Rom manager with cm10? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Ok so rom manager came pre installed on cm10. I never used it on my old phone because of bricking stories. Question is, is it being used for ota updates for cm10? And is it safe for me to install cwm touch from it?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2

Rom Manager and this phone are not a conversation that is even taking place. But as far as the question CM is going back to their own "ota" system and while I am sure CM9 will get it as well CM10 will definitly have ut.
As far as this phone since we are not official yet I wouldn't worry about either at this time. Your updates are here.

Do not install CWM Touch recovery!!! That's asking for a brick. We have TWRP if you want a touch recovery. Aroma packages also give you a customizable touch interface for installing .

Thanks.. that's the answer I was looking for. Is there a flashable zip for the twrp. Recovery? And has it been used with cm10 before?

This phone has the recovery packed in the kernel, so you will be looking for a kernel+twrp or kernel+cwm. The recovery will change everytime you flash a different rom or kernel that has a different recovery packed with it. Some people, like me, use el26+cwm for recovery related things, such as wiping, flashing and backing up/restoring. However if you go this route you will need to locate an ics or jb kernel to flash to boot to your rom, if you aren't flashing a rom. You will need to flash a compatible kernel either before making a backup or after restoring a backup to make it bootable. I typically flash the kernel then do the backup so I don't forget to flash it after a restore.
We are legion, for we are many.

Flashing ICS

Currently I am running Calkulins 3.0 and now I want to try out Calkulins ICS so can someone explain the steps on what I should do to flash that ICS cause I don't want to brick my phone. Do I just flash like a normal ROM or should I just take different steps? Please help me out!!
Just mobile odin el26+cwm kernel and boot into recovery. Flash Calkulins format all and flash ROM.

You could find mobile Odin on the market. Its an app that cost 5 bucks and somewhere here on xda for free I think
Edit: Its a portable version of Odin that you used to root and flash your phone.

What he said^^^. There is a light version on xda for free. It will do the job. App is a must for any ROM flasher.

You can also just use the Auto Root sticky in development (Option C) to install EL26+CWM
I know its safe go back to gb using odin one click. Is it safe to go back to gb by odining el 26 kernel then wiping then flashING gb Rom?

Well they're only giving you pieces of information. If you're on Calkins 3.0 I have to assume that you are familiar with cwm rogue and most probably auto root or regular Odin. Its my suggestion that if you're not familiar with regular Odin (go to xda search bar and put in a search for Odin v1.85 and Odin one click el29 root and Odin el26 root) that you get familiar with it and download at least those three versions to your pc. It will save your a$$ in a pinch. Also you should have a copy of the latest auto root program. Put in a search on xda or head over to the developers section and skim through the first 5 pages. You're guaranteed to find them there. Now flashing to ICS isn't the hard part. Its getting back to el29 that causes all the bricks. -- 2Things. Go over to the general E4GT section and read the first thread. "How not to brick your E4GT". Also by all things in the universe that is good stay away from CM9 and any CWM touch kernels and roms. Both have been linked to bricks. Bad stuff there. Now that you have the programs you need on you're pc and you're a little more educated about ICS, I SUGGEST CALKINS ICS2.v1.4 Fd02. It had a stock kernel (safe) repacked with the same version of CWM that you already have on calks 3.0. Plus everything works and its very stable. All you need to do I'd down load Calkins format all and the ROM and put it on you sd card. Then go into recovery and wipe cashe then wipe dalvik cashe then go to mounts and storage and wipe your internal sd. Make sure to make back ups before hands so you don't lose any data. Now go to install zip and run the format all. When it is done go back to install zip and install ICS! LET IT REBOOT AND ENJOY. ALSO GOOD IDEA TO DOWNLOAD APP BACKUP AND CONTACT BACKUP OFF THE MARKET. BOTH ARE FREE AND WILL ALLOW YOU TO REINSTALL almos t all YOUR APPS AND CONTACTS AFTER YOU FLASH. Make sure you read all the instructions on how to use Odin as well. Hope this was a little helpful.
El26 with cwm is the latest safe kernel to flash with. El29 and later have rogue repacks and are not safe to use to flash from ICS to GB. I have flashed from ics to ics using fd02, fb21, and a few others with no issues(doesn't mean its safe). Only use el26 with official cwm to be safe.
Edit: especially when flashing to/from AOKP/CM9/AOSP.

Your problem was having the stock kernal to do the flash. Best thing to do know is to flash a el26 CWM kernal using Odin and then reflashing the whole rom set up again.

I don't think it is possible to have the stock kernel and have rouge recovery. That would mean that you must of had a custom kernal which had included rouge recovery. If you mean you had stock kernel to being with you then you flashed the new rom using androids stock recovery which almost always fails when installing a new rom. The kernel I mentioned , EL26 CWM can be found here, flash it using odin and then reflash your whole rom setup. When you double click the file, it will self extract and a file should appear. That is the file you flash using odin in the PDA slot.
The file I flashed in odin was a rooted el.29 file then I used a tool that installed the el.29 rogue recovery... so I'm confused why a .29 rom won't install over a .29 base?
Sent from my XT912 using Tapatalk 2
Just put the phone back into download mode Odin el.29 rom that you can find in development section then from there just redo it.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
I have already odin back to rooted el.29 but what I'm wondering is why would it change anything? It's already soft bricked once so how would it change this time? Should I be on .26 or .29 to flash a rom?

