:cyclops:After a long time keeping you guys waiting, (sorry):cyclops:
I HAVE A RELEASE!!!
Special thanks to Gabrial Destruir for the Nooter Project. It is amazing and none of this would be possible without it. My intention with this is not to rival Touchnooter. My intention is simply to make it better.
Without further delay, my mod:
My mod is aimed at providing a smooth NST experience with minimal bloat. It is a customized version of Touchnooter and is installed the same way. I have removed many things from Touchnooter that just seem to cause problems, and I have added things to this that I think would work better on the Nook Touch than things that are in Touchnooter. But, It is just a pre-alpha, as I have lost my NST and am unable to test this out myself, so I don't know what this is going to be like. It will probably be buggy. That's why i need you guys here at the forum to test this out.
PLEASE NOTE: I have lost my nook, so I don't know if it works. My intention is for you guys at the forum to test it out and tell me.
In future releases i will include a changelog. I did not here, as It is the first release and I want to see what you think of it before I make more changes to it.
Download: It's in my Dropbox,

Changelog
Reserved for changelog.
Tried it on a rooted nst and unrooted ng and booth are hanging on start screen- I need to use touch formatter on both
Neither of those should be used for this. This is for unrooted NST.

You could have then said that in the original post that it was for a regular Nook Simple Touch without the glowlight.
If it is based off TouchNooter, then can you say what you changed and added and took away? I have used TouchNooter and it is running perfectly fine and it doesn't seem to slow down my nook touch at all.
Is it for nook touch 1.1 or 1.2.1 too?
I have no Nook to test this. Thought I might just point that out.
Changes to Touchnooter:
Added Smart Launcher
Removed ADW
Removed the annoying help widget.
Removed Android Market.
Removed YouTube
I added some other stuff but I had to hard reset my laptop the other day, and I lost my changes list. I am looking for them now.

I am working on making a second build now. It will be uploaded in the same DropBox folder.

This works on anything compatible with the latest Touchnooter.
Please tell me that you are testing it with your personal nook first, I don't want anyone else to get their nooks bricked due to you not testing it first.

Read the 1st post. It says that I don't test it. My NST has disappeared. This is a work in progress. Believe me, I would love to test this, but again, I have no nook at the moment to test it on, I am going to look into getting a new one just for this, then I will test it.
Edit:
Found Nook, but it's bricked >_< (Not from this, from nook manager) I'll have to take a look at it.
Anyway, does this run well?
Got nook replaced. I will continue development of this.

How about nsg? Having one on the way to replace nst
This project is over as of now. I no longer have the device and have more important things to sorry about than custom Roms for a device without a color screen.

Just downloaded, and now whenever I open a thread it opens on the first page!
Edit: now last page.
I know there's a paid version which includes options for which page to open on as default. But to me it's not cool to take this functionality away from the free users or at least don't downgrade our experience with this I assume vastly unpopular default.
Edit: last page is definitely an improvement over first but why take away this feature from free users? To me this just says you can't come up with enough new features to sell your product to paying customers.
Needless to say I'm installing and restoring a backup of the old version.
Edit: yep, I'm still rolled back.
Also the market won't open your page for me to lower my 5 stars, but when it does *shakes fist*
Edit: the page opened, & I lowered my rating.

Agreed. The last update remove some features and functionality and now there is no free version in the market. Guess I will restore an older version.

