[Q] AMR-WB (HD-Voice)? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi everyone. I know certain carriers support HD-Voice (AMR-WB), for example Telus/Koodo and I believe Rogers/Fido... unsure about Bell.
My question is, how can you enable AMR-WB? You can find it in the service menu but it says "OFF."
Tried searching but could not find anything on the i747. I would love to have this feature as sound quality is 100x better with it enabled (if calling another user on the same network with HD enabled handset, ie Nexus 4).

I tried everything I could think of and could not get it working. My guess is the international version you can enable just not the Canadian version.
The point is moot anyhow, the person I know who I was trying to get this working for ended up getting the S4 Mini, which *does* have HD Voice enabled (in Canada at least!).
Works great on my Nexus 5 as well

unlocked T-mobile - to - AT&T HELP PLEASE!

I bought an unlocked HTC touch pro 2 that was with T-mobile.
I have AT&T. My phone works good for calls and text messaging but the data plan does not work.
I called AT&T and they cant help me.
I called HTC..can't help me.
They both said to call T-Mobile and ask them to reset the data options because my phone is trying to read off of the T-mobile options but what that amounts to is that they just don't know what they are talking about.
My friend said this site will have the answer!
Can anyone..please..point me in the right direction on how to set up my phone so I can use the data plan for AT&T or am I screwed??
I am new at this so I don't understand the lingo but..do I need to flash a rom on my phone to kind of wipe it clean of T-Mobile and start fresh or what??
Please help me!!
Ok...I have done some digging on this site and I just wanna be clear. It looks like my phone wont work with the 3g network...and I'm ok with that...but my phone has NO internet at all and thats what I'm trying to fix.It also looks like I can fix my problem...just need a push in the right direction..please??

If you flash a new ROM, they all come with a little program that runs in the begining to provision the phone with this info... Might be easier....
ok..thanks alot..i have the internet now.
one problem..those instructions don't help me with sending or recieving picture messages. I can't follow them to get me to where it fixes that for an htc touch pro 2...any ideas?
Are you looking in the registry at your arcsoft settings?

My understanding is that the T-Mobile phone has different hardware modem. It will not work with the AT & T 3G network. Sorry, there is no way I know of to fix this. The two carriers use different technology for 3G.
However, it should work with the EDGE network on AT&T. You will need tech support from AT&T - ask them what settings need to be entered in the connection manager to get the device to work with EDGE. Your phone has settings for "T-Mobile Data" in the Comm Manager. You need to delete that and enter the AT&T settings.
Also, VERY IMPORTANT, you need to go to the phone screen (where you dial calls), bring up the options, and set it to operate ONLY on 2G networks. Otherwise I think the T-Mobile 3G modem may interfere with your EDGE data.
BTW, have you asked T-Mobile about getting a Tilt 2? This is the same phone. You could resell your unlocked T-Mobile TP2 on ebay and recoup a lot of the costs. This would be the best option, since you could then get 3G coverage.

all custom roms should have a provision cab or program. You will need to unlock your phone first. Look in the rom dev section

is EAP-SIM possible on Gnex ?

Hi,
my provider (free.fr) activated one very good feature on his internet boxes => wifi secure
this way, each mobile client who are at the same company could connect to freewifi network without needing to give a pin or a password...
So if i'm at a friends house, and have NO 3G signal, i simply start wifi and it connects to his internet box with a specific IP adress (so the ISP can know if it was the user or a mobile user who did something in case of abuse)
that's for the cool part, this all works with EAP-SIM (so the simcard does the authentification)
that's the cool part
the less cool part => this feature does not seams to be in the actual high end nexus ?!?
whereas ihpones, blackberry or some other android devices (galaxy S) does this...
there is an issue request here and some guy told that this is a RIL problem...
now question:
is this really a RIL problem ? or does a specific ROM have the EAP-SIP option in the 802.1x EAP security menu ?
it is really a shame that the galaxy nexus who is newer and better than the galaxy S, does not have that kind of feature....
I think what you are looking for was originally called UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) and now called GAN (Generic Access Network). It allows you to make and receive calls using your normal mobile number, but over Wifi. I have not looked for any phone or apps that support the technology, but I think that is what you want to look for.

