Freegee or flash recovery myself? - LG Optimus G Pro

What's the difference between these two methods? Is there any difference at all? Or is it just preference?

Simple question can't get a simple answer? Alright guess I'll just dive into whichever at random

The benefit to using the FreeGee installed recovery is that it is definitely a Loki-agnostic recovery. This means that you can flash any ROM built for our phone without having to confirm that it has been patched with Loki. Shellnut's recovery included with FreeGee automatically detects the presence of a Loki patch. If it's already been applied to a ROM it will not run Loki, but if it has not been applied it will patch it as part of the flashing process.
With that said, I'm not sure if any of the other Recoveries floating around have the auto-Loki feature baked in. For me, it was a matter of safety to go with the FreeGee recovery.
Had I seen this earlier I would have responded.

Thank you sir!! Much appreciated

Rom manager with cm10?

Ok so rom manager came pre installed on cm10. I never used it on my old phone because of bricking stories. Question is, is it being used for ota updates for cm10? And is it safe for me to install cwm touch from it?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
Rom Manager and this phone are not a conversation that is even taking place. But as far as the question CM is going back to their own "ota" system and while I am sure CM9 will get it as well CM10 will definitly have ut.
As far as this phone since we are not official yet I wouldn't worry about either at this time. Your updates are here.
Do not install CWM Touch recovery!!! That's asking for a brick. We have TWRP if you want a touch recovery. Aroma packages also give you a customizable touch interface for installing .

Thanks.. that's the answer I was looking for. Is there a flashable zip for the twrp. Recovery? And has it been used with cm10 before?

This phone has the recovery packed in the kernel, so you will be looking for a kernel+twrp or kernel+cwm. The recovery will change everytime you flash a different rom or kernel that has a different recovery packed with it. Some people, like me, use el26+cwm for recovery related things, such as wiping, flashing and backing up/restoring. However if you go this route you will need to locate an ics or jb kernel to flash to boot to your rom, if you aren't flashing a rom. You will need to flash a compatible kernel either before making a backup or after restoring a backup to make it bootable. I typically flash the kernel then do the backup so I don't forget to flash it after a restore.
We are legion, for we are many.

What did I do wrong?

While trying to flash to the latest slim bean beta 4 I believe I bricked my device. It came up with something about secure bit being disabled. Lucky I was able to enter download mode and flash a Telcel ROM to make my phone work. I really want to run something other than this stock ROM. This is the first time anything like this has happened during a flash that I've done on any device.
Please help!

Secure boot error. Cause: boot unlock, so boot successful.
It's supposed to say that. That's how Loki works. I advise you to do a little more reading that way you don't freak out and do something hasty. Also always make sure you read the op carefully. Reroot your phone and try again.

I read the OP, I didn't really see anything about Loki. All I did was root, then install CWM, then flash the Slim ROM. What didn't I do right?
Sent from my LG-E980h using Tapatalk 2
You really didn't do anything wrong. You supposed to wait for the rom to boot though after flashing. I say give it 5 minutes.

The ROM never booted. I flashed the ROM, them gapps, then modem, them hit reboot in CWM. That's when I get the error

It doesn't sound like you used Loki..
Root device then go to play store and download
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=edu.shell.freegee_free
Make sure to select yes on security unlock and I would pick cwm recovery to avoid touch screen issues with twrp.

Did you install cwm thorough freegee? If so its auto lokified. And did you wipe data, cache, dalvik and format system? I do that every time with very rare boot issues. Rom posts will only mention Loki if they have lokified it themselves, youre expected to have read all about loki in the recovery threads.

Just remember after you root your device you must install recovery by using the app Freegee from Play store and select yes to security unlock.
Only flash ROMs made for a 980.

Well there's my problem. I didn't know that it was the recovery.
I used this recovery
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2284298
Clockworkmod Recovery v6.0.2.8 v1 for Optimus G Pro
which apparently doesn't support Loki (still don't know what that means, but I guess its bad ). Maybe I'll order an external battery charger and try it again with the Loki-fied recovery.
Thanks for the help!

The boot loader is locked so there is a security. Loki is what's used to bypass the locked boot loader.
You must use Freegee to install a recovery that had Loki built in that way you can install ROMs because the recovery will always bypass the locked boot loader cause its using Loki.
The app is great and I suggest buying the donate version. I also recommend freegee to backup your els.
Also I suggest selecting cwm as the recovery when freegee asks.

Yes you can. Make sure to wipe data..after freegee you will start seeing a quick screen that shows up on reboot about bootloader security unlock success or something like that..this is normal.
Again only ROMs in this development section and for the E980

[Q] Cant boot into recovery

Help me please. I am on a stock rooted kitkat rom. I tried to update my TWRP recovery to 2.7. Now I cant boot into recovery at all. The only way I can boot my phone up is by going into download mode and then cancelling it. I have tried CWM thru Rom Manager. I have tried different versions of TWRP, and Philz thru flashify. everything says it flashes correctly but I cant get to recovery. I am on a Tmobile Note 3 with 4.3 bootloader and a stock, deodexed rooted rom.
Try to flash the recovery with odin

Twrp 2.7 is meant for the 4.4 bootloader. This could be why you can't get in.
Use twrp 2.6 series in order to use with 4.3
Edit: I just re-read your post. You are using the 4.3 bootloader and running a dehisces 4.4 ROM? The above still stands, just want to know.

[Q] Clueless at the moment

Ive looked thru the forums i apologize if i missed it. Ive got a sprint samsung galaxy note 2 running 4.3 ive tried to root and install a custom recovery using the toolkit, but it doesnt seem to take the custom recovery. if anybody could please help me.
I haven't tried rooting since 4.1.2, but I used ToolKit to root and it installed a custom recovery. From there, I just flashed the recovery I preferred to use. Maybe be worth while try using ToolKit. I believe there is an option to just install new recovery.

So i know ive gotta flash one of these but which one? Sprint Samsung galaxy note 2 4.3
which ever one you prefer first. I use TWRP. Some use Philz, which is based on TWRP. From what I've read, it may be good idea to go with Philz over TWRP when and after converting to Android 4.3; something about TWRP not backing up or restoring correctly. Obviously there is still ClockWorkMod (CWM). I can't attest to it because I haven't used it in over two years.
Odin doesn't work either.....I've been having the same problem. Been wanting to root my note 2 for some time now but to no avail.

try using odin3 v3.07 to flash philz 6.07.9 that works for me

Haven't had the chance to yet.

Root and your unlocked bootloader...

You're unlocked, stop using root exploits. Flash a recovery, flash a SU.zip, and get permanent root access.

i may suggest it to use!...

but its your Wish If you want TWRP it if you want CWM then use philz cwm as i am using its awesome andworks well
This is not a guide, just a post to clue some people in. Use whatever recovery you want. With that being said, I don't think Philz has been updated to work on KK. Besides, take a look at that TWRP I posted, it has some pretty cool features.
Sent from my HTC6525LVW using Tapatalk
Oh okay. And I am using philz cwm on my KitKat RAZR M 4.4.4 it works well. And yeh maybe twrp is better but its depending upon you what you want to use