I understand that the paid app had more features, but I don't like out that the free version is a downgraded version of the previous (also free) version.
I don't mind paying for android apps, I often do and I even donate voluntarily to xda members, but the problem here is that I don't like the principle of removing features to get people to buy the paid version...

exactly. thats just bad. its enough to make me NOT pay for the full version just based on principle there.
EDIT: The update (2.0) is now live in the market, but you might want to BEWARE, read my comments below. These "bugs" I mention have turned out to be "features" of 2.0 so they will break what I listed. Update at your own risk. For me and the way I use Dropbox, the new pretty UI was definitely not worth the lost functionality. Fortunately I came across another Beta version (1296) that brings all the goodness of the UI update without breaking any of the good stuff the old version had! New file below
I just received a Dropbox Pre-release Update that I thought I'd share with the good peeps of XDA. (Posted this in Android Apps too, but thought I should take care of my E4GT peeps directly.)
Some nice updates coming down the pipe, but we get to play with it now. (Make sure you have a backup of your folder and previous DB setup.)
From the email:
Here's the stuff we've added:
• Favorites: quick offline access to files
• Bulk upload photos and videos
• Access all file and folder actions with just one tap
• Improved gallery view
• Upload from and export to your phone's memory
• Rename files and folders
• Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) improvements
• Numerous bug fixes and stability improvements
EDIT: Some nice UI changes, but some bugs in this as well:
The sdcard/Dropbox file is moved to sdcard/Android/data/com.dropbox.android/files/scratch and will no longer play nice with wallpapers, ringtones, etc.
You now add files as Favorites to make them available offline, but there is currently no way to make folders favorites, so you would have to mark each file you want to use offline
No longer an indicator showing whether a file is already downloaded or not
Added bulk upload, but still no bulk download
Lost the updating/downloading notification on the status bar, now we don't know when the files finished uploading/downloading
And here's the apk. If you still want to give it a go. And the Dropbox Forum discussion if you want to join in.

Based on the DB forums, looks like a different update and it's easier to work on iOS with it's limited number of variables (screen sizes, versions, vendor UI's, etc.) compared to Android. So it's not surprising that it generally takes development longer for Android apps and updates.

Not at all. In fact if you go to the forum page I linked in the OP, you can find the link for the apk there as well.
I don't understand how they still don't have two way syncing on the native app, but look on the market and you can find apps that do this just fine.

No idea, I haven't seen that one and nothing came up with Dropbox1306 when I searched, so probably not. As far as I can tell by the DB forum, this just came out today to beta testers. I only received it in my email about 30 minutes before I posted it so I think it is fairly new. Do you have a link to this "unreleased beta" that you are talking about? It would be pretty easy to tell if it's the same.

I think I just answered my own question, as I realized my "beta" file is called Dropbox1296... Anyhoo, here it is: http://db.tt/fOjjMX2q (and it's awesome).
But if this new one is an update of that^, (and, number-wise, it seems like it must be) then I'm switching, as Dropbox just gets better and better with every update.

If you give the one I posted a go, make a nandroid first and copy your sdcard/Dropbox folder to your PC because the latest removes it and moves the files into a Data folder tree. I still haven't received a good answer as to why. Wouldn't be a big deal, but I think it screws up the ability for the phone to recognize the files for media purposes (i.e. ringtones, wallpapers, etc.) Check out the forum link I posted and you can get a feel for what's going on.

Hey buddy:
*Thanks for the link in the OP to the Forum about the whole thing: after trying both, and realizing what you'd be giving up with either 2.0 or 1306, I'd have to agree with you....
1296 is where it's at.
I might make the suggestion that anyone who goes this route should definitely turn off automatic updates in the Market.
(I've accidentally done this before: I'll find a beta of something that I really like, and then forget the fact that it is a beta, then update it through the market: thus losing the functionality I had loved from the beta version.)
Anyway, thanks for the option: if I hadn't read up on it, I'd have just blindly updated it, just because of the version number.

No problem. The only issue or "enhancement" with 1296 is this new "feature" they have for downloading files. No more long pressand automatically into the appropriate folder. Now it's "download"and then select a location. But at least we keep the /sdcard/Dropbox root folder in this version!
If Dropbox actually listens to its community, those "enhancements" should be dealt with in the next update.