Nope, he's actually talking about EAP-SIM, which is an oft-requested feature on the Android Issue Tracker. Some phones implement it (the GSII does), and it's unclear to me what's needed from the RIL/baseband to enable it. IIRC there are a few mods to enable EAP-SIM on phones which had it disabled, it might be worth looking into that and see if a dev could chime in on the issue.
I think that this link could interests you:
code.google.com/p/seek-for-android/wiki/EapSimAka
The devs need to add this to their roms...

My point is that EAP-SIM (and EAP-AKA for 3G) are used in UMA/GAN.
EAP-SIM on Galaxy Nexus
I would expect the high end Galaxy Nexus that is sold directly by Google not to have any RIL problem to communicate with the SIM, as it should be really UNLOCKED as advertised and even support different mobile networks.
I will get one and try the solution as reported on code.google.com/p/seek-for-android/wiki/EapSimAka
If as witnessed by the lack of response at code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=9329 this is not a technical problem, but a marketing and/or strategic one I will complain with Google for advertising as UNLOCKED something that it is not, and request my money back.

International HOX on AT&T

Hi all,
I've got a few quick questions that I was not able to find the direct answer to in other threads.
1) I'm using an unlocked international HOX on AT&T. I'm on firmware version 1.5 and am unable to get the phone to update. Do I have to do something out of the norm for the phone to see an update?
2) I saw the answer the other thread about Google Wallet being disabled in the States. Is there an APK or something I can load that will allow google wallet to work?
I'm coming from an Iphone 4S and this phone rocks!
Thanks for the help guys!

1. No, updates are pushed out in batches so your batch must not have received it yet.
2. If you have Google Wallet it will work just fine, it does on the Nexus.

As stated in the other threads, I'm able to download Google Wallet but it says that it is not available in my region (SE United States). I'm wondering why the Nexus and other phones are able to use Wallet on AT&T but the international/unlocked version of the One X isen't.. Strange..
In regards to the update, has anyone in the US been able to upgrade past 1.5?
Thanks all!

Yes. Do a Google search as that's how people got it working on the VZW GN early on. A word of caution. Using the hack leaves all of your GW data open to any apps you have running on your phone. I want GW but, IMHO, it's not worth the risk.
just tried to download. installs, but won't open - not yet certified on device/carrier. i'm on at&t prepaid. wonder if anything will change once at&t lte is widely sold? not a biggie for me personally, but something to think about when it comes down to deciding on which version of the one x to purchase.

i am too much of a noob at this to have truly useful info. i'm in hawaii. i bought a micro-sim off amazon and signed up for the minimal $2/day when used unlimited talk/text plan plus a small data package, because i don't talk/text very much and i'm usually at home, where i have my own wi-fi set up. so having at&t is a fallback for when i'm out and about. that being said, phone calls are clear. checking email and, for example, pulse news service via at&t has been excellent. the one x is notably faster than my acer tablet. haven't tried mms, but i think it should work pretty well; email with a downloaded file that had been pdf'd whizzed through to my laptop, as did a screen cut of photos using dolphin, though that was off home wi-fi. don't see why at&t wouldn't work as well. what i'm waiting for now is to find out if i can get a good bluetooth headset to work (voice commands and all). if so, i may move to another plan so i can use the phone more extensively and downgrade my landline service to the absolute minimum.
All right. Sent a couple of photos via mms from my net10 phone to the one x w/ home wi-fi off. Net10 is running off Sprint in Hawaii. No problemo. Everything came through fine - and quickly.
Looks to me like the big issue for some of the non-techies like me who aren't about to fumble with rooting might be accessing U.S. only apps. Hoping that won't apply to bluetooth headset usability too.

i updated the other thread re non-availability of certain apps on non-us htc one x, but for those on at&t like me with unrooted phones, i will add the info here as well. i managed to download google voice on my one x (at&t prepaid) by using dolphin hd browser to google search "google voice." when the results page came up, i clicked the link that took me to the play store and downloaded. the app opened and seems to be working fine. i was unable to download it by going to the play store directly, so the browser may add some kind of filter which makes this possible?
i can't be totally sure that all google voice options will work, because i chose to install the "lite" version - i only wanted my voicemail kicked back to my phone to avoid having to use the phone to check voicemail. (i'm on the $2/day unlimited text/talk plan and if i have to use the phone only to check a random voicemail, i'm throwing my money away.) called my one x from my landline phone and a still-in-use net10 phone and left messages. seems to work. i used my gmail account as the voicemail recipient. no google phone number.
additional info for anyone planning to use a sophisticated bluetooth headset like blueant q2. i purchased one that was at&t branded. does not function completely. the most critical features - voice commands, voice dialing - are not supported in ics, so while the blueant will pair and one could presumably answer an incoming call, the other key features are unavailable. this appears to be a function of ics and not of at&t, though i assume at&t could tweak its own branded htc one x's to overcome that? i have a jawbone era coming in maybe next week and plan to purchase one of the apps available in the play store to test both headsets at the same time. the app's developer told me he has been trying to get his app to work smoothly with ics. it already handles the blueant in other versions of android.

