mobile to my mobile. I am already rooted. But unfortunately I did not change the o.s. from gingerbread to froyo in build.prop ( I have android 2.2 FROYO) When I rebooted, there were many errors. It is now showing no sim card. Mobile network search gives error. Effectively, I can not use the mobile. Terminal emulator, X-plore etc. stopped working. Only Rom toolkit free version works and astro file manager works. Other programs are forcefully closed. Needles to say, I must replace new build.prop with new one.
Using adb I can only pull files but can not write as it is in read only mode.
adb root and adb remount works only if you are in recovery mode ? Y mobile does not have any custom recovery so when I boot in recovery mode it hangs.
Superuser has installed su in system\bin directory. But from adb shell I can use su also. It gives permission denied error. Hence I can not remount the system.
I have read similar threads and found that on some mobiles adb root or adb shell su works but on some not.
I am using Vista 32 bit with admin rights, still can not use root in adb.
Please tell me, how can I mount system read-write. I can not install root explore as google play and even internet is not working.
Please help.

OMG ruscan.calin i COULD KISS YOU! I had tried to change my OG EVO 4G's buildprop file to another phone so that I could purchase & download an incompatible Google Play app. However after I restarted the phone wouldn't start! It would boot into my rooted HTC EVO 4G Android 2.3.3 and HTC Sense 2.1 but it would get stuck on the wallpaper with just the notification bar at the top and all buttons would be frozen. However I noticed when I plugged in my phone to my computer via usb the computer recognized it. I always keep my phone with USB debugging enabled so I thought I should be good right? I have spent the last 4 hours trying to install and setup adb with no real previous experience with it. I am familiar with dos from years ago and that helped me as it's basic procedure, commands, etc. Then I found out how to install the HTC drivers which I needed and then download the Android SDK with adb that's included which many guides show easily. I started the command prompt (cmd), typed my adb devices command and hurray it showed my phone! I connected and quickly navigated to the build.prop system folder! Luckily when I changed the file I made a bak backup and left it in the same folder. Now the main issue was figuring out how to change the naming of the files which I did via usual adb commands (mv build.prop.bak build.prop). But then to no avail I couldn't get it to write due to it being a system read only folder! Arg! Then I found your post on here, above, and typed it in simply leaving out the adb push portion and replacing that with the mv file command instead and first changing the name of the bad file and then replacing the bak file as the good copy! I exited back to the adb main and unplugged my phone. Moment of truth and man was everything flashing through my head at once! I booted up and YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS, it worked! I went back into root explorer and got rid of the offending leftovers and I've learned my lesson! I just don't want to think about what would have happened if I hadn't found this post. Thank you and if anyone else makes this hug mistake let me know and maybe I can help. Moral of the story don't mess with the build.prop or any system folder unless you know what you're doing! Thanks again!
Quick Guide to Fix Android "build.prop" Issues:
1. Find and download USB drivers for your phone by model or type (HTC EVO 4G's HTC Fastboot drivers): http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe
2. Download and install Android SDK and choose adb: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
Guide: http://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-hacks/how-to-install-android-sdk-and-adb-drivers-for-htc-evo-4g/
3. Run a command prompt from the "c:/program files/android/android-sdk/platform-tools/" directory. I had to copy the command prompt to get it to open there but sometimes a right-click action will do it. The guide below will help just navigate down to "Using ADB" and skip the rest.
Guide: http://www.howtogeek.com/114667/how...y-default-move-almost-any-app-to-the-sd-card/
4. Once you open the command prompt and you're in the "c:/program files/android/android-sdk/platform-tools/" foler type "adb devices" and your device should appear. If it does move on to next step.
5. Then type adb shell and use the ls command to see directories. Then you'll need to navigate to the system folder by typing "cd system" and then type "ls" to look around in the directory (similar to "dir" in DOS). You should now see the bad build.prop file.
6. You'll need to rename the file or push a correct version. First you need to use the "adb shell" command again and then "su" and finally "mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 /system" to make the directory writable (see ruscan.calin post above for additional info).
Note: I only had to rename my build.prop as I already had my old one in the same system folder. You may have to copy the bad build.prop to your computer, edit it and then push it back to the same system directory. These directions are only for renaming files in the same folder. For the info on how to copy the file to your computer and push it back to your phone go to step *10 below or use the guide below it.
7. I already had the bad build.prop in the system directory with my old one which I had named build.prop.bak. If you have this too simply rename by changing the name first of the bad file to anything by typing "mv build.prop build.prop.bad" or similar.
8. Next rename the build.prop.bak to build.prop by typing "mv build.prop.bak build.prop". Everything should go smoothly and move onto the next step.
9. Finally, If no error messages are found, simply type "adb reboot" or "adb shell reboot" (Depending which version of ADB you have). You should be done, your phone will reboot like normal (working, lol) and everything should be working again! YAY!
*10. To copy the build.prop to your phone type "adb pull /system/build.prop c:\" and the file should be placed in the main c:/ directory on your computer. Navigate to the root (c:/) directory and then right click and "open with" the "build.prop" file using a notepad or other file editor. Then use the text editor (Notepad, etc) to change back what you originally changed to mess everything up. There is tons of stuff on the net to let you know what to fill back in depending on your phone model/type. Or it's possible to get a previous version from an old Nandroid backup or similar. Save the changed text file and make sure its named the same "build.prop" and make sure it's still in the root directory (If you're having issues on this step or just want more insight check out the guides and threads below for more help).
Guide 1: http://androidforums.com/admire-all...p-computer-not-phone-using-root-explorer.html
Guide 2: http://www.modaco.com/topic/328943-quick-guide-to-modifying-buildprop-with-adb/
Guide 3: http://forums.androidcentral.com/sp...-replaced-build-prop-phone-wont-start-up.html
*11. We've already made the directory writable in step 6 so we simply need to push the file back to the phone. If any error message appear re-do step 6 to make writable again. Otherwise push the modified file back to the phone by typing "adb push c:\build.prop /system/". Back to step 9 above! Yay!
If anyone wants to help cleanup this quick guide or make any changes feel free. I just wanted something so that if anyone else has this issue they won't have to worry or search forever to find a solution. OMG it's 2:30AM, to bed... I ride! LOL
Enjoy,
5th :highfive:
THANK YOU!!! Totally saved me today.
One thing that I noticed. After pushing the correct build.prop, I had to fully power down, then turn back on my Razr for it to load up the fixed build.prop.