Can I ask why not? I get not wanting to go as far as custom roms, but with adblockers and access to the system and data partitions, you can do quite a bit without having to go for a full rom.
Well I'm just comfortable with touchwiz and honestly the last phone I had I thought I knew what doing and bricked. So I lost the courage just getting into all this so I'm a newbie...
:'( but I see all the customizations and would love to have them so I just wanted to take the easy way out and get some apks that would work with my stock...

Best way to customize your unrooted phone is probaly thru your launcher of choice... there are some that can be customized more than others, basically what your looking for is different themes/icons which you can find for free or buy in the play store.

Have to agree with lickarock. There's still quite a lot you can do without going all out like full ROMs. If you simply root your phone and load SuperSU (SuperUser), you can load something like ES File Explorer and do simple installs of apk files through there. You really don't have to worry about bricking your phone in that situation.
While I do load different roms on my N2, like you, I just wanted to get blacked out apps also. I'm running blacked out Gmail and Facebook currently, which I loaded through ESFE. Just make sure you uninstall the original apps then install the apks through ESFE and reboot. Everythings running smooth on my phone.
I've had a few scares loading different ROMs where my phone wouldn't boot up and I thought I maybe bricked my phone.......luckily I got it back up and running. Battery pulls suck.......lol
Just be sure to read through all the posts that you find which interest you. Typically, people post issues they are having and possible fixes. If you want to run different roms or something later, just be sure your phone is running the correct specs for it, ie....your baseband version is MA7 vs MC2, not all roms are compatible with multiple versions.

If you choose not to root, there are still several ways to have a highly customized phone.
Personally, I am a fan of rooting. I have rooted every android phone I have had except my Note 2. Long story short, I bought my Note 2 through my business and cannot afford to run into any headaches that can sometimes pop up even to the most experienced flasher. I will say the Note 2 is also the first android phone that I haven't felt the need to root for increased performance. CPU, RAM, Battery life, this phone has all three for days.
I created a thread dedicated to creating a custom look without root. And in many ways this is the most custom phone I've ever had.

I have the same experience. Updating a 4.2.2 ROM appears to have no ill effects.
The only thing I would add is TB can't backup - it complains about insufficient free space, although there is plenty.
The main issue is lack of root and the fact that the SuperSU .zip fails to flash on the Xoom.
edit: the solution to SuperSU .zip fail is to replace the "update-binary" and can be found in the SuperSU XDA thread.
I have Root
Using BaNkS Core Gapps I have 47.7MB free System.
I simply flashed ROM,Gapps and amended SuperSU in TWRP and the update goes smoothly.

Yeah I tried this earlier and it worked, though didn't actually see that post, was trying several things to get root working and tried this

Flash this for root: http://d-h.st/hk1
Working here. A few graphics glitches, and missing the overclock options from the last 4.2.2 build, but otherwise seems to be stable. Great work!

Also the charging LED seems to be absent, and the docking sound. Daydream is kind of finicky when docked.

Got it up and running. Will test it. It does install and boot. Thank you.

4.3 issue with TB is well known, you have to change the path of the TB directory to "legacy", I'm guessing yours is on "0").

No, it is on the external SD card. No problems with 4.3 using a similar setup on another device.

Currently it is a pure Android build so it contains no other features that aren't available in stock Android system. I will add them back in future builds.
Currently the most noticeable problem is the graphic glitches showing on launching apps, dialogs and menus. I heard from other developers that it is related to the system base we used to create our builds. I will start from another base to see if it fixes the problem. After solving the problem I will start merging changes from my 4.2 builds.

Understand completely. After using for a few hours, this is definitely a step forward from 4.2.x. Noticeable improvements in responsiveness (must be the extra butter) and overall performance. Given that this hardware is 2 and a half years old, it's doing pretty well.

Anyone having issues with the Xoom being non responsive after sleeping? Had to reboot a few times as it wouldn't wake after sleeping.

Does anyone know if theXoom would benefit from Trim. It has lagged before.

