Last time I checked I could not load any custom ROMS onto this phone as it has a locked bootloader. I did manage to get CWM onto it. I now see there is jellybean and would like to upgrade to this but it's not being offered by ATT yet if ever. Can I flash a LT28i jelly bean ROM over? Please go easy on me this is not my phone but my mothers and I am just trying to keep it up to date and working well for her.

looks difficult but just follow the steps
although i do believe that there may be a simpler way out there i just cant find the damn thread
Yes you can very easily flash the lt28h ftf JB version onto your lt28at to get JB. Look in the Dev section for info. Specifically the stock firmware downloads thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1752345
Or since you are rooted and have cwm installed you can follow this thread instead

Try searching a bit because this has been covered at length previously.

LT28h Firmware on LT28at device
Hi,
I downloaded Android 4.1.2 Firmware for LT28h and flashed on my Xperia Ion LT28at. It works like Champ .
Now I've rooted with DooMLoRD_Easy-Rooting-Toolkit_v17_perf-event-exploit.zip
Go ahead download Lt28h firmware and flash it. :good:

I rooted once before and then went back to OFW because the XPlay was fairly new and not a lot could be done. I've been looking through the CM7 thread and I like a lot of the functionality it brings to the phone so I was wondering how to go about popping that on my phone. I remember rooting with Gingerbread but then that became impossible once I upgraded firmware. Since the XPlay isn't going to support ICS it's basically dead to me so CM7 was my personal last chance before I consider getting a new phone so what's the easiest and noob friendly way to get CM7 on my phone.
Thanks in advance.
The boot.img within the CM7 zip is pre-rooted from what I remember. Just drag and drop the img out of the zip without unpacking it and your set to flash CM7.

You will need an unlocked bootloader and fastboot drivers. Fma965 made a nice tutorial. And if you have both, you can follow my tutorial

EDIT:
This is a step by step guide. What I was looking on this forum but found on other forums and hours of google searches...
downgraded the build/firmware from .285 -> .270
To do this I:
1) Downloaded and installed flashtools on my computer
2) Downloaded .270 build Xperia_Play_3.0.1.B.0.270_ATT.rar
3) Then I followed this YouTube Video.
4) Next I downloaded SuperOneClick [SuperOneClickv2.3.3-ShortFuse.zip]
5) Then I followed this YouTube Video.
I was done in under 30mins.
I now have a rooted r800AT on ver 2.3.3 with build/firmware .270.
----------------------------------------------
OP:
So as a good noob I have looked on the threads, I have searched google, youtube, and this website, I have studied the wiki, and I have even rooted other phones in the past.
I recently purchased an xperia play r800at.
I just want to root it. No custom roms necessary. I would prefer ICS but GB is fine.
I have not found a thread explaining how to root an xperia play v2.3.3 with build .285.
It seems ONLY build .270 and anything before Nov 2011 is able to be rooted [reference here].
The only solution I can think of at this point is to downgrade from .285 to .270 however there is nothing I can find on the internet to do this (or if that's even possible).
Please help. Thanks.
Once you root .270 you can update OTA to .285 and keep root.

Can't really do OTA, because I don't intend to use it as a phone and I also don't have ATT.
However, a new issue arose... I have lost access to the playstation pocket and can't play the crash bandicoot that was pre-installed.
I found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1036249
But they are all dead links now.
Man I was stupid not to make a copy of my SD card... ugh
If you flashed the stock ftf it should have put it back on there.

What does this(^) mean? The link which OP posted is for stock ftf only, right?
(At least it is so, according to this:xperiagamer.com/Stock-Roms/233-se-stock-firmware-for-flashtool.html)
What was the thing which OP did wrong? My phone is currently sim unlocked. Will I loose it if I flash the stock firmware?
As you can see from my questions, I am a total n00b.
Thanks
Figured it out!

Well u can still root your phone even it has a locked bootloader. u just cant have cwm recovery and cant use a custom kernel.
Thanks! Are there any other roms or tweaks that I can flash to my locked Xperia ion? It is an LT28at, but I flashed the LT28h onto it excluding the baseband so Im still getting my LTE from AT&T. Fairly new to all this and think its incredible!!! Thanks for all the support.

You can actually flash another version, like the lt28h, root it and install cwm. I have the lt28at flashed with lt28h jelly bean, rooted and have cwm, its totally possible. Just have to read the threads, then read it again and follow the instructions closely. Once you have cwm you can flash other roms even with a locked bootloader.

Unfortunately once we have JB, CWM doesn't stick, actually it doesn't work at all. So the best I have right now is a rooted flex with the official OTA update...but no CWM At this point I only know of one other rom that is available, Ice cream flex and that is with ICS of which CWM works with.
Was on 4.1 then updated via OTA kept root lost NFC can't find a fix other then to update again but that wasn't the plan unless I want to flash a prerooted 4.3 first I need CMW for the ZL not sure I have it for the Xperia T but I'm not sure if both are compatible ?

then just install CWM for ZL over here
but root it first before flashing CWM
lastly flash a pre-rooted 4.3 rom

Well then I need the corresponding Firmware of the 4.1 cause it seems I'm not fully rooted right now some apps have access and some don't
I'm trying to flash the 4.1 kernel so I can try rooting it again even though it says it's Rooted and to try and use that method of down grading the Kernel and running Doom lords Rooting kit but when flashing the old Kernel it may not be the right one I was getting a boot loop so I re-flashed the Canadian 10.3.A.0.423 and all was fine I swear I've searched all over these forums and I can't find what I need just the instructions on how to do it a lot of these links no longer work I'm using a C6506 ZL with the Bell firmware at least I have the FTF to go with it but I need the older one as well.
My S4A got stolen and, now I have a brand new Lt28i so, I decided to download the latest ftf from XDA in case I break anything however, the latest ftf in XDA for the Lt28i seems to be the ICS one; only the Lt28h has the JB ftf. I've already messed around with my phone, so, it's not really stock anymore.
Would it be worth it to restore my phone to factory settings using PC companion to create a ftf and upload it somewhere?
Remember, it'd be a ftf for the Lt28i ( the LTE one) with jellybean (6.2 b 0.211) in it.
NVM, I actually managed to mess something very badly and had to repair my phone :V
I'll post the ftf in the firmwares thread as soon as it's uploaded.