I'm using a Q2 also. The problem isn't ICS; it's HTC. They left "voice dialer" out of thier ROM. I found APK's from other ICS devices but they don't work. Either a dev has to create one or HTC has to include one for native voice dialing to work. In the meantime I'm using Vlingo. When you use the "in car" mode the phone listens for commands over BT after you say "hey, Vlingo." You can also dictate texts and have incoming texts read back. When you activate it on the Q2 by saying "phone command," it starts up and is listening even though the Q2 says "feature not available." It's not too battery friendly though. Not perfect, but workable.
thanks for the info. is your phone rooted?
everything i found on the net elsewhere says it's android that is the problem re voice dialing - that development was dropped even before ics. does vlingo support announcing incoming caller id on the q2? and follow through on the answer/ignore response? (really, for someone who doesn't use the call function much, i am being very picky. but sophisticated means it should do all things well.)

I'm stock. Vlingo lite is free in the Market so play around with it.
mine will hopefully be here Fri, Mon, or Tue. i didn't think to try to get on a free phone's plan, so i'm getting robbed every month paying $70 (7% student discount wow thanks) for 2 GB, 450 mins (over 400 of which i don't use), and zero text. as soon as i can, i'm switching to Red Pocket. i also thought there was some way ATT was catching people with smartphones on gophone cards and turning their data off or something, to force them to come in and get the 4G sim and pay more. if not, good deal. i stay on wifi, but if i'm out and need data and it's too slow, then i won't be happy.

[Q] Looking to Purchase a G4 and I Had Some Qeustions

Which variant should I get? I just walked out of the store (Almost bought one) and they are telling me that it's a dual SIM. I honestly like the idea but I have several requirements which my next several questions are about.
Is ROOT, Busybox and a custom recovery available for this device?
In relation to question 2, is Xposed available for this device?
Is a reliable call recorder available? I badly need this since I speak to a lot of clients and recording my conversations with them helps me when I forget something that I discuss with them.
Is there an available kernel that will allow me to tweak the volume of the headset (much like Boeffla for those who have experience in this)?
Looking forward to your answers mates! Thanks!
Edit1 - How do I edit the title? Spelling mistake
1. the one which offers warranty in your country. is warranty available for both variants where you are ?
where i am there is only the dual sim and its a variant on dual sims available elsewhere. dual sim means no wireless charging possible at all. dual sim means only one sim can be used at a time because G4 dual sim is a dual standby not dual active ie it only has one radio and not two. So the other sim goes into standby if you use it all that is.
There is another point, whether you have 4g service in your country or not and whether it can support voice and data at the same time on one sim. Where i am 4g cannot (no VoLTE from the carrier) only 3g can. so if on 3g data, and get a call then i get the call and data stops but if i'm on 4g data then the caller gets a busy signal if using data at the time they called. Conversely if i get the call then i cannot browse the net while on the call (!)
This is where dual sim comes in. they can call the voice number (set up to forward to the other sim) and the data stops otherwise can continue to enjoy data at 4g speed.
In effect this means if you want to use 4g you need a second sim due to lack of VoLTE. otherwise put up with the slower speed of 3G and use just one sim.
2. root can be injected, there is no recovery available as bootloader unlock is not yet available for any variant besides the euro h815.
3. yes but its not completely stable. some modules work others don't. i'd give this some more time.
4. there is one in the stock but otherwise try ACR, it works quite well for me with another device.
5. not yet. this will only happen when botloader unlock becomes more widespread.

