Hard reset won't work. I select factory reset and it goes to the screen with the hat and the little refresh arrow circle and does nothing. I press home button and it goes back to previous options screen. All options do the same thing: hat screen. I need to reset phone. I put in a screen lock PW and now it won't work and let me on homescreen. Computer has no SD slot for me to DL a rom and install it that way. Please please help and thank you in advance.

Friends,
I've just joined the forum. My HTC touch has just been locked itself and I can't unlock it because I didn't set a password. I still can receive calls but can't make calls, the screen is password screen, nothing else. I can't shut it down without removing the battery.
I tried PIN, PUK, IMEI, 0000, 1234, etc but didn't work. I tried soft reset but didn't help. Tried hard reset but it didn't reset. I tried the SIM card in other phones, it works, thus, the problem is the device.
Any help will be appreciated...

You want to double check about that hard reset. I think you've probably only done a soft reset. A hard reset will reset the machine back and wipe off ALL your data and settings, including the password.
The front screen password of which you are referring to NOT any of the ones you have listed, but instead it is something you would have set when setting up the device.
Have a try with some of your usual passwords
I have tried hard reset (pushing green and red buttons at the same time pushing the reset button with its own pen) but, didn't reset (since there appeared no message on the screen like "the data will be lost"). I think those two buttons are not functional because of password. Every time I tried hard reset it has done the soft one.
thanks anyway

I'd suggest you query this in the HTC Touch forum rather than the General Forum for everything, as they have more intimate knowledge to help you
Hi there, my HTC touch just did the same today. I never set a password.
I contacted my IT guy and he mentioned the following:
Try number 1 once, and then tap unlock.
WORKED BRILLIANTLY!!
The HTC Touch does that all the time.
All you need to do is hold down the Send and End Call buttons down firmly and push the stylus up in the little hole near the usb port (Reset Button) and wait till the screen says that the phone is going to format and all data will be lost press the soft key to continue. Then when it says that press the center button and it will show Fat formatting and Rom formatting. This will erase all data on your touch so make sure you back up.
After turn on the phone and go through the set up and it should be perfectly ok.
You can do this for two reasons.
1. To reset the phone locks.
2. To repair the touch screen if it stops working.
Hope this helps. Enjoy
Dotybizz, I guess the O/P wanted a way to recover without wiping his data. However, due to the security reasons I'm sure you know about often that isn't a suitable option.
Not working

solve = hard reset
for hard reset press volume down button + center button + red reset button
A Hard Reset restores the device to its default settings - the way it was when you first purchased it and turned it on. Any programs you installed, data you entered, and settings you customized on the device will be lost. Only Windows Mobile software and other pre-installed programs will remain.
There are 2 ways to perform a Hard Reset on this device:
Menu path
* 1. From the Today Screen, go to Start>Settings.Select the System Tab and then tap on Clear Storage.
* 2. Enter in the password provided on the display of the device (should be 1234) and tap Yes.
* 3. The device will begin the Master Reset Process.
Keystroke Method
* 1. Power the device off.
* 2. Press and hold the Volume Down and Center Navigation Button at same time, do not release.
* 3. Press Power button and hold for a 3 count (quickly - say one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three). 1-2 seconds is too short, 4-5 seconds is too long.
* 4. The screen will instantly show the text to hard reset (this is a white screen with Blue text that provides the next steps to complete the Hard Reset. If you do not get this screen, power the device off and try again).
* o Warning! Your device will be set back to factory default settings. Please ensure any additional installed programs and/or user data is backed up before proceeding.