From my personal experience, yes. I've been using the lag fix app over the past month and it has been as noticeable change in performance (not as much as 4.3 itself, but noticeable). The first TRIM lasted about 2 weeks, and when it felt slower I ran it again. Hoping that Google's baked in TRIM will produce similar results on a ongoing basis.

Any chance we can see some unofficial cm10.2 built off of this down the road?
Also, I have the same question as extremetempz. The galaxy players got a huge performance boost when the Deva there bumped the kernel up to Linux 3.0 from 2.6

Look I've been around xda for a long time and am not stranger to root, hacking modding whatever. But this is the first nexus device I've own so the newest android OS is not a problem at least for now. And to boot this little guy is a beast with wings! So even performance is no problem. And also I made sure to buy one long after the reports of touch screen problems so I don't have no issues. So without any insults and cyber bullying kindly give your take on the matter. What the benefits at this point?

Yup, that's my number one reason. First thing I did when I got this was root it.
Titanium Backup is nice too, saves some set-up time by installing some applications from my previous tablet.

Faster ROMS, custom kernels for speed and battery save. As mentioned Ada way is great. Kicking system apps I don't need or use.
That said, even if for some reason some device came perfect I would still root because I can.

Those are some fine points guys thank you.
Anyone else?

Simple. To make it simpler and better!
Xposed Framework definitely fun to play around with. Opens your eyes on new possibilities without flashing different ROMs, if you're like me and like a specific ROM / stock.
Mainly to satisfy the tweaking itch. For me, it's compulsive on Android devices nowadays. Some of the big reasons include:
AFWall+
AdAway
Greenify
Nandroid backups
Custom ROMs
Custom kernels
OpenPDroid
Backup of SMS/MMS & apps
Xposed
With KitKat....apps monitoring the battery (gsam battery, betterbatterystat, etc) need root now
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
App ops is the reason I rooted. It disappeared with 4.4.2 and can only be retrieved with root now.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
I built on @locusto03's list:
AFWall+ (privacy, security)
AdAway (ad IP list blocker)
Greenify (memory optimization, performance, battery savings)
Nandroid backups
Custom ROMs
Custom kernels (allow you to over/under clock, etc according to your performance and battery preferences, network speed preferences, GPU preferences, etc. One of my favorite performance tweaks allows users to under-charge the battery slightly, thereby extending its lifetime).
OpenPDroid (privacy tweak)
Backup of SMS/MMS & apps
Xposed (unlocks a veritable smorgasbord of nifty interface enhancements, etc)
+ Xprivacy
+ PimpMyRom (many performance tuning enhancements)
+ Multiboot (ability to boot into distinctly different environments/roms - you could make your stock rom your main and install a custom rom, as well. Just read the about it 1st).
+ dSploit (pen testing)
+ WifiKill (look it up)
+ SecDroid (added security)
+ Ability to remove bloatware (Titanium Backup)
The most important one for me Running OTG cable
Isn't OTG supposed to be available to stock users?
Hit 'Thanx' if I've helped (just in case XDA goes rogue and starts offing the lowest common denominator).

Supposed to be or not, Google has it disabled in stock. Thus you need to root or use an app like Nexus Media Importer.
But I use media importer before and I'm not rooted.

That's exactly what he said
Good thread. I was wondering the same thing since I'm unlocked but not rooted.
Rick
I felt the same way. I went nearly a week without even unlocking my bootloader, which is unheard of for me. I am now running PA with franco kernel and I don't notice much difference from stock, though the minor enhancements are worth it. I'm excited to play with other kernels to see how much battery life I can squeeze out of this thing.

What's the most up to date rooting method that is compatible with KitKat? The anchored post for rooting seems to be outdated now.
I need root for Airplay compatibility.

Zedomax. It's an older hack, but if you go through the steps very carefully, one at a time, and be sure to follow the instructions on the video to a T then it's good. I just used it yesterday on a 2013 Nexus 7.