1. I'm unsure. I'd have to go back to the store and ask. I beleive(from experience) you cannot use voice and data at the same time on my carrier(s).
2. Read about that a bit, and from my understanding, the dual SIM is the H818, which I haven't found a root for. (This is honestly most likely a dealbreaker for me) But should I be expecting a reliable root and bootloader unlock soon?
3. I think this is applicable for all Xposed for 5.x and above no?
4. That's pretty neat that LG has one in built. I may not need root if this is the case. I'd have to check which applications use root and see if they are absolutely necessary.
5. Sounds good.
Quick question that I forgot to ask about though, I use AirDroid to manage, send and delete SMS from my device as it's a lot easier to do this on a computer screen. When I updated to KK/LP on my device, a whole plethora of problems arose such as not being able to delete/send SMS if an application was not the default SMS app.
In addition, I use Avast Anti Theft which heavily relies on SMS Commands. Is it still the case today?
Sincerely appreciate the well informed response mate

Samsung has disabled VoLTE in every tablet that supports it, tab s3, s4, s6 and s7. It won't comment on this. I suggest contacting Samsung and asking for an update to address this issue. I understand there is a complex hack to accomplish this, but it involves editing a binary file.
If Samsung won't do it, maybe the carrier firmware can enable VoLTE?
AT&T says its Tab S4 variant will continue to work after their 3G shutdown.
Tab S4 (SM-T837A) is listed in their compatible devices:
https://www.att.com/idpassets/images/support/wireless/Devices-Working-on-ATT-Network.pdf
Maybe this means VoLTE is enabled for calling? Or they might mean it will keep working but only for data LTE.
There is no carrier tab s4 that will work for calls, and I don't think sms either! The carriers have a system in which you can have data/talk/text on a samsung Tab 3,4,5,6,7,8 if you also have a samsung phone.
Samsung also has a setting you can enable to make calls on your tablet if you also have a phone, if both devices are logged into your Samsung account. No security flaw there! Not sure if the phone must be Samsung too, but it would seem so!
I'm not going to say what I think about a manufacturer going out of its way to reverse a setting, intentionally crippling its flagship products, so customers need to purchase more stuff to obtain the expected functionality!
I did write to the CEO of Samsung Electronics, Co., Ltd.. I asked for a firmware update to enable VoLTE in the Tab S series beginning with the S3.
Earlier Tab S don't have compatible hardware. If you clear your browser data, so no one can tell you're a hacker, and google 'Samsung investor relations', you can find his name and address.
I'm not going to dox him here. But if anyone wants to write him, please be very civil, clean, upright, and simply ask for an update, followed by, "I only ask for Samsung to live up to its reputation! I think my request is more than reasonable! Thank you for taking your valuable time to read my message. Best Regards, name"
Don't use spinglish--words and phrases that mean one thing implied to mean something else. And example in reverse is when Dell dubbed one of its laptops exploding into flames, 'a thermal event'!
Just be direct, brief, polite and honest.
Samsung chat says:
Hi, thank you for contacting Samsung Care. I’m D-- ....
... It will be updated in coming update. You will receive a notification on your tablet once it got updated.
‎8:36 PM When do you think the update will be?
‎8:37 PM Profile SEA Digital Messaging We don't have the exact information. Hope it will update will release in couple of weeks.
‎8:38 PM This is due to the 3G shutdown? That will work then, with the update I'll be able to download a phone app from the app store?
Thank you
‎8:38 PM Profile SEA Digital Messaging It is not about the 3G shutdown, the feature is not available on the tablet. Carrier have not permitted to use this feature on Samsung tablet. You can use caling feature on third party applications like WhatsApp ETC.
‎8:41 PM ok yes. Then I will wait for the update. Is this official it will be updated?
the tablet will be updated to download a phone app?
‎8:42 PM Profile SEA Digital Messaging Yes it will be official once the Update released you will get notification on your screen.
Once you get the Update it will update automatically to make the calls.
‎8:44 PM ok thank you D

So maybe it'll be soon I'm hoping to use VoLTE for my tablet soon. Otherwise Singapore firmware might allow VoLTE calls currently? Why is that? I can't download or install or side-load any phone app currently.
edit update: I flashed to t-mobile using odin and that lets me send and receive texts just fine using messenger app. I use tello so I can place outbound calls over wifi too, so I can just use google voice for any other phone call inbound. I've heard other versions outside usa might be able to place calls though?? Suppose we'll get an update here soon anyway hopefully.

There will be convoluted ways to get data/talk/text on the Tab S models without adding VoLTE compatibility.

Like calling on other devices, if both a phone and tablet are logged in to your Samsung account, you can use your tablet for Data/talk/txt, because it's actually using the phone.