OK So sounds like (not too sure though) that you used sfhub's Autoroot package to root and add EL29+CWM+Rogue is that right?
Solution to get you back to a working EL29 stock (but rooted) running phone.
Power off the phone.
Go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101 download the Download the EL29 full restore One-Click self-extractor and extract the file somewhere.
[Also make sure you downloaded and installed the Samsung drivers from this post, have a GOOD USB cable and that the phone is charged at least 50%]
Then start the file you downloaded: SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED-OneClick.exe
The power on your phone while holding the Volume Down button till you get the confirmation screen and press volume up to accept and enter Download mode.
Connect your phone to the PC and it should show up on some COM port (doesn't matter which one) in the Odin tool.
Press start adn wait till all is done. You will then have a working stock rooted phone.
Then take some time and read through all the stickies and tutorials in this section. Read especially the 'how not to brick' ones!
This phone is very different from the HTCs and Motorolas in how the system(s) is partitioned and how the recovery works.
Then take some more time and read a little more or you will surely turn the phone into an expensive fishing lure.
If you want to flash the FF18 (actual leak build) sfhub has a one click for that too! Safest way to go. And you can use his Autoroot package to add Agat's safe ICS kernel.
Welcome to the E4GT just be careful and you'll have more fun.
By the way Qbking77's videos are SUPER if you are new to this phone!
Yes I'm on stock rooted el.29 now

Sooooo, is it worth keeping or should i go through the trouble of installing clockwork.
And if i use Odin lite and flash the gb kernal with clockwork i can them boot into recovery and flash whatever i want?
And one more thing. I have a usb jig coming in the mail. If i am going to be doing all that should i wait till it comes in in case i need it or is it simple enough that i shouldn't worry.

Agat recovery is good for touchwiz based roms. I have flashed many ICS roms and zips using this recovery.
Regarding your questions if you want to flash a new rom follow the instructions in the OP of that rom, don't over complicate things. I use el26 recovery to flash roms. I load that using Odin from PC.
Its good to remember kernel and recovery are combined with this phone. Keep agat. If you want to go to jellybean get el26 kernel by chris41g. Also remember you will have a new kernel and recovery after you flash something.

AFAIK the clockwork doesn't depend on whether you are on aosp or else.
I guess the stability is about the same but I'd prefer TWRP because it's more userfriendly and has more features.
And as I never had emulated sdcard issues, i can't tell u anything about that.

I used CWM for years and started having problems with it when I started flashing 4.2. CWM had some problems flashing the roms correctly and with the multiple profile storage and TWRP was a little ahead of them when it came to fixing those problems. So I jumped to TWRP and never looked back. I prefer it for serveral reasons. The interface is more friendly, backing up and restoring roms are a bit faster and the overall fetures will keep me with TWRP.

What's the correct method to flash another Rom?

I'm on ICS 4.0.4 just Rooted last night with custom recovery. So I just dl what JB Rom I want and flash in recovery like my HTC Evo Lte?
All this reading has got me confused as to what to do. Plus this being my first Samsung device doesn't help any.
Thanks for the help

Just follow the instructions for the specific Rom you want. All roms have their flashing instructions And the jb ones are more specific too. Those are listen in the thread for that Rom as well.

You need to do a full restore one click to GB27 full root restore which is jelly bean. Something in the system has to be formatted before you flash a custom jelly bean ROM.

You need to do the one that wipes data since you're going from ics to jb. It's going to delete whatever you have on the internal sd so back up the files. After you do that then you can flash a jb Rom on it. I'm on my phone right now so I can't really link you to the thread easily. Look for the jb roms they should have links to all you need to set up a jb Rom.

It is hard to fully brick, but it can happen. Take your time and read as much as possible.. When I got my first Android device, Samsung Captivate, I spent the better part of 3 weeks reading before I even attempted root and another full day of reading for installation of a custom ROM. You always have to be prepared to have a paper weight on your hands. You can't panic if you get stuck in a bootloop. Rule of thumb, 95% of the time if it still turns on, it can be fixed. What I do now is read as much as possible before I even get the device. I was reading and researching for 4 days before I got my S4 had it rooted and ROMd in an hour after I got it.

One of the main reasons why I like HTC devices because when you flash the ROM the kernel is flashed at the same time if yr S-Off were this phone you have to flash the kernel separate from the rom and then you have to use ClockworkMod recovery which I don't care for. I prefer TeamWin recovery. But my wife's GS3 is similar to htc devices download the Rom and flash and it has TeamWin recovery. But I got this phone to flip so I'm not going to keep it but who knows.