You need the su binary installed as well. But with that being said, why don't you just install the Superuser.apk?
[Edit:] It's late and I'm not paying attention for some reason. Custom ROMs come pre-rooted and you have Jelly Bean installed. Perhaps there's a problem with ES File Explorer?

At the Superuser website, there are three zip files. One is Superuser, one is the su binary, and the other should be both. Not that it matters at this point.

I too used the KFU to supposedly root my KF, but when I tried to install Titanium Backup, it gave me the same error message saying that my phone did not have root privileges... I wonder if there is something not installing correctly when using KFU...
"Root" consists of the su binary, which the system uses to give the user root permissions, and Superuser.apk, which keeps a database of what programs you allow to have those permissions. With "su" only, you will still have root permission, but only at the level of command line interface and your apps will not be allowed root permissions. Superuser.apk by itself is worthless. Custom ROMS come pre-rooted so the need to re-root is usually unnecessary unless something happens to one of the above mentioned programs. The only way to be sure if/which one is missing is in recovery via the command line because custom recovery will provide temporary root access.
Code:
adb shell ls /system/xbin
...look for su
Code:
adb shell ls /system/app
...look for Superuser.apk
Superuser can be installed from within the ROM using the .apk (at least in earlier versions it was possible), or in recovery using the command line or by flashing the signed .zip from the superuser website . The su binary can only be installed while in recovery.
Of course it all can be fixed by re-flashing your custom ROM.
It may also be necessary to rename the check-rooted executable, but only if you're running the stock Amazon software.
I think that pretty much covers it.

Ok now things are getting worse I tried to turn the wifi on and it didn't work, I tried to reboot and power off the tablet but it just won't work
{Edit} I want to know that by re-flashing the ROM is there a guarantee that those problems won't happen again.
One more thing is that I deleted the ROM from my kindle I can't transfer it from my laptop because the kindle hasn't been recognized after the jelly bean and I can't downloaded because wifi isn't working so what should I do
Thanks in advance

There are never any guarantees when it comes to computers and system software, but the LIKELINESS is very high that the problem will be fixed.

Boot into recovery and "mount" your sdcard to USB. The computer should still recognize it.

I know I bored you to death and I'm really thankful for ur help but I really need the root.

Ok, well try a different ROM. If the problem persists then we can try to think of something.
I flashed the Alien droid ROM it's working fine till now but I need to know how to install an arabic keyboard please

Ok, I have a dumb question, but from where do you run the DOS commands from? (ie. what directory?)..
c:\KFU?
Right-click on your KFU folder and select properties to find the folder's path. It may be different depending on wherever you've installed it.

Thanks. but not sure i understand.
Here is what I'm attempting to do.. using the root method described here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1638452 under "Getting to fastboot mode" there are a series of command line examples that seem to start with adb.... (ex. adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/fbmode).
Under Rooting the stock software, the first step command line is "adb shell mount system"
my question is from where do I start (directory) so that when I enter these commands they work?
Or are you saying that I need to fun all these from the KFU directory? (or KFU/tools) or some other directory..
I appreciate the help and feedback..
:h my::
Wherever adb is...Right-click on that folder to find it's path so you can "cd" or change directories to it. Alternatively, you can Shift + Right-click on that folder and select something like "Open command window here".
I have been able to root my Kindle and want to get the store working.
I think I need to copy the Google Services Framework APK to the /system/app directory.
I am using ES File Explorer version 1.6.2.5.
My Kindle is version 6.3.2.
When I try to copy the file from the SD card to the /system/app directory it says unable to copy.
Thanks in advance for the help
Did you mount system as read/write?
I'm afraid I don't know what that means. I used KFU 0.9.6 to root the device. I had installed ES file explorer before I did the rooting. Does explorer need to be read/write, or is that an option for KFU? Is it an option I can change or do I have to re-install something?