Hello helpers, I have multiple problems with my orbit, though its all probably linked and therefore one problem.
first of all the darn thing crashes all the time, but I was okay with that, all i had to do was reset then reset the date and time. However after one of these crashes I now get
" The file 'MSPOUTLOOK' cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. You might need to reinstall or restore this file."
and everything I try and do it has a new one, like contacts is " The file ':MSCONTACTS' cannot be opened................etc"
So i resigned myself to having to do a hard reset, but oh no it does not work.
Can someone at least confirm that the procedure is supposed to be, hold down the power button, then press in the reset button for 5 seconds? If that is the procedure, all that happenes is, as soon as i press in the reset button (with the power button already held down) it just does a soft reset and I'm in the same position.
It wont connect to my pc so theres no way of flashing firmware or any such action Hopefully someone can help, thanks very much, Paul.
Hard reset procedure:
- Hold down both soft keys
- Press the reset button once using the stylus
- Release the soft keys
- Press the green send button when the following message appears:
This operation will delete all your personal data, and reset all settings to manufacturer default. Press Sent to restore manufactures default, or press other keys to cancel.
Goog luck!
Sorry to be a pain, but that didn't work either, I presume by soft keys, you mean the ones with just a '-' on them just below the screen next to the jog wheel. I have a feeling there is going to be no way to sort this now. When I try what you said it just resets stright away as soon as the reset button is pressed, Thanks, Paul.
okay i did finally get it to work !!!!
Good to hear. Hope everything works fine after the hard reset!
When I start a call and put the phone to my ear the screen goes off as it should, but it does not come back on at all when taking it away.
The screen stays off and no button will do anything including the power button.... does anyone have any ideas on how to stop this or is it a faulty phone?
Thanks
That shouldn't happen especially when the phone has a built-in Proximity sensor and should wake up after you press the relevant button on the phone to do so. I would suggest you try a Hard Reset to restore the phone back to factory settings and eliminate any software bugs with the handset. If no difference after doing this, then return the device for a replacement defo.
Performing a factory reset (hard reset):
This returns your phone to the state it was in before the first time you turned it on (factory settings).
Note: Factory reset will not remove the data and files that are in your phone’s microSD card.
This will permanently delete all your data and customized settings, and will also remove any applications you've downloaded and installed. Be sure to back up any data and files you want to keep before you do a factory reset.
Performing a factory reset via settings:
The most convenient way to do a factory reset is via the phone settings.
1. From the Home screen, press MENU and then tap Settings.
2. Scroll down the screen and then tap Privacy > Factory data reset.
3. On the Factory data reset screen, tap Reset phone, and then tap Erase everything.
Performing a factory reset using phone buttons:
If you cannot turn on your phone or access the phone settings, you can still perform a factory reset by using the buttons on the phone.
1. With the phone turned off, press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then briefly press the POWER button.
2. Wait for the screen with the three Android images to appear, and then release the VOLUME DOWN button..
3. Press VOLUME DOWN to select CLEAR STORAGE, and then press POWER.
4. Press VOLUME UP to start the factory reset.
Thanks for the quick response.
But, been through that twice now - but no joy.....
any other ideas?

Unless anyone else has experienced the same issue or has a better idea, I would have it replaced as it sounds to be defective.
I need to send my phone in for repair but want to factory reset it first.
LCD cracked after a drop so I can't see ANYTHING on the screen, this is what is happening when I try reset:
1. Remove & replace battery
2. Hold volume down, then press Power whilst holding
3. Four seconds later release volume down
4. Press volume down
5. Press power button (Phone then vibrates briefly)
6. Press Volume Up
7. Wait for reboot....
Problem is that the phone doesn't seem to reboot no matter how long I wait (I never hear the start-up sound/no buttons become active.)!
I have WaveSecure installed, so I did a remote Backup to check if the phone had been reset but it hadn't, I still had data on there!! I have no performed a Remote Wipe with WaveSecure but I don't know if it deletes things like Saved Passwords from the browser!
I'm running the stock HTC 2.1.
Any help is appreciated, I really need to get the hard reset working!
Thanks!
Got it working
Not sure what I did but I kept trying it over and over and when I booted the phone and tried phoning it I realised the ringtone was back to default, so I did eventually get the hard reset working!