ES File Explorer should have the option to do so, but I don't use it so I couldn't say for sure. If you can't figure it out, I'm sure someone around here will be able to help.
I found the Root settings in ES F E and checked the option for Root Explorer. It gave me a message that test fails option not allowed on your phone. Not sure if that is what I should be looking for or not.

Do you have an ADB connection?
The Mount File System option is greyed out.
Below that it says Mount/ , /system as writable.
Does that have to be installed after the rooting is done?
Is there another file explorer option that is better?
Should I uninstall and re-install ES?
ES is on the Kindle. I have copied the APK to the kindle and to the SDcard directory. When I am connected to the computer, my computer only has access to the sdcard directory. I can't even see the /system folder.
ES can see the folder, but can't write to it.

You still didn't answer my question. Do you have a connection with ADB? You were able to root it weren't you? You must have had an ADB connection at some point.
Sorry, Since I was trying to copy the file with out the device connected to the computer, I didn't think it mattered.
When connected to the computer, in device manager, it's Android Composite ADB Interface.
The Kindle shows up as a drive in Windows Explorer. At one point when I was doing the root, it did not show up as a drive.
If I can copy from my computer to the /system directory, that would be great, but since i don't have access to that through the computer, I was copying from the download directory on the Kindle to the /system directory on the Kindle.

You say you used the KFU to root...do you still have it available? Run it and see if it shows ADB ONLINE.
Yes, the ADB status is online when I run KFU. I also ran Super One Click and it said your device apears to be rooted.
I also installed the app, mount /system (rw/ro).
when I select mount rw, it says the system dir remounted with r/w permission.

Soooo...problem solved, right?
I wish it were that easy. Even though it says it's mounted in r/w mode, I can't get it to copy. Should I try and root it again? Could I have done something wrong? I used KFU and did root with superuser. Should I use Super One Click and unroot then try to root again? I don't remember any options for me to select wrong. Is there a PC tool that alllows you to copy directly to the /system directory? I really thought I was past the hard part. Thanks again for all the help.
Okay, since you have KFU and you have connection with ADB, press Shift then Right-click on the KFU "tools" folder and select "Open command window here". At the command prompt that opens up enter the following (omitting the comments in red, of course) ;
Code:
$ adb push /local/path/to/GoogleServicesFramework.apk /sdcard/ [COLOR=Red]<-- Replace "/local/path/to/..." with the location of GoogleServicesFramework.apk on your computer
[/COLOR]
$ adb shell
$ su [COLOR=Red]<-- If you receive an error here, you need to re-root
[/COLOR]~ # mount -o remount,rw ext4 /system [COLOR=Red]
[/COLOR]~ # mv /sdcard/GoogleServicesFramework.apk /system/app/GoogleServicesFramework.apk
~ # chmod 644 /system/app/GoogleServicesFramework.apk
~ # pm install -r /system/app/GoogleServicesFramework.apk
do the same for AccountAndSyncSettings and GoogleLoginService, reboot, then do the same for Vending.apk (I'm assuming you are trying to install the Market, right?)
Ok. I think I might see the issue. When I rooted the Kindle I did not have the apk copied to the device. It looks like there is a move command that copies the APK file from the SDcard to /sysstem/app folder. I think I need to put the apk in the proper place on the device and then un-root and then try and root it again.
Yes I am tyring to get the market running.
So you are saying there are 3 files that need to be copies? I have the file com.android.vending_3.8.15.apk, but I do not have AccountAndSyncSettings.
The more I read your reply, I'm less sure of myself. Before I root with KFU (or maybe super one click) do I need to have files copied to the Kindle? I guess I would have expected KFU to have these files, but OK if not included. Does KFU attempt to copy the framework file to the proper directory? If so, where does the files need to exist before starting?
I think your instructions here are a command line version of what I am trying to do with ES File Explorer. Is that true?

You need AccountAndSyncSettings. Are you using a tutorial for this? If so, which, one?
And yes, it is the command line version of what you're trying to accomplish with ES. It will give you more control and you'll be less likely to screw up.
Sure is rooted?
I recently back to stock firm to can check battery issues. I was using JB Hashcode very happy so far and was thinking go back again, but a short pass by the stock firmware was a really bad idea because got an update on the air (6.3.2) and lose my rooted status. I've used KFU again with no luck. Root explorer, droidwall says that i'm not rooted... So sad. Any ideas?

What does this have to do with the topic at hand?
Sorry for not getting back earlier. My weekend included getting hit by a deer. Really messed all my plans up.
I used the instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399889.
These screenshots show an option to install Google Apps, but I don't see that option when I run it. I guess I'm a little confused. Are there different instructions I should be following?
